View Full Version : Favorite Turtles Universe

Now, I know I'm not alone when I say I enjoy all versions of TMNT. That said, which is your favorite? How to they stack up in your personal opinion? Here's my list, bearing in mind that each spot was incredibly close:

1. Mirage (Volume 4 Continuation) - This is the big one. It's had its ups and downs, but it always pulls out winners. I like that the characters aren't written one-note. I like the surrealism created by the varying art styles, and stories ranging from ninja battles to alien encounters. Mostly, I like the depth it sometimes displays.

2. Mirage (Image Continuation) - I really do like Volume 3, from what I've read. I think there's a place for its balls-to-the-wall action, and I'm a sucker for high contrast art. In the end, I just prefer the calmer, yet more bitterly realistic take on the Turtles' future that we see in Mirage proper.

3. Archie - Mutants galore. I am a major supporter of other mutants in the Turtles' world (probably from my collecting the toys as a kid). The stories were great too, for what it was. Per issue, it's probably more entertaining than Mirage, but again, it never tackles anything of great depth.

4. 1987 Toon - Sure, lots of the episodes were duds, but it still holds up once you notice the self-aware camp. It's nostalgic, it has mutants, it's just damn fun.

5. 2003 Toon - I have to place it slightly below the old toon, because I'm not feeling the replay value as much. And the most I can say for it is, "That was really good for a kids' cartoon." It has some original elements that worked out well, but the problem is its so easily outclassed by the comics it takes from, and were a more faithful adaptation to come along, I'm not sure I would come back to this cartoon very often.

6. Movies - What can I say? They're very entertaining, but seem so loosely related that it'd be hard to call it a favorite universe.

7. The Next Mutation - Sweet Jesus. A live action show could have been so cool, too... I'd still buy it on DVD and watch it in my most masochistic moments, though.

Like you said Cipher, I love all of the turtles universes ( well, maybe not Next Mutation), Mirage made them hardcore and more realistic, The 87 toon was what got me into the turtles in the first place, and the 2003 toon brought back Turtle Power, but Archie found a way to tell good stories and introduce so many different characters into the turtle's mythos. Plus, they were able to stick with a complete story-line, unlike Mirage, who after Return to New York and Before City at War, were just mostly uneven one shot stories. Image did okay with trying to keep the turtle pulse beating, but mainstream super-heros have no place in the turtle's universe.

The 2k3 cartoon wins. Archie would be second.

I liked the 1987 cartoon, especially in the first seaons before the plot seemed to repeat when Krang, Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady had to break into a power station and get energy for the Technodrome. They could have used more new stories instead of just letting the TMNT kick the butt of Krang, Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady in almost every episode ("Enter the Rat King" is one of the best episodes). The Archie comics were also very good until they became too weird in the end, with Adolf Hitler's brain and that stuff. The 2003 cartoon is good, but I would like to see an ordinary human Shredder. The movies are fun but could have been better, The Next Mutation could have been much better.

I had to choose the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 movie (the other three excluded), since thats what made me a fan and the first thing I saw ever of turtles. Second would definitely be the Mirage b&w comics. They go hand in hand very well together for me.

Oh, that's totally fair. I'm not particularly disappointed, just surprised. Especially since so many people dislike the CGI flick.

As I've stated before, my favorite Turtleverse is the CGI movie's universe.

Guitar Raph, consider you TMNT fandom revoked!

EDIT: TMNT (IV) is loosly based on the other 3, primarily because Shredder is gone and they have items from the other movies in the trophy room....however...it also has ties to the 2k3 series, though it's really only through a kids book (which show's Raph'e shell-cycle and Silver Sentry), and the inclusion of the mouser and Triceraton mask in the a fore mentioned trophy room.

relax Guitar_Raph, he was only joking with you.

I'm torn between the orginal toon and the 2k3 toon. I love them all equally for diffrent reasons, the new show revived my crazy turtle obsession after a long nine or eight year dormacy, and I've become quite attached to this version. And unlike alot of people have stated I think many of the new toon episode do have rewatchablety. So for me it's a tye between the old toon and new toon universes. 8)

Well, Mirage volume 1 isn't included.

