View Full Version : Whats up with the subpar fights
The Terror of Death

I know I'm not the only one disappointed in the fight scenes this season. Aside from the Shredder vs TMNT fight in Something Wicked it seems like the writers are trying not to include any big fight scenes. I've seen the turtles pull off a few fancy moves here and there but for the most part the fights are nothing more than quick and boring scuffles. I can think of of only two reasons for this. 1. Due to this seasons budget constraints fast paced and overly complicated movements must be kept to a minimum. 2. The writers no longer feel the need to put that much effort in the fights. Its saddening to see this happen to a show that use to pride itself on its "nonstop butt kicking ninja action". There's still a lot of action but little so far has made me say wow that was awesome. I hope by seasons end we get at least one or two awesome scenes that could rival previous seasons.

Watching Justice League recently made me laugh turtle's idea of fight scenes. There's people getting the crap kicked out of them in JLU and turtles doesn't even begin to compare. Same with Batman, people getting tossed through walls and people getting beat till they can't move.

Terror, I think the writers are the wrong people to blame, it's the storyboard artists and directors that do most of the action. The script probably just said "They fight" it's up to the artistic team to decide how that fight plays out.

Thanks for telling me. The art department needs to get it together.:x

It's been a problem since Fast Forward...cheaper animation means less fights. Airing Spectacular Spider-Man repeats before the show just highlights the problem.

Ba-ba-ba-ba-budget cuts! Fighting means lots of movement means fluid animation means more frames means more money.
Some of the fights in the earlier seasons were spectacular (I'm looking at you, Shredder Strikes Back), and it was do in no small part to more money being laid down for the show.
And I know people don't want to acknowledge it for some reason, but the animation was noticably more fluid in Fast Foward than it is now.

I thought all the Purple dragon fights this season were great, what was wrong with them?
During the Baxter ep and during the Foot Turtles ep they had fight scenes with the Purple dragons, I thought those scenes were good.
Hell, I even liked the Cyber Shredder fights.

As sad as it is to admit, I have to say that I agree. There were at least a few pretty decent fights in FF. I haven't been impressed with ANYTHING this season has shown thus far. The last time I saw a truly good fight was in the episode "Ninja Tribunal" where the turtles are fighting the wooden soldiers on the rooftop. After that battle everything went downhill fast! The NINJA TRIBUNAL saga (apart from the first few episodes) was like....the beginning of the end. FAST FORWARD was a fatal blow to the TMNT series and (so far) BACK TO THE SEWER just seems to be nothing more than a final dying gasp of air to the entire series. It's quite a disappointment in my opinion.

My God, the fights in that show are amazing. Watching the Spidey Venom fight gave me an eyegasm.
But aside from that, I don't think the fights in this season have been that bad. Something Wicked and Hacking Stockman both had good Shredder fights.
Of course, my personal favorite of the series so far has been the first part of the fight against Saki in Exodus Part 1. Nothing compares to that.

The first seasons had some really good fight sequeneces. It was definitely cool to see how much more intense the fighting got as the seasons progress and the TMNT grew. The problem with the fights this season is that they are over before they even begin. One punch two punch, someone's down, fight's over. That's my gripe with it. It could be good fights if they gave them some time to actually go at it.

I agree. That fight was wicked. I mean, DAMN, the TMNT and Splinter attacked Saki so violently and visciously, basically tearing his human disguise off, it just felt that after all this time they were all severely pissed of Shredder and wanted to kill him off once and for all.
Speaking of which.. am I the only one disturbed that despite being like.. twice their size and whatnot the Dark Turtles are basically big pushoevers to the originals? They're like.. 2 punches and then they cower and run for the hills. The only time they poses a threat was the first fight when they had the element of surprise and caught the turtles unarmed. After that, they turned out to be real weaklings.

OMG, that was a fantastic fight! I mean Leo and Splinter were shooting him full of arrows. Crazy!

you should know that you're a writer. ;)
but besides the point I don't think the fights have been all that bad. Some of them actually got me excited, like the fight where the "controlled" turtles tried to kill Casey.
or the first fight with Shredder in Something Wicked in cyber space.
And the fight with Shredder and the turtles over stockman was pretty nice.
I will say that I noticed that Don is the only who has had a solo fight with Shredder that was pretty cool and handed him his ass. :D

Well this goes for many bad guys. In "Karate Schooled" Khan owned Turtles but in Identity Crisis he was easily beaten and that goes to many other villain. Touch and Go were first really tough but next time turtles meet them they are easily defeated.
Of course TMNT get better with their fighting skills but how come villains don“t improve in fighting, the reason they lose is storyline reason. I mean this would be kinda bleak show if turtles were killed already in first episode.

I thought coolest fight was the one where the turtles and Hun where all fighting Bishiop on the train. That was friggen sweet! 8)

I agree. That is one of the many highlight battles for me from the first 4 seasons. I do wish Don would have had a bit more screen time in that fight and I find it very hard to believe that Bishop could easily stand his ground against all four turtles, Karai and Hun, but nonetheless it is definitely my favorite fight from the series that didn't involve the turtles fighting the Foot or Shredder.

I think it was Hun on the Run, but I'm not too sure.
Anyways the fight scenes are ok, not too great not too bad. Although it really did bother me that the Dark Turtles were just bigger meaner weaker versions of the Real Turtles. Yeah, this does happen to a lot of villains (not including the Shredder and all his incarnations and Bishop) the first fight they are f***ing unstoppable, the next fight they get owned in like 30 seconds. As for my favorite fights they're probably Mike vs Kluh, Rat King vs Turtles and Casey, TMNT and Splinter VS Saki in Exodus part 1, and The 2nd Time around fight with the TMNT and Casey vs the Elite, Hun, Shredder and hordes and hordes of Foot. None of the Fast Forward fights were really that memorable in my opinion, and I missed like the last three BTTS eps so yeah....

i think they are using little fights becuz of budget. they are probably trying to save up money for the dtv movie. thye are probably trying to make it really good and saving up for that.

The only fight that actually stood out in my mind was the mecha turtle fight. The fights have been lackluster throughout the series. They were much worse in season one though. Almost every foot encounter starts with a block, then a blow to defeat them. The Lost Season takes the cake when it comes to lackluster fights though. Almost every fight's a swirly magic blast.

You really think so?:-? If you liked the turtlebot fight I don't see why you would think the other fights were lame.

Rewatch the fight and you'll see why. It has a real flow to it. It felt like martial arts. Like I said, most of the fights were simply block the foot's attack, then knock him away. It was most noticeable in season 1.

It was most noticeable in season 1.That fight was terrific, but Season 1 had its moments too. Most notably in "Shredder Strikes Back Part II". The Turtles fighting the Foot Elite was excellently coreographed and animated.
The thing with the TMNT fights is that, when they're done well, they're done really well, but otherwise they're fairly generic. I think the best fights in TMNT easily outshine the best fights in say, Justice League or the like, but we're talking about two different styles. Justice League may have more brutal fights, lots of fists to jaws and whatnot, but TMNT excels at fight coreography, which I think is more fun to watch.

In the early part of season one, the fights were not well detailed. For example when Leonardo takes on the foot in "The Shredder Strikes Part 1" you just see quick slashes of the sword and a round about kick then some ninjas flying (or when they pause the screen....they did this with Mikey). No, no, no, I want to see EVERY kick, EVERY block, EVERY punch, EVERY impact of the weapons. This is (one of the many things) that is hurting BTTS already because the fights are so mediocre. The one where they fought Cyber Shredder was decent but still no where as great as the older stuff.
