Take a look at what's going down over at The 5th Turtle! Apparently, the director of the first TMNT movie is interested in doing a director's cut with special features and using lost footage that he has personal copies of for the DVD!
Of course, this isn't set-in-stone just yet. Somehow, this feels kind of like a "test the waters" sort of deal. So, if you're interested in seeing this, you should definitely head over there and voice your opinion on a Special Edition of the first TMNT movie. Mayhaps a large enough response will get word to WB about getting this out on the shelves for us!

Hey... they missed the boat the first time by not releasing it to hype up the TMNT film, I really hope this time we see something. Please Warners... you owe this to us. Director's cut special editions of movies that deserve it Not Big Mama's House 4 or something to promote a terrible sequal to a movie that shouldn't have been made in the first place.

Yes. Its about time. Love it. And the suction cup alternate ending is probably the one they're talking about.
Tons of people my age really enjoy the live action movies, its not just a fandom thing. I was indeed surprised that the movies were not released last year with the movie..
Besides doesn't the first movie have a glitch? There is one part in the movie where it seems like it stopped, at first I thought it was the dvd but I exchanged it and it had the same problem so it appears to be a problem in the disc. Would like to see special editions of the other two as well.

I was waiting to see if they'd release special editions around the time the newer movie was coming out, but they never did. We need SE of the whole trilogy, but this is a great first step!

The first live action movie still stands as one of my favourite movies ever, and easily one of the best comic book movies of all time. I think with the 25th Anniversary happening next year, WB would be stupid to ignore something like this! This HAS to happen! It'd be really cool to see some extras talking about the comic books as well as the films. Kind of a comparative retrospective, with interviews with everyone over at Mirage! That would be cool!

Yeah, this is an opportunity that need not be passed up. Too bad that the ball was dropped on the Star Wars 30th Anniversary. It was so underwhelming. We might have this TMNT Special Edition (and I hope LOADS of features) to make up for that.

I don't see it happening...25th anniversary or not, I'm 100% certain this'll never happen cause the higher ups at that studio just...don't...care.
If I sound negative, I'm sorry...you can just call me the name that rhymes with lasso. But I've been wanting this for so long, and burned too many times, that I'm pretty much set in it never coming to be.
I know this is about 'first steps' and what have ya...but again I've just been burned too many times and now I'm completely cynical on this whole subject. If I gotta be, so be it.
And online petitions never work, blogging never works...nothing of that kind has ever worked. The studio probably doesn't even remember the first film, and for it being a $135 million blockbuster (in 1990 dollars at that) it would be a shoo-in in sales. Lion's Gate did a 2 disc for Monster Squad (a flick that wasn't even a hit back in the day, but it's still a good flick) and did that one justice, yet the studios can't think through their pea-brains that a movie that was A). A blockbuster success and the most successful independent film at the tiem and B.) A cultural film (aka the general audience still remembers it) would make the moo-lah for them on DVD.

I'll be posting more info on my blog over the coming weeks and months, but for starters you can read this (http://ninja-pizza.blogspot.com/2008/08/its-time-for-tmnt-1-special-edition.html).
I've also started a MySpace account (http://www.myspace.com/tmnt_dvd) that I'll be cross-posting to over time.
I agree that this is a long shot, but I think now's the time to get loud and vocal about it if we ever want a chance of this happening. It can't happen with just the group of us here; it has to go more mainstream. So put the word out as much as you can, especially to any non-TMNT forums where there might be crossover interest.

Like I posted on Murphs blog, when me and my friends were at Walmart last night there were a tone of copies of the first 3 turtle movies. They are still selling them and still making money off those movies. Why not make a special edition they could discontinue the other ones and or more people who have the original may buy them. I know I would buy them no question, Im sure others who dont have the origingal or only have the VHS tapes would probably pick up the special edition over the old dvd. Plus they could charge more and hence make more money then they do for the standard dvds.

Just because one studio won't release it doesn't mean another won't. I see this working solely because the push to re-release everything Bluray is happening. Now is the time if there ever was one.

I'm really hoping that they release it on Blu, just so they can make a special edition regular DVD. I mean, if the director has a collection of stuff behind the scenes, and bloopers, and stuff like that, it's possible.
Even Beetlejuice (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Beetlejuice-20th-Anniversary/9743) is getting a special edition, with bonus cartoon episodes.

I don't know much about blue-ray, someone educate me. Can they format old movies to it? I thought newer movies shot with digital or a really high resolution film could be Bluray?
Spitfire
08-06-2008, 09:58 AM
Well your right newer movies are in some cases shot with higher resolution but most are still shot the old fashion way and transfered to a computer to be edited.
HD is a process of uping the quality on a movie. It's not as hard to do as one would imagine. Remember back when Lucas remastered Star Wars? He up'd the quality on it by a lot and that was before HD was even thought of. That's what they did to movies when they were put onto DVD I believe. How they do HD I'm not completely sure but it's an up convert process. It has something to do with turning the movie into a digital format and using a converter or compressor to up the quality.
Speaking of Bluray players still play DVDs so rebuying your collection wouldn't really be needed. Also if this turtles movie does come out it'll be in upconvert format for the DVD so you can play it on an HDTV in HD still. It won't technically be as good looking but in all honesty I've seen both and I hardly see the littlest difference. But I don't have a huge HDTV mines a 32 inch.