So aside from that, it's between the 1987 cartoon and the Archie comics.

I'm going with the Archie comics. With the 1987 cartoon it reaches a point where the later episodes don't really interest me too much anymore. As a kid I remember thinking the Archie comics were really cool because the Turtles' adventures in them had some more variety than the cartoon. I'm not really much of a Ninjara fan, though.

Well, Mirage volume 1 isn't included.Sorry for the confusion, but Mirage Volume 1 would be included under the "Mirage - Volume 4" option and the "Mirage - Image" option. I should've been more clear, but I meant for those options to represent the different continuations, both of which branch off of Volume 1.

Yeah I remember wondering that too. I also remember reading this volume one comic( the one where Renet gives them a cube and they travel through time with it, they become pirates, then baby turtles and fight themselves from twenty minutes past) when I was like twelve and thinking this is awesome. I tried looking for more volume one comics but I never did until this years' Wizrd Wolrd...sorry about the tangent there. I really like the mirage series as well as the old toon. I never read any Archie but I would love to. My favorite would probably be the 2K3 toon because of the simple fact that it got me really interested in the turtles again after the next mutation went off air. Even though the next mutation was crap I still liked it for some odd reason, even if it felt more like power rangers at times.

I always took it for a mistake until I learned about the Mirage comics in 2003/2004. Back then I just knew about the 1987 cartoon, the Archie comics, the UK "Hero Turtles" comics, the movies (always wandered why Bebop and Rocksteady weren't in the movies, and I was sure Krang didn't appear because it would't work for a live action film), the video games and the action figures. I dind't know who Karai was when the "Tournament Fighters" video game.

I love the orginal series, and unlike some I enjoy it for more than just nostalgia. The orginal toon still freaks my freak baby!

But I voted for the the 2k3 toon. this toon has balls and dared to cut away from the the known mold of humour and zaniness that was/is the orginal toon, and try to redefine the turtles in it's more serious and closer roots go all balls out. This show doesn't get the credit it deserves and how much people want to make it like the old toon, it is it's own version of the turtles. 8)

1. TMNT 2K3 New Toon: I voted for the new toon Turtles its got alot of what I liked about the Mirage mixed in with its own stuff. For me it just did for the most part everything right. Back when I was a kid when I saw the movie and the two comic series all I wished for was that the cartoon would be somewhat like those more instead of being so goofy. I feel like this series did my childhood fantasy justice.

2. Archie: This was a hard choice for me because its also my favorite universe. I loved how the series had such a rich supporting cast and rogues gallery. Some I must say mirage doesn't do to well with at least in my opiniion. The only thing that kept me from voting for it was that sometimes the stories got a bit confusing but when you introduce time travel that happens. That and some of the elements from the Mirage series weren't there

3. 1987 Old Toon: Its what got me into the fandom its fun to watch but I cant take it very seriously so that why I didn't vote for it.

4. Mirage: Its the original its what gave them life a couple of years ago it might have been my number one or two fav but its kinda gone downhill over the years. It felt like City at War was the last big story that was told in it and the rest was just filler oneshots and some ideas that were either good or crappy. The ideas that were good just never seemed to make tha tmuch of an impact.

5. Movies: I love the first movie one of my favorite versions of the Turtles. I loved the more gritty and realistc world of the turtles you knew it wasn't going to lay the scifi and fantasy stuff thick like the rest fo the versions. Then the second movie came out and while I enjoy it and love that movie it kinda ruined what the first movie was trying to do IMO. Then the third and fourth and those felt more like the cartoon version. Then it became like any other version of the turtles.

6. Image or Teenage Mutilation Ninja Turtles: This is where the list goes to stuff I like to stuff I hate. I wasn't a fan of putting the Turtles in the imag euniverse at times it felt like thaey were a savage Dragon spinoff book then they were there own title. That and the ripping the Turtles apart crap. I was fine with Raph losing an eye even Cyborg Don didn't bother me to much but then Leo losing a hand and manbat Splinter and I was starting to see a pattern. I wonder how many more body parts they would have lost if it continued.

