View Full Version : NYCC NECA Boxed Set: Sell or Keep?

Hi Guys. I have a NYCC Exclusive NECA TMNT boxed set which a coworker is offering to buy off me for $175. My girlfriend gave me the NYCC NECA boxed set back in May for an early birthday present. My girlfriend doesn’t mind me selling it at all. In fact she encouraged me to saying she only paid $60 for it.
The NYCC boxed set was never opened and it comes with an autographed card by Peter Lair. The box itself is far from perfect, but it is not beat up and is in display condition. It has a crease on the plastic bubble between Raphael and Michelangelo’s head. The corners of the box have very minor dents. The wear on the box most likely occurred during the shipping/unloading process. My girlfriend recalls the attendants at the booth removing them from a box and stacking them as people lined up to purchase the boxed sets.
Do you guys think I should sell it to my coworker and make a quick profit or hold it for the long run? I also read online that there were only 500 NYCC boxed sets made. Is this true? Thanks for the advice in advance.

I believe thats true, tho Murphy was selling some extras I believe. I think they may be on the official TMNT website as well those could be regular NECA sets tho.
Hard to say its nice to have PL's autograph and an exclusive set is pretty cool. If you need money and already have the NECA figures sell it otherwise I'd probably keep it you might regret it sometime. Maybe in 10 years time the value will higher where you can make more profit. who knows.
Well, only you can be the judge of that. If you want to make a quick profit then go for it as that price seems to the range they've been going for on ebay. If you are wondering for its long term potential, thats hard to say but I would venture to say that it will probably hover around that same price range for a while.
You mentioned that it has a Peter auto card. Was the box set itself signed as well? I figured as much but just asking.
And on a completely unrelated note, I know your girlfriend is saying go for it, but I think generally speaking when your girl gives you a gift, she REALLY wants you to keep it. She may say otherwise, but I bet deep down she would want you to. Obviously, only you know the dynamics of your relationship, but I just wanted to throw that out there.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply guys.
Terminator. The box itself is signed as well as a 4" x 6" TMNT 2008 Comic Con card which according to my girlfriend, was pre-signed and tossed in the bag for those who purchased a boxed set. She waited in line to have Peter sign the box personally.
What do you guys think about the condition of the box? Its not perfect, but it's very much displayable. Will the crease in the bubble lower the value considerably in the future?

In this particular case, probably. The entire contents of the NYCC exclusive is available at retail, just not in 1 box. The only actual different between it and buying all 4 deluxe turtles is that theyre in the same box...so the box kinda makes the exclusive in this case.
Although, at the end of the day, your buyer may not care. SOme collectors just want something to have it, regardless of condition (my Target exclusive box set is in sad shape).
What you've heard is correct though. There are only 500 sets worldwide.

I was able to purchase mine from Murph for just $60, and so glad because I had to miss NYCC, and I'm only 6 hours away! He only had a few available and you had to enter a random drawing at his blog just for the chance to buy it. I'm positive there are no more for sale except on the secondary market for about $150-200
It got banged up just a little in shipping but I still wouldn't let it go for any amount, excepting maybe an offer so ridiculous than no one would make it. (Like $1000?) I'd just keep looking at the empty spot on my shelf where it used to be and wouldn't be happy until I got another one.
Ask yourself, what are you gonna spend that $175 on? Is it better than being one of the 500 people who've got one?

Well, I think everyone is going to tell you basically the same thing. $175 is more than what it is going for right now and you would be making a nice profit. But this a TMNT forum, so most of us that do have one, can never imagine selling it. Also, who knows for sure, but 10-15 years from now, I think these will be worth a lot more than $175.
Also, as far as your girlfriend goes, and I don't what your collecting habits are like, but I'm sure the less toys you have in the house, the happier she will be. But maybe I'm just speaking from personal experience. ;)

 Yeah... I sure misled my girlfriend. She thought I was just a little tiny bit geeky when we got together all I had was a few boxes of comics, zines and sci-fi pulps, and a handful of Star Wars & Toybiz X-Men figs. Then it all started with wanting to get the 4 original turtles MOC. I said I would stop there... but now I've got a whole closet full of TMNT, MOTU, Ghostbusters, Star Wars, Street Sharks, and every other toy I wanted to get back from my childhood. Not too mention the fact that my comic and pulp collection now fills another closet. And then there are cards, posters, prints, artwork. In 4 years I have amassed the collection I always wanted, and still there is no end in sight.
Because she wanted me to, I started an Ebay store which was supposed to cut down on some of it, and sure, I sold a bunch. What I forgot to tell her was that all the money I made selling doubles and undesirable stuff, I spent on stuff I wanted even more. Yay Paypal!

I have the same problem with my girlfriend: she doesn't mind that I collect TMNT comics but she is really disliking my TMNT figure collection.
When we move to our new house, I'll have to sell some figures I'm afraid: I don't think I'll have room to take them all with.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've decided to keep them.
CrazyCowboy. You make an excellent point and your point plays a big part in my decision. I was going to use the money for Dodger tickets this weekend and whatever change is left for some beer and hot dogs at the game. But I thought about it, and looking at these 4 bad ass reptiles sitting on my shelf will provide more happiness in the long run than a night at the ball park. Also, as some of you have said....I might come up a good amount of change in the future.
In addition, I was also thinking about using this as an excuse to start collecting more figures. If my girlfriend complains, I'll just tell her she's the one who fueled my passion by bringing these bad boyz home.
On that note, anyone a looking to sell their spare MOC 88' vintage rubber heads?

I'm glad I could help you decide, man. You and I are in a very special club of 500 lucky turtle fans. There will always be other Dodgers games, set aside $5 here, $10 there and in no time you'll find you've saved up money for another pair of tickets.
But sell my soft heads? Now you've gone soft in the head!
Oh yeah, and a little belated, but WELCOME TO THE TECHNODROME!

If she starts to complain, you say "You could never understand my passion, and in turn, never understand me...", then look sad the rest of the day...That always works for me.

HAHAHAHA.... OOOOOOOOOHHH MAN, YES! I've tried every angle to defend my insatiable collecting: It'll be worth a fortune when I'm ready to retire, It helps to keep me sane and happy, but THAT is the next one I'm gonna try when I get a dirty look for yet another box arriving with the mail.

Me personally I don't "have" to have an exclusive set especially if they are already released in single packs, but for the completist it is a definite must. I would have sold it and bought something else. :D

I know this is an old post and you might have sold the set.
But I would never sell my box set.
I bought the single packs with bases to display and kept my NYCC box set closed.:trazz:
It's really up to you if you want to flip it!

Keep it and wait until it is valuable enough to sell for over 800 bucks.
