View Full Version : Don and Mikey's temper

You know I've noticed alot of people describe Don as being the mild mannered turtle, the one that is all sweet and even tempered. But, an I the only one who notices that Don gets pissy and cranky quite a bit?

Don has shown in almost every medium he's been in that he has a temper. And he certainly shows it in new toon, he constantly gets cranky and peevish. Ok not to the degree that Raph does but I have noticed that when Don is pissy the others seem to be very reluctant to try his patients.

Don in the old toon probably had the biggest temper out of the turtles in that medium. Looking back he blew his top more than once and was probably the most violent of the four.

Out of three turtles Mikey seems to have the smallest temper of the bunch (even over Don it seems) and tends to brush off the bigger stuff and laugh it off or simply ignore it.

NT Mikey doesn't seem to have much a temper. I mean I think we;ve all seen Mikey get angry or intense in battle in in Grudge match but you hardly ever see him get mad at his brothers when they smack him or make fun of him or yell at him, and this goes for people who aren't even his family. The most I've seen Mikey react to this is to say "oh, haha very funny", sarcastically. Raphael can spit water in his face, slam his head into his birthday cake, have Splinter though his cane at his face hard enough to nock him down and Mikey just...doesn't...react.

First time I saw the title of this post, my reaction was:
Don and Mikey has a temper?

I'm sorry, but I didn't actually notice that the two "younger siblings" have a temper. It's OK to become angry sometimes, it's healthy or one will explode.

:)

Don and Mikey are basically two of the most patient cartoon characters I've ever encountered. That's just me.

Usually, when Donatello gets mad he has a good and understandable reason, because he's being overworked, demanded too much of, or fights/tempers in the family that are for not-so-good reasons are happening.

Mikey's temper is more inward. He's very reflective. See Volume 1 #11, where he spends his time punching holes in Casey's barn.
Although he does take a moment to shout "Shut up!" at Renet in Tales Volume 1 #7.

Don's usually reflective as well, but he has a dark side when pushed. See Volume 1 #49 where he knocks a drunken Casey into a river, and Volume 4 #9, where he kills Baxter in cold blood.

Comments directed at Mirage versions only.

Donnie's temper is not explosive. However, when he gets peeved, he lets it be known. He manages to state it in a way that is neither explosive nor sarcastic.

Mikey is very easygoing. It is hard to get on his nerves. But once you do- such as depriving him of pizza- he will show that he is upset. It is loud, but nowhere near the exploding bomb that Raph is.

I would hesitate to say that he isn't sarcastic. NT Don in particular can be pretty snarky when he is pissed off. Actually out of all the Don's, I would say NT Don is the most snotty about it when he is angry. Any one who watched the first half of BTTS knows what I'm talking about. He might not explode like Leo or Raph but he ushaully is pretty damn snide when he is ticked off.

What I find interesting about NT Don is that, out of all the turtles, when Don is pissy or mad, no one really messes with him and respects he is not happy and gives him his space. Leo, Raph, possiably Mikey would get hounded or called out on it a bit before they are left alone.

...are we talking about New Toon Mikey here or Old Toon? :ohwell:

...are we talking about New Toon Mikey here or Old Toon? :ohwell:Sounds like the old toon. But that's one of my pet peeves. When people discuss the Turtles' personalities it's almost essential to specify what universe you're talking about, since they vary so much. Just compare Mirage Raphael to old toon Rapheal, or new toon Mike to any other version.

wow, just what did Renent say to warrant that kind of responce? :-?

To be comepletely honest 4KIDS Mikey's lack of temper irritates me. He comes across as a total doormat alot of the times. I'm not saying I want to see Mikey freak out and threaten to kill every one or anything, but really...standing up for your self once in while would be nice. I kind of hate every one taking it upon them self to slap Mikey all the time. I know he asks for it, but it would balance things out if once in a while he cussed some one out for smacking him. I don't know. :ohwell:

Mikey threatening to kill everyone? That would be one awesome plot. Is he brainwashed or something. Oh, yeah!

wow, just what did Renent say to warrant that kind of responce? :-?Her babbling on about how great it was to see them again. Although, on second read I think it may have been Don. Honestly, it's hard to tell, since their weapons are out of view in that scene.

Oh! That would have been a great scene, then. Tssskkk....It's Don. I'm stupid and didn't realize that she says his name in the next panel.

But it still applies to this thread.

