View Full Version : So far the Comic Con sucks in terms of TMNT news

I've been waiting weeks for this, and the only new information we've gotten out of Comic Con is how Season 7 will be released, and some more Playmates toys attempt at making a Mirage line and some more mini-figures.

Where is the announcement of what's going on with the 5th movie?

Where is the confirmation as to what's happening with the cartoon or the DTV that's apparently coming?

Where is the announcement of all the new comics and collected books we're apparently getting?

Where is the news on the Archie "Forever War" series, how many pages will it be? How far along is it?

Its sad that if this was intended to start the 25th anniversary stuff, they've done a poor job getting people excited over the future of the franchise.

We wouldn't be if they decided not to half-ass this whole thing, which is gonna end up tanking TMNT for a few years.

The easy answer is there is no news because there really is no news.

5th movie? Nothing. New Show? Zilch. New Trades? Who knows. The only thing we know for sure if that Forever War should be coming...maybe.,..eventually.

So then what is the real point of celebrating the 25th anniversary of the franchise if we're not getting anything major down the pipleline?

Sure, we get a new videogame, some more DVDs and toys...but where is the "big" announcement?

What is the future of TMNT if the cartoon goes off the air? If that happens only the Mirage comics are left.

Anniversaries is just an excuse for companies to cash in, best thing you can hope for is some cool re-release. I can't recall any amazing anniversary from any one company/franchise. Mirage is doing a good job, they aren't doing any worse than most companies in fact they are doing more.

All Mickey Mouse got was a Pez dispenser last year for his 80th.

Jester

Yes, but Mickey's so huge, just imagine what will happen on 100. 80's kinda a odd number where anniversaries are concerned. 25, 50, 75, 100 those are the big ones.

And here's the thing...

Playmates, Mirage, and 4Kids don't equal a quarter of Disney. Anything I could say on the matter, however, would be a rant on how Bob Igor is a bigger tool than Michael Eisner... and how no wonder Mike decided to have him as a replacement. He wanted someone who would do an even worse job than him as revenge.

But that said, yeah. We have no news. A fifth movie? Sure, if they were still on speaking terms with Imagi, and Imagi had the same leadership it had during the production of the first movie. Astroboy and Gatchaman look very cloudy as of this moment. A new season? Weren't we told multiple times that this is the last one, no question? The only concern I care about now is the Forever War and the DTV. And those are both eventuallies.

You guys have yet to mention any other company/franchise that has done a great anniversary Job. In truth Mirages celebration is the same if not a lot bigger than most companies.

Yes, Mirage is doing more. Certainly more than any other company has done with their 25th anniversary properties. If by more you mean they will be the only company who ran their property into the ground during their BIG 25th anniversary year.

I think the big disappointment is they hyped this 25th so much with the whole "Shellebration" stuff and not much has happened apart from normal news.

I'm not too bothered though, it's not like any of the "special events" would happen over here ;) (I hate to think how long it could be before getting the game or DTV)

Indeed. They should have never bothered to spend the money on the 25th anniversary, we've gotten almost NOTHING good out of it.

Season 7 would have likely had a BETTER release without this, and although I do like the old Playmates toys again, they are just re-releases.

NOTHING with the cartoon, NO new movie, and all the comics we're getting we would have gotten anyway without this.

Its pretty disgusting, actually, its almost like throwing away money.

News I heard from the Con just by asking and hitting panels:

-No official news about the next movie other then Mirage artists saying Peter is forever in meetings about a new film and Peter saying he is feeling pretty confident about the on going meetings and is hoping to have more solid news by SDCC.

-DVD box set and Blu Ray hits in August. Blu Ray DVD may have some special features that people have been wanting, its up to New Line though.

-There will be a bunch of re-releases of the original turtles comic and trades.

-New Super Smash Brothers style game looks awesome (the trailer they had on rotate on the convention floor uses the fully colored Raph vs Leo rough house fight from the TMNT DVD) and hits later this year.

-New DTV is scheduled to be finished up in June and they are trying to get it debuted at the SDCC. Look for new characters to meet old characters (that's all they would say). Its a big favorite amongst the 2K3 cast and crew.

-Keep your eye out for the Rat King for the 2K3 show.

This thing better be damn good if its taking them that long to complete it. The DTV was announced months ago so I thought that it would be near finish by now.

Production for these type of things takes time, especially if you want it to be good. Why rush it when they don't have to. SDCC is the perfect time to debut it so they might as well take that time to keep working on it.

I thought they were going straight into the DTV as soon as production on BttS wrapped up. It sounds to me like they just started.

But your right. Since this the last foreseeable TMNT project they should take as long as they want. And here's hoping the animation and writting is better than BttS's.

