View Full Version : Is Spinal Tapped non-canon?

I recently re-read Spinal Tapped (the back-up story in the reprinted Tales Vol. 1 Treasury), and noticed some inconsistencies that might cause it to be non-canon. As I understand, this was supposed to explain what happened prior to the scepter being found in the fish. However, there are some things I still don't get (and may have actually been discussed before, but I'm not going to sift through all of the topics to find it). Beware of spoilers if you haven't read all of the affiliated stories:

Some of these design inconsistencies may be due to Lawson's style changing dramatically between his original run on Tales and now, but a few would not account for anything of the sort:

Savanti's general appearance is vastly different. His horns are set much further back on his head, he has pupils, he has minor thorns between his neck and shoulder but no larger spikes on his shoulders. In his flashback to the events of "The Return of Savanti Romero!", he is wearing a much different tunic - with shoulder flares and no design on the front of it.
In Romero's flashback, he seems to be riding a Pteradactylus. In TRoSR!, he rides a Pteranodon. Also, he does not seem to be carrying the magic scepter that he wielded through much of the story, including during his kidnapping of Renet.
The Time Scepter's design is completely different in Spinal Tapped, eschewing the square, digital-looking design for an hourglass shape.
Renet and the Turtles' prehistoric garbs are completely different. While if this occurred on a different day than the events in TRoSR!'s epilogue, I could see them changing clothes, even though it isn't explicitly stated, I'm pretty sure that the events lead up directly to Renet's catching of the fish that had the scepter. Speaking of which... since that fish ate the little dino... wouldn't they have found his body within the fish as well?
Most importantly, in Masks Part 2, the Turtles are surprised to see Romero alive, and he explains that when the lightning bolt hit him in TRoSR!, it fused with his own magic and put him in suspended animation until the time of Feudal Japan. If this was true, none of these events could have happened, because, not only did he remain active for some time afterward in the prehistoric ages, but the Turtles even encountered him during this time.

I guess maybe I'm finding more of these clues as I look because I want to excuse the ridiculous shoehorning of Renet actually being the source of power and Savanti wanting to use her spine as a scepter. However, taken together, especially with that last point, it seems that this is either non-canon or a poorly done retcon.

all this thinking makes my head hurt..

they most likely went with "the flow" on the story and didn't plan it before hand so things would look better

In his flashback to the events of "The Return of Savanti Romero!", he is wearing a much different tunic - with shoulder flares and no design on the front of it.That's like asking why the Turtles' beaks disappear in Dario Bizuela's issues. It's just a different art style.

In Romero's flashback, he seems to be riding a Pteradactylus. In TRoSR!, he rides a Pteranodon. Also, he does not seem to be carrying the magic scepter that he wielded through much of the story, including during his kidnapping of Renet. It's just a panel meant to summarize the previous issue. A small inconsistancy that's not worth sweating over.

The Time Scepter's design is completely different in Spinal Tapped, eschewing the square, digital-looking design for an hourglass shape. This is a problem. In "The Return of Savanti Romero" Renet introduced the "Sacred Digital Sands of Time," while in "Spinal Tapped" the original Time Scepter is shown. I'd chalk it up to Lawson not having seen the first issue in a long time. Just a sloppy continuity error.

There's nothing to say that this couldn't occur months before finding the Time Scepter in the fish. Plenty of time for them to change clothes.

This is a major problem, and there's really no way around it. All I can say is there are just as many continuity problems with the indisputably canon stories of Mirage. With an independant comic running for twenty years, these problems are sure to pop up here and there.

I guess maybe I'm finding more of these clues as I look because I want to excuse the ridiculous shoehorning of Renet actually being the source of power and Savanti wanting to use her spine as a scepter. That idea may be stupid, but it somewhat justifies her display of god-like abilities in issues like "Juliet's Revenge"

Well, like I said, it may just be due to Lawson's style changing. I just pointed out every little inconsistency so that people could make their own judgment based on everything.

Yeah I remember reading this and thought it seemed outta whack compared to the story it was to have come out of. All these bits made feel this wasn't right or was wrong. Were suppose to see this gap story and yet it had its inconsistencies. Glad I'm not the only who felt like this.

The inconsistency with "Masks" is the only part that bugs me; the rest are just stylistic errors which are common place in the world of comics.

I simply think that "Spinal Tapped" and "Masks" have to coexist, even if they contradict one another....another thing which is common place in the world of comics.

To go for a No Prize, though, you could maybe say that after Savanti was zapped in "Spinal Tapped", he was sent underground where he was buried alive until his unearthing in "Masks".

I mean, it still doesn't explain everything, but it helps.

Having re-read these issues recently, perhaps Savanti had his mind wiped at the end of the "Spinal Tapped" story without knowing?

That could explain why Savanti thought he died back at the end of #7 rather than in the next story, and why he went after the scepter again instead of Renet.

Another plot hole, as mentioned, was that Savanti discovered Renet herself was the time scepter, not the scepter itself. Yet in "Masks" Savanti has Renet captured but he sits there waiting for the scepter to re-appear, rather than using her. All I can say is Savanti had to have his mind wiped to make the stories fit into continuity.

As for Renet, I agree with Cipher that it kind of correlates with her god-like powers in #42. Even if Laird declares that issue non-canon I don't care, that more adult version of Renet was pretty proper development for the character.

Any new takes on this?

Has this ever been reprinted by IDW outside that Best of Renet collection? I want it in a modern collection but I'm not buying some random Renet book of random stories.

"Spinal Tapped" was not reprinted in The Best of Renet, "The Paradox of Chudnovsky" was. I do not believe Spinal Tapped has ever been reprinted. Actually as Paradox does have different dialog than the prior English version, does it even qualify as a reprint? Funny enough, the Paradox story was not universally available when this thread was started. Maybe they'll include Spinal Tapped in a "Best of Savanti Romero" book.

It'll be reprinted in the Tales Omnibus Volume 1 this November.
