View Full Version : Least Loved TMNT Episodes!

So, I'm watching season 3 of the OT and as the 25th anniversary is coming up and I do do a lame video series, and this is a TMNT fan forum I figured I'd post this thread.

What is your least favorite episode of the original TMNT series? I ask because part of me wants to, as part of the 25th anniversary and an MCubed special do episode commentaries on some of them.

So, what episodes make even you Turtle fans roll your eyes?

I'm just gonna go down the list on the official site and put which ones I remember being horrid

Green With Jealousy - Just a really stupid plot. This entire DVD set I remember had some bad ones on it but this ones almost unwatchable for me.

Mutagen Monster - Even as a kid I hated this episode. I don't understand why I just did. Maybe it was all the lame cow jokes and stuffy nose Don was in the episode instead the one we normally have. That was a huge issue with all these episodes on that set.

The Gang's All Here - A really stupid pointless waste of an episode. Everything about it is bad.

Mr. Ogg Goes to Town - He's insanely annoying that's all I can say.

Michaelangelo Toys Around - The turtles can beat the crap out of Shredder but some nerdy toymaker and his robot dinosaurs are hard for them to beat and it takes an army of toys to do it...

Name That Toon - If I need to tell you why this ones bad you've never seen it.

Menace, Maestro Please - See above

Back to the Egg - Any baby turtle episode is unwatchably bad.

Funny, They Shrunk Michaelangelo - Mikey really got the screw job on this season. This episode is pretty insanely stupid.

Poor Little Rich Turtle - Annoying as hell whiny support character.

Super Irma - Irma, her own episode...yeah bad idea.

Adventures in Turtle-Sitting - This is possibly even worse then the first baby turtles episode as there's 3 of them this time.

Polly Wanna Pizza - Super retarded episode. Mikey renting pets? It just didn't make any sense. The bird was annoying too.

Other then that pretty much every European vacation episode and that's it. I liked everything else in the series after those.

I second Mr. Ogg goes to town. And some of the European Vacation ones. And some in the final two seasons.

When I first saw the title, I was going to say that some of the ones in season 4 of the NT were insufferable.

I'm in the middle of season 4 right now and most of the "villian of the week" episodes are pretty lame. Also:

Attack of the Big Macc
The Turtle Terminator
Michelangelo Toys Around
Funny, They Shrunk Michelangelo
Leonardo Lightens Up
Donatello Makes Time
Turtles of the Jungle
Rondo In New York
Turtlemaniac
Name That Toon
Menace Maestro Please
Superhero For a Day

I actually have to second all the ones Spitfire said too if I didn't mention them already...(besides Green with Jealousy)
And the lamest of the list has to be Michelangelo Toys Around...nearly unwatchable..

I actually liked the Ogg episode.

Super Irma - Irma, her own episode...yeah bad idea.

Irma in her own episode is always a great idea.

Adventures in Turtle-Sitting - This is possibly even worse then the first baby turtles episode as there's 3 of them this time.

It's probably the best episode out of all of those "Turtles as Babies" storylines. At least this time you get April faced with some semblence of motherhood and Krang thinking more about eliminating his competition

I actually liked the Ogg episode.

Yeah, I can see how it gets so much hate and all... but I enjoyed it... Not loved it or even really liked it... enjoyed it. Basically it was just a knockoff of that Superman villain, and there was no call to make him an ultra annoying Pee Wee Herman parody... but I liked some of the concepts.

But I second Mutagen monster... When Vernon has the best scene in the episode, you know something is wrong.

I also really disliked Rebel without a Fin. This is all Ray Fillet gets in the series? An episode where the turtles spend a good quarter of the episode making "We can't pronounce the villain's name" jokes?

And that Zach and the Alien Invaders episode was trash too. Wingnut and Screwloose as alien Army men? I mean, really?

I'm on season four of the 80's toon ninja turtles and i have to say though I enjoy most of season four there seems to be a greater number of groaners in this season.

