hi all,
ok -- a couple of questions concerning the rare tmnt misprint...
1) is it confirmed that only 800-1000 copies survived? surely others were kept at the time of the recalling?
2) what would you pay for a copy in F-VF? (can you tell where this is leading?)
i have a chance to buy one, that is all, but don't let that stop you giving me a realistic answer
thanks
john

As far as I know, I don't think there is any confirmation on the exact number of copies that survived (as is normally the case when such things are recalled). But all estimates I have seen, put it at less than 1,000 copies. Pete himself has said something like "very few copies are known to exist". I tend to agree with that as, besides this fellow who showed up recently with about 20 or so copies, very few have been actively sold on ebay, at least that I'm aware of.
As far as pricing, I think the cheapest I've seen for the book in any condition is around $180 or so, with a number of sales in the $200-$300 range, and some high grade copies, CGC 9.0 and above selling for $350-$1000
Hope that helps!

hi, yes it does help...thanks very much.
i've decided not to buy at this stage. the rumour mill is just too vague. i work for comic dealers and if 60,000 were printed, and then recalled, they wouldn't have been destroyed. turtles were already pretty big when this comic went to print, there has to be more than 1000 of them that survived.
if a guy just turns up with 20, there's bound to be more. the price of my potential deal was pretty good, but can' t afford it anyway as i'm just about to travel Central America for 3 months and need the money.;)
I had made a call to the company that printed the book and talked to a gentleman who was there when the books where printed in 1987 and he told me that he DOES remember the books being recalled and dumped into their garbage bins at the printers. He said Mirage kept I believe one case or so of the books and the others were destroyed.
