View Full Version : Tales of the TMNT 54
Raph's Girl

Midtowncomics says this is out Wednesday Jan 21st:
Raphael seriously injures the Fugitoid in a bar room brawl leaving the robotic hero struggling with damaged circuitry, a process that tests Professor Honeycutt's fragile psyche to its outer limits!
Poor Fugitoid... :(

Also: It's a barroom brawl. Raph's probably had a few. Or it could have been an accident - maybe Honeycutt attempted to break up the fight and got clocked a good one.

And what time frame does this take place in? If it's a voulme 4 tale I could see Raphael easily clocking him one without not even knowing it.

So this doesn't take place after Fugitoid's head is severed by the mutated Raphael?
That would've seemed like the perfect setup.

Issue looks decent, but holy crap, a color reprint of TMNT Vol. 1 #1? Has there been any other news on this? That'd be great to have.

Do know, but can't say. It's been on the cards for a little while now, and I think Steve Lavigne is working on it now.

I think a color reprinting of #1 can only be awesome, but that just makes me question even more the decision to have #1 be a FCBD comic. It's also being reprinted to be included with Playmates' comic book figures and there's also the TPB collection. How many reprints of #1 do we need?!

Something I had thought myself Rose, but I think the intention of the colorized version is something of a gift for the fans (I think). The FCBD issue would be good just to get casuals into the TMNT comics, people who might not even realize they exist would be getting them for free in the comic shops, and not only that, they would be getting the proper Shredder story (realizing, hopefully, that he wasn't the presence he is in the animated shows). Most fans already have #1 in one way or another, and omitting it from the omnibus wouldn't make a lot of sense either, especially if people are picking it up of the shelf in their LCS weeks, months, or even years down the track.

Gift as in free? In terms of things I have to pay for, a color TMNT #1 is awesome, but I don't see it as a gift. Maybe that non-existent "Art of Mirage Studios" book I could see as a gift.

A free TMNT #1 is also awesome, but it just isn't going to draw a bigger audience to TMNT comics in general. It's a self-contained story that doesn't make people wonder, "What happens next?", the Turtles aren't at all realized as individual characters, and - I hate to say this - on a day very much targeted at kids, this is NOT a kid-friendly comic book.

I never suggested the TPB should exclude #1. I'm just suggesting a #1 overload. It ranks amongst the top key comic book issues of ALL TIME, but it is FAR from the best representation of the TMNT that you can pick from.

You should know better than that! ;)

I hear ya ('cause I'd like to see it too), but I don't crunch the numbers.

I know, but hey, it's not my call. I was going to pitch a story that summarized all the key events of the Turtles comics so people could pretty much jump onto Tales without feeling out of their depth, but the decision had already been made a while ago from the sounds of things.
Still, isn't it coming with the action figures (backs up your overload comment)? Batman and Wolverine also rate highly with the kids and they're probably the least kid-friendly books put out in Marvel and DC's top tiers.
I'd also argue that while there is a significant emphasis on kids, there's also a huge effort to try and pull new readers from the casual market or from other titles. If you give them something they're vaguely interested in reading for free, they're more likely to investigate related titles, provided they like what they see.

No, I didn't mean to sound like that either, but what I meant was that, yes, from the outset, it seems like an overload, but the FCBD thing is more immediate, whereas the omnibus would have the shelf life, both in stores and at home.
As I said, I think the FCBD comic might have been better off as something else, and with the comic being available in the toys (correct me if I'm wrong) it does feel like overload, but again, it's not my call. I'm just calling things as I see 'em. :)

You're creating excuses and rationales to support Mirage's business "strategy" when you simultaneously state that you yourself don't even agree with it.
TristanHuwJones
01-19-2009, 05:44 PM
No, I think you're misreading what I'm saying. I'm saying it might seem like an overload, which is what I thought at first, but I can see the difference between the FCBD release, along with the inclusion of the omnibus. All I said about the colorized version was that I knew it was coming, I don't know when or how. Just because I don't necessarily agree with something doesn't mean I can't see why it makes sense to another person. I'm not even saying that IS Mirage's strategy, because I have no idea what their strategy is, it's just me thinking aloud.