I don't know when they ended production on BttS but I got the impression they have been working on it for a while.

What is this DTV dvd? What could it possibly mean with the old meeting/mixing with the new? Not the two ierations of the TMNT meeting each other is it? If so what kind of story is for the 25th anniversary? Is it related to the 2k3 show or a one off on its own? I haven't really watched the 2k3 show and occasionally watched the old cartoon back in the day. I'm really confused by this bit about this DTV dvd.

You could say that if you want to give the benefit of the doubt.

However outside of even that, what else is the GB brand doing for its 25th that trounces the TMNT 25th celebration?

Not trying to compare, saying TMNT's is any better (a new season would make it awesome, cough Shredder Wars,) but just wondering what the two brands are doing in contrast to one another.

02-10-2009, 11:21 AM
Oh, that... Yeah, I'm thinking that was more of a 'greener grass' generalization. But, I'm a good bit less thrilled about the TMNT's anniversary efforts just because I hear more negativity about it. Of course, if I looked hard enough, the GB might seem equally ungrateful. :ohwell:

The pretty much have the same thing going as TMNT: dvds of the old cartoon, various new figures, a new video game, Blu-ray release, both are trying o get new movies off the ground. Its not that huge of a difference.

Mikey the Party Turtle

dvds of the old cartoon

The whole cartoon, with an exhaustive amount of bonus material to boot. Splitting TMNT season seven into four releases? C'mon, this isn't 2003.

various new figures

Which look a TON better than the ones Playmates are going to be putting out. There's also the Minimates, Kubricks, prop replicas...

a new video game

How many TMNT games have there been in past couple of years? Now compare that to the number of GB games that have come out in that same time frame.

Its not that huge of a difference.

The amount of effort being put in is what separates the two.

There's also the fact they have Bill Murray involved in all of this. That in of itself is an accomplishment to be reckoned with.

But hey! At least the TMNT 25th Anniversary will be better than Back to the Future's 25th Anniversary.

TristanHuwJones

The basic difference is that GB's have had NOTHING. There was EGB at the same time as Next Mutation, but that was it. Fans got completely ****ed over by 88mph when they essentially stole 50 from people who preordered the hardcover of the comic and refused to refund them when they failed to publish the book. The TMNT have had things going almost the whole time. The OT figures stopped around 1996 right? Then Next Mutation was 1997, then there was another small lull, but the comic came back, and then 2k3 started up. Then there are the games, books, movies, and everything else.

Ghostbusters had RGB, then nothing, then EGB, then nothing, and only now are we getting proper GB stuff, and it's all for the 25th Anniversary. There's the toys (which are all aimed at the hardcore collectors, based on the movies AND animated shows), the RGB DVD's being released in season sets to retail, the blu-ray releases, the games across all formats (written by and starring all core cast members -- INCLUDING Bill Murray), comics by IDW, and the likely announcement of a third movie.

When you compare what the GB fans are getting in for the 25th anniversary, compared to what the TMNT fans are getting, there's not too much difference on the surface. But now look at what GB fans have had UP UNTIL the 25th... THERE'S the difference. :)

Last re-release of the old figures was 1999 Trist so Turtles really never went away.

Thanks V! Problem with being an Aussie is we don't get a lot of the stuff you dudes do, especially with stuff like that (I woulda killed a man to get the MOTU anniversary reissues here...m-maybe...)! So there you have it.

I'll be flat out honest too, I think the effort that's gone into the GB stuff on the parts of the third parties involved goes beyond what a lot of them are doing for TMNT.

The Blu-Ray release for GB is going to be great, the game looks like it could be one of the best video game productions of 2009 and the figures coming are the most excited I've been about a toyline since I was 10. The RGB boxed set is probably the best thing I own on DVD. The effort Time Life put into that is ridiculous.

But again, Turtles has always been about the comics for me, though getting TMNT 1 on Blu-Ray and the Smash Bros. style game are both very, very cool things in my mind.

And you know what that difference is? You'll be able to buy the TMNT 25th anniversary stuff in stores, and not have to go to freaking Mattel.com to get the GB figures. Honestly, I think we're still making out like bandits here. Only problems I see is the cartoon's ending, the comic may end, and no fifth movie is in sight (thanks to Imagi).

GB is done, and has been done since the 90's. Other than a couple comics, the only thing GB fans can look forward to is maybe sorta kinda if the third movie actually happens... then we can sit back, and have them whine about how terrible it was, and how it doesn't hold up to the original.... kinda like what happened to Indiana Jones.

Too bad some shifty guy will buy them up all on the first day, and then sell them for 19 times their value. As ugly as these TMNT toys are, at least we know that we can get them really really cheap... cuz no one would want them! :trolleye:
