Playmates?

http://i39.tinypic.com/2u8ied1.jpg
This pic is from the TMNT fighting game thread. To the far right of the image under a banner for the 25th anniversary is an image of a classic Playmates figure and right under it what looks like a mashup of NECA and Playmates the caption reads:
"In addition to the re-releases, be on the lookout for these brand new TMNT action figures."

Could Playmates actually be getting on the ball and releasing Marvel Legends/NECA style figures we've been screaming for, is is Satan doing figure eights?

The magazine scan you provided? Nintendo Power. Good eye, though! I just skimmed over it and thought it was a NECA figure, but you're right, it is something new! Are these the comic figures Peter hinted at a while back? And if so, is this the reason the NECA wave 2 has been MIA?

At first it looked like a movie figure repainted to look like comic tmnt. It seems to be an all new sculpt but.. too little too late? I mean it's nice they're going in this direction I'll give them props for that, but we just got comic TMNT which Playmates will not be able to top in terms of quality. This new tmnt figure seems to have the same articulation as the movie figures which was great at the time but isn't perfect. If they branch out and make someone other than the turtles, and they give them the same effort as their tmnt then I'll be impressed (they always skimp on the secondary characters). In the mean time I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that NECA still has the rights to comic TMNT. If Playmates messed up my chances in getting Shredder, the Foot, and the Foot Elite for THAT figure? I'll be mighty pissed.

oh for crying out loud! Now I am going to have to save for TWO F'n sets of figures. I am going to get in big $h!t for this!

But I am totally pumped and now need to find this new issue of Nintendo power. So is this the Dec. issue?

Maybe it's the size of the pic or just wishful on my part, but the design seems smaller than normal TMNT toys these days. More like the original line's size or maybe even smaller. Could my prayers for 1/18 (3.75") scale Turtles be answered? It would make the most since seeing as all of Playmates other big lines (Star Trek and Terminator) will have this scale and it leaves NECA to continue what it's been doing. Damnit, I must know the size of this figure!

PS Yeah! A Smash Bros. style fighter! I can't wait!:D

Well the cat's out of the bagm knew about this all for some time.
Playmates Shredder looked allot like NECA's until Peter saw it and said to beef it up.

Peter hinted at a while back? And if so, is this the reason the NECA wave 2 has been MIA?
Yes, & yes NECA is very upset with Mirage over this happening.

IMO this is too little too late from Playmates.

Even though they blatantly gave us the finger when we all complained about the crap that are the Music Turtles, they finally decided to try to appease us with something closer to what we've been asking for (Mirage seems to be doing this a bit themselves, as Gary starts to realize he hole he's driven the entire company into).

But what is it exactly that we're getting? Ok, the picture isn't that great, but from what I can tell it really doesn't resemble anything in any of the comics. It stands upright, has more articulation, and a bit of a wash to the paint job, but I can't label it as being of any particular style.

This doesn't fill any of my needs. Unless better pictures reveal that there is a specific source of influence, I'm willing to say that I will not be buying these (assuming any stores are still carrying TMNT by the time they get released).

And if this is the reason all the NECA stuff is delayed, you can damn well bet I won't be buying this.

Well, I hinted at a guess I and murph both had as to why NECA isn't returning e-mails and calls to Mirage and pretty much flat out ignoring them to Ryan Brown who then said he knows it's a shame what playmates did to NECA in his blog.
It would seem perhaps Murph and I may be on the money with this one.
If it's true I swear I'm burning down Playmates head offices.:D

The one odd bit is that it would have been smart to have Wave 2 of NECA's figures out this Fall as planned, long before Playmates put anything out. Playmates' figures really wouldn't have affected NECA's sales at all. So if that is the reason for the delay/lack of communication, it'd seem to be a vindictive thing more than anything else.

I'd like to point out this other scan:
http://i43.tinypic.com/2ia3gk7.jpg

The toy looks about how as accuate Spectacular Spiderman toys are to the show. Could the rumors of the 2k3 series ending be true? Could this be the next TMNT series? And sence it's the 25th, could we be getting, dare I say, Ultimate TMNT with things from everywhere?

I'm probably wrong (and crazy, can't forget that.), but either TMNT is going to sink or their finally giving the fans what they want: everything.

Think it's time for someone to spill the beans already.

Doesn't matter I won't be buying these now. I think Mirage/Playmates just lost a heck of a lot more respect from me for this than the respect they lost from continually making lousy toys/licensing. I'm not usually a complainer either but after seeing those awesome NECA figures and now we're not going to get them and they haven't even bothered to put out a press release or anything? I've been anticipating those figures for months and they left me to hang. That just... sucks. Not just for me but for everyone. I sure hope everyone pissed about this voices their opinion and lets Playmates/Mirage know what a**holes they're being.

Okay, I agree with what's being said about Playmates and NECA, but I feel there isn't enough info yet. This does nothing but rise questions.

1) Does this toy have a supporting media? Cartoon, movie, game, comic (new non-Mirage, something like Archie), etc.

2) If so, what media and all media related questions.

3) If not, why are Playmates copying another (better) company and why the hell are Mirage letting them copy another company?

There's plenty more questions and I think of a new one every min. Really, nothing adds up without more info.

Mirage or well Gary and playmates are partially to blame because they didn't believe that Playmates making mirage based toys at the same time NECA is would effect the deal with NECA.
Honestly, I think NECA are acting like a bunch of babies and this hopefully will get resolved in Feb. at the NYC comicon.

Playmates & NECA should be working together on this line and sharing profits.
NECA has worked with a number of other mainstream companies and helped them make amazing products, so there's no excuse for Playmates not to jump all over this opportunity besides them and Gary being lazy and not wanting to do paper work.
and now to answer your questions.
1) No, as I've been saying the show is done after this and these toys are souly based on the mirage comics.
2)read answer to number 1
3)Because NECA did so well that Playmates now wanted to take the opportunity to cash in on the collectors market and didn't see any better time than the 25th anniversary.
Gary & Playmates both thought that this wouldn't effect the specilty and comic shop based NECA TMNT figures line because these will be for sale at mainstream shops like Target & Toys R Us, but as they are seing it has effected NECA in the form of them not communicating with Mirage at all.