I just about hate most of the episodes on the first two dvds of the season four boxset. The animation seems extremely cheap and lousy (which actually affects how I like an episode believe it or not) and the plots just seem over all bad. I almost gave up on the watching 80's toon because of the first two dvds in season four. :dead: But I was pleased to see that the animation and episodes get better throughout afterwards.

I didn't like the episode with the guy who wanted to make wax sculptures of the turtles. Or the episode where Don becomes big to fight a king Kong knock off. Or the one where Mikey pretends to be a toy.

The Fifth Turtle
Poor Little Rich Turtle
Raphael Knocks 'em Dead
Zach and the Alien Invaders
Menace, Maestro Please

I always hated Rebel Without A Fin. I think that's easily my least favourite episode from the entire series.

Other than that, there are a few that I'm not a huge fan of. I plan on rewatching all of the DVDs before Season 7 comes out.

I'm watching Turtle Terminator right now....gah I hate episodes with one replacement VA, but this has 2...and one of them is Rob Paulsen, my fave TMNT VA...yet they reuse his "Banzai!" yell.

Then of course there is Lesatherhead's debut episode with alternate Shredder and Donnie.

And one I find hilarious, Blast from the Past, a rehash of the pilot, has alternate Krang, for like 2 lines...and Fraley's Krang in the recycled clips. :P

EDIT: And Spit, I totally agree with Mutagen Monster, I've always disliked that episode, mainly again because of Alternate/Bizarro Donnie.

Watching The Gang's All Here, why didn't they Turtles feed an Anti-Mutagen cookie to Splinter to turn him back to Hamato Yoshi? And since when did being a Turtle become the contributing factor to the TMNT being Ninjas? I thought it was the training from Splinter. If it's not, then why do they even need to train or have a sensi. And what "powers" do they have?

EDIT: Oh, right the cookies exploded, but they only found that out after Mikey ate one.

That always bugged me about that episode too. Becoming humans makes them lose their fighting skills? Is there no such thing as a skilled ninja human? Maybe without their big shells they're just mega off-balance?

Good question about Shredderville..never really thought about that before...maybe the same events happened, but the boy with the Turtles never tripped? The real question is, why did Shredder try to kill Yoshi with mutagen anyway?

And maybe that's the answer...the turtles never mutated because the mutagen worked...and killed them and Yoshi...wow, that's way to dark for the OT.

Most of the episodes after the Technodrome leaves the center of the Earth (when TMNT moved from FOX to CBS).

And of the older ones, "The Gang's All Here", for the reasons the others have elaborated on.. And the Mister Ogg one. And others I haven't recalled yet.

I really don't care for April's Fool. Is it just me or does the worst plots for the show always seem to have the cheapest animation as well?

I also don't care for Raphael nocks 'em dead, the animation was good but the jokes made my eyes water they were so bad. I would think that an episode starring Baxter's brother would be better than that. :ohwell:

Ok, so I'm watching Were-Rats from Channel 6 and you all know how I love mistakes in the OT, and here's a doozie:

So Leo, Mikey, Raph, and Splinter go to the airport to stop Vernon, Irma, and the Rat King from stealing the cheese while Donnie gets the Turtle Blimp. At the air port Donnie reappears, sometimes with just 2 other turtles, and occasionally all 3. In fact the doozie is that all 4 Turtles, Vernon and Irma fall out of the plane, only to be saved by, you guessed it, Donatello in the Turtle Blimp....WHAT!?

Hey, if Donatello can make one out of spare parts in an evening and still later had the access to the workshop to finish and paint a blimp in an afternoon, there's no reasn why there can't be two vans.

Back to the Egg - Any baby turtle episode is unwatchably bad.

I agree with the fact the baby turtles were beyond annoying, and the dialogue was real bad at some points ("Wouldn't you rather watch the Turtle that Ate Pizza?")... but the entire idea of Krang forcing Shredder to work with a partner- especially since Shredder's ego and jealousy ruined a perfectly good chance to really destroy the turtles- was the bright point of the episode.

I remember liking Back to the Egg as a kid. I wonder if I'll like it as an adult, too.

