To plagiarizer myself from your blog:
"Oye, this wangs chung, but I think I know exactly why Wal-mart isn't carrying them anymore. All the freaking Turtle variants that Playmates continues to produce (and nothing else...douche bags.) are freakin' peg warmers. Wal-mart is in the business of making money, and why keep a toy line around that only supplies endless variations on the same four flipping characters. Heck, maybe if more businesses follow Wally World's lead, Playmates may get it's act together and MAKE OTHER CHARACTERS!"

That really is a shame...
I haven't been to a Walmart (besides to run in and out as quickly as possible) for a bit now, and before that I didn't check the toys very often. Mostly because they carried about four figures max for TMNT.
I wonder, does Target still carry the toys? Before FF started, they'd pretty much stopped carrying them around here.

Targets in this area are the best place to find TMNT.
That said, I need to get off of my duff and see what they have. I still haven't even seen Sub-Sewers yet.

yeah, guessed that.
but i doubt that tmnt are in trouble solely because of playmates.
thing is, i suspect toy sales are down across the board (the quality sure is), and that a niche property like tmnt is lucky to have anything at all.
combine that with the fact that the production/manufacturing of toys and buying them is nothing like it was in the 80's-90's...
or..
playmates' aggresive anti-marketing strategies have backfired! maybe in terms of what it costs the company, it saves them money to have such a sparse and (recycled) upcoming line-up? are things so bad?

Playmates needs to really keep in mind what Mattel did with MotU and the US Winx doll line. Alls they did was Variants of the main characters, and they would over stock the main characters. Playmates is getting dangerously close to following in the steps of MotU 2k2. Both were hot sellers until Mattel saturated the market. Then stores started refusing to stock them.

Anyone who is still bothering to care about the strength (or lack there-of) of the TMNT brand should remember that Walmart is bound to change their mind and bring the TMNT back to toy shelves when the Music Turtles are released and save everything.

Y'know, I'm not a Star Wars fan, but Hasbro (is it Hasbro? I thought it was Kenner but I don't think they exist.... Too tired to look) has always done something impressive with their series that I wish Playmates would emulate with the TMNT series. They continuously release interesting variants on the main characters, alongside just about every minor character you can imagine. Guy that shows up for 1/18th of a second in a background shot amongst 200 other people, that even the most eagle eyed fan can't catch? He either already has or will have his own figure. And we can't even get a damn Darius Dunn, Ancient One, Ultimate Drako, Demon Shredder, human Baxter....
Jester
10-07-2008, 12:18 AM
Indeed, Hasbro (formerly Kenner) has done a great job with Star Wars, and GI Joe. Marvel Legends leave something to be desired (wish they were still Toybiz...er...Marvel Toys...heck do they even still exist?) but Star Wars is what any figure maker should strive for. Good figures and an extensive list of characters.
Roseangelo
10-07-2008, 12:23 AM
That's because Hasbro understands the need for and is able to deliver on products catered to the adult fan while simultaneously appealing to the target market of 7-11 boys (or younger, for some products).

Same here... if Playmates could apply the Hasbro-Star Wars strategy I explained previously with normal TMNT scaled figures, they'd be printing enough gold bars to fill Fort Knox.
Seriously... you can't afford to slack off if you're not making money, Playmates. This is like not doing anything all through high school and having graduation day approaching... and you're too damn stupid to realize that you're not going to make it to the ceremony because you're out getting faced with your friends every night instead of cramming.
My analogies suck when I'm sleepy.

i just don't get not releasing stuff...the unreleased ff and movie figures, the as-yet unreleased sub sewer and global missions characters.
i can understand using pre-existing sculpts, even though it's gotten real lame, and even the poor detailing/articulaton, but not releasing toys when you're a toy company is dumb. is playmates stupid?
looking back, these past few years have been littered with mis-steps. the 4th movie was good, but definitely not the way to re-introduce the tmnt to older audiences. fast forward and ninja tribunal had their moments, but the transitions were so jarring and contrived. btts is good so far, but the lack of toys/merchandizing is worrisome. tmnt used to have such awide array of characters, taken from all their incarnations, but since the revival it's been relatively limited and regulated.
so yeah, i'm looking forward to the forever war next year and stuff, but i can't see it "saving" things at tis point.
i dunno. could be the kids who caught the turtles oin 2k3 reach that point where the tmnt are no longer cool to them. five years was about the span of the original peak.