EDIT: post questions, i'll try and answer them the best I can.

I think NECA is overreacting, but I also think this was a bit of bad form, especially if the rest are as comic based as this looks. Maybe we'll luck out though, and they will calm down.

EDIT:

In retrospect, I think someone should suggest pointing out the SUccess of DC Direct even in light of Mattel's Comics accurate figures to Neca. It might help.

You know what happened? It seems that Good news and Bad news had a secret affair and spawned an unwanted bastard child named Confusing Mess. Now, poor little Confusie is wandering the streets looking for a home.

That said, YES, I would rather NECA keep going, and they really should have gotten Series 2 out sooner, so they're not entirely blameless here too.

I have to see these up close in Toyfare or something for me to make a decision. I probably will buy them, though... keep in mind, by "probably" it took me almost 2 years to complete the TMNT movie line turtles (JUST the turtles), I only have one minimutant, and I haven't started on the NECA TMNT line yet.

Wow. They look more like the movie figures than the original figures. And there's no way they have the same quality as the NECA figures. If I was NECA I'd be pissed too. NECA shouldn't have to work with Playmates on this, Playmates wasn't doing a comic line. They have the new cartoon, oh wait they're not making toys for that. They have the old cartoon, oh wait they just want to reissue toys for that. **** Playmates, and Mirage for sideswiping NECA.

Yeah, I guess Playmates just couldn't stand it that NECA made comic turtles. So now Playmates is making their own versions of comic turtles. Well, NECA's comic turtles look 100% better than those.

I might buy one though, probably Leo, just for the heck of it.

Now, what Playmates should do is make all new, articulated, 6" sculpts of characters from the original toon. That's probably not going to happen though....

I totally agree. Even if it's not what we want or expect in the TMNT, we are still getting products out. The animated series is almost done, and if we complain and complain, other TMNT related things might end as well.

Did you see series 2 with Shredder, Foot/Elite, April, Mousers, and even Utroms?! Did you see the pictures of the new figures? They're ridiculous. Here's an idea, why didn't Playmates make proper toys of the last cartoon, or use this "highly articulated super detailed but really not" design for an old cartoon line instead of lazily reissuing the original figures? I have a feeling we'd all be happy if NECA continued with the comic stuff and Playmates used this idea for a brand new original cartoon line. Instead they're giving us crap and taking away the good stuff.

Yeah true fan my ass.

I'm chiming in really late on this one because I'm sure most of you already know what I'm going to say.

Yes, it's screwed up that this is (alegidly) screwing up the neca deal.

Yes, it is too little to late.

Yes, it is terribly obvious that the ONLY reason Playmates is doing this is because of the success of the NECA toys.

No, NECA is not handling in a manner they should be if they care about their fan base.

As for the quality of this Playmates line. The jury is still out for me. Do I think that we will ever see the kind of quality and care that was in the original line? No, the Playmates of today is a completely different company than it was in the early 90's. But hey, if these Playmates Turtles do well, and they raise the bar a little on the entire line, then atleast theres that right?

No, this is not the ideal situation, but make do with whacha got kids.

Maybe this is a more passive stance then you would have expected from me in the past...but frankly...I'm tired of being angry.

Why should NECA be pissed? If the Playmate toys are being targeted at kids at retail stores and will cost about the same as the current figures, this shouldn't be much of a concern for NECA, whose figures are sold a specialty and comic shops and cost anywhere from $15 to $25 dollars, hardly mainstream items.

Yeah let me know when they make those. What I'm looking at is modified movie bucks with hardly any detailing and lots of photoshop. Look at their weapons for gods sake...

But yeah if these are based on the cover to vol 4 #1 they're not that bad. A sort of combo between Pete/Dooney's styles. But here's the print from toynewsi:

"Celebrate 25 years of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with figures designed after their original comic styling! These classic figures represent the origins of the Turtles and feature all their trademark style and accessories. Collect all 4 turtles, Shredder, Splinter, and the Foot, each packaged with a reprint of the original comic. Or choose from figures that recreate Playmates' original 10 figures, based on the classic television series, complete with classic accessories and detailing. Cowabunga! Blister card packaging."

So they come with the first issue of the original series. If that's what they're based on that's just plain sad.

post questions, i'll try and answer them the best I can.
Any ideas what size these are? From the new pics, it's pretty clear that their still movie/Marvel Legends size, but I'd like to know for sure. If they aren't in the same old movie scale, then it helps Playmates/Mirage's side that it doesn't affect NECA.

Anyone notice the text on TNI? EDIT: See Ectocooler beat me to it :P

Their coming with comics. That's neat, but I won't buy them for that as it's nothing I want to read. If it was Archie comics, then I'd be interested.

Really, the only thing I'm liking is the body sculpt. They look more like an update to the 88 Turtles than Mirage based ones. Has just the right amout of retro feel to them. However, with the movie tooling and with no variety of colors (I can not bring myself to buy 4 of the same figure without them being different colors), I doubt I'll get these.

For kids' toys they look ok.

Not much of a positive statement there, but I can agree somewhat

Why should NECA be pissed? If the Playmate toys are being targeted at kids at retail stores and will cost about the same as the current figures, this shouldn't be much of a concern for NECA, whose figures are sold a specialty and comic shops and cost anywhere from $15 to $25 dollars No single figure has cost $25, regular retail is about $13-15, hardly mainstream items.

NECA should be pissed because they ARE targeting their audience, and intentionally! I already mentioned some of the other more viable options Playmates could have done (like I dunno a cartoon that's brand new and on the air right now). Let me just give you a really good example of this happening in the past. SOTA Street Fighter were sold only at comic shops/specialty stores. They were about $15 as well. At the same time Jazwares who was actually working with SOTA watered down the sculpts a lot and sold them only at KBToys. The president of SOTA said that the Jazwares figures outsold their own figures by an incredibly large sum and was making more of a profit. The SOTA line didn't last too long after. Many collectors online were buying those Jazwares figures because they were cheaper even though the quality was fare worse. If you give people an option, especially in a recession, they're going to go with the cheaper option most of the time (hence why Wal-Mart is taking over our country). Then NECA can't compete. Sure there are many of us who would choose quality over quantity (NECA vs Playmates) but it's not enough to support a toyline even a specialty one.

