if this is the final product, and Im guessing that it is, then it's pretty obvious that Playmates hasnt put any effort into this so called *anniversary*. it's a disappointment to say the least.

I suppose it is if you were expecting a real live mutant turtle to call your own from Playmates and hadn't heard the news of re-issuing the original figures, but it's not like that the final product is a shocking development that's sending fans into tears or anything.

We've known about this for awhile.

I think the box art is just fine, its not like G.I. Joe did anything spectacular for there 25th, this is pretty much what I expected to look like what the originals did and they did that plus adding a original dvd which is cool, Thats if this is the real re-issue packaging.

NoPressApril
01-06-2009, 04:35 PM
How cool. That packaging is sharp and a helluva tribute to the old line. I wish that Playmates had went with the tent hook instead of the J-peg but that's really minor. The inclusion of classic episodes on DVD is pretty sweet too. Now, I wonder which online retailers are going to be selling cases? :)

oooooooooh sarcasm...

I meant the lack of effort that they put into their packaging. every other toy line that has done commemorative figs has made a effort to present their reissues in a package that has usually complimented the original product. but its clear that playmates doesn't feel that the TMNT reissues are worthy of being presented to the fans like the Star Wars or MOTU reissues. and besides, this is just messy, 2 really large and unattractive stickers on the bubble, the card art doesn't match the originals, and I just love the way they tucked April in the corner on the bottom of the card like she doesn't matter. and why the hell is Mikey slanted in the bubble? I sure as hell don't remember that from the original line. yeah great job Playmates, you cant even display your figs in their package upright.

Thank you for covering everything I thought, I'm just going to have Sarah speak for me from this point forward :)
Yes. True fans whine about everything and buy it anyway.
I've said from the start that I will not be buying a single one of these, and the disappointment continues.
There is one thing to whine and then there is constructive criticism which Sarah is doing and she is completely correct about the things she listed.
That is some of the worst layout and design work I've ever seen, it's sloppy as all hell.
I can't wait to see how aesthetically displeasing the back is now.
Each character should have their own had brand new art that was close to the old box's but different enough that people knew, they should have also used some sort of gold anniversary sticker or something.
I made it one of my goals not to complain in this new year, but it's hard to not be disappointed when untalented hacks are out there doing bad design jobs.

VaughnMichael
01-06-2009, 09:25 PM
These are just so horrible in a graphic designers eyes it makes them want to bleed purple goo.
Geez the back is even worse I seriously cannot believe those images ended up on it!
And I am dumbfounded that they would release that horrible little Krang that came with the 1994 Android Body without the body.
It looks as if Krang will be some sort of pack-in for pantless Shredder.
They should have just release this again.

LMAO if Shredder is actually Pants-less.

Anyway the DVD looks like its using the same type of LionsGate artwork, could they actually be the volumes packed in? That would make it a great deal, at least those who don't own them. Though its more likely they all have different random episodes that don't even feature the character you just bought. Who knows maybe they include the skipped episodes from the volume sets:lol:

*lots of serious issues with toys*

Grr. Take it so seriously, why don't you? It isn't as if I was saying that every fan buys everything regardless of quality. I'm probably one of the most easy-to-please fans of the TMNT and I still don't buy everything. Even if I had the money I wouldn't buy everything. Certain things cater to my interest. These toys don't exactly do that because I'm more into the comics and DVDs. I'm tempted to pick them up but I'm contemplating if it's worth it compared to some other things I want to pick up.

Chill out. You don't need to get so angry that you double-post.

I'm fine with them re-releasing them honestly I don't give 2 sh1ts more money in my pocket to buy Dc Universe and Marvel Legends figures.
But when the box art is just that down right bad I as a design who busts his butt to get jobs is offended by such bad art by someone who shouldn't even be working in the graphic design field if their skills are that bad.
It looks like some fan made desktop wallpaper on ninjaturtles.com
So as you see i'm not about the toys themselves it's the thought or lack there off behind it all that gets my goat.

Agreed. Personally I despise buying figures retail. I wonder why these haven't been made available to online companies, Playmates has no problem selling them the new Star Trek figures. I think that I will just buy these from Ebay. Even at inflated prices it still beats the stress of having to deal with the idiots that work at my local Target and TRU. I guess i'm just really spoiled from being able to order sealed cases of Star Wars and DST's TNG figures without hassle. :-?

The part where people keep being a-holes into the new year even though the things I've said a millions times keep being proven

one thing that Ive learned in the short time that Ive been here is that Vaughn is always correct with the information that he posts. unlike most of us, Vaughn is one of the few people on the Drome that has inside sources and he knows what he's talking about. give it time... you'll see that he's right.

It's a bit of a shame they're not keeping the individualized cards since they're already done anyway, but it'll definitely kick ass to see the old school stuff on the pegs again.

welcome to CANADA!!! they have been using that method here since I was a kid. it's cheaper for them to produce one single generic cardback and put a sticker on the bubble to identify the character than it is to create individual cards for each character. it's done here for the purpose of having multi-language cards without any creativity. (and for some reason some Americans collect Canadian variants.) and I don't have any complaints about the figs themselves...yet. but for all I know they could be made with inferior plastic and they'll break right after you open them. it wouldnt shock me if Playmates cheaped out on the quality of the figs as well. but don't get me wrong, Im glad that they're reissuing the original TMNT figs, I just wish it was handled in a more respectful way.

I haven't, but I'm familiar with the plot (and the hilarious Brawndo 'commercials', done by the same dude that does the PowerThirst ones).

My point was, we're supposed to be here discussing the figures, not whining about who's right, who's wrong, who's rubbing their nose in things, who's making "I told you so's" like Toxic Crusaders' Psycho... There is way too much arguing and drama on these forums, and we need to be more civilized.

You know as well as I do that it's not going to go down like that as long as someone always has a differnce of opinion.
Anyway I just got back from Target they had nothing new.

Yeah I did the DPCI thing at 2 Target stores (one was a Super) and nothing. Another auction has popped up on the bay with the set of 4 turtles. thegame24 said that all he saw were the turtles too. I wonder if the secondary characters are even in these cases.

That's why I was out looking, I want to see how the other figures are packed and if the paint is any differnt from the other re-releases over the past years.

They should be yes, but Toys R Us is a bit slow with getting new merch out some times.

I have to admit I kind of don't want to look like a weirdo buying these things. Still buying action figures is accepted at places like comic stores, because they know the whole collectible idea, not so much at normal retail stores probably.

Idiocracy! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/)

One of my favorite movies.

ill be picking these up for sure. we are lucky we are getting anything for the 25th. transformers and gi joe didnt get hardly squat.

Huh? The GI Joe 25th Anniversary was great. It completely revamped and rejuvinated the line, and got GI Joe back in to stores like Target and Wal-Mart after being absent since 2005. and there was a large Number of figures released for it.

Jester

Wasn't the 25th what lead to the 2 box sets with the bases with the speakers in them...the one that had the theme and the clip from the movie..."Cobra...COOOBRA! Cobra...COOOBRA!!"

GK Punk
01-07-2009, 10:51 PM
They released 3 Box sets that had figures and Speakers like that. the third one is the one you are refering to. They also released like 50 single carded figures, probably 20 Comic/Figure 2 packs, 4 Vehicles and a bunch of Store Exclusives.

To say Hasbro didn't do anything for the GI Joe 25th anniversary is a huge understatement.

Right. July 26th I was at Wal-Mart for "midnight madness" waiting to buy the new ROTJ figures and the employees were walking by snickering and giving each other looks at the expense of myself and the others that were there waiting. It's like that everywhere here. "Toys be fer chirren! Adults that buys them is gunna sales um or lives in momma's basement" so online shopping makes my toy habit less stressful. One guy on the Rebelscum forums admitted to buying a kid's birthday card when he buys new figures for himself just to keep the cashier from giving him "the look". I thought that was funny.

I generally get weird looks when buying things such as several TPBs at once or whatever when I'm at a normal bookstore. What really weirds them out, though, is that I'm dressed, groomed, and acting completely normal and if anyone comments on my buying habits I generally respond in a very friendly way as if they were making small talk and I'm completely oblivious to the fact that whatever I'm buying might be strange to a lot of people.

It just messes with people so much when I start clashing stereotypes together like that and act like it's no big deal. They just don't know what to do so they just go back to minding their own business.

I've never had a hard time either, must be just certain people in certain areas.

I think it's the area too. There must be a heckuva lot of scalpers around here. A few years ago I even had the manager at one local Wal-Mart tell me that I am a scalper because I am an adult who buys figures and not to come back because they wouldn't help me anymore after asking him about the Wal-Mart exclusive wave of WWE figures that had a Lita figure in it that I wanted. They seem to see scalpers everywhere and treat people accordingly. I guess that's why I hate scalpers so much.

Well i'm as excited as you are about these but on the other hand I can understand why alot of fans are pissed. To me these are awesome because i'm a MOMC collector and this is brand new packaging, another variation and another chapter in the vintage line that I love so much. However, if I opened my toys these would just be figures that I already own and don't need again so I would feel pretty shafted having stuck with this line for 21 years with nothing but Hot Topic t-shirts to celebrate the anniversary with. Oh, and the possibility of a pantless Shredder variation that looks like an 80's Masters of the Universe reject. Couple that with the fact that $8.99 a piece beats the hell outta what people have had to pay on Ebay to get these same figures for years now and i'd say i'm surprised that people aren't bitching more.

I was going to try and wait until they hit other stores to see if the $9 was the actual price but I saw them at Target and bought a set. It was just two sets of the four turtles, which is what I imagine is the case they're shipping right now. They were $8.99 and said classic turtles. It's possible that's the price for the mirage inspired figures, target has messed up prices before (Target Marvel Legends being $15 because of the Foom wave, they later dropped them to $10 and I got burned on that one).

I noticed the paint looks a little more flat on the plastron. Of the 8 figures at least 4 or 5 had lousy paint apps, especially on the knee/arm pads and teeth. Good luck guys!

Edit: Oh by the way, it was ****ing incredible to see these in stores again, especially Target since that's where I got a lot of my original figures back in the day.

