View Full Version : What voices do you imagine when you read the various TMNT series?

When I read the Archie series, I imagine the Turtles/Splinter all with their original toon voices, including Shredder/Krang and everyone else who appeared in the old toon.

When I read Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 4, Tales V.1, Tales V.2, and all the Mirage specials, I tend to imagine them with a mix of their Movie and/or 2k3 voices interchangeably.

With Image, the story is overall more depressing and cynical, so I have Mike drop the surfer voice, Don talk with a more computerized voice, and Raph with a psycho voice.

When I read Archie, I imagine the old toon voices.

When I read Mirage, it's a bit more of a mix. Raph I imagine close to his 1990 movie voice. Mike I switch off between old toon and 1990 movie (this version is far too laid back for the new toon voice). Don has his new toon voice, as does Leo.

Ditto for the Image series.

I blanket them these days with the following voices:

Turtles - 2007
Splinter - 80's/90's
Shredder - Movies

By default, the Turtles always sound like the OT Turtles in my head from the first couple seasons (before Leo's voice got a higher pitch to it). Sometimes Raph will sound like 2k3 Raph, though.

Splinter usually sounds like Mako's voice for Splinter.

The Turtles usually sound like the voices from the first movie. Splinter, I usually hear the old toon voice. Or Pat Morita.

"Remember, only one of these turtles is played by Corey Feldman!"

Mirage
Leo: TMNT
Don: SotO
Mike: I can't picture any voice when he speaks. I only read it.
Raph: combination of NT and 1st movie
Splinter: 1st movie
Shredder: NT
April: SotO
Casey: 1st movie

Archie
All OT. Unfortunately I haven't read the Image series yet.

I hear them more or less as they sound in the current cartoon. Though I think Mike should sound a bit less goofballish.

Archie - OT
Mirage - NT or Movies, sometimes a mix

I don't hear much of any of their cartoon dialect. I don't like to think of them talking like the cartoons. I tend to create my own personal voices.

Leo and Mike sound pretty much the same to me.
Raph talks kind of slow and deeper.
I hear Don talking the same way I do. :ohwell: strange.

I never hear any accent though, even though they are New Yorkers.

Just read tales 56 yesterday and I had trouble reading it without hearing Hun's voice from the 2k3 series. Mirage Hun has a much more powerful presence IMO and so I tried to delelope a new sound for him. It took a few pages for me to find my own voice for Hun.
Then when Casey stabs Hun in the throat, we get black text bubbles with white letters! (very cool btw). Reading the black bubbles sounded to me a bit like Christian bale when he does batman's voice. Or something like that.

1987 cartoon when I read Archie and UK Hero Turtles. I don't read Mirage, more than those on the TMNT site, and then I imagined more like the movies. I didn't Dreamwave, but would imagine that with the 2003 cartoon voices.

Yeah, that's about what I had in my mind too. I think the original Hun voice is hard to divorce from the visual, so when X event happens and the black bubbles come in it's all "SWEAR TO ME!" in my mind

When I read the Mirage comics, I tend to hear the ninja turtles sound alot like they did in the new 2007 movie. ...Minus Mikey however. Instead of sounding like a dork, as he did in the new movie, I imagin Mirage Mikey sounding like the Mikey of the original 80s tv series. Only difference is that he doesn't have the surfer accent. Just the tone.

Splinter, I usually hear the old toon voice. Or Pat Morita.

"Remember, only one of these turtles is played by Corey Feldman!"

haha! I too actually have Mirage Splinter sounding like Mr Miyagi in my mind when I read the comics!

Talkin' Mirage only here, because that's all I've read (most of vol. 1 up to issue 30, and scattered issues of Tales II). I'll hit all the major characters, and a few important supporting ones:

Leo- 2007 movie

Don- 2007 movie

Raph- 2007 movie

Mike- Having finally become acquainted with his Mirage incarnation, I can honestly say that none of the previous versions (which all basically had a "surfer dude" accent to some degree) mesh with the character as he appears in the comics. If anything, I kind of imagine him sounding like me...not that that helps on a written forum

April- Maybe it's because of the way she's drawn in vol. 1, but I imagine her as having a mild New York accent, which none of her big/small screen counterparts had...maybe an extremely toned down version of Marissa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny...

Casey- Elias Koteas, case closed.

Splinter- 1990 movie...little gruffer maybe

Shredder- (Promise you won't laugh...) For whatever reason, I find myself imagining that Saki--while he speaks and understands English perfectly--chooses to speak exclusively in Japanese, and that his text bubbles are essentially subtitles. Of course that would mean the Turtles would have to understand Japanese...although I don't think that's too much of a stretch, particularly in Leo's case.

Triceratons- Very low, guttural, and otherworldly

Human feds- Tried my best to imagine a non-specifically foreign/alien accent for their speech

Fugitoid- Mr. Peabody crossed with C3P0...