NECA is just going to give up because they have tons of other licenses. I can't blame them, but I'd really like them to at least finish with series 2.

Ecto, I agree that that NECA has every right to be angry. And that SOTA example you gave was a great reference (hell, I have those Jazware figures :-P)

But I still don't think that claming up like they have and stonewalling Mirage is the correct, or mature response.

Yeah that's not very professional (though neither is sideswiping them). So no one wants to be the bigger man and swallow some ego/pride and get these figures out it seems. NECA has been just awful with customer service, I hear horror stories all the time. As a company I've never liked them, but their toys are 100x better than anything Playmates can put out so I have to side with them.

I'd give Mirage/Playmates some brand loyalty if they hadn't been force feeding people crap for so many years. Finally we get an option to get a turtle fix somewhere else and they stomp all over it like some sort of turf war. :P

My friends are all excited over these figures calling me and here I am being Mr. Downer but I can't help it.

And look at those repaints in the other thread... pantsless Shredder? WTF? I think that should be Playmates logo from now on. "The company that doesn't care enough to put pants on"

Where has anything said that the NECA stuff is cancelled because of the Playmates stuff?

Sounds like someone just made that up. The NECA license was very broad. The only thing they couldn't make toys of was the current cartoon stuff.

I doubt there is a conflict of interest at all.

Those playmates figures aren't bad, they remind me of Michael Dooney's art too.
I can't blame NECA for being pissed, they should alone have had the rights to the comic book look, their proffits from a second line will surely be affected by this, although I did only see NECA figs in record and comic shops, no toy shops in Ireland carried them.
I hope they still go ahead and release more figs anyway.

Those cartoon pics that are throughout the nintendo power article, and feature the guys with red bandanas, I wonder are they from the animated special that's coming out next year?

Seems like a big conflict of interest since before the deal playmates wasn't making any comic figures and now after NECA has put out one wave Playmates has plans for several. Read my post about Jazwares v Sota.

And I don't think Vaughn is going to be happy you called his source just made up. Read his post too, pretty sure he gets his info from Murphy or someone closer to what's going on.

Newton Gimmick
12-17-2008, 02:11 PM
Murphy has wrote time and time again about how NECA failed to deliver on their promises.

And NECA's wave 1 is done. It's no longer in stores. So Playmates doing similar figures now, won't effect their sales.

NECA should have gotten their stuff together much sooner. You snooze, you lose as they say.

And most of the speculation here caused the sudden outrage that Playmates had killed the NECA figures, which is why I said it sounded made up. You immediately said that Ecto, before Vaughn had even posted. NECA's cutting off of communication with Mirage has been going on for quite some time. So I don't see how that can correlate with Playmates.

Both companies can put out 25th figures. The 25th anniversary is shaping up to be a big thing and kudos to Playmates for doing some interesting stuff.

No I didn't, I said I hope these don't replace NECA's stuff, and then Vaughn confirmed it, at which point I got angry. Before that I was indifferent. I agree NECA's lack of communication is pretty appalling, but they've always been that way, with customers, with comic shops (I used to work at a comic store, my friend the manager says they're ridiculous on the phone), they're just not very professional.

From what we've heard it sounds like Playmates didn't have any interest in comic figures. Please tell me what they've done with the literally dozens of figures they keep showing off but don't release. They've been snoozing worse than NECA. We don't even know if NECA was going to manufacture those figures but can't. I'd love for someone from Mirage/Playmates/NECA to speak out but they aren't so they're taking heat for it. And since no one is speaking out I'm siding with NECA because on face value it looks like they're getting shoved out of the picture. You're siding with Playmates/Mirage with the same exact information, and that's ok, we just disagree.

Also NECA wave 1 is still in stores, my comic store was able to reorder more wave 1, and the black and white box sets just came out. Series 2 should be coming out or out already but we don't know what happened behind the scenes. The sales effected will be lack of NECA series 1 product selling at the comic stores now, which would hurt future orders. I got a call from the comic store friend and he said everyone was excited and some people were even cheering in the store... (I'm honest to God not making this up).

And while the 25th anniversary is for the comic, they're also celebrating all the TMNT history. Instead of reissuing the original figures new toon figures (instead of a second, worse version of comic figures) would have been awesome!

Of course if NECA can continue and does, and we get series 2, then I have no problems at all. But if in any way/shape/form series 2 is canceled because of those playmates figures, then I'm going to be very angry at all of them because there is no way Playmates will EVER match the quality of those figures. Those are sculpts by the freaking four horsemen dude.

Well I understand that you've made up your mind to hate whatever Playmates does, but that doesn't change the facts.

It's also no surprise to me that Playmates decided to go a similar route, since the moment the NECA figures came about everyone on the Earth said "Why couldn't Playmates do stuff like that?", so why get upset when they do?

The first few posts here were total speculation and were loosely "confirmed" from Vaughn. That's hardly what I'd call a signed, sealed story and reason for anyone to go get the pitchforks.

NECA isn't sending these figures out to retail anymore. You may be able to get them to comic shops, but NECA's spots on mass store shelves like FYE are alloted to other stuff now.

If NECA chooses not to make anymore figures that's NECA's fault, not Playmates. It'd be a pretty stupid move on NECA's part as well. But you can't fault Playmates for trying to make a buck and for trying to celebrate the 25th of TMNT.

What I don't think you understand, is the deal with NECA was basically a stroke of luck that Mirage was able to circumnavigate Playmates on. Laird confirmed as much in an interview. Playmates was reportedly pissed when they found out about the deal by and large, and that's when all of this rubbish started.

I've been watching this thread with growing concern and horror, feeling like I don't have anything to contribute.

And well, I still don't. But I just want to say that if I never get NECA series 2, then I'll never forgive them OR Playmates. If it's true that there is no legal reason for NECA not to release it, and it's just sour grapes, then they should BURN.