Double Edit: Sorry I'm kind of surprised how excited I am about these but I just realized that since the original turtle toys were made in 1988, the same figures have been rereleased in both decades since. The figures were still being released into the 90's but they were all rereleased in 1998/99. Now they're being reissued in 2009. Will they continue in 2019? 2029? ;)

Also, the four turtles all come with different episodes. They're all from season 1. Leo - Episode 1 Turtle Tracks
Don - Episode 2 Enter the Shredder
Raph - Episode 3 A thing about Rats

So I went to target tonight looking for the anniversary turtles, and they were sold out. Because these toys havn't been hard to find at all, the box designs are horrible, and Shredder is pantless, and that Mini Krang is from the 1994 android body which they could have easily added to the lineup.
Many of these figures go on sale on ebay and at much less than stores are charging for these umpteenth re-releases.
The only one I could honestly see myself getting is Slash as he has never been re-released.

If you mean figures that look exactly as they did in the old toon, then no Peter Laird stated in his blog that he feels there is no such reason for figures to be made of those designs and that the old Playmates toys are good enough.

So, who wants to guess what episodes the rest come with?

My guesses if the missing episodes aren't included:
Shredder/Krang: Shredder & Splintered
Splinter: Splinter No More
April: April's Fool
Casey Jones: Casey Jones: Outlaw Hero
Slash: Slash - The Evil Turtle from Dimension X
Rocksteady: The Adventures of Rhino-Man
Bebop: Bebop and Rocksteady Conquer the Universe
Foot Soldier: The Foot Soldiers Are Revolting

Notice that aside from Rocksteady everyone's name is in the title (and even then, Rhino-Man is Rocksteady). I really hope I'm wrong and the missing episodes are with the figures, especially since I've NEVER SEEN THEM

I just had a look at the artwork for these figures. Now I've read through this read and heard mention about the old packaging which I remembered and loved and what good reason playmates had for not choosing those old ones again.

I personally love the box art as it's the vintage artwork compiling all the characters being released in this anniversary set. I for one thing they did a great job with the box art. Any thoughts?

I'm going to dig up my old card backings. When I opened all the figures back in the day I had a nasty habit of keeping the card backing of every guy :). I'd like to check and see if this new card has been sampled from the old ones or not, though im sure it has been.

BigApple3AM
01-10-2009, 05:24 PM
I saved all my cards too. The cardback is reminiscent of the original 88 cardback with slash and casey jones thrown in. It is disappointing they didn't keep the bio cards, but I'm glad they kept the comic strip at the top (which coincidentally shows Shredder WITH pants).

I wouldn't mind having one generic card, but the layout is just weird. April's just a torso in the bottom right corner. Everything just looks so smashed and drag and dropped. I think the same effect could have been done better.

Yes, it's not the old art I have a problem with it's the fact that the layout is so poorly designed and crammed together, not to mention how bad the perspective is with some of the characters in conjunction of other characters on the box.
Everything just looks randomly slapped together as if it was done in a rush without a care in the world.
Quality controll hasn't been one of Playmates strong points since their return to the scene in 2002, but seriously this is just a mess.
I wouldn't say it was bad if it wasn't, because I've given them plently of praise over the years.
I think they should have had some new Box art created for each character like Peter Laird was working on but then was rejected by Playmates.
I know the toy market is odd right now and box art has been generic since the late 90's but hell even the G.I. Joe and Transformers figure all had their own box art for the anniversary figures.
As bitter as I am about them not making toon acurate figures instead of these, I would have gladly plopped down money for the umpteenth re-release of these figures had they actually put a bit of work into the package designs.

All and all a nice thought but the execution is poor.

Because they all have had the same cards for each wave ever since the movie line started. They can't afford different card for each, so they tried to put everyone on the front and cut the file cards (though they should have included them in the bubble like the ones from the mid 90's).

Hope that's what you ment. By the way you said it, I couldn't tell if you wanted them to reprint the originals (which are some of the only card art that makes me want any MISB) or so pointing out that it looks fine.

I've been trying to build up my Foot Soldiers since I was a kid & to this day I only have like, 6 or so. This 25th Ann. toyline is gonna be a HUGE help in me getting my army built up nicely. :D

I agree with people's opinion of the tiny Krang being with Shredder. Seems like it'd be cooler just to release him IN that android body of his, but maybe they figured it'd just be easier to kill 2 birds with 1 stone & have him as a pack-in.

Still don't know why Shredder has no pants though...

I too dream of a Foot army. Don't know why, but I love that mold. My problem is the price tag. $9-11 is what I'm hearing. It will be almost cheaper to make my custom Foot army using Marvel Universe Ronin paint included. Still, it's nice to see more of it made.

These figures were $8.99 at Target, which is still a bit of a hike compared to their original price tag of $3.99 back when they first came out. My whole way to "deal" with the price increase is, if I were to go out & try to buy a MOC original Foot Soldier it's gonna cost me at least 10 bucks anyways, if not a little more (or less if I find a good deal). Plus, I first have to find the original MOC Foot Soldier, then pay for shipping, so in the long run (at least, as far as I see it), it just pays to slap down the $9 dollars & save myself some time. Plus, with Foot Soldiers, if you already have 1 with the Bio Card/Cardback, do you really need one for every other Foot Soldier we'd buy?

Also, I wonder if the price is due to the DVD being included, OR simply Playmates trying to milk more money out of the collector community? AND, will only the turtles be coming with DVD's, or will all of the toys be?