I have a hard time coming up with "bad episodes". Maybe it's because I have a hard time remembering a lot of them, or maybe it's because I tend to accept all of them as being cheesy fun. If I rewatch season three I'm probably bound to come up with a couple.

I know as a kid there was an episode with Raphael and some mobsters that I didn't like very much.

this episode irritates me to no end, why the hell would the turtles have special powers by being huge talking turtles? It shouldn't have had any bearing on the turtles physical abilites at all. Not only that the excution of the episode sucked. Mike turning into a human was such a plot device, and a poor one at that. Plus human Mike looked like such a geek.

"Leonardo, Renaissance Turtle" is probably the most unwatchable episode I can remember at the moment.

And overall, Season Four had alot of duds in it. Though I'd like to pre-emptively defend "Leonardo Lightens Up" because its freaking hilarious.

I also don't understand the hate for "Rebel Without a Fin." Yes, they altered Man Ray's character, and yes it was filled with groan-inducing puns, but I've always loved the episodes with mutant villains, and the action was decent.

I actually really liked this episode. It had leo trying to defeat the bad guy all by himself and useing his own smarts. Alot of the time in the OT it was Donatello that came to the rescue and was the resouceful guy, putting Leo (the supposed leader) in the shadows. Plus this episode had the added bonus of having Rex-1 in it. And I've always liked him, and his cute crush on April. :)

Though I really hated the episode where every one acts like children and monkeys. I also didn't like the episode where Irma get blown up into a giant. Yikes! And perhaps most of season five. :ohwell:

Eh, some episodes were bad, but as long as Raphael had something smart to say and made me laugh, then it was worth it. I never really enjoyed though how they made the plot come together like in the premiere episode of Leatherhead, the turtles visit the frogs in Florida, then we see Krang and Shredder talking in the Technodrome saying we have to destroy these turtles. Suddenly, Krang: "So this is what the Florida swamp looks like, wait what's this?! The Turtles!!!" But as unbelievable as these weird coincidences were, they had to come up with something! Oh yeah, Mr. Ogg Goes To Town was pretty disappointing.

Here is my list:

New York's Shiniest
Didn´t like Rex-1 at all and April is pretty stupid by trying to reveal what is police secret weapon.

Mutagen Monster
Just didn´t like it, I guess one of the main reasons is that they spent too much time in the rail road area.

Turtles of the Jungle
King Kong Donatello and lots of other stupid scenes.

Michaelangelo Toys Around
Awful, horrible episode.

The Gang's All Here
Very stupid idea turning turtle into a human and being human means losing ninja skills?

Name That Toon and Menace, Maestro Please
Any episode with Howie is awful but latter was bearable.

Donatello Makes Time
Very lame and possibly worst evil scientist villain

Poor Little Rich Turtle
I hated that little whiny brat.

Unidentified Flying Leonardo
Really bad episode but villain and his plan was so ridicilous it saved this episode a bit.

I havent seen many episodes beyond episode 111 but I´m working on to watch every episode. Also I have to defend two episodes listed in this thread. Rebel Without a Fin was good episode, Ray was really funny villain, or more of a anti-villain, he just did bad things he had nothing better to do. Leonardo Lightens Up personality modificator was stupid gadget but funny episode. This episode is almost like Take me to your leader but this is good too. It was funny to see Leonardo taking it easy and not caring about stuff.

YES! That is EXACTLY what I thought, too! Even Splinter took notice of the cookies, but said absolutely nothing! Wasn't one of the OT's biggest plot points to return Splinter into his human form?

So, ya... "The Gang's All Here" easily takes it for me. And I found it amusing how many others here seem to share my disdain for the episode.

I'll admit that some time ago, I was trying to prove a point about something in a humorous way in a different thread, but got caught up in mostly bashing this episode because of how little sense it makes:

But, if we use the natural laws of nature found within the universe of the old toon, this sort of thing is definitely possible. Even though the mutations from the old toon claim to be scientific, it's quite obvious that they're actually magical. Take the episode "The Gang's All Here", for example. In that episode, Michelangelo eats cookies that Shredder made that cause him to turn human (as well as lose his "turtle powers"... which I never understood, because I always assumed they got their skills from Ninjutsu and not from being turtles). Now, to make sure he doesn't end up naked, he put on a Hawaiian shirt and some shorts. That seems logical, but... then there's things that make no sense at all.