It's almost enough to make me want to start focusing solely on the comics and original art from now on. I can't even look at my vintage figs without feeling sick and betrayed, knowing what that company has become. But while I know I'll continue to collect the figs put out from 88-98, Playmates can count on never earning another cent from me ever again. I hope they all go bankrupt, homeless, and die a long slow death from starvation and exposure to the elements.

Playmates is making some 25th Anniversary figures, they're based on the classic comic designs. This may have hurt NECA's feelings and may be why we haven't seen series 2 yet. Although this is unconfirmed beyond a minor blurb from Vaughn that lacked details.

Since then, everyone has been doing their usual Playmates + Mirage = Everything wrong with TMNT rant that fills pretty much every other topic on this site.

They are indeed two different markets though, Capcom gave the Street Fighter license of toys to various companies at once. Collectors statues meant a different thing etc. Even for action figures of the same type Street Fighter and Street Fighter vs SNK counted as different licenses so there were two companies making same type of figures.. It is especially true for collectors/mainstream toys, SOTA's Street Fighter line and there was a line for stores which even used SOTA's sculps because of an agreement but the two lines were different companies. So yeah.

I'm not saying its low for Playmates to do it, but if thats NECA's reasoning then they are crybabies, its all within the contract, I mean NECA swooped SOTA's Street Fighter line by getting SF4 as well should SOTA be pissed? Not to mention if the line was successful what kind of company would stop making money over a hissyfit? Its a business afterall, they'd be pissed but whatever.

As far as the toys I like them a lot, to me they look more like the original vintage toys remade modernly, and they're awesome so I'll still buy them.

Same for the bandanas too, I believe. Personally, I don't like that their all the same color. That's one of the biggest reasons I haven't gotten the NECA figures yet. Their all the same mold (except for hand) and the same colors. One of the few things these Playmates molds have over NECA is that each Turtles sems to have their own torso mold. Still, them all being the same color annoys me in toy form.

And you sir get a cookie for being smart and getting it.
those bodies look just like the damn new movie tmnt, it's pathetic how lazy Playmates is!
Now, what Playmates should do is make all new, articulated, 6" sculpts of characters from the original toon. That's probably not going to happen though....
That would have been an intelligent marketable idea and both Playmates and Peter Laird don't see any reason to make toys based on the old toon when they can just re-release the old toys, Peter has stated this himself.
weapons look horrible to boot.
Yes they do and I do believe we've seen those weapons used before, they look as if they may be the movie ones or the 2k3 figures ones.
I totally agree. Even if it's not what we want or expect in the TMNT, we are still getting products out. The animated series is almost done, and if we complain and complain, other TMNT related things might end as well.
True fans will love every TMNT product out there, no matter what. These are just my two cents, but almost look on the positive side guys.
Dude, no if you keep accepting sh1t that's what they're going to keep giving you.
I've been about as true of a fan as anyone can get for years and while I do like many more things than most of the fans I can see when we're getting ripped off and people are being sneeky and underhanded like playmates.
I'd rather turtles go away again and come back again and the next time it comes back have someone smart in controll.
That's just my 10 cents.
What total ********. True fans would like something new because I do. True fans will like anything given to them because they're sheep. Do you even buy toys? Did you buy the NECA stuff?
BING-O WAS HIS NAME O!
It's times like this that I wish Peter would just sell his interest in the TMNT to someone who gives a f***....

Neca is pissed off because of the fact that they worked really hard to get this line going, they wanted to sell their figures at retail stores and Playmates would not allow for it and threw a temper tantrum.
Playmates has now taken Neca's idea of comic based toys and shoved it in their face saying oh you did so well we're running with your idea now and going to sell them at retail, so Fck you you small @ss company.
Understand? I think I'm be pretty pissed off if I was them also.
do I think NECA are acting like babies? Yes I do but still Playmates are acting like creeps and Peter and Gary don't help matters at all.

It is a bit sad but, it's cool they come with the comic, that is a good marketing idea, one they should have copied off of the marvel legends figures ages ago!
But these days Playmates and Mirage are not leaders they are followers of trends.
Has just the right amount of retro feel to them. However, with the movie tooling and with no variety of colors (I can not bring myself to buy 4 of the same figure without them being different colors), I doubt I'll get these.
They're movie figure size yes.
It effects the fans more than anyone when companies act like idiots.
They're just movie turtles with different paint pretty much.
You know I have to wonder if they will do variants of them with their colors and the all red versions.
I don't know I will admit it's pretty risky for them to do the all Red series in a retail situation, but hey NECA soul gang busters at comic shops across America so why shouldn't playmates cash in on someone else's ideas!
But I still don't think that claming up like they have and stonewalling Mirage is the correct, or mature response.
I agree 100% with you, it's rather annoying and bad business on them.
Murph has tried a tun of times to get in contact with them, neither he or Peter have heard a word from them since the San Diego Comicon.
Isn't NECA starting a Street Fighter line? More irony.
Yes, and they look like crap what a waste of time and money.
they need to stop being babies about this and get back to getting the best TMNT figures ever out again.
It's also no surprise to me that Playmates decided to go a similar route, since the moment the NECA figures came about everyone on the Earth said "Why couldn't Playmates do stuff like that?", so why get upset when they do?
Playmates can't because they just reuse old toys over and over, take a seriously close look at these things.
If they continue with this line and at a faster pace and better quality than NECA did then yes I'll be buying their products.
If NECA chooses not to make anymore figures that's NECA's fault, not Playmates. It'd be a pretty stupid move on NECA's part as well. But you can't fault Playmates for trying to make a buck and for trying to celebrate the 25th of TMNT.
It is and it isn't, NECA are being huge babies about this and really need to be in constant contact with Mirage or hell even the fans asking what they'd like to see out of the line but they aren't.
Infact according to Murph from the start they've been sketchy with info and not very good with contacting them about things first before they sculpt.
Nope you can't but, I'd much rather of seen some old toon based figures instead of more Mirage based stuff as NECA was already working on that.
People know the old toon more than the comics and I do believe those would have sold better, but hey what do I know.
*Sigh*
It is always such a joy whenever you decide to grace us with your presence Newton. I mean that. I really do. You always bring out the best in people.
Agreed with that, there's quite a few members who come every once and awhile and just bring out the best in the forums.
Neca just needs to shed some light on this situation.
Crap or get off the pot!
Exactly, and they're not but just you wait till Feb at Comicon we fans who are going and Mirage is gonna be on them like white on rice!
I cry, because it's true. :tcry:
But hopefully they all have the same comic, so I only have to buy one.
They more than likely will, it'd be to much to ask for each one to come with their micro issue.