EDIT: Off topic, but has anyone seen the Marvel Universe figures yet? I'm not sure if their out yet or not.

Not me, & I traveled ALL over the place today; went to one store reeeeally far from my house & hit a lot of places on the way back (4 Stop & Shops & 2 Target's). Only real "new" toys I saw were the 25th TMNT figures. The Target that picture was taken in only have 1 Dons & 2 Mikeys, the 2nd Target had all 4 but nothing else.

The target I went to today had two of each 25th anniversary figs, so I bought a set of all 4 turtles, when I seen them in the toy section I felt like a kid again it was awesome, but anyways I watched 2 of the dvd's and the quality is the same as the old toon dvd quality so they did'nt upgrade it.

As I work at Wal-mart and...We have yet to even get the wal-mart exclusive marvel legends figures!

OT, I know, but are you referring to the figures like Kang and Heroes Reborn Iron Man? If so I live in North Alabama and my Wal-Mart has had those figures in stock since before Christmas...right over where the Turtles used to be.

Which ones?
OR simply Playmates trying to milk more money out of the collector community?
Not so much collectors as most of us have these things and are over it.
It's obvious what they are aiming for and that is nostalgia, just look around this thread alone and you can see that this is the majority of peoples reasoning for wanting these, even though I see all of these figures pretty cheap on my weekly ebay searches till this day, but hey who am I to tell people what to spend or save money on.

Every Wal-Mart is oddyl differnt with the way it's set up and stocks it's toys or what they get in even.
For whatever reason the Wal-Mart I work at hardly ever gets any good action figures in.
There's pretty much only one in the area that stocks a good amount of action figures, and sadly by the time I get there the scalpers have taken all of the harder to find figures like Crossbones.
But yes Those are the figures I'm talking about I finally found a Kang.
All of my side money has been going to Marvel Legends characters I like as well as Dc Universe ones, Playmates would seriously be smart to finally get on the boat and do a line like those.

I saw these at Target today & nearly freaked out. Not so much 'cause of the turtles (as I have them already), but because I thought there would be Foot Soldiers there- which there wasn't. :ohwell:

Here's a picture I took with my cell phone whilst I was in Target:

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l2/TheBoglin/Pics%20of%20toys/011009_1654.jpg

I have the majority of these figures already, but I DO know my little Snailman-self will be buying lots of Foot Soldiers soon as I see them on the shelf.

I for one am very excited about these, even though I would have liked to have seen more characters and more cartoon accurate color schemes. I think it is possible that the small Krang may very well be pictured without his Android Body but still be more than a Shredder accessory, they might have done that to save space on the back of the card. We'll have to wait and see...are the turtles the only figures out so far? Really looking forward to these.

They had them at the South Setakuet Target & some other one near Commack I think. It was my first time to that store out in that area, so I don't know "technically" were it is located, but both had the figures. The Sout Setakuet Target actually had more, were as the othr store just have 2 Mikey's & a Donny on the pegs.

I live in Cali and went to three Targets, nothing. This is common though we never get jack **** over here. All those Marvel Legends toys and collectible stuff we never get, ever. Unless the basement jockeys hawk the toy aisles and buy them all before I ever see them. From what I've noticed they never stock the action figure aisle at all. Almost every Target, or toy store, I go into has the same figures they had before and almost all the pegs are empty. What they do have left is usually a bunch of the same character, like some fat guy from Star Wars.

I know they're doing resets right now but if the Targets on the east coast are already done there's no reason they shouldn't have done it already over here, lazy bastards. It takes like four days to do a reset and they let you wear street clothes when you do it so customers don't bother you.

I'm just gonna say, I saw these yesterday, and I have to admit, I like what they're trying to do. By which I mean, I don't like how they've done it, I don't like how they've gone about it... but I like what they intended.

Looking at them, I think the box art is Meh... at least we didn't get saddled with rererererererereused stock art. And I think including a pack in DVD was pretty brilliant. Sure, it's an episode we probably all have by now in our completest box sets/volumes... but I think that these weren't designed for the hard core fan base that has every figure five times over, and has collected them even during the dry spell 1996-2001 era, and the reissued repacks that sold at KB for 3 bucks each (Kicking myself for not buying many of them). These are clearly for the kids who grew out of them, lost or destroyed them, and didn't care to check E-bay because they would see these in a store and say "Dude, used to have these. And since they have a 25th sticker on them, I automatically care about these again."

There are a couple things I do find fault with myself... first of all, the price. 8.99? These things should clearly retail for 7 bucks or less. The one thing I always liked about Playmates and the 2k3 line was that when other companies were stocking hard sell 10 dollar and up figures, they still managed to sell TMNT at 5 to 6 to 7 at the highest. Secondly, these things are begging for figure bases. Nothing fancy... just a black (or green) circle of plastic with a peg in it, maybe stamped to say "25th" on it. And Third, I always hated the plastic card with the weopons on it. But I see what they're getting at.

And you gotta admit, they put fan favorite Slash in the line up. That completely shocked me. It's almost sort of kind of listening to fans, I guess.

I kinda wanna get Bebop, Rocksteady and Casey, though.

