OK Guys and Gals. The new TMNT has created a lot of traffic and newbies to thetechnodrome.com.
This is the Official FAQ Thread
We will try and answer common questions here.
I'll add to this post as people post new information.
1) Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, and the Technodrome are not in the new cartoon, nor will they ever be.
2) There is no Channel 6 News, no Vernon, no Irma, Burne Thompson, etc. April O'Neil is not a news reporter in the new series.
3) There will also be no Zach, Neutrinos, or Rock Soldiers in the new series.
4) In the original comic put out by Mirage, all four turtles wear RED bandanas.
5) If you downloaded a TMNT episode online and you get only audio when playing it, download and install the latest DivX codec (http://www.divx.com/divx/).

Good idea, DarthRaph. To do this, though, I would recommend editing your first post in this thread and adding any suggestions that you think are appropriate to it. That way, people won't get confused by the joke suggestions, and they also won't have to read through all the posts to see the entire FAQ. BTW, you can also use the questions posted in this thread:

That isn't true. IF you look at the episode synopsis on the www.ninjaturtle.com page, there is something regarding this around episode 21.

2) You obviously have NEVER seen "Slash: The Evil Turtle From Dimension X" in the old cartoon. What a dippo...

I said not many mutants. DIdn't say none at all.
I've heard about some other rumors and stuff but I mean the new show doesn't have a new mutant for the turtles to fight or team up with in every episode. They are more unique this time around.

hey, just my two cents, but Slash, was from Dimension X, he was in the episode "Slash, the evil turtle from Dimension X" I recorded the episode many years ago. He was Bebop's pet turtle. Then, in order to not do work, they turned him into a mutant. Now, where Bebop got the turtle from is a question... Anyway, here's a n00b question: what plans are there for DVDs of the original cartoon?

I don't believe there are any plans for DVDs of the original cartoon. Maybe if the new one gets popular enough and sells enough stuff.

There are some dvd's I've heard about coming out later this year. As to what is actually on them is anyones guess. We're hoping for season box sets or something along those lines and not just mix and match episodes.

I do think there are plans for DVDs of the TMNT cartoon. Heck, there are less popular shows that have their DVD collections, why not the old TMNT cartoons? I certainly hope you are wrong. Even if 2003 isn't the year for the old TMNT to come out on DVD, it will in the future. I believe, I believe, I believe!!! :tpizza:

Actually, Baxter will probably return in his machine form, like in the color series (they make mention of this in the new TMNT comics)... Also, for the FAQ, you could have "Splinter is a rat, formally owned by Himato Yoshi, not Himato Yoshi turned into a rat." Oh, and that choco puffs are not the most ideal of pizza toppings. I suggest cocoa pebbles or cocoa krispies... Something like that. :tpizza:

Also another thing to add is that Oroko Saki is in the traditional 'family name first' style of japanese naming. Meaning that Oroko is his last name, and in the traditional american style, he would be Saki Oroko.
And things are a little different in the origins of the movie and comics. See, Saki did NOT compete with Yoshi... It was his brother, Oroko Nagi that was Yoshi's rival. Yoshi killed Nagi when he caught Nagi beating Teng Shin for being in love with Yoshi. Saki vowed vengance when the clan exiled Yoshi instead of killing him. Also, Saki killed Yoshi with his gauntlet, not with a katana, as in the film. Splineter never clawed his face or lost part of his ear.

Q: Is it true that Shredder is dead in the Mirage Comic continuity?
A: Yes, Shredder is dead in the Mirage comics. He was actually "killed" on two occasions.
He was first killed in Vol. 1 #1 where he was beaten, stabbed by Leonardo, knocked off a building, and blown to pieces by his own thermite grenade. The Foot then discovered his pieces and used worm colonies to clone him and bring him back to life. His second and final death was in "Return to New York" Vol. 1 #19-21, where the TMNT do just that and attack the Foot secret headquaters. Leonardo eventually finds the Shredder and battles him in a one on one sword fight. The fight ends when Leonardo cuts off Shredder's head. The TMNT then burn Shredder's remains.
Although Shredder's legacy had haunted the TMNT after his death. The TMNT battled revenge hungry Foot Ninjas in Tales of the TMNT Vol. 1 #6; Vol. 1 #4, 44, 45, and culminated in the epic "City At War" 50-62. The Foot under new leadership since City At War, also currently appear in Vol. 4.
*Just a note, my descriptions of the above events do not do them justice. If you have not read the Mirage comics, then you are missing out on some fantastic stories.

The new cartoon is not a remake of the old one! They are two separate series that just happen to use the same comic book as source material. They also have different approaches and Krang, Rocksteady, and Bebop, while fine for the old show, just wouldn't fit the new show. Sorry.