Hey, I'm back...Oh my god, what happened to my thread!?!

Ok, here are Jester's 2 cents:

1. I still wonder if Playmates took legal action against NECA to get them to stop making their figures. If that's the case, maybe NECA isn't just being snooty but really has no need to talk with Mirage because Playmates killed the series....but then again if that was the case Murph would know, right?

2. These Playmates comic figures are, at second glance, a total joke. They are basically retooled movie figures with, what, 2 more POA?
I was discussing this with my mom, who was totally humoring me....:P I told her about my NECA figures, how great they were, and she asked about the all red bandanas and I explained it was the comic style, that Playmates sold toys for kids and not comic fans, and so they were multicolored. I asked if she'd have bought me 4 turtles as a kid if they all wore red, and she said she probably wouldn't have. Makes me wonder who Playmates is marketing these to.
The NECA figures were for TMNT hard cores and comic fans in general, people who were willing to spend $14 each on 4 Turtles with the only difference being the weapons and the scowl on their face. The 32 POA don't hurt either. (It is 32, right?) :P Playmates sold their Turtle wares to the new Turtle fans, and also us hard cores who do like quality, but still even give crappy figures a second look when we see the TMNT logo...admit it...you do it.
The way I see it, Playmates needs to realize their market and stick with it and let NECA do their thing...or try to work something out. If NECA's just suffering from a bruised ego, they need to get over it and make some dang toys, because you can't run a business if you don't produce a product.

It's the 25th anniversary of the TMNT, damn it! Stop this petty squabbling and do some freakin' fan service. Who knows? There may actually be some $$MONEY$$ in it for you. (I highlight it because it seems that's all some people care about.)

I don't get you toy people.

NECA delays/cancels their releases because Playmates makes similar figures, and everyone blames Playmates?

Playmates begins a larger line of decent, Lawson-esque, Mirage figures, which will be on toy shelves for everyone to see (hooray Mirage exposure) and people blame Playmates?

People complain about Playmates' lack of initiative during the anniversary, and when they decide to do something new people still complain?

People complain about Playmates making low quality figures and when they decide to make better looking comic-based figures, people complain even more?

Damn. These aren't NECA quality, but from what my non-collector vision can tell they're better than recent Playmates entries. And they're advertising Mirage Turtles to a more mainstream crowd. Don't scew this up, guys.

Neca is pissed off because of the fact that they worked really hard to get this line going, they wanted to sell their figures at retail stores and Playmates would not allow for it and threw a temper tantrum.

Not to be unexpected, NECA didn't really believe Playmates would be happy with another toy company producing TMNT toys and selling them on the same retail shelf did they?

Playmates has now taken Neca's idea of comic based toys and shoved it in their face saying oh you did so well we're running with your idea now and going to sell them at retail, so Fck you you small @ss company.

If the NECA line was indeed successful, I don't see why Playmates shouldn't be able to produce comic book inspired TMNT toys for their own line, especially if the cartoon series will be ending after this season and with the 25th anniversary looming.

I don't buy figures. Ever. Except when the NECA TMNT came out. I liked them so much that me, a guy who never buys figures of anything ever got them. Now, I can't get my NECA stuff because of Playmates?

They took the only series of figures I will probably collect in the far foreseeable future and made them go MIA.

No thanks. F&*^ them.

If I were someone who normally gets figures and stuff, I would be excited about this. However, the one series that I decide to collect is delayed or canceled over Playmates.

Just note from the beginning that I don't normally collect figures. So me telling Playmates to get f*$#'d wont affect them at all. I haven't bought anything from them in years. They're losing nothing over me. I'm just ranting.

Now, as I was going to edit into my post: If this isn't some legal mishap and NECA is just giving Mirage the silent treatment out of jealousy or something, NECA can get f&*%'d, also. I would've bought their stuff and they're not delivering.

At this rate, I'm not gonna get back into collecting figures anytime soon.

They may look kind of nice, but they're made using the same damn lazy shortcut Playmates has been using for years; the same freakin' body sculpts (in this case, the movie sculpts) with something new slapped on, in this case, heads and a coat of paint.

Wes

Do they use the movie sculpts? Oh no! I'd thought they looked different -- and uber cool -- but if they're the movie sculpts I'll probably pass on them. I picked up four of the movie figures just because, but that scale is way too huge for me to get any more.

Looking forward to seeing what they do with Shredder. The NECA one looks cool, but even if it does come out I seriously doubt I'll ever find it at retail! I wanted a NECA Donatello, but I only came across him once and had to pass on him that day. :/ Playmates figures tend to be much more readily available (though that might change with several retailers dropping the line).

Truly, I hope that Playmates makes a gajillion dollars off those things simply to help further the cause of establishing the comic Turtles and their continuity being the rule and not the exception amongst the younger crowd in the same way that the new cartoon started that movement by being more accurate to the original comic. As most people around my age (25) see it, the old cartoon Turtles are the only Turtles and there's nothing more to say about it.

Personally, though, I'm just not cut out to collect TMNT figures if this is the kind of industry drama that comes with them. If that's how it's going to be, I can just take the money I would've used to buy the NECA figures and focus on really awesome overpriced Dragonball figures (http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4649) instead.

As it stands we don't really know who to blame, obviously people are seeing the same thing differently. But if you take into account Vaughn's post, which is what set me off, then Playmates does have a big hand in this.

Playmates begins a larger line of decent, Lawson-esque, Mirage figures, which will be on toy shelves for everyone to see (hooray Mirage exposure) and people blame Playmates?Lawson-esque? Are you on crack?! Seriously though Lawson would be more angular. This is definitely Laird/Dooney combo. Which is only odd because they said they based it on the first issue's artwork.