Oh just so everyone knows there will be box sets of the old TMNT figures as well.
Or well that is what I've been told.

I think that is a more brilliant idea. I would really be willing to get a box set of the figures if the Box is well designed enough, and comes with some sort of bonus. And not just a DVD. Just don't make it as extravagant as the 25th Optimus Prime... that really bumped the price up to an incredibly high 60+ bucks.

Ok why the F do people know the release dates for other figures but no one knows them for these figures??
It's traditional for toy companies not to give an exact release date. However, in recent years some companies started listening to fan demand for a release date. Hasbro's one such company. I'm not sure, but I think it started with Star Wars and went so well they started to do so for their other big lines.

Anyways...Oh boy, it's analogy time!

WARNING: Bad puns ahead...
I see the toy aisles as a chess board monarchy. There's the most important company, the King, which if captured it's pretty much all over. Hasbro is the King with Transformers, GI Joe, Star Wars, and Marvel the toy aisles wouldn't be the same without them. Mattel is the queen. Powerful, but not the most important (Also, they don't make many good action figures, but they still command a lot of power). Marvel Toys/ToyBiz is the Bishop. Ever since they lost Marvel, they just kind of zigzag trying to find another great one like Marvel Legends. The Rook would be Bandai. Power Rangers has been the power house since it started, but Bandai doesn't offer much else. They just keep going straight with the formula that has worked for 16-17 years. Playmates is the Knight. They want to be good, but they can only seem to make left turns. Then all the other small and off-brand companies are the pawns.

...Yes, this what I do with my extra time...and no, I don't know how I got on that subject...

Yes, that was brilliant! But is Marvel Toys zigzagging to another line? I thought it was dead.

I also don't think Playmates is seriously trying to compete with the big boys. If the company were, it would do exceedingly well to steal a better articulation mode for its figuresl! It's not like those things are copyrighted.

Not that that suggestion applies to the 25th anniversary rereleases, but still. :)

Thats WWE that has been with Jakks. Toybiz has/had the TNA license. Jakks is losing WWE. WWE will be made by mattel. TNA is moving to Jakks.

Jakks was wrapped up (along with THQ) in a lawsuit over the licensing agreements with WWE because of some sort of palm greasing involving a brand licensing agent who used to be with WWE. Now that the contract is ending, WWE and Jakks are parting ways. So its already been announced that Toybiz isn't going to be doing the TNA they have been doing.

jakks acquired the license for american gladiators. they figures are/were supposed to be coming out in "spring 2009". Like the last poster said, the show was canceled, so it seems like a bad move to bring out figures at this point, but if it all depends on how far into production they got before the plug was pulled on the tv show. they may still drop (right into the clearance bin) in a couple of months...

for all I know though, the last poster is aware while I am not, of a specific announcement saying the figures were canceled due to the show being dropped. It all depends on how far along they were in production. It was announced that jakks got the license in march 08. It was announced that the show was canceled in december. Thats a lot of time for jakks to have been putting into a product before the show got the axe.

So this is why I'm overly critical at times, that and the turtles have had much better box layouts over the years.
It would have perhaps been better if they split the box into 2 designs Good Guys & Bad Guys so they didn't squeez to many characters onto one box front making for perspectives and bad sizing that make my head want to explode.

Yeah, totally. Even the one with Raph holding the figure wouldn't have been bad. But I like your idea about splitting the art between good guys & bad guys. What they COULD have done, was have 3 different types of card art:

- All 4 Turtles

- Splinter, April & Casey Jones

- Shredder/Krang, Rocksteady, Bebop, Slash & Foot Soldier

That might not have been TOO bad, & at the very least not as crowded.

Actually, wasn't this new packaging done already when the turtle toys were released over seas?? :-?

Hey Vaughn, Didn't you say you worked at walmart like over and over again?

When an art director or executive type in a suit tells an art department employee that based on the production numbers and given a specific budget they're required to produce a single cardback using the old card art its not being lazy or bad at their job when they complete the task. Perhaps they all want to do more and can't because of time or budget issues. Its time for you to learn how the BUSINESS of graphic design or other production works and stop talking about how you bust your butt looking for work and actually begin outputting work rather than posting here hundreds of times a day about how you could do it all better and acting as though you're some kind of authority on something you have nothing to do with. You're not aware of how many man hours can paid out for design costs on a project. At a certain point, from a business perspective, the more labor based art efforts result in only marginally better sales, yet increase costs in major ways. How many people that WERE going to buy the figures now WON'T because the card is generic with 'poorly designed art'? Weigh that against the cost of printing up individual cards or, as you suggested one good and one evil. In the end, the actions you suggest lead to more cost, but not to more sales. Its just nitpicking from a fanboy you can't please. A couch quarterback, a backseat driver, a takeout chef. You'll always think you know more and assert your opinion online as though others care what YOU think.

Ok, you don't like something, constructive criticism is fine. Everyone has an opinion. Just don't bitch and moan about how you can do it all better because you're jealous of those people in those jobs. Don't try to convince fans you know how the business works. You aren't a professional graphic designer. Perhaps you dabble in freelance once in a while, but you have said time and again, you stock shelves at WALMART. If I am wrong, link me to your online portfolio and I will eat my words. Oh, hahahaha, before I go any, further slapping sculpy on an "entrigan the demon" figure's head and repainting him doesn't count. I want to see where the work is that you got paid to produce that was released commercially.