Here's one for the people that are driving me nutz.
Q: Does Fox own the new TMNT?
A: NO, Fox does not own the new series. The series is a collabartion between Mirage and 4kids Entertainment. In fact Fox doesn't even own the Fox Box. They auctioned off the satruday morning block time after Disney bought Fox Kids Communications and Saban. They sold the block and have no control over it other than the ability to take it off the air when they please (and they sure do like to do that for sports). The Fox Box in fact also airs on UPN and other stations. It's almost a wonder why it is called the Fox Box. So basically if TMNT were to move to say Kids WB or Cartoon Network it would be entirely at 4kids descresion.

This post comes from a TMNT thread (http://www.paradigm-city.com/forums/thread.php?threadid=2196&sid=) at Paradigm City. I thought it would be really useful for the FAQs section, since it attempts to sum-up the whole TMNT experience in a heartbeat! :)
Here's a guide to the TMNT francise:
The BEST site you can go to learn abut the TMNT is their official site at http://www.ninjaturtles.com/ most of these links are from that site and are just the tip of the iceburg! There's alot more to learn about the TMNT that can be read at that site. (it's MORE than just that cool cartoon from the 1980's)
Also, the best place to DISCUSS TMNT is The Technodrome (http://www.thetechnodrome.com/forums/) run by the very same Krang and Shredder that run Paradigm City!
(1984-1993) The Original! Mirage Comics:TMNT Volume #1
This was an indepandant comic-book created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. It was published from 1984 to 1993 and was quite adult. They called their new little comics-company Mirage Studios! The word "Mirage" often refers to the original comic in the TMNT fandom.
It was basically a storyline about revenge. Shredder (a.k.a. Oroku Saki) killed Hamato Yoshi to avenge his Brother: Oroku Nagi. Yoshi's pet Rat: Splinter raised the Turtles to kill Shredder and avenge Yoshi. The Turtles DID kill Shredder only to have the Foot clan swear revenge on THEM! Eventually this boils down to the Epic Conclusion story called "City At War" which ends with the TMNT making peace with the Foot Clan!
http://www.ninjaturtles.com/comics/mirage/mirage.htm
(1987-1996) TMNT: The Old Cartoon
This was an alternate Universe Version of The TMNT for kids. It had some interesting ideas on it's own. It's the show most people are familiar with.
This was kind of a "Super-Hero" take on the story. Shredder teamed up with an evil alien brain named Krang (sound familiar), and with the combination of Shredder's Ninjutsu and Krang's technology they tried to take over the world only to again and again be twarted by the TMNT!
http://www.ninjaturtles.com/cartoon/synopses.htm
(1988-1995) Archie Comics: TMNT Adventures
This comic started out based on the old cartoon but soon diverged and became more like the original comics. Sort of a hybrid, actually.
http://www.ninjaturtles.com/comics/archie/archie.htm
(1990) TMNT: the Movie
This was the first TMNT Movie and was quite well based on the Mirage Comics.
The Turtles meet April and encounter a secret criminal organization called the Foot that trains it's members (mostly teen runaways) in ninja stealth and combat! Things heat up as it's leader, the Shredder, turns out to be Oroku Saki, who murdered Splinter's master Yoshi 15 years ago!!!
http://www.ninjaturtles.com/movies/movie1.htm
(1991) TMNT: Movie 2: The secret of the Ooze
This was the sequel to the first movie, that tried to combine the early episodes of the old cartoon with issues 4-7 of the original comics. This movie tends to please children but disappoint adults.
Professor Jordan Perry at TGRI (known as TCRI in the comics) is finally disposing of the canisters of ooze that used to be buried there. Splinter recognizes TGRI as the logo on the can of ooze that mutated them. Unfortunately, Shredder finds the ooze and Mutates a Wolf and Snapping Turtle into monsters named Tokka and Rahzar! Can the TMNT stop them and find out their origin?
http://www.ninjaturtles.com/movies/movie2.htm
(1993) TMNT Movie 3: A feudal Fable
This movie was not very successful and was when TMNT fandom was starting to decline. I personally don't like this one.
The TMNT go back in time to feudal Japan and stop a war between to rival factions(one side corrupted by English traders). Mikey falls in love with the rebel leader, tries to stay in the past, realizes his home is in the present. They all go back. I puke. The End!
http://www.ninjaturtles.com/movies/movie3.htm
(1993-1994) Mirage Comics: TMNT Volume #2
This was a color series taking place one year after Volume #1. Two bad it only lasted two years! :(
The Villian of this series is Baxter Stockman, a mad scientist the TMNT encountered in Volume #1 but now he's a hulking cyborg/mech!!! The battle with baxter eventually takes them to a secret organization called D.A.R.P.A.!!!
http://www.ninjaturtles.com/comics/mirage/volume02/mirage.htm
(1996-1999) Image Comics: TMNT Volume #3
Eastman and Laird stopped making the comics and let this no-talent-hack at Image named Erik Larson take over for a few years. He kinda screwed everything up so Laird decided to reject his changes in Volume #4. Larson's been a whining crying baby about it ever since!
Basically, Raph loses an Eye, Don dies and comes cack as a cyborg, Splinter turns into an insane mutant bat, Leo loses an arm. But, on the plus side Mike got a girl and Raph became the new Shredder and led the foot clan. This stands as the most f**k*d-up TMNT series EVER!
http://www.ninjaturtles.com/comics/image/image.htm
(1997) Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation
This was a crappy Live-action TV show made by saban that was more like Power Rangers than TMNT. They even added a pointless much-hated female Ninja Turtle named Venus!
The Turtles met Venus and had lot's of goofy adventures protecting the world from Dragon-Lord! A magic Dragon King from another dimension that I consider the ONLY redeeming factor this show had!
http://www.ninjaturtles.com/next/nextindx.htm
(2001-Current) Mirage Comics: TMNT Volume #4
This is the continuation of Volumes #1 and #2, (Thankfully) Completely ignoring Volume Three!!! :D. It's made by Peter Laird and his right-hand-man Jim Lawson, and is drawn with kind of an odd Tim Burton/Picasso kind of style to it
So far, the Turtles are now in their 30s and are starting to feel a little too old for the whole Warrior thing. A new weird development is that Aliens have revealed them selves to mankind, thus allowing many weird creatures (like mutant Turtles) to walk the earth freely. Don seems to be getting a little eccentric. April just recovered from an illness caused by Baxter's nanobots. And Splinter has recenly died of old age :(. These issues should be availble at any comic-shop now.
http://www.ninjaturtles.com/comics/mirage/volume04/mirage.htm
(2003-Current) TMNT: The new Cartoon
This is a new animated series on Fox saturday mornings. It is loosely based on Volumes #1 and #2 of the original comics. Some people are calling it the best TMNT yet! It's drawn in a sort of cross between anime and Michael Dooney's style (Dooney is an artist that works on the comic).
So far, the Turtles Defeated Shredder (who survived his own decapitation, and may not be human) And, are now looking for the Missing Splinter inside the TCRI building, tune in this Satrurday to see how that goes ;)

