View Full Version : How do you play?

Okay, I admit it. It's been at least two years since I've actually really played with my TMNT figures - or at least it was prior to this weekend. My brother was staying over, and he wanted to play with the TMNT figures. After much coercing, I caved in. Since we were in my room, and the living room was where half of my toys were, we only used the latter half of my collection that was in my room, using other figures for proxies when the others were unavailable (or just have not been made).
We started off with the big simians - my brother had Bigfoot, and I, the Yeti (from the Raphael vs. Yeti 2-pack). I wanted to do sort of a "Street Fighter"-type thing, where two characters faced off, one wins, then we pick two others (or stay with what we had), and continue. He wanted to do a "story".
So thinking off the top of my head, after my Yeti was slain by the Bigfoot in a seven minute battle, I brought in Shredder (standard 2003 version) arrived with five Foot Soldiers (2003 versions) and two Foot Tech Ninja, and proceeded to fight and eventually capture the Bigfoot.
Back at Foot HQ, Karai (2007 version) approached Shredder, and he ordered her to capture the other Thirteen Monsters. The Foot had already captured all of them other than Bigfoot, Jersey Devil, and Spider Aracknor prior to the game's events. Someone (undecided at that point who) had unleashed the monsters once again, and according to legend, if someone else returned the Monsters, they could steal the immortality from the one who let them escape. Shredder's plan was to do so.
Control of the Foot went to my brother, as I used the Jersey Devil. I added an Elite Foot to my brother's forces, as they were continuously attacked and attempted to chase down the lil' bugger. Suddenly, Hun came in, attempted to summon the Purple Dragons (and then, he made a meta-reference "Oh yeah, they never made any!), he made an effort to capture the Jersey Devil. Ultimately, Karai and the Foot beat Hun and captured the Jersey Devil.
Meanwhile, in the sewers, Don, Raph, Mike (all 2003 Mutations) and Leo (standard 2003) prepared to make their way into cyberspace to rescue a piece of Splinter (1987 version). Serling stood by making wisecracks (and since I can't do Marc Thompson's Serling voice, he sounded more like Sean Connery, and ended up saying "You'll rue the day, Michelangelo!"
In Cyberspace, the Turtles battled Cyber Shredder (actually Toon Shredder), and rescued another piece of Splinter. Back in the sewer, the Spider Aracknor slipped its way in, and Hun bounded into the lair to capture it. The Turtles were fighting off Hun, when the Aracknor constricted itself around Mikey....
And my dad called, saying he was coming to pick up my brother.
The point is, I forgot how much fun it was playing with action figures.
Do you still play? And how do you normally do it?

Since most of us here, I think, no longer do it I think the thread would be better known as "How did you play?" (I see no wrong with those who are older and still play with the figures, it's much better than drugs). I played with the TMNT figures with my friends in the early 1990's where one of us (if we were two) took control of the Ninja Turtles side and the other of Shredder's side, and we made up stories based on the 1987 cartoon (Technodrome in Dimension X, and if often featured Shredder kidnapping April and Irma or breaking into power stations looking for Technodrome fuel, we also took the TMNT to Japan).

Oh, I still occasionally play with my figures, and I'm 24. Most of the time I try to do a huge arc that encompasses all of my different figures, Marvel, DC, and Turtles, but it mostly winds up being the same thing re-hashed and I get bored. I haven't played in a while though...

I have a large bucket of extra turtles that I keep in my office at work so that I (or whoever else in my building) can de-stress with them. Playing with action figures is very therapeutic at any age.

It's probably been a good 15 years since I've seriously played with ANY action figures. Maybe I should break out the old guys, what's left of 'em.

I should bring more than one figure to work so I can do that. I can't keep them at my desk because we moved to a "shared workspace environment" a couple of weeks ago. I usually bring one a day to display on my desk, but it's back home for the fig when the day ends.

It's been awhile since I traditonally played with my figures. However, I have made youtube videos with my Batman action figures. So that is a lot like playing with them, only it isn't as relaxed because I have to make sure my hands don't get in the way and there is a half way decent story line.
When I was a kid, I used to play with figures all the time alone and with my best friend. It was usally with Star Wars, or Jurassic Park, and/or random action figures (like Spawn and HobGoblin). We would have two teams, my team vs his team. We would also construct bases for our figures. The figures would battle and sometimes form temporary alliances. Usually this would take hours to playthrough and it would be a giant epic with storylines and such.
If I make a TMNT action figure 'tv' series for youtube, would you guys be interested in seeing it?