You said the new playmates turtles were copies of the movie figures then bitched for two pages on the other thread about playmate's laziness. You have a terrible eye for detail. I can tell you, you are a joke where I work. You even use your real name as your ID while you run your mouth off about how you know it all hahahahhaha. Walmart, man, WALMART!

With your attitude put right out there on a forum like this, always knocking down anything new that's made, especially when you email your contacts, you're not in the process of getting work in that field. They know you as a big fanboy nitpicking critic. They try to be polite to you so you don't continue to drag people's names through the dirt. Everyone who is actually in the business is lazy, stupid, or some other negative quality in your eyes unless you have personal contact with them and they give you "insider" information. In which case, you feel they're victims of the same idiot run machine that is keeping good ideas out.

Dude, you work at walmart. Other guys, the ones who you think are idiots, MAKE ninja turtles cartoons, toys and comics. If you can do it better, get off your butt and do it. There is more to the BUSINESS of doing graphic design than nitpicking other people's work and having a bunch of ideas. If you can do it better, present your non-existent portfolio to playmates and try to get hired. Getting told "you don't have what it takes" a few times might open your eyes in seeing you have nothing under your belt and you're an arrogant, cocky, opinionated fanboy-one who wasted a lot of mommy and daddy's money going to college for nothing. Perhaps being rejected a few times with slap some sense into your head and you'll actually see how much work you have ahead of you if you wish to get into a professional setting.

Dude, you work at walmart. You're not a graphic designer for a living. There is a reason my name was DonsAssistant and I have been very positive on these threads. This is my last post. You sir, are a plight of epic proportions on TMNT fandom and I wish you would grow up and see 1-YOU WORK AT WALMART and 2-calling every move made by people in the business stupid or lazy isn't going to help anyone in any capacity. It doesn't make you a fan. It makes you a wannabe creative talent. If you don't think we'd like to do more but at times are shackled by time and budget restraints you're on a different world. It just points out your ignorance. This isn't the fine art 'I'll get it done when I feel like and I do it because I want to express my feelings'-make believe world. We all know who 'Vaughn Michael' is in my office and if you think this is how you get work, man you definitely have a lot to learn.

Hey Vaughn, Didn't you say you worked at walmart like over and over again?

Who the hell are you and why should anyone care what you have to say? On a side note telling someone off works better when you sound intelligent and don't repeat yourself multiple times.

Just my own graphic design junky gripes.

You know what, man... I wonder what (since you're on the MC forum with me) Frogboy would say about something like this. It reminds me of one of his problems about the Muppet stock pictures having random other characters shoved in them, and they have different shadows and stuff all over them that don't match up with the image. And everything in those shots seems so cluttered and ill fitting. You know the image I'm talking about. The group shot with random characters splunched in?

I see what you're getting at after I took a really good look at it. It does seem way too cluttered. in its composition. Plus, wasn't some better art work rejected for this?

Trying to preach about what the real world is like? I don't imagine creative people go on internet forums to bitch back at the fans? Not only did you lower yourself to any fan level, you went lower with all the name calling and "you work at wal-mart?!" ********.

Hey Vaughn, Didn't you say you worked at walmart like over and over again?

When an art director or executive type in a suit tells an art department employee that based on the production numbers and given a specific budget they're required to produce a single cardback using the old card art its not being lazy or bad at their job when they complete the task. So, if I may be so bold, both DonsAssistant and Vaughn have been taking this thing ridiculously hard.

Even as toy collectors, is it so hard to just not give a damn about what the tagboard design is? I can't think of anything more trivial. And when not engaging in a psychotic rant, DonsAssistant made legitimate points about budgets and sales.

I completely disagree. These are toys that were released over 20 years ago and were completely flooded back then. Then they released them again 10 years ago and flooded wal-marts, kb toys, targets, k-marts, and toys r us with them again.

The only difference is the packaging. For collectors this makes it the most important part. If it's not very good it's disappointing.

Unprofessional FTW.
As an industry professional who also works in the design and production of childrens product... I have to tell you, if my execs caught me blasting like that about my industry and company on a public forum, I would be shot, hung, and THEN fired. DonsAssistant needs to learn some composure. His job may depend on it. I can't begin to tell you how many times I have held my tounge in public spaces about my company's product or intellecual properties not only to be the better person, but simply because I like my job.

Wow. I just skimmed over DonsAssistant's post and the replies suggesting that he's from Playmates. Didn't Playmates start a bunch of drama over on Murphy's board awhile back due to nobody there liking Music Don?

If such is the case and DonsAssistant is from Playmates, I think some company policies need to be instituted where employees don't get into flamewars on the internet with franchise fans. They'd be wise to take a note from FUNimation and all the crap they've gotten from Americanizing Dragonball Z.

EDIT: There are good points coming from both sides of the issue, but it doesn't need to get this heated. It's art on a box for a toy.

Hmm, interesting. I think this really does prove that Playmates has sorely degraded as a company though.

Besides that, it shows some people still use the "YOU CAN'T KNOW IF IT'S BAD IF YOU DIDN'T DO IT!" thing.