This comic-book by Peter David and LeSean is a spin-off of the new cartoon. Unfortunately, I haven't read this one yet, so, I know next-to-nothing about it's story. But it's got some GREAT artwork!

Personally I'm of the opinion that MOST of the early Image stable were hacks. Just a bunch of arrogant pencillers trying to start their own comic book company, producing pin-up books with word balloons slapped on em to pass for a "story", and they couldn't even ship THAT on time. I especially always hated Spawn. It looked like Todd McFarlane took all his old Spider-Man art, drew chains and a cape on it, and created a new character. I don't understand why everyone thinks the guy's so damn talented. "Wow, his Spider-Man was amazing! He drew his eyes bigger! He contorted him into all these cool swinging poses where it looks like Spidey's trying to sniff his own butt!" Sorry, I'll pass, thanks.
So yeah I was not surprised at all that the Image TMNT book stunk like a senior citizen's bedpan.

Correct me if I'm wrong, the new TMNT is almost straight from the comics right?

Yeah but Leatherhead was in the original comics anyways. Same with Casey Jones and Rat King, whenever they decide to use him. And well.. Usagi was always a Stan Sakai character that somehow guest starred in the TMNT cartoon (guess he was a good friend of E&L) so nothing's stoppin him from makin another guest appearance on this new cartoon.

It's true, early Spawn was garbage. But the story and art got noticeably better after McFarlane left the book to his crew. It's currently very interesting and more like the excellent HBO tv series.
As far as all of Image being hacks goes, ever read The Maxx by Sam Kieth? One of the most unique and involved books I've ever read. My personal favorite comic book.

I've not read this or anything, but i think the idea is kinda cool. Obviously not so cool that it should have been the official story continuation - glad the maker's overwrote it/ignored it, but it sounds cool in a sort of alternate vision or parralell universe type of way. Strangely, cos of the risks taken by this volume it could even be seen as a collectors item in a sort of "look how Crazy the Turtles get!". Also, from that link, i'd actually dare to say that i think the artwork is cool too (and i'm not saying that just cos the Spawn people were involved) - i genuienly think that from the preview pics i've seen.

