View Full Version : Would You Like to See a CaW TPB?

Kendamu

Mirage's official stance on a "City at War" TPB is that it'll become a possiblity depending on how well their other TPBs do next year. This includes the "Forever War" TPB, the "Collected Book I" reprint, and one other project that they haven't announced yet.

I would really like to see one because with Collected Books I and IV I can get a lot of the "main story" (i.e. 1-11 and "Return to New York") and read them anytime I want without risking damage to the original issues I have containing those storylines. However, I have to pull my "City at War" issues out everytime I want to read that story. I'd like to be able to read the "complete saga" of what Kevin and Peter wrote together in TPB form in order to keep my individual issues safely stored away. Its disappointing that such didn't happen a long time ago.

Who else here would like to see a "City at War" TPB?

I would. It would be a blessing if my local library got a copy. After all, no one else would have it, not my local comic shop at least.

With all the random manga and indie comics they have, my library would be very likely to get that TPB and I could finally read it.

Yeah I was in a hurry when you postes this earlier.
Anyway, Yeah I'd get it for sure if it wasn't redone at all and A.C. Farley did the the cover or some one who is still as talented at drawing as they once where like Dooney.

Kind of a "D'oh!" moment for me.

This book is long overdue and should be a no-brainer.

Does that mean we'll ever actually see it? I wish it were so simple...

Absolutey. If there were a run of comics that deserved TPB treatment, it would have to be CAW.
I think we'll get it...at some point...way down the road...

Yeah I think it would be a great idea to have a TPB for city at war. I would defenitely buy it. and maybe some Volume one reprints of the older TPBs.

Ditto! CAW deserves one.

I have been wondering why they don't release one of those best stories compilation books in hardcover. The top 25 stories in one book would be a great idea for the upcoming anniversary.

I wouldnt buy it, at least not when it came out unless it had a good bonus story or something. It would have been nice if they had reprinted all those books earlier, vol 2 as well would be nice. Now I have almost completed my TMNT back issue collection with exception of a small handful from vol 1,2 and more from 3 that have been harder to get... It would make it easier to read like Goongasnootch mentioned, I think I have only read that arc twice although thats over 4 years since I only started tracking down books shortrly after the new toon started.

Yes, I would love A City at War Tpb. I was more of a comic collector when I was younger, but these days I only pick up trade paper backs. I can't stand reading thirty pages and being cut off . So excited for TMNT tpb's to finally start coming out.

I never said, "Don't get the new one." What I said was somethnig along the lines of, "Find the old one because it has more in it." I didn't say anything like, "Don't get the new one because its stupid and Peter Laird is a tool. You're no better than poop if you get it."

But, as for finding an old one, you can't just do one search and be like, "Well, now we know that finding it is impossible." Sometimes you have to do multiple searches to find it. Sometimes it hsows up in lots. Sometimes you'll find it but it'll be way too expensive. That's the nature of finding hard-to-find comics... such as the Future Shark trilogy... grr...

There isn't even any guarantee that the reprint TPB will actually come out next year. In order for that to happen Peter Laird will have to give up motorcycles for a few months or he'll have to concede and reprint the books in their original form. I wouldn't bet any amount of money on either of those happening.

Be persistent and find the original. Or buy all of the books separately. If you're not concerned about first prints, all of them are fairly easy and cheap to round up.

Peter laird commits fraud every time he claims he can't reprint issue 8 for legal reasons.

Back in the day didn't Sim inform Mirage that he felt the issue had been reprinted too many times and told the to stop. (Even though Laird did pay him for his work on the book).

Sure Sim may currently say he's okay with it being reprinted now or being in a trade but I can understand Laird having a bad feelings about using it as well as the worry that Sim may well have another change of heart.

Say what you will about about the redoing lettering and toning of the early issues and I'd probably agree but I can't blame anyone at Mirage for having mixed feelings about Cerebus's inclusion.

turkishproverb
08-10-2008, 11:15 PM
1: According to Sim, Laird suggested they end the print of the single issue, and he agreed to.

2: Sim's word in print giving up any ownership of the issue and any claim to it is another issue, and legally is the equivilant of a signed contract.

The closest Sim has ever come to contradicting on this was saying that laird would never have let him print the issue in "the Cerebus Misscelany" (he also complained that Todd Macfarlane woudln't let him put Spawn 10 in there) and this was AFTER giving up ownership, and it would therefore give him no legal ground. Especially since he admitted to giving up ownership in the comment.

I've only read of Sim saying that once and if we're thinking of the same comment then Sim was questioning whether Laird and McFarlane would allow him. The tone suggested to me that he felt they wouldn't but didn't state that that they wouldn't allow him...

"I wouldn't be looking for the CEREBUS MISCELLANY anytime soon. There are too many loose ends. Should it include the complete Turtles/Cerebus crossover? Should it include the Spawn/Cerebus crossover? Would Pete Laird and Todd McFarlane be willing to give permission for that? Or Mark Bode with MIAMI MICE? Do I reprint the entire story for the sake of the one or two Cerebus panels?"

turkishproverb
08-11-2008, 01:10 AM
Since then, he's gone on to specify that He is fairly confident both would refuse permission, and that fighting them legally would be futile because both have alot of money, and that laird has Sim giving up ownership on record.. I'll try to find the source, but I don't make a point of cataloguing these things URL's and such.