If it gets cut off at the head (the US) then it will have a carry on effect. I guess supplies would just stop even if orders were being placed (unless the orders were high enough -- unlikely as it is -- to meet the cost demands of continued manufacturing), and stores would just have to deal with what is on hand.

I will say, since I never go to WalMart (a location thing, not some political thing) it doesn't really effect me. TMNT is ALL Playmates has now... look at the dreadful failure of the Eon Kid line (though it isn't entirely their fault, about 5 people even watched that show). And now that they're just lackadaisically slumming around with pathetic variants of the overpriced movie line with random monster that have nothing to do with TMNT (which are, ironically the only good thing about them), and no one's buying them. You'd think they would have at LEAST made new toys for BTTS, since they made them do Cybercrap to sell figures... and they have nothing to do with the show at all, yet again. They force variants and don't even watch the show?
I'm sorry, but how poorly did the FF line sell? How Poorly that a bunch of 6 dollar action figures with hundreds of different collectible characters fail on such a level that putting the same 4 10 dollar turtles out over and over is a good idea? If it wasn't for the mini-line, and the fact I still need half the first 2 waves of the movie line, I'd never buy anything from them again.

What really made me sad is they had a Battle Jacket from DB for $10, but I didn't have any dough on me at the time, and I hadn't any other forms of payment at that time... TARPON SPRINGS - When a work crew tried to unearth some gopher tortoises on the site of a proposed Wal-Mart recently, it stirred up more than soil.
Instead, workers unleashed the ire of local activists who gathered Tuesday night on the steps of Tarpon Springs City Hall and waved banners and flaunted photos of a backhoe.
The group's hand-painted signs said, "Bury Wal-Mart, not the turtles," "Wal-Mart is an environmental predator" and "First the turtles, next 800 trees, then our heritage and way of life."
"We're asking the Board of Commissioners to find the will and compassion to intervene," said Dory Larsen, a member of Friends of the Anclote River, which opposes the Wal-Mart project.
In response, the mayor recommended that the city write regulatory agencies and Wal-Mart to put its concerns about the incident on record. Two other commissioners also criticized the company, which said it made an innocent mistake.
Wal-Mart and its consultant, Lotspeich and Associates of Winter Park, had obtained a permit from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to relocate up to 10 tortoises from the site, which is on U.S. 19 near the Anclote River.
But before disturbing the animals, the retailer was first required to secure all of its other permits from other government agencies. And when the tortoises were removed, some permits were still pending, officials have said.
On March 23, state wildlife enforcement agents were called after activists spotted a backhoe on the property. When a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer arrived, the tortoises were already loaded in a truck headed for a mitigation bank in Volusia County. The officer ordered they be released back into starter holes.
Members of the Sierra Club, the Friends of the Anclote River and the Wal-Mart Alliance for Reform Now organized Tuesday's rally at City Hall to bring attention to the matter.
After the protest, the dozen or so activists filed into City Hall to express their frustration and concern for the creatures during the public comment portion of the meeting.
Speakers asked the commissioners to investigate and see if the eight turtles were still alive.
One critic said this was just one more example of Wal-Mart's disregard for the environment, fair trade and labor laws.
Larsen called for the city to write letters to Wal-Mart and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
"Let them know that you do not approve of the laws being broken within the city of Tarpon Springs limits, that you do not approve of a developer having wanton disregard for Tarpon Springs' permitting procedures, and that you hope that they enforce the strictest penalties allowable, including, but not limited to, revoking the permit entirely," she told commissioners.
Mayor Beverley Billiris recommended the city attorney draft a letter from the board to Wal-Mart and regulatory agencies to share their displeasure with the violations.
Commissioner Robin Saenger said the actions of the nation's largest retailer show a pattern of disingenuousness.
And Commissioner Peter Dalacos suggested passing a resolution to condemn Wal-Mart's actions.
On Wednesday, Wal-Mart spokesman Michael Mills said it was all an innocent mistake.
"We had an incidental take permit which allows us to move or kill the turtles," he said. "But Wal-Mart decided the right thing to do was to move the turtles to a conservation area where they will hopefully lead happy and healthy lives."
He said factors such as the weather and that the mitigation area was "filling up with other tortoises" caused the retailing giant to act prematurely.
"In our effort to do the right thing for the community and the gopher tortoises, we may have moved ahead of some paperwork or process," he said.
No tortoises died in the move, he said.
"Someone has been there since and all eight are fine," he said.
Not just Turtle Toys that have problems with Wal-mart...