People complain about Playmates' lack of initiative during the anniversary, and when they decide to do something new people still complain?
No, I love that they want to do stuff. Just do it right.

People complain about Playmates making low quality figures and when they decide to make better looking comic-based figures, people complain even more?
I'd rather them make low quality figures like before and neca make the comic figures. Not them make comic figures and neca not making anything.

These are ok, but from my collector vision they obviously use the TMNT movie buck. Advertising the original comics is AWESOME though. I love that they're packing in comics but it'd be far cooler if they were vol 4 or tales comics and not every figure come with a comic that they don't even look like they're from

Side point: Someone said these look exactly like the TMNT movie figures or reuse parts. That's a half truth. These look to have completely all new sculpting, but they're using the movie toy buck. I'll explain what I mean with an example, the 80's GI Joe 3 3/4" line all used one buck, which is why they're all very much the same in terms of articulation and size. But the sculpting on that buck was different for each figure which made them obviously different. The TMNT here have the same lousy hip joints, and have the same proportions because of this. Before anyone yells at my for unnecessary playmates bashing, I accepted and loved the movie toys when they first came out even though they looked like lizards and were way too tall or whatever other negatives people said about them. Unfortunately, they've just dry humped that mold into oblivion. There's probably chaffing now, CHAFFING!

Also don't be too surprised if Splinter is exactly like movie Splinter, Shredder has different sculpting but same articulation/size as movie shredder, foot have same skinny proportions, etc... Not saying this will happen for sure, but it really seems like Playmates is doing as little work as possible with everything. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised though.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, these figures look to have the same tooling as the movie figures. By tooling, I mean the same range of movement. They maybe share some parts (The upper arms, shoulders and the neck look the closest). However, everything looks resculpted at least. Think of it like this: You know how some toys use the same designs but have different articulation? Well, flip that. They look different on top, but build and working inside are the same.

Whether or not it's the final version, they still put it in print in a magazine. I mean, Music Don with no pants was down right hilarious, but this no pants Shredder is epic in comparison. Of course, No Pants Music Don was clearly a first shot, while No Pants Shredder looks to be an attempt at resembling the final product.

Actually GI Joe didn't use the same buck, that's way off base.

A better comparison would be DCUC which has a handful of buck bases they use.

No one knows what exactly these figures will look like, because we only have one small prototype pic. And much like the pantless Shredder probably doesn't represent the final product. But you guys would much rather jump the gun and complain about Playmates than get the actual facts.

And I love you Cipher. I dunno how anyone can honestly say Playmates promoting the 25th anniversary of TMNT with two seperate lines (and advertising those lines as well) is a bad thing for TMNT. Getting the toys back on shelves is one of the reasons TMNT had a revival at all and you can thank Playmates for that.

I actually think with the new line and the vintage line, there is a great chance for TMNT to get yet another revival out of this. Much like He-Man is doing now and the GI Joe 25th.

The GI Joe 25th toys were supposed to be 25 special edition toys... The sales were so good it led to the creation of a new line, which is currently one of the top sellers in boys toys. It's not out of the realm of possibility for it to happen with the TMNT. And no matter how good the NECA figures were, they would have never had the exposure or the ability to bring new fans into the fold. Playmates figures will.

I have to say I agree with Cipher here... Playmates being Playmates aside, it really is a lot of fault on Mirage. NECA had the chance to release more figures, but kept strategically waiting over and over. And I haven't been following their lines, but it seems they've been doing mostly one shots, anyway... other than the Nightmare Before Christmas line, and that came out annually. All I want to know is did Playmates originally intend on making these toys before Mirage went to NECA....

I will say this, movie body reusing aside, these look pretty good for what they are. And they could have just as easilly not gone with the red bandannas cuz it would be "too confusing." While not great, they definitely look collectible enough so far. Things could easily change, and they could get better or worse later on down the line.

I don't know what topic you're reading, but all three companies are being given crap from us here. Playmates for shmoozing in on NECA's turf, Mirage for letting them get away with whatever the hell they want, and NECA for throwing a fit and not releasing what they already should have due to the above, and maintaining radio silence with Mirage.

But I'm ecstatic that red-masked Turtles will finally be on toystore shelves for children and parents to see, because a few years back that kind of exposure would've been a pipe-dream.

That sounds fair, more or less.

A inconsistency is if NECA did so well with the original turtles that playmates copied them it makes sense they're angry but it makes no sense that they'd stop a line that was making them money regardless, they ARE a business, not a HS love triangle. I actually always hated NECA until the Turtles, most everything else they release have horrible paintjobs or they quit after one or two lines.

The hate should definitely go to both parties not just playmates but that doesn't go well with the anti-Peter/playmates hate that is popular around here. I don't think they look like the movie figures, if anything they remind me of a mix of the 2k3 figures more.

Also I hope and its likely that playmates will release color bandana variants of them, which is what I want. The turtles will always be the different color bandanas and I'll never like the "only red" turtles, even if they are the "originals". And there is nothing wrong with that.

Someone asked PL about Neca toys and PL recently posted this on his blog:

Q- "Speaking of toys, any news on the NECA TMNT second wave?"

PL - The last time I checked, about three weeks ago, with the appropriate Mirage staffers, NECA was -- for whatever reasons -- incommunicado. I have heard nothing else since. I don't know what's going on with them. Like many fans, I really want to see them do more figures, and hope this does not bode ill. -- PL

Leave it to a group of people who should be too old to worry about toys to complain about a line of figures meant for children...

A few pictures and some vague information from VaughnMichael (from his -insider- source), and all you people lost your ****. I really am curious what you're all gonna do when they post the obit for Laird.

You guys wanted **** for the 25th Anniversary...Regardless of this 'Too little, too late" nonsense, its something.

I'm as guilty as anyone here of collecting toys/figures, but I know where to draw the line in finding fault in a company whose main goal is to make toys for 7-12 year olds...Not 18-40 year olds. Especially when I expect them to **** up on a regular basis. No one should be surprised, and no one should be letting this effect them for 7 ****ing pages.

If this had your panties in a twist, maybe you should take that as a hint that maybe its time to leave the Turtle toys behind, or more specifically, new turtle toys.

