Microbots: From old series or comics?

Hey guys,
If you've seen the preview for ep 5 you've seen the microbots that can duplicate each other and build large machines. When I first saw this I immiedately remember how Dregg had microbots that did the exact same thing in the old cartoon. Is this from the old cartoon or was it somewhere in the comics?

Thought so... just checking. Something that only Dregg had doesn't deserve to come into the new series anyway. :D

The Nanobots are in the current Volume (4) in the Mirage series. Although their origin lies in Volume 2.