7. Next Mutation: Worst version ever thats why its ranked dead last on my list.

This is a rediculously hard choice for me, but I went with Archie because of it's great characterization and supporting cast.

Honorable Mentions
Mirage - Such a unique comic, nothing quite like it. I don't have to embelish, ya'll know what up.

OT - Wen't down as one of the greatest cartoons of its time, really let your imagination run wild as a kid.

Movies - Great mix of Mirage and OT, wish they could have made a TV Series in the vain of the first flick.

NT - An excellent modernization of the TMNT, long-running continuity is this shows strong point. Plus is had action/fight scenes that rivaled the likes of Samurai Jack and Justice League Unlimted.

Other - The NES/SNES games (partiularly III and IV), such a ****ing blast, even to this day.

But is it your favorite?

That's a tough one. I think as far as quantity goes Archie might have more "must read" issues, but that first arc from issues 1-11 of Mirage is classic. I think Archie April was more interesting than Mirage April. I've never really liked Ninjara all that much.

I'll say Mirage barely gets the win.

ninjara is the single reason I don't like the Archie version of the turtles. I was really lovin and enjoying the series until she came into the picture, and after she just spoiled it for me and could keep reading the series. I felt like she screwed up the turtles dynamic a bit and I just coudn't accept her. I know that there are alot of fans of her out there but frankly I found her annoying.

Other than Archie, I'd say Mirage and the 2003 Toon are neck and neck as my favorite turtleverse. I love how the 2003 toon made the turtles hardcore and serious like their Mirage roots ( I hated the fact that Shredder was an Utrom though, that was just dumb). The 2003 toon is just like Mirage, and gave the turtles credibility again as kick-ass crime fighters, but unfortunately, looking at some of the turtle's designs for Back To The Sewers, and those big " Bambi " eyes, I fear that their going back to their OT kiddie roots again.

The 2k3 series brought back the intensity of the turtles and gave off that whole "ninja" feel to them.

I finnaly voted for the classic turtle series. It's the first version of the turtles I ever encountered and I like all the portrayals of the characters in that medium and find each engaging. I love the 2k3 series for it's content and dynamics and characters.

I don't know what Sage Ninja thinks, but if there is one portrayal in the 2003 cartoon I don't like, it's Shredder. Back in 1992-1993, I sometimes thought about.
"What if the storywriters created an ultimate TMNT universe by mixing the best of each TMNT universe together". The classic video games already do that. The only TMNT universes I knew back then were the 1987 cartoon, the Archie comics, the movies and the UK Hero Turtles comics, the (don't count the video games and other merchandise stuff), and most I loved Archie and the cartoon. Sometimes I used to draw the TMNT and sometimes it could be Irma, Tatsu and Warrior Dragon on the same paper.

Does anybody know why they have a utrom Shredder in the 2003 cartoon? Is it so Splinter and the TMNT shall be allowed to attack him more violent without the show being considered "too violent" for younger audience (like the 1987 cartoon made with the Foot robots, allowing Leonardo and Raphael to use their weapons as much as they wanted while the show still remained family friendly).

Not really, the show is easily one of the top 5 in the 2000's as far as fights go, they whooped ass on most of their enemies.

Besides, it was just good writing that helped the show deviate farther from the Mirage Comics.

I liked the Demon Shredder. It showed that the Shredder wasn't just a human bad ass, but his evil was Hellspawned and feared through out the millenias. Utrom Shredder was just a dumb concept all together. It's like the writers wanted to some how slip Krang into the 2003 mythos.

If they followed the comics, but it didn't. Utrom Shredder was quite a twist, despite the whole "Shredder=Krang" thing. I think it's more epic that a little squishy brain thing could be a war lord vs. an all powerful demon, who can wipe the floor with you as easily as he'd scratch his butt.