I think Don would naturally be irritable at times, since he's usually the smartest one in the room. In all seriousness, when you're surrounded by people who just can't understand things the way you do, but they *think* they do, or even better they think *you're* the one who has a screw loose, well... smart people are naturally a little cranky. And who can blame 'em? Doesn't make one an ass, though.

It's hard to imagine the rest of the turtles ever being all that angry when there's Raphael who is pissed off all the time.

When it comes to Donatello, the first example of being in a bad mood that I thought of was in Secret of the Ooze when he couldn't deal with the possibility that there wasn't more to the turtles' origin.

For Michelangelo, the first thing that comes to mind is that issue of Tales about his cat being hit by a car. That was a case where it was understandable, like when he saw some weird lady holding his cat.

you know what this thread has made me realize? Mikey never had his "angry" season like every one else. :o

Raphael after having years of being established as a sarcastic jokster in mainstream media due to the orginal toon, finally got his true hotheaded nature and remorse at his violent tendacies finally adressed in the new toon. Seasons one and two seemed to really focus on Raph's anger and rebellious nature with Leo before finally maturing him.

Leo got his completely gut wrenching angry angstfest in season four where he felt responciable for nearly getting every one killed in season three; acting more harsh and brutal toward enemies and his friends and family. And showing his anguish of not being able to be there for his family.

And finally in BTTS Don going comepletely angsty/angry and pained at not being able to protect Splinter, and going into over drive and becoming cold and neglectful of his brothers.

Basically each turtle got their turn at showing raw anger except Mikey. :-?

Wasn't Mikey angry when he found out someone else took the Turtle Titan name in Fast Forward...? Or when Dark Mikey insulted Justice Force comics?

I'm not sure you can really call that anger, it was more like jealousy and being mightly annoyed than actual anger IMO. And also, it was way to childish for me to really aknowledge it as anything but petty jealousy. Not a proud moment for Mikey, I'm afraid, or his fans. :(

The thing is with NT Mikey, is that he is quick to take offence, resulting in childish and petty jealousy or whining, but not easily angered where he shows a diffrent/deeper side to his character. I mean we have all seen him intense while in battle (Grudge Match) and even pissed off in a group setting with the other turtles when some villan comes and blows their home to bits for the 15th time. But not really when it comes to things affecting him negetively personly. NGH1066 brings up a good point. Mikey is the only one who didn't get his freak out season or story arc, like the other turtles where something bothers him enough that it gives him pause.

you know since I've been watching the 80's toon I've noticed that Mike is stapled as the "party dude", which he is, but I've also noticed that he also takes things to heart alot to. I think he is laid back but I noticed he does get get angry quite bit too.

In this episode "What's Michelangelo good for" he gets pretty upset, More upset I think than I've seen him so far in the series. he really took it personally I can't see the new show ever reaching such a deep level with Mikey. Such because a show is visually darker, doesn't mean it's any deeper.

is this where he beats up some elderly homeless woman? :o I think thats gotta be the most shocking thing any of the turtles have done. You don't beat on homeless old ladies! :(

you know whats scarey about Donatello in the 80's toon that I've noticed? He could be tottally evil. :o I mean this guy is actually scarey when he gets pissed. NT Don is pissy and all but he's more like "grr...go away" when he's mad.

I rewatched this episode where Don makes a clone of himself, and his evil twin was a straight up prick! I mean what got me is that this was essenticially Donatello, and I was amazed by how casually evil he could be. If Donatello ever flipped his lid every one would be in deep shiznit. :o

I always like hearing peoples opinions as they watch this stuff for the first time.

Also, yes, Donatello clearly harbors a deep hatred for humanity.

to be honest, I'm dragging my feet with season five. I'm not even watching it in order. So far I'm not finding this season particularly entertaining. So far the only episodes that i've seen of this season that hasn't bored me is the one where Shredder's brother shows up and Donatello's clone. Though I do have alot more of season five to see so my opinion might change. And, actually...I'm getting to the point where I think they should ditch the technodrome all together since it never seems to work any way.

Season four was enjoyable I think, it certainly made me laugh in several episodes, even though I can tell that their is serious shift in story telling in season four, but it makes me laugh. I don't mind the one shot scienctists but I wish some of them showed up more than just once.

Although to mention something that is slightly more on topic here, I've noticed that Donatello's disgusted attitude toward humanity is pretty amazing. I rather like that twist about him. Don and Baxter should team up. 8)