Old Man River- Hal Holbrook doing his impression of Mark Twain (YouTube it)

for some reason, I create completely diffrent sounding voices in my head when I'm reading the comics, with the exception of Leo, to me he always sounds like NT Leo.

But I'm majorly supriced so many have said that they change the voice around for Mike's character in the comic in their head.

I imagine them all to sound like Bobcat Goldthwait.

A few more:

Mr. Marlin- Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood

The Rat King- Christopher Lambert...kinda looks like him too

Mr. Braunze- John Malkovich or Michael Chiklis

Hun (Mirage)- Dethklok anyone?

Leatherhead- Not nearly as deep as I'd initially envisioned

Karai- 2007 flick, albeit with a little more authority

Shadow (vol. 1 & 2)- The little "kick his ass" girl on Youtube :D

Nobody- Rorschach in costume, likely sports a hefty Mass. accent unmasked

Leo - 2007
Raph - 1990
Mike - 1990
Don - I make one up for him, but it's similar to 2k3.
Splinter - I try them all before I pick one I like for that particular issue.
Casey - I end up hearing 2k3, even though I don't really like that voice.
April - Plain female voice.

I have this interpretive disorder where my brain automatically makes all internal voices (or associated inaudible phonics) sound like Gilbert Gottfried. I see text and I know it's April but she still sounds like Gilbert Gottfried.

I tend toward:

Raph: 2007
Leo: 2007 / Old Toon Mix.
Mike: 2007 / 1990 Mix
Don: 2007

Splinter is always voiced by Mako. Just-- he is. He will never ever be anything but Mako now. Because Mako was awesome and I am so sad he died. :(

The 2007 CG movie really did a number on how I envisioned each of the characters sounding.

Kevin Clash's "Splinter" was amazing, but I really do prefer the vibrancy that Mako brought the role. He made Splinter sound less...I don't even know if I have the right word....but asthmatic? I can see Mikey freaking out about Splinter referring to his own death, because it really did sound like he had one foot in the grave already.

Mitchell Whitfield and James Arnold Taylor just nailed Don and Leo so well given what they had to work with.

Exceptions to the 2007 rule include Elias Koteas' Casey Jones and Robbie Rist's Mike.

I...haven't met a Raph I didn't just outright love, which I think works given his bipolar nature. If he's being sarcastic I hear Rob Paulson. Bitchy Raph sounds like Josh Pais, where as Sarcastic/Angry Raph is all either Nolan North. Evil bastard Raph? Frank Frankson.

Hell, sometimes I even hear Mike in Breckin Meyer and Raph in James Gandolfini or Dominick Lombardozzi, but...I think that might be my fandom/rp experience showing.

Archie - OT voices
Mirage - a mix of NT and 1st movie voices

Archie - I seem to keep switching back and forth between the OT voices and the NT voices. Sometimes within the same issue!

Mirage - Everyone sounds like the NT voices to me pretty consistently (though every once in a while Raph will sound like he did in the live-action movies, but usually he sounds NT to me). Some exceptions are Splinter, who I always picture with the OT voice, and Michelangelo, who I always picture with the voice he has here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCHzkbxawvI).

Figured I'd revive this thread to discuss Archie Future Turtles since no one mentioned them. I know logically they'd sound alot like their younger selves (which I hear as the OT cast), but that would confuse me so I go with:

Leo: 2k3
Raph: 2007
Don: SoTo
Mike: "Same as it Never Was"

And of course all the early Eastman and Laird stuff has Turtles Fover voices now :D

This is crazy I was just thinking about this earlier tonight & thought to make a thread of it... go figure.

Mirage/image I hear being same as it never was esque
Archie being the OT
Future archie turtles I get like OT voice actors in regular speaking voices (as hear in the special features of dvds)

When I read usagi I sometimes hear townsends rendition lol.

I always switch off depending on the story, don't know why I can't pick one.

Honestly, the only voice I hear when reading anything is my own 'internal' voice. I've always found it distracting to put other voices to text in my head.

Its the same when I read, for example, a Stephen King book, in which, quite frequently, a character will be thinking to themselves in their head in other people's voices. ie, if they feel they're about to do something their mother would disaprove of, they will 'hear' their mother's voice pipe up, "I always expected better of you, Danny." King himself has always said that his internal voices come to him in the form of loved ones/colleagues/people from his past. But the only voice I ever hear in my head is my own.

Same here. I don't think I would be able to give voices to something that is written. Never did.

Unless something clearly explains that a character has got a specific voice (like Hun), I would never think about it.

I have a habit of taking a voice from a particular film or animation of things and hearing that voice in my head as I read. For example, in every Batman comic I read, it will always be Kevin Conroy. For the turtles I think all the voices they've had have been perfect for that incarnation, but for whatever reason the voices I "hear" when I read the comics tend to be those from the 2k3 series. I was just curious to see if anyone else does this and who they hear if they do