I love them all (except Next Mutation, never seen it). However The Original Toon is what introduced me to TMNT and will always hold a special place in my heart. I loveed the ninja turtles back in the day. I have so many memories from the show, the toys, and how me and my friends longed to be ninja turtles. I remember watching the first movie with my TMNT food tray lol. While it may not be as serious or as deep as any of the other shows I love The Original Toon Universe and it is by far my favorite.

P.S. Turtles In Time for SNES still rocks.

I agree that "Turtles in Time" for SNES still rocks. It's probably the best TMNT video game ever. I also liked the concept of the first one, but it's not that cool.

But the fact that he was a little pink alien did ? UGH! Plus , I think that whole Chre'll/Utrom/ Guardian plot took away from the story. It was always suppose to be about Splinter's vengence against the Shredder because of Shredder's revenge against Yoshi for the death of Nagi.In most universes, yeah. But I thought the new take was well executed. It was refreshing, I suppose.

For the record, I do prefer the traditional Shredder tale, and as I've stated in my City At War thread, it's essential in the Mirage universe, but the Utrom Shredder worked well in the new toon.

How is that more epic than a demon, which in almost every major religion, symbolizes the battle between good and evil ?That's the thing. It's so cliche. I suppose the Demon Shredder was a decent concept, but it was horribly executed. He was generic villain #136, whose every other line went along the lines of "Humans are pathetic! Die!", and who was built up solely through other characters saying how scary he was. In the end, the writing's mostly at fault.

If you dig the whole "Turtles versus larger evil" aspect, the Utrom Shredder pulled that off perfectly well.

We can go back and forth on this all day, so I guess we can agree to disagree.

The 2003 cartoon is good, but I'm surprised it's taking a lead here, as of 5 September 2008. I thought Mirage would get more votes.

I'm suprised also 2k3 is ok but over all there are many other TMNT things that are much better.

I'm also surprised over the movies don't getting more votes. Many like what they grew up with, and many grew up with 1987 cartoon, Archie, movies (don't count action figures and video games).

Next Mutation get the lowest number of votes, just what I suspected. (I don't like Next Mutation so it doesn't matter).

Respect to whoever voted Next Mutation. :) I do like it but the absence of April and Casey makes it seem so different.

I voted the movies, the movies 1-3. That is my favorite part of the TMNT franchise.

For me it was between 2k3 and Mirage, and I voted 2k3. While I love the Mirage comics, 2k3 is much more consistent with it's storytelling and continuity. Mirage volume 1 is all over the place after issue 15 or so. Plus volumes 2, 3, and 4 aren't to the quality of the best volume 1 issues.

IMO Fast Forward was the lowest point for 2k3, but it looks like it's shaping up again now with BTTS.

While I do like the Mirage comics, I dunno, I much prefer to WATCH the Ninja Turtles rather than read them.

I've always preferred watching cartoons than reading comics, not just for TMNT but for any superhero show as well.

Casey Jones isn't in Archie too, and in the 1987 cartoon he's not a main character.

I voted the 1987 cartoon. While I've enjoyed the 2003 version, I prefer Raphael as the lovable smartypants as opposed to angry and rebellious.

Yeah but mainly April's absence was what made it seem weird. Especially since the series seems to follow on from the movies (I see the turtles' sewer home is the same as the Turtles 2 and 3 set) and the turtles have no human contacts apart from Andre (Splinter's chess opponent!).

Why isn't April in the show? While Venus is not, April is one of the first characters I think of when I think of TMNT no matter which version.

Hard choice, but I say the 2k3 toon even if I didn't like Fast Forward so much. I like the characters more than in the OT (not only their designs, but their personality and other things as well) and I think the story is great too.

What I know, it has never been stated if they follow the movies or are an own TMNT version.

What I know, it has never been stated if they follow the movies or are an own TMNT version. It shared some background elements with the movies, like the lair, Splinter's missing ear, etc, but the absense of April, the appearence of Shredder, and numerous other things make it decidedly its own universe.

I would rather see April or Irma than Venus. I'm not a fan of her, and that's not because she's not original or because she's a girl, but because she used those magic balls. She should used martial arts.