Action and Adventure is always the way I played, my Corps action figures were perfect to get eaten by Jurassic Park Dinosaur toys. :)

The last time I honestly remember playing with figures was when I was in 6th grade. I'm now 22.
I do still pose them though when I take them out of storage, but I don't actually make stories with them or anything.

Isn't it better to say how old you were instead of which grade: Each country has it's own school system, in one country a 6th grader may be 10, in another 11 and in one 12.

Oh boy I haven't played with 'em in ages. Every once in a while I'll take a couple off the shelf and just simply admire them, but the only one in my house who's having the time of their life chewing 'em up is my dog! My Jim Lee's Donatello fig is destroyed thanks to that little weiner dog :D!

I haven't play with my toys, other than re-posing them a bit now and then, in many years. Probably the closest I ever get these days is arranging a diorama of figures in a fight scene, or something, for a photo.
That said, when I was a kid, all of my toys used to belong to one "universe" (i.e., G.I.JOEs, Transformers, MOTU, or whatever, all ended up interacting with and beating up on each other). And, as my younger brother and I both shared a bedroom, we used to treat each of our toy collections as separate countries, if you will, each was its own indepedent nation, but characters would cross over for battles, epic war-of-the-worlds storylines, etc.

I keep a few loose figures around on my desk and various shelves, but they're more for display. Occasionally I'll pick one up and fiddle around with it, but that's about it.
But back in the day, oh, about ages 4-10... I used to come up with these elaborate stories involving my toys. They'd be these huge crossover events including TMNT, Ghostbusters, He-Man, GI Joe, Legos, anything I had available, usually I'd drag half of my toy-box out. Then I'd play out these stories, bringing the toys all around the house, or even outside, and I could go on like this for hours. I remember that when a character "died" they'd go back in the toybox, or if I was outside, I had a backpack that I'd throw them into. Aside from the Ghostbuster's firehouse, my parents never bought me any other playsets, so a lot of the time I used Legos to create my terrain, or for example, the (red) living room carpet could be lava, or a large boulder the surface of the moon. Sometimes I myself would be a character, and sometimes I was just the unseen narrator. I'm pretty sure I used to mumble out loud what it was the characters had to do. I do remember using different voices for the different characters.

yes, I still play with my toys, and I ain't ashamed to admit it. but the only time that i really get to play with them is when my niece's and nephew's come over. that's the great thing about having them visit me, it gives me a reason to have fun. although I keep the vintage stuff on a shelf out of their reach and i only let them play with new stuff cause I don't really care about the new ones. I look at collecting 2 ways, If they're packaged, and you collect MOC figs, then don't open them. but if you're the type that opens them, then you should have fun with them. basically, toys were meant to be played with. and I don't care how old I get, I'm still going to play with them.

I haven't played with any figures since I was a bout.. I dunno 12 or 13 I guess, but when ever I get a new TMNT or Winx fig/doll I try to pose them on my shelf in an action shot or something, to try and make the shelf look like a scene instead of Random figs just hanging about. I guess that's pretty close.

Did you had some time travel plot since old TMNT is set in the 1980's and 1990's, Transformers in what then was the future (2005, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers) and masters of the Universe also maybe in the future (at least the He-Man movie, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masters_of_the_Universe).

Filmation He-Man took place on Eternia, a place far off from Earth but it wasn't the future or the Past.
And yeah, my TMNT ended up on Eternia a lot.
A Lot.

But Transformers? And how did they end up on Eternia? Donatello's and Krang's dimensional portals?

Yeah lol. They would just dimension hop to Eternia. Sometimes the Sorceress would be the one to bring them to Eternia, since Castle Grayskull had portals in it too!
As for Transformers, It only took place in the future After the Animated Movie. That jumped the time line 20 years in to the future.

No, there wasn't any kind of time travel thing going on. If I remember right, at least in the case of my younger brother, our "official" storyline was that our toy collections were another dimension where figures from all sorts of franchises got sucked into and had to survive in--kind of like Marvel Comics' Secret Wars or something.

We often played in the basement of our house. The Technodrome was often in Dimension X.