I am new here, but I've read that this original post may not be true now? I just want to know if this has been brought up, and debunked yet?
If you don't want to know anymore, then don't click the link that follows this statement. Again though, I just got here and read the initial post, and was wondering if this has been posted already...

EDIT: Didn't notice it was an April Fools joke, lol. Ya tend to take those things more seriously when you read articles from MAY 1st, as opposed to April 1st.

Why is it TCRI instead of TGRI as the movie has it? Does it stand for something different? Is it no longer an acronym? I haven't seen all the episodes of the new series yet so maybe it's explained there, or in the comic... ^_^;

it was originally TCRI, but chagned to TGRI for the movie.
In the new series, they went back to the TCRI name.
And THAT was a good thing, I'll agree.

Here's one that's been answered quite a bit lately:
Why does Mikey use a grappling hook in the latter seasons of the original show and not at all in the Next Mutation?
Because censors decided that the nunchucks were too violent for a kids TV show. They always edited them out in the UK. Why they've decided to stick with them for the new show, I am not sure, but am glad about it.
Why was the UK version called Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles?
As with Nunchucks, the word "ninja" was considered inappropriate for kids Tv.

And he supposedly used tonfa in TNM.

The reason they switched Mikey's nunchakus into a grappling hook was that when children pretended to be the turtles, it was easy to make nunchakus. However, not many children know how to actually use them.
The nunchaku is capable of generating 800 pounds per square inch of pressure, more than enough to break a human bone. Children often attempted to mimic Mikey's movements and ended up hurting themselves or others.
About Leo's katanas, it is much harder for a child to make a real sword than to take two pieces of wood and some rope or chain to make a nunchaku. On top of that, many children understand the concept of "sharp" being "dangerous."
The weapon was not removed from the American shows because of the gang connection (like in Europe) but because of the simplicity of a child being able to hurt himself.
I believe that European viewers complained about getting censored and cut versions of the show, so to kill two birds with one stone the animators just switched Mikey's weapon to the grappling hook and they did not have to worry about the storyline suffering from miscuts.
About The Next Mutation, Mikey did not use the Tonfa to get around censors but because easier to make it look like you know how to use a tonfa than a nunchaku. The show did not have the same budget as the movies so they were not able to get people who actually knew how to use nunchakus for fight scenes.

Here's one we've seen a lot of flame wars start over. I emailed Dan Berger to find out whether or not the Next Mutation followed the movie timeline. Here's what he had to say:
Howdy Zach,
> Several fellow TMNT fans and I were curious as to whether or not the
> Next Mutation was supposed to have followed the movie story line. I
> thought that it was, given that the subway set was used and the
> remarks Shredder made about Splinter's ear being sliced, but was just
> curious on what was official on that.
The effort was made to use elements from past TMNT projects to give the
show a sense of history amidst all the new developments.
Thanks for writing!
Cheers!

You know, I may have said this before and I'm sure nobody ever cared to consider it. I like to think that TNM was an alternate storyline. A "What If" type of show. I didn't consider it part of continuity at all. I even joked once that the entire series was the turtles' shot at a reality series.
Well, that's just my opinion.

so why wasn't Donatello's boa staff replaced as well in the USA. I mean I would think that finding a long stick and beating the hell out of your playmates while pretending to be the turtles would be a lot eaisioer to do than make nunchukes?
And the tonfa sticks that Michaelangelo had in the TNM really made me happy for some reason. I thought they where way better than a crappy grappling hook. I was so pissed when with the grappling hook. Is that even really a weapon at all. I don't even remember how he used them and how efective they where.

not really, but its more of a ninja accessory than a trash can which they used quite a bit. and he just took it and threw it at the bad guys and lassoed them and they were just as effective as using the trash cans, lmao(yes most of this is in a sarcastic tone lol)

You know I think the idea of a live action TMNT tv show really wasn't too bad of an idea. They just tried to take it in a totally stupid direction. And doing moves with nunchaku isn't all that difficult, (well at least to make it look good) you can have a fairly decent set of moves that work well for a tv show (with takes and what not) in a few months training, especially if you've worked with other weapons before. Now before I get flamed. I'm not saying using Nunchaku is EASY, I'm just saying that to use it for some flashy little moves here and there accompanied with the normal editing of a tv show, wouldn't be that difficult to make seem believable.

I hated the removings of the nunchakus in the TMNT cartoon. All the TMNT used grappling hooks, so Michaelangelo stopped using his personal weapon. From season 3/season 4, he seldom used the nunchakus and from season 5 (i think) they were removed.