Hey Vaughn, Didn't you say you worked at walmart like over and over again?

The economy is bad, my friend. I work for Apple and I am a computer technician. I have a degree in history and I can do all kinds of history quizzes on the fly with certain success. Just because one 's current job is not their intended profession... does not mean that their opinions are lower.

My father worked for Will Eisner on The Spirit comic books back in the 70's. Since then, he has worked as a graphic artist for bigger companies - such as Prudential. He agrees that the artwork is poorly made for a mass produced image - and he would know. His work has been printed in many different languages in many different countries. He admits that not all projects are the best. However, he will say that prospect of mass producing a poorly engineered card backing is not the way to entice customers to purchase something - add something to make it unique.

For example, after I got home from Apple, I happened to take my father to the local comic book shop with me to go look for some good old Cable and Deadpool issues. They had a collection of the old Ghostbusters figures and the original TMNT figures. We looked over the packaging and both agreed that it was a great touch that each card was made for the packaged character. An individual design and build customized to make that package become an accessory to the figure. An element that is missing from these packaging. Hasbro - a company where my mother was an art director at for during the 1980's - has done a great build for the Transformers packaging. Each 25th Anniversary figure is package with new and fresh artwork on the front.

While you drowned on your soap box drowning in your own saliva, think of the fact that Vaughn's stockboy work is a clear indication of him knowing what sells. Which figures do you think he is going to restock more often: 25th Anniversary TMNT pegwarmers or the 25th Anniversary Transformers?

You said the new playmates turtles were copies of the movie figures then bitched for two pages on the other thread about playmate's laziness. You have a terrible eye for detail. I can tell you, you are a joke where I work. You even use your real name as your ID while you run your mouth off about how you know it all hahahahhaha. Walmart, man, WALMART!

Seeing how this is what you think and act, it is no wonder why almost all the Walmarts have stopped carrying TMNT products.

This just makes no sense. Why are you so... excitable for the guy who is apparently so cool and better than Vaughn Michael that you have to log into a forum and say Walmart every other sentence? Compensation for what the nature didn't give you?

So where is your portfolio?

Dude, you work at walmart.

You keep beating the dead horse. Are you a masochistic necromancer?

And kids, this guy is a perfect reason why to practice abstinence.

Man, you really miss a lot when you are averse to reading long posts. Man, Vaughn, your name is brandied about at Playmates offices...you lucky fan-boy you. If I were you I'd almost wear that as a badge of honor...people where they make the TMNT figures know who one fan is...maybe if more of us were as vocal, we'd see a change. If there were more Vaughn Michaels maybe then they'd listen.

BTW, having purchased one of the 25th Turtles and looking at the box art, it does seem a might cut and paste. The Foot Soldier kinda floating in mid air on the card seems the most odd. And were Mikey's chuck chains see through in the old art? Now I can understand that there was probably more that the package designer wanted to do, but was constrained by budgets, but I'm sure there were probably card designs that were rejected. They couldn't have gone with the first one...could they?

RAWR RAWR RAWR
Actually, I have and still do allot of work and am being paid to do things for people at mirage at the moment who are a fans of my work because a certain company refuses to make new figures of classic characters.
I'm sorry but I miss the Playmates that used to take chances, you know the company who took a chance on a line of 4 green mutant ninja turtles when no one else would.
I'm glad you folks over at Playmates know me and what I do so well.
And I am and have been a professional graphic designer for years, you do not need to work for the man to be a pro at what you do.
If you want to see my work and you claim to know me as well as you say search for me on myspace and you will see all the work I've done over the years.
I wouldn't want to work for Playmates anyway after what I've been told from the fine folks at Mirage and the past sculptors and designers at how ridiculous they are to work for.
BTW if anyone I talk to meaning Murph, Dan, Tristan, & Ryan have any sort of problem with me that is on them as the majority of them bitch and complain their fare share also, they just won't say anything in public most of the time because they are afraid some person that's in a higher position than them will castrate them, and it shouldn't be like that as all of them do amazing work and bust their asses to make the turtles come out half as decent as it does.
I also see no problem in working a normal job, we are in an economic crisis anyone who talks down any mans job right now needs a reality check.
We are in tough times and I've taken what I can to pay the bills as well as help my family out who can't pay theirs allot of the time.
Much love always the infamous horrible fan boy.
The thing that's funny is, the moment I leave this site I don't even think about these figures or TMNT for the most part.
BTW I saw these in Target today, My opinion still stands on the placement of the art, the the art itself is not the problem as it's fab, saturating the colors a bit would have helped a bit in my honest opinion.