See, here's the thing. The mutation is unstable, so Mikey keeps going back and forth between turtle and human. The problem is that he's barefoot as a turtle, but magically gains shoes as a human. Even more confusing is that as a human, he doesn't have his orange mask, wristbands, elbow pads, and knee pads. They magically disappear... but then magically reappear when he mutates back into a turtle.

Therefor, the explanation for the illogical mutations of these old figures is simple. The old toon mutations were actually magical transformations disguised as scientific transformations.

It's probably the best episode out of all of those "Turtles as Babies" storylines. At least this time you get April faced with some semblence of motherhood and Krang thinking more about eliminating his competition

That was the lamest thing about it though. WHAT competition??? Shredder and Krang have always had their schemes and evil plans which never had the mob interfere in any way, and now suddenly Krang wants to get rid of the 'competition'? Shouldn't he defeat the Turtles first? Getting rid of the mob will no nothing to stop the Turtles or get the Technodrome back to the surface. Another thing was also the fact that there was no antidote but then in the last few minutes of the show ending it's revealed plain old water is the cure. I call shenanigans. In most cartoons a blast of some kind is usually reversed by a blast of another kind. Not just splashing into seawater...

And in Muckman Messes Up, the Mutagen that creates Muckman and Joe Eyeball has a Kryptonite-esque effect on the Green Team, but...why not Bebop and Rocksteady?

They'd probably screw it up too.... they are Bebop and Rocksteady, after all.

I think Jester was asking why weren't Bebop and Rocksteady also weakened when around Muckman and Joe Eyeball.

Here is my list:

Name That Toon and Menace, Maestro Please
Any episode with Howie is awful but latter was bearable.

For the record, did you mean to say "the former was bearable"? I actually do like Name That Toon, mostly on account of the great animation and fight scenes. But Menace, Maestro is certainly one of the five worst episodes in the old toon, IMO. Animation bad, plot bad (The Phantom of the Sewers executed that concept better), musical number was bad, and of course... it had Howie!:x

I havent seen many episodes beyond episode 111 but I´m working on to watch every episode. Also I have to defend two episodes listed in this thread. Rebel Without a Fin was good episode, Ray was really funny villain, or more of a anti-villain, he just did bad things he had nothing better to do. It was funny to see Leonardo taking it easy and not caring about stuff.

I agree, both of those episodes were fine, although I wish Rebel Without a Fin had better animation and Ray had been used better. Also, that episode has some very weird fade-to-black transitions.

Worst of the Old Toon:

Honorable Mention:
The Turtles and the Hare (seems like a wasted opportunity to use Usagi again although we DID get to see Bebop and Rocksteady in bunny outfits)
Funny, They Shrunk Michaelangleo (primarily bad on account of the squeaky voices on shrunken characters)
Raphael Vs. the Volcano (primarily bad on account of the animation, although the plot isn't much better, but at least we learn April knows how to fix a helicopter.. which is pretty impressive)
Poor Little Rich Turtle (yeah, that girl was annoying...)

5. Rondo in New York (although I do appreciate a good Rambo parody, pity it was so poorly executed... I'm looking especially at YOU, animation!)
4. Back to the Egg (the baby Turtle thing just didn't work for me, although I think the plot "could" have worked)
3. Michaelangelo Toys Around (Yeah, nothing like silly kids and toys that want to kill you)
2. Menace, Maestro Please
1. The Gang's All Here (If Lionsgate was going to intentionally leave off an episode, this should have been the one!)

Michaelangelo turning into a human did effect his ninja skills. Remember he got put into the body of what looked like a frail teenager, his Turtle body was a lot more muscular.

He tried to lift up Rocksteady (?) by the arm and couldn't do it, simply because his human body had no strength.

I think people missed that point.

Gang's all here and April foolish. Sky turtles was pretty lame too. Although i still laugh when Rocksteady passes out due to smelling his own sock. As for Rebel without a fin, I had no Idea that was Ray Filet, his voice just seemed so out of character though.