There were never Lost Season toys. The Turtle Mystics don't count, because they were modeled after the video game.
Um, I said that they were never released, but should have been long ago - in other words, if Playmates had more than 3 brain cells between all of their decision-makers, they would have released at least a few to capitalize on the Lost Season being aired.

I don't blame Walfart for dumping TMNT, they never sold...peg warmers like Jester said. How many different versions of the same damn toy do ya need? (ie: those mutations figs)
My nephews got TMNT toys and the durn thing broke, no durability. And no they're not rough with toys. I think it was the SWAT set from TRU cos my uncle's in the SWAT team.
Target and TRU, they still carry. Target here tho, slow sell for TMNT...I watch the pegs and see what goes faster.
It's a joke really...TMNT toys is dragging cos they don't know what to make I guess.

We keep telling them what to make, they just don't flippin' listen to us. All Playmates can think about is how many times they can reuse the same molds on their figures, and all Peter Laird thinks about is his nonexistent perception of "play value".

And WTF? How the frak did Playmates get the liscense for the Star Trek figs??? I thought Art Asylum had the monopoly on Star Trek?! The last time Playmates had their grubby hands on Star Trek was when DS9 was on the air way back in 94!
Actually...Playmates even produced figures for Star Trek: Voyager.
Sorry, a pal of mine has a collection of Star Trek figures, including Janeway and Nelix.

Geesh.... K.B Toys is still around??? It went out of business and closed here like 5 years ago. I think there's like 1 in Seattle and that's it. When they were doing their going out of business sale I got a bunch of TMNT stuff. *checks* Oh...there isn't one in Seattle anymore....the closest one is in North Bend....which is like an hour North East of here.
There is one in my old hometown Milpitas that's been there forever. I got my Quarry figure there in fact. They barely ever have turtles stuff though.

Oh, I've seen KB's... they are STILL closing them, but I know of a couple malls that still have them./ Of course, for the longest time, even before FF they stopped carrying TMNT toys.
I only go there for the clearance stuff.

The News I posted came from a very reliable source who wants to go unnamed so as to keep his job. And remember this isn't supposed to happen until the Spring.
Secondly no I've seen this sign at the only Wal-Mart in my area (out of maybe 30 in the PA area) for some time.
My store has about 8 wave 1 Mini-Mutants and 1 Alien Hunter Donatello and they're all in the clearance isle.

So is this little embargo going for DVD's too? They already cut out everything animated, they just have the 4 theatre movies.

Seems like they'd give at least one more shot for the holiday season. Maybe get a shipment or something closer to Thanksgiving? That sounds like the case.

As I've stated about a billion times now, half the Wal-Mart stores have the figures the other half have not had any sort of TMNT figures for about a year or two now.

-->> ..eeshh .. :ohwell:
.. found out the store by me is kinda a ' CENTRAL HUB ' as it were.
Not only the W M with the most foot traffic .. but where many MANY MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNY returns from across the country are taken too. In fact ..one of the biggest turn - over for returns in Southern Colorado.
Maybe this plays into the TMNT distribution issue, maybe not..
..whatever the case, Wal-mart's distribution in general is pretty f7cked up and very weird.