Excuse me, Princess! I think I have the right to show my dissatisfaction for the NECA/Playmates drama that's keeping me from collecting more of the NECA TMNT line; the only figure line I've cared about since the early '90s when I was in that 7-12 age range!

yeah. i agree with you because playmates isnt looking for our approval, their looking for the kids approval. because, playmates as you know, makes these toys for kids. they dont care if they take toys that were already made and repaint them, they just want money. those toys are pretty whack, ill admit, but dont make a big deal about it. its playmates. you should have seen it coming. i know i did.

First of all your supposed to be a kid so they are making those toys for you.
Most people in this thread are seeming to miss the point of why this sucks.
It's not just Playmates fault, but yes they are a part of why the NECA sh1t isn't working out but NECA are being children and ignoring Mirage as I've been saying for awhile now and you guy can all believe it now since Peter confirmed it.
And you'll see that everything else I've been saying will be confirmed as well just give it time.
Mirage needs to put more care and pride in the things they do, be it for kids or adults then things like this NECA fiasco would not be happening.

Actually GI Joe didn't use the same buck, that's way off base.

Well where are those facts you always claim others don't have to back up your statement there?

Everyone knows what these will look like because Playmates put up a promotional shot. Dude where do you get off saying we don't get the facts? You say we don't have facts without backing any up yourself even though we're going off of a official playmates shot posted on toynewsi.

TMNT has more going for it right now than MOTU so that's an awful comparison. MOTU is online only, through one website not even through other e-tailers, even NECA has more distribution than that. With no comic (canceled) cartoon (canceled) or movie (canceled) in the works.

But I'll give you the Joe 25th toys. If that happens for TMNT that would be awesome, but somehow I doubt it. GI Joe has always had more collectors/kid support even when there aren't cartoons or media to back them up. Joe has been around since the 1960's in some form. They regularly have conventions for collectors and they have an upcoming live action movie. It would be awesome if TMNT could reach that success again, but I doubt one comic influenced line is going to do it.

I haven't been on in the last couple days so scanning through the last few pages of this forum has been making my head spin, but I gotta say I'm on board with the release of these new figures. A re-release of the figures that have already been re-released might be too much for me but they gotta be making more than just the four turtles with these new figures, right?

Maybe I'm just easily excited due to the fact that I haven't bought a modern TMNT Playmates figure in a year, but I do think this is a step in the right direction. (For my taste atleast)

Gotta say I'm in agreement here -- if the figure ends up looking like Cyber Shredder I'll have to buy at least one extra for a pink repaint. :D

Anyway, I still think these figures look cool! Though honestly I wouldn't have minded if they'd rereleased the Fightin' Gear figures with the heads from the first 2K3 wave, new arms with bicep cuts and elbows (and maybe non-articulated hands), and black washes. Throw in thigh cuts for additional love.

And I'm in agreement with comments that they should be rereleasing Krang with his android body instead of just the tiny version! Though personally I'd love to see Playmates take advantage of the anime invasion with some other rereleases. Supermutants and Cyber Samurai, anyone? ;)

No, they had no intentions of ever making comic based figures until they saw how well NECA did.

That's all I wanted to know. It almost seems like NECA was a bargaining chip or something. Almost. And in a conspiracy theory way.

Sadly, I have to agree with that to some extent. I mean, the line just so happens to be in the hands of a kid's toy company that still doesn't know what it wants to do... it's actually hard to complain anymore since they lowered the bar so low, you don't expect anything from them but things to get worse. I have to admit, they sorta kinda got the message maybe... and while they are screwing NECA out of this (Mirage's fault, again... that's the one that invited 2 dates to the prom), at least they found the initiative to do what they could have easily done on their own, but didn't wanna.

Plus, again, they could have released series a month or two before this development even popped up.

But I have to agree with what someone said on another thread.... while it doesn't seem like much, we are getting quite a bit for the 25th anniversary... (and to bring back that poster's point) the only 80th anniversary Mickey Mouse stuff I've seen are a Pez collection tin (even the American Chopper guys got one first), a woman's long sleeve T-shirt and a collection of plushes that went strait to clearance, the latter of the 2 being Disney Store exclusives... and that's provided you can even find a Disney store anymore.

Chris

Personally I'm not sure what all the fuss is about from either company!

Playmates had no plans for comic based figures and Mirage was well within their rights to grant specialty market rights to another company.

NECA knew going in Playmates had the main toy licence and could decide at any time to make comic based figures even if they didn't have any plans at the time.

The truth is if NECA had got their figures out on time we would now have April, Shredder, Foot and Elite Foot in our hands and the only comic figure coming from Playmates that they hadn't done would be Splinter. And if people had 8 NECA figures and knew Splinter, Casey were coming in wave 3 they would likely ignore the Playmates offerings.

Because of NECA's own delays and lack of communication we only have the 4 TMNT and no idea if wave 2 is coming or not and no idea of anything past that. So Playmates offering Shredder, Splinter and Foot Soldier is tempting to those who collect the NECA comic figures and would otherwise have ignored the Playmates line.

But at the end of the day NECA makes figures for the specialty market, Playmates makes figures for the mass market. Even if TMNT fans do buy the Playmates comic figures, the quality of the NECA line means most (if not all) would rebuy the the same characters if NECA did a figure.

That said, NECA doesn't seem to stick to licences very long - even something as big as Pirates of the Caribbean didn't get more than 2-3 waves per film. I think we're lucky to have got even the 4 TMNT. I want NECA wave 2 (whenever it comes out) and I'm hoping for at least 1 more wave with Splinter and Casey, but after that I'm really not holding my breath. Especially given the current communications/Playmates issue.

NECA's line will always be the highest in terms of quality, but I think we could (fingers crossed) see more characters in the Playmates line if they should continue past these first 7 figures.

Maybe Playmates could make this their "Ultimate TMNT" line? Give us good figures of the comic characters then maybe start adding original toon, archie and new toon characters to the mix as well in one big line! Ok, I know that's just wishful thinking but it's what I'd like to see happen.

That game looks cool glad to see some screens for it looks like we will finally get a good TMNT game. I'm glad Ubi didn't develop this in house and have some good guys working on it.