Yes, but why? They make it seem that as a TURTLE Mikey had special powers. Yes, he was a frail waif of a human, but that frail human would still have years of ninja training.

I think someone missedf that point.

He also had to adapt to his new body. In the beginning of the episode he tries to skateboard and he can't really do that either. He had to weigh a lot more as a Turtle than as a human.

Yeah, I do agree the writer of that ep didn't handle it too well but that ep is far from the disaster people make it out to be. Especially since the subplot of April and those gang members was pretty interesting.

What he means is.. he shouldn't have been a frail teenage human, he shoulda been a muscular teenage ninja human. The muscles and years of training didn't have to vanish. Shredder and Lotus were still human ninjas. It's almost like saying that if Splinter ate one of those cookies he also would have lost all his ninja skills cause he was no longer a rat.

That episode really was a trainwreck. As Coola points out, there's no reason for Michelangelo to have lost his muscular build simply because of the "mutation". Nothing about the "mutation" made any sense, especially the articles of clothing that kept mysteriously appearing and reappearing.

But, I'd like to state that at one point Michelangelo said, and I quote, "This mutagen is so unstable, I don't know when I'm gonna lose my turtle powers." Then later, Rocksteady said, "Big talk for a guy that just lost his turtle powers."

So, ya... are we to believe that if Splinter were to be turned back into a human, he'd lose his supposed "rat powers"?

While I can understand what the episode was trying to do, it failed horribly. There were so many errors and so little logic that the intended purpose was executed quite horribly.

Attack of Big MACC - Annoying robot.

Take Me to Your Leader - Leonardo gets unmotivated because of a bad dream? What a great show of confidence and courage, what a leader! This is one of the reasons why I never liked Leonardo.

Making of Metalhead - So there's a turtle pocks disease that only affects mutant turtles? wow

Green With Jealousy - worst.episode.ever

The Gang's All Here - Michelangelo was worthless as a human, I can undertand him loosing his fighting ability and strenght, but his skateboarding skills?

Mr. Ogg Goes to Town - That thing was so annoying!

Name That Toon - I hate that singer!

Four Turtles and a Baby - These kind of episodes are embarassing to the TMNT fandom.

Back to the Egg - see above.

Adventures in Turtle Sitting - see above.

Muckman Messes Up - Gross.

Welcome Back, Polarisoids - I don't have anything against the original Polarisoid, but why did he have to bring his family along, this time? And why does he have such annoying kids?

Ring of Fire - Lisbon doesn't have a bullfighting festival and doesn't have bulls runnig around the streets, most portuguese people don't even support bullfighting, the South of Spain is more of a fan of bullfighting than entire Portugal, how ignorant can these writers be?:x

I liked this episode because of the way Shredder kept taking advantage of him, fun ep.

Wow, how could you dislike Metalhead's episode? So what if the Turtles had a flu that only affects mutants? The episode itself was pure gold, especially when Metalhead went beserk.

Green With Jealousy - worst.episode.ever

If this was the ep with the love potion, I loved it. Rocksteady having a crush on April was hilarious, as was the Turtles with Irma. You need to have a sense of humor with eps like these.

I liked some of the other eps you mentioned too, but it doesn't matter.

For some reason, that robot annoyed me through the entire episode.

Yeah, when he went beserk was fun, but it still is one of my least favourite episodes.

I guess I have a different type of humour.

But I respect your opinions.

I liked some of the other eps you mentioned too, but it doesn't matter.

Raphael Knocks 'em Dead, Mutagen Monster & Rondo in New York are 3 of my favourite Old Toon episodes and most people hate them, opinions.

BTW, who else liked Shredder's Mom? It's one of my favourite episodes!

The begining was pretty fun with Bebop & Rocksteady breaking into Irma's house and I liked when she was kidnapped by them and made Shredder, Bebop & Rocksteady life a living hell, always messing up and saying "I'm sorry!".
I liked when The Terminator shot at everybody who muttered the word "Turtles".