A "drector's cut" aka Special Edition is a loaded DVD with cut scenes, behind the scenes, added scenes into the movie, and any other related material to the movie.
Spitfire

Technically speaking it's the cut of a movie the director himself intended people to see. It may contain scenes that weren't in the first release and sometimes shorter scenes. Directors cut can be totally different from the original.
What Buslady described is an Unrated or Extended Cut which is where they toss in everything that wasn't used. Most of the time their pointless scenes that make the movie drag on or their just extra fighting or gore that wasn't in the normal release. Their almost never better. Some directors get mad like Ridely Scott did when they re-released "Alien" with footage he didn't think needed to be in the film.

That's why I'd like to see a "Director's Cut" and not just an "Extended Version."
For years, we've heard and seeen numerous things that would make us believe there is an alternate version of this film out there. But to finally hear the director openly state it (I'm not sure if he has before), it'd be a real shame if Warner Bros. didn't act on it now.
I know it's too early but besides a rough cut and some extra scenes, I'd love a commentary track by the director (he seems eager to bring it back so it'd be fitting) and perhaps a reunion track from Judith and Elias. Perhaps even the voice actors could do a track. This DVD would be worth every penny if done right. Let's just hope it all works out.
And since it's been brought up, do you think they'd release Special Editions of the two sequels. Granted, their directors haven't put any word out, but I'm sure if WB goes ahead with one, they may release the others. In the end, it's about money and I'm sure they'll sell well.

So, we could just wind up with the movie with extra scenes either added to the film itself otr as "deleted/alternate" sequences?
It would be great to have some of the British sequences that weren't in the movie as bonus features. I know there had to have been some alternate takes.
And BTW, I just signed up for the Turtles Special Edition site myself. We need as many people as possible, right?

Yeah unless he plans to re-edit and really doctor it up the point where it's noticeable I'd say it's better to leave all that crap as a bonus feature. That or put both versions of the film on the disk. I also think they should include the script that has the scenes that weren't filmed in it as a bonus.

Well, no, I won't be putting the script on any DVD (I really don't think a DVD is a good place for a large chunk of text like that anyways). But I will be posting the full text of the script for the deleted scenes to the Interwebs in the near future.
If all goes well, I'll have the first one up this weekend. :)

All of the deleted scenes are pretty well documented in all of the movie materials - comics and books and everything. I believe tmntmoviesite.com (http://www.tmntmoviesite.com) has a good summary of all of them, but if I spent time writing that up it'd take away from time I could be spending typing the actual script (and scanning pictures). :)

Well, didn't feel right using the form letter, sent this out instead:
To Warner Brothers Home Video:
In 2009 the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise will celebrate it's 25th anniversary. During the that time, one of the franchise high points in both commercial and critical success was teh first live action film, which was produced by New Line Cinema. It is the hope of die-hard TMNT fans of all ages, to say nothing of film buffs and the public in general that Warner Brothers/New Line Cinema uses this celebration as an opportunity to release the strangely absent "Special Edition" of that film on DVD.
Steve Barron, director of the film, has made clear both his interest in being personally involved in such a DVD project and has stated he is willing to provide supplemental material for such a release, including deleted scenes and original artwork. in addition, many other frequent requests and suggestions such as remastered video and sound, commentary tracks, theatrical trailers, and making of documentaries, are standard releases on most films that were even a fraction the commercial success of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
When it was released, the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film achieved the highest independent film gross in history, a record it would hold for over nine years, and both it's special effects and cinematic construction received rave reviews. Indeed, at $135 million dollars domestically (over $201 worldwide), the first film was a blockbuster for it's time. This film led to both New line being taken seriously and two sequels, both of which made further money and pushed special effects even more to the limit.
This film warrants a Special edition release both for it's commercial appeal as well as for the creative merit of the film.
Sincerely,
Joshua
One of The Turtle Faithful

That's a very professional and convincing letter, turkishproverb. It's short, to the point, and didn't go overboard with any criticism to WB that might piss them off. "Strangely absent" was a good euphemism for "WB, You've been stupid for not proceeding with the Special Edition Release of my favorite film. DO IT, DAMMIT!"
The letter does need some grammatical revisions, however. I hope you realize that.

Hehe, this is uncanny...
I hadn't been on this board for quite some time so I hadn't read this topic...
Last week though, I thought to myself that a special edition of the 1990 Ninja Turtles film on DVD would really be great so I decided to write a mail to New Line and ask if they had plans for it.
Sadly, they haven't replied yet.
Now I know why though... I probably wasn't the only one that wrote them asking for a new Ninja Turtles DVD release.;)
They probably read my mail and thought "Dangnammit, here's another one..."