Furthermore, Laird has been made aware of Sim giving up ownership, so he can't even pleade ignorance.

found this quote by Sim:

No, as far as I know Pete just doesn't want Cerebus in there and since he has absolute control over the Turtles, it's his call to make. I don't think it's a huge deal. As Kevin pointed out between the original comic book and the First Comics reprint there's probably over 100,000 copies in circulation. I've always held that any artist or writer can reprint anything that they worked on so obviously I'd like to have the original duo-shaded Kevin Eastman story with my Cerebus pictures in the CEREBUS MISCELLANY b&w collection, but I also know better than to go head to head with Pete's a) millions and cool.gif lawyers. Same as with SPAWN 10. I'd like to reprint it in black and white in CEREBUS MISCELLANY and (possibly) redraw the Cerebuses. But unless Todd wants that happen that isn't going to happen no matter what foundatons I choose to conduct my own business on.

Are you talking about the single issues? There are a few that seem to be a lot harder to find than others. Issue 4 is one that I can't seem to find.

If Laird can't get around to working on the issues, then he should just reprint them as is. Is messing around with the original issues really more important than capitalizing on the 25th anniversary?

Probably. Because if it wasn't, he would have been smart and capitalized on the release of the movie last year.

There's trades already out of everything. Almost all of them but 1 and 7 is on the official site I just bought them for super cheap. Also all the first issues are out in color as well and much easier to find then the big trade that collects the first 15 issues of the series.

I also meant to comment on this before but I would definitely get a CaW TPB simply because I love that story arch and yes they are hard to find so I would like to retire all my singles from being read. I had them all except for #50 (aka city at war part 1) for about years, I happened to find #50 at a random and very small comic convention in Cherry Hill NJ. I was thrilled I seriously almost hugged the guy selling it.

Not much of an update:

I've said this a number of times in the letters pages of the Vol. 4 comics, but it doesn't hurt to say it again -- yes, there will be more trade paperback reprints of the old TMNT comics released at some point in the future (possibly in unaltered AND "remastered" versions). I can't say when that will happen, partly because -- to be COMPLETELY honest -- doing these reprints doesn't pique my interest very much, and thus I have been dragging my feet on putting them together. But who knows -- that could change. And at some point -- maybe when I am finished with it-- I'd like to do a big Vol. 4 collection.

I guess it's a little understandable if the creator of a popular series has to listen to fanboys who think they know best all the time.

At the same time though...why not re-release the old comics? I think comic fans everywhere deserve it.:D

It just doesn't make sense in today's market to not do trades, if nothing else, it would help vol. 4, since it would let interested people catch up without having to resort to the comic stores.

Most of the new comic readers in recent years (especially the ones coming in from Manga) only know the book store market and only know trades. Why not introduce the franchise to a whole new market?

I would LOVE to buy more turtle comics, and I'd happily buy the whole series, but I just plain don't do 'comics' anymore.

How come? You can't have trades without the comics there in the first place, and if the comics aren't selling, where's the incentive to collect them? ESPECIALLY with Turtles, where it's doing it all on its own. Why say you'd love to do it and that you'd happily buy the whole series and then say you don't do comics anymore? It's like saying "I'd be happy to support you, but I won't".

I don't think this argument applies to tablesalt's point. The books he, and everyone else, wants collected are long out of print and buying them on the secondary market does nothing to help Mirage. And individual comic books take up a hell of a lot more space than a few trades. On this alone I can completely understand the people who "don't do comics."

Sure, you could have the trades alone, it's a choice. But that's neither here nor there. I don't want comics, and I don't care if they are there or not. I only want to buy what I want to buy, I don't care how it gets there. And it's not my fault that Mirage insists on running its business like it's 1988. There are far less known brands and far smaller companies that sell me the trades I want through amazon, or other bookstores. Why should I settle for less?

Why say you'd love to do it and that you'd happily buy the whole series and then say you don't do comics anymore? It's like saying "I'd be happy to support you, but I won't".

I never said 'I support you,' and I don't. I don't 'support' any company. In the consumer/producer relationship, the burden is on the producer to convince the consumer to buy, and to produce a product that accomplishes that. Mirage isn't doing that for me; therefore, I don't buy.
By 'I don't do comics' I mean monthlies, I'm done with them, and I'll probably never set foot in a comic store again.

If they provide the product I want tomorrow, then I will buy tomorrow.

If they go out of business because they refuse to recognize that the market has changed, well, that's their problem. This isn't ill will (or bashing, as some would call it). I'm just treating them the way I do any other company.

TristanHuwJones
08-21-2008, 10:33 PM
I know, I never took it as ill will, it just read rather strangely. If you go back and look at what you wrote (and this is how I read it), it looks like you've written that you would love to buy more turtle comics (as in monthlies), and would happily buy the whole set (of monthlies) but you just don't do comics (monthlies). I also didn't say that you did or didn't say anything, I said it was LIKE saying... But ultimately it doesn't really matter, it's me misinterpreting what you said, and I apologise. :)

I totally understand the space issue, and that these books are long overdue, and completely agree with these points. I think it makes perfect sense to bring them out, especially with the 25th ann. coming up. It was just me misinterpreting that last point that threw me out. Ignore me, it's been a long and infuriating week for me so far...