did anyone else see this? they are putting tales up on the anniversary website. explains a little more i guess.
http://tmnt25.com/green_team/tales_of_the_tmnt.html
I liked reading about the projects for the anniversary inside the cover text. The colored TMNT #1 is a surprise. Didn't Steve color those old First Comics TMNT colored trades? But I'm pretty sure #1 was colored by Kevin Eastman back then. Interesting to see what the differances would be. I'd imagine this would be in some sort of prestige graphic novel format at the least. I didn't think they'd even do such a thing ever again. I do agree with the TMNT #1 being overload. But I don't know how else you can expose the TMNT without the original start as an intro mainstream/casual customer.
I really wonder what the other surprise or two Dan was hinting at? Tristan any hints you can give? Is a straight to dvd TMNT production one of these surprises?
Yeah I'd wish they'd do that unreleased Art of Mirage. Seeing all of Peters art on his blog makes me wonder why he don't do it still. Kevin can make a art book why can't he? Theres is way enough material that he has from Kevin, himself and other staffers to make such a book.
I think out of the impending TMNT old trade volume book, TMNT #9 is the one the least that belongs in there. Its in its own story and was a flashback tale that had nothing to do with the overall subplots/narrative of the surrounding issues.

Because it would actually require working.

If the comics ends then what is Mirage's source of income, just the merchandize from the cartoon?
Do all the guys like Jim Lawson, Murphy, Dan, etc. rely on the comic for income?

The comic doesn't make money; Mirage's only source of revenue has been licensing rights for a long time. It's pretty easy money.
"Hey, can we give you a bunch of money to put pictures of Ninja Turtles on pajamas?!"
"OK!"
"Can we give you a bunch of money to NOT publish books with Ninja Turtles?!"
"BRING IT ON!"
Do all the guys like Jim Lawson, Murphy, Dan, etc. rely on the comic for income?
Lawson, yes. Murphy, not completely. His main job is with licensing, but the money he gets for the comic book work he does do doesn't hurt. Dan's main job is the Web site, but the extra comic book money also can't hurt.
I read this issue and thought it wasn't bad. Looking back into the Fugitiods background was neat to see. The one thing I have to say was the art style. Spazzy, squished looking, exagerated artwork is very hard to look through.
Roseangelo thats funny that you said the lost "Art of Mirage" book would require Peter Laird to work.
Thanks for the reponse Tristan.

Well, the story was good. Good fun. Never been really married to the character of Fugitoid, but I've never minded catching up with him either over the years.
Now I hate to say it but the style of art here, though, just didn't seem to mesh with the story at all and, at more times than not, made it a chore for me to get through. But I did enjoy.

I barely heard of Fugitoid 'til I picked up a bunch of Mirage about 8 years ago, and I never really got to read most of 'em more than once, but it's a neat character. The new 'toon eps fleshed him out a bit for me, I think. I dug the issue, I always like "secret origin" kinda stuff (except when April turns out to be... ehhh, what's the point anymore...), so I dug this issue.
I wanna see Fugitoid and Hank Henshaw/Cyborg Superman have a philosophical discussion about the nature of human intelligence/cyborg body existence. Written by Grant Morrison.
HA, no I don't.

Well,
I finally got this issue and while the art is decent in it's own way certain things bothered me or took me awhile to figure out what exactly was going on.
The biggest problem I found with the art was that the size of the Turtles heads kept changing shape.
But for me this issue wasn't about the art it was the deep story of something that never really crossed my mind before.
Making Fugitoid wonder if his mind went into the robot or if it's just a copy, and looking into himself really made this one of the best issues in a long time for me.
I'd definitely enjoy some sort of new Fugitoid mini series.

That's the same conclusion I took from the book. Very deep story that really gave the Fugitoid mythos a new twist.