This effort is going to fail unless everyone is willing to get the word out, so I think it's a good idea for as many people as possible to have banners in their sigs not just here, but on any other forums you might visit. Especially on any non-TMNT forums you visit.

By the way, I wonder if they ever kept a blooper reel of the movie. I don't think I've ever seen animatonic movie bloopers before...
I wonder if, when something went wrong and the director yelled "cut", the actors and muppeteers stayed in character or the face just froze up...

I hope the "rough cut" Steve Baron has on tape isn't totally ruined by age. I also hope that there is more then just a few extra scenes. I was under the impression that there was about 20 minutes or so cut from the film.
Also, I read somewhere that the version shown in theaters was different from what's been released on vhs/dvd. More violent content or what not.
My hope is that this will be a director's cut with all the scenes restored as best they can.
As for the alternitive ending, the only way that this could fit into the film nicely would be to fit it after the credits as a nice little bonus.

Being that I was like 5 when the movie was in theaters and I only saw it once before it came to video, I don't recall the theater version being different from the VHS/DVD/TV version at all. I keep asking about what was so different but nobody who seems to remember seems to be responding. Some people just direct me to stuff that never made it into the movie in the first place. Can someone help me out here?

Awesome. Here's what Murph said on his blog in a comment about that whole thing:
"There's been no real forward movement outside of an email from Steve Barron wanting the URLs of related sites that he could forward to WB as "evidence" of a demand. On those grounds, we have to thank a whole lot of you."

I wonder if they can make this a DVD with the true original widescreen format. I was comparing some of the scenes from the widescreen against the fullscreen version of my DVD and it's really sporadic. Some shots are truly wider, but others are just cropped versions of the fullscreen.
I'd absolutely love to see a remixed/extended cut of this movie. I sure hope it works out that way.

1) Record a persuasive video of yourself asking Warner Brothers to release a TMNT Special Edition DVD.

3) Upload video to YouTube. (Even better, upload it as a reponse to the TMNT Movie Mistakes video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFLK0uXzerY)).
4) Send me the link to the video.

I just watched through the movie today and tried to pay close attention to clues of cut scenes. The one that stands out the most is the shredder fighting his foot. I never really took into account how they roll out a fighting mat and when the shredder puts the Dragon Doji (sp?) on the guy and says "Money cannot buy what you have earned tonight".
I'm surprised I never picked up on this stuff and how obvious something was cut.

Wait, Shredder enters, they roll out the mats, there's a fight (which was cut), and then the presentation of the dragon doji?

THAT is the deleted scene I am most interested in seeing. Maybe than can even go ahead and insert it in the movie itself, and not just as a special feature. Think about how ominous that would look, and it'd be a great foreshadowing of how the Turtles are going to get their asses handed to them later on.

If someone wants to email Dan and ask him to do that, that'd be fine.
However, their boss, the guy most likely to actually profit from all of this effort 1) Stalks me around the Technodrome and apparently keeps a file of everything I say, ever (not that I regret anything, but come on Peter, get a life) 2) Hates me vehemently because I have the gall to tell him the blunt truth instead of kiss his ass (this from the same guy who ranted about how horrible the Star Wars prequels were and said that the guys around Lucas should have told him how horrible everything was instead of stand around and kiss his ass) 3) Can't stand the fact that Kevin Eastman has never been an ass to me, so I tend to speak positively of him.
To say my enthusiasm for this project has dropped would be an understatement. I'm sticking with it, but really only because it's for the greater good.

Peter being Peter aside, why would ANY of the parties involved NOT want to clean up the footage, get some lost material, and prep it for the eventual (As Spitfire once said) Blu Ray release? It's only money for royalties and stuff like that that have to go in. It's almost as if the other parties think they gotta reshoot the whole movie.
If there's any resistance on any part, I'd figure it would be on Warner Bros... because, well... they're WB and they don't know what they're doing lately.

I've been eagerly waiting for a Director's cut, like all of you, for a very long time. I've read about all the original/cut footage, and it would be great to see what was filmed with this movie. Even small parts, I would love to see the turtle shells popping up out of the water like in the trailer, etc. I wonder though how much voicework was done with everything in post production.
Why this wasnt released with TMNT '07 I have no clue. Dammit WB!

This angry driven drivel coming for a girl sitting at her computer, who I must assume, has all the free time in the world, but chooses to spend it bashing a guy who makes comic books. The same angry girl who buys things Turtles related and is a fan of a franchise that said man created....
Honestly, could we find a little bit of a optimistic attitude around here? All I hear is complaining. I agree, we as fans and as people, have a right to say what we like and don't like, but this has gotten to be every single post about how much we hate something or someone.
Insulting people never helps. Besides, those comments were made over a month ago.