I have to say I am happy about these turtles coming, they are better than anything Playmates has done since they launched the 2k3 line. I still probably prefer the 2k3 versions but these a pretty cool. I like Raphs head sculpt hopefully they are W.I.P and will look even better once released.

The new guy on the forum here

I am wondering about these mirage playmates toys comic pack ins. Is every one of one them going to come with the same number 1 story? I'd like to get them all, but I'd like to see them mix it up a bit so you can get a few different comics. Its such a killer idea to pack in some old reprints.

I can try to find out for everyone, but please if me telling anyone destroys their lives let me know now or forever hold your peace.
and yes it is a grand idea, I liked it very much when they did it with Marvel Legends.
I can't lie though I think them doing a build a figure pack-in is an even better idea.

Going on the theme of Mirage characters, who do you think would be the best build-a-figure choice? Shark Shredder? Fugitoid's transformation? A Triceraton that's accurate in scale to the other figures?

build a figure would be great. I don't expect it tho. build a figure fugitiod would be really easy since the 2k3 one looks like the mirage comic. Easy for playmates to reuse with small changes.

I read they're doing a trade paper back comic with 1-11 and the micros so I don't know what they would pack in for comics if they were going to come out with more than one reprint comic. They may not want to try to print them to give away in toys and print to sell as a book. I don't know though. they give them away free on the website to read so they could print to give away I guess. all the art is already done.

anyway whatever they do, I am excited about these.

they looked like retooled 2k3 toyline bodies, legs, arms, with maybe new joints and new heads.
Oh...and TAILS.

Triceraton, Baxterbot, Fugitoid forum #2, the Theiving Idol God from tales, Leatherhead.
I could go on and on...

Ooh yeah, I'm not thinking clearly today. Those are some good ones. As much as I love Triceratons and Leatherhead, I think the Thieving God Idol is my pick of the litter.

Okay, totally confused here.... did they and when did they officially announce they would come with Comic pack ins? I do agree that a build a figure would be cool, but then you'd have to get all the figures, even ones you didn't care to get, and if you miss one , you have to track it down and pay some scalper or something, or go with a giant headless chunk of plastic.

I'm not really impressed by their looks when NECA have done the comic TMNT
looks like they re use the tmnt 2007 torso and the heads for 2k3, only good thing is that they have red bandannas and will be the third figure release with tails from playmates.
But I'm sure gonna snag me some 88 re-sculpts

Y'know, I may figure into this percentage, but I'm pretty sure 99% of those who make fun of 4chan has never even been there, but instead only goes by what they've heard and read. If it really is such a cesspool, people with an IQ of over 3 should not even approach the moat let alone cross the drawbridge, right? So what's the point of constantly bringing it up? Lord... the world makes no sense, and the internet even less...

Yes, I know it's off-topic and pretty much obvious, but really...

I know that a lot of people are saying that these new figures look like the movie Turtles figures, but I just don't see it.

Comic Turtles: http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&album=Playmates%2F25th_Anniversary_TMNT&pic=25th_Turtles.jpg&dispsize=600&start=0

Movie Raph: http://www.mwctoys.com/REVIEW_122206a.htm

I know Raph's sai were brought up as maybe being the same, but they look different to me. The comic Turtles are definitely more muscular. The plastron and shell are shaped differently than the movie figures. Obviously the head is different. They're using different colors of paint.

The only thing that I see as being the same is that the joints and stuff are constructed the same way as the movie figures... which isn't really worth calling "copycat" on this one. Seems that most of the Turtles figures that come out around the same time have a similar range of movement.

I mean, sure there can be plenty of other problems and reasons as to why you wouldn't want 'em, but calling 'em "movie Turtles with different heads" just seems to be a bit of an exaggeration that they have the same range of movement.

These would have looked better in the Cyber Gear than the movie TMNT.

I think I'll reserve further judgement of the figures for when more pictures surface.

I agree 100%. I never understood why people thought they were the movie figures. Sure they're similar construction but look at the details and they're completely different. When people were dogging on them for being copies I was scratching my head wondering what they were talking about. Come on people, eye for detail!

it still looks like tmnt 07 torso. the plastron on the 07 figures are a different part can can be replaced.

its not a bad thing reusing model parts and tweak them if the result looks good but I don't like the 07 turtles figures torso, the neck is so weird looking. But the body could be more fitting the new figures.

the nice part is that they don't try to do the same turtles NECA did, these guys have a newer comic style.

in overall they are okay figures but nothing special. But then again we have only seen one picture of them.

Now, unless it's just the angle of the figures, or I accidentally stretched the picture trying to make them look roughly in scale, or there's some sort of small optical illusion in the shape of the plastron... I'd say the Movie line figures are taller and thinner in their torsos.

Plus (again, this may just be angles of the camera) but there looks to be a little more detail in the necks than the movie line. Looking at them side by side, they may have used one or two bits here and there, but they actually look much different. I actually want these, myself.

the nice part is that they don't try to do the same turtles NECA did, these guys have a newer comic style.

I agree... I don't see it as a bad thing, because NECA wanted something closer to their first appearance... this looks more like their over all general comic book appearance through the years combined together.

The torsos look different to me after looking closely based on the links I posted in my last post in this thread. It's not a big deal, though. I'm not even buying these. I was just making an observation that these aren't just slightly modified movie figures.

I KNOW WHY NECA ISNT RELEASING WAVE 2!!! ok, so neca had this big thing with wave 2 and april and etc but they said fall 2008. so they havent said anything about that and its january. then in december, we find out that neca are realeasing comic figures, but still have no clue what happened to neca. mabye playmates told them to back off and they did, so ten playmates can sell out their toys and nobody will trust neca anymore and wont buy their toys because they took so long. basiclly, playmates is trying to get back up by first getting back at the amazing sales of the neca tmnt.

Y'know, taking a look at these figures again, they appear to be just right for a batch of customs that I was going to have to do some heavy tooling on other TMNT figures to get to look good enough. With these, I'd have less work to do. I'd still rather have NECA Wave 2, as I also already had customs planned for those (plus they're just so damned spiffy looking!) - or better yet, both lines.