Frogboy is a really nice guy and also a graphic designer, I'm sure he would think the same thing about the scrunched layout.
It's honestly not as big a deal as it's being made out, I just sort of wanted people to see that it could be done better.
If I could get ahold of the files and the background I'd mock up something that could look better.
I think the best thing about the card is the use of the old art and the old logo though.
But yes I do know what Muppet image your talking about it's funny when really looking at it because if you study it you can see errors in places that they forgot to finish editing things.
As I was told many ideas where passed around and rejected, as you can see via Ryan Brown & Peter Lairds blog's Playmates have been rejecting killer ideas for years.
Found Raph, Leo, and Mikey at Target today, but only bought my fave Raphie boy.
I can't lie if and when Slash comes out I'll buy em'
So the date stamps are different? That's actually what I was about to ask. Had they kept the original date stamps, and not given people any way to tell the difference, it would have been kind of a dick move. So I am happy to see they gave us that. Thanks Pmates :-)
Yeah, Tokka posted some pics on his flickr acount lastnight, now the date stamp change is a good thing, this I agree with as it's something that should have been done but you never know.
That is exactly why I notified Playmates of the incident. If they would like to take appropriate action, they may.
Thanks Arch, I'm glad I don't have to now, but I still may forward this to Mirage as well.
While I may not like one design, I just praised them in my other thread about the Mini Exoskeletons.
So there really is no need for some one to go ape sh1t over what I have to say, if I'm just some fan boy with no say in anything.
Damn it. Mike is the one I want!
Thanks for the heads-up.
If anyone needs help finding TMNT figures I'm willing to help as long as they pay store price + Tax for the figure plus shipping, and I will not charge an extra finders fee for them.
You know something? I think VM might work at Wal-Mart.
And you know what I don't care nor am I embarrassed by the fact.
It's one of the best jobs I've ever had, they pay me well, they appreciate me because I'm a damn hard worker.
Allot of people put the store down but allot of really great people work there from all walks of life.
And there is nothing wrong with making an honest days work and no one should be ashamed of what they do especially if it makes them feel good.
Really?!! VM is still the man... who cares if he works at Walmart...
Well thanks Boggle, a man should not be judged by his place of employment.
Nah, it's not Paula. I'd put my money on it being the same guy who wrote this winner (http://the-5th-turtle.blogspot.com/2008/06/playmates-responds-to-p-donnie-post.html).
Agreed 100%, I'm pretty sure this is my buddys old buddy.
Seeing how this is what you think and act, it is no wonder why almost all the Walmarts have stopped carrying TMNT products.
Me thinks this could be the real reason for all the stress on Wal-Mart, They aren't going to sell toys that don't sell.
I'd love to see TMNT in the store I work at, but I sadly have to agree with Wal-Mart on their actions.
Heh I don't know if they'd listen, but if they spent more time at their great jobs doing their amazing graphics instead of joining a forum with fans who want the best out of their fave brand maybe people like me wouldn't be complaining and Wal-Mart would still be selling their TMNT figures.
You should always want the best out of life no matter what it is, I take pleasure in the simple things even if it seems like displeasure at times.
You know even though this person doesn't want to believe it but I've been through this sort of thing before with projects for companies.
They don't like what you do, don't get discouraged just talk to them and ask what they have in mind in exact detail then work around that, good work comes from a good boss and worker relationship.
And while I can certainly understand time restraints and budgets I've done many many jobs for people where I put my all into it regardless of how much they pay me or how much time I have.
I've spent many a sleepless night doing designs for people like Marilyn Manson simply because he wanted it right away and without warning.
You have to have a passion for what you do, if you do the other things won't matter.
I'd design for Playmates for free if it ment having the creativity placed back in their company.
I don't think outside or even inside the box, think next to it.

It's funny this all started out with my noticing the company I work for no longer getting shipments of figures all across the state, then reports started coming in from other states.
Then boom I get the information about us not selling the figures as of this spring.
Honestly, instead of coming here and chewing me out they should be marking what people see as flaws.
The biggest problem I've seen for some time is that they don't have a good relationship with the fans and don't seem to take long time fans into consideration no matter how b1tchy we are, we are still a chunk of where the money comes from and would dish out even more for better products like Marvel Legends and DC Universe quality work.

Hey GK, I'm more than cool with it.
If this person is from Playmates, they should have been establishing some sort of fans relations with this site instead of lurking and getting ticked at my comments about one design.

Personally I don't really see that there is too much that he could have done differently working with only old art, having to include images of every re-released character, and having to put them all on one single generic card that would work for every figure.

Then again, seeing as the packaging was the only part of these figures that is costing Playmates anything to develop, I understand that most would expect single cards. If Playmates had used single cards though how would they have retained the look of the original packaging while making it different enough to look new and refreshed?

The 25th Anniversary logo certainly wouldn't be enough to do it and brand new art defeats the purpose of paying homage to the original figures. It's a conundrum. Personally I would have preferred that April was bigger but at this point it really doesn't matter as she hasn't even been released. She's just a picture on a card. Yes i'm bitter. I guess it should be extremely nostalgic for me though, in 1988 April was just a picture on a card for a long time before I finally found her.

Don't get me wrong though, i'm in no way making excuses for that person's blunt little rant but I can see how this card must have been hard to design, for both him and Playmates. In the end though i'm just thankful that April can be a useful reporter again instead of selling antiques like a 90 year old woman. This is a new chapter in the vintage line's history and that's good enough for me.

I'm also extremely grateful that Playmates didn't include the Pop-Up Displays with these, that would have been a huge insult to the money that i've spent on them and the years that i've been looking for them online. Hopefully they will always remain one of the few sacred aspects of the original run.

I'm happy with everything about these "new" figures, well except for the moronic idea to only release the 4 turtles first. And the J-Peg hook. In my opinion, this package is still a step-up from the purple generic cards of the 90's.:)
