Yes. But mostly in the cyclical nature of children's cartoons. Reboot, restart, children stop buying the toys, wait another 5 years, repeat, reboot, start, etc. etc..

Ideally, at some point the (movie, television-as-a-mini-series) rights will get swooped up by someone that respects the source material and the TMNT could evolve into something more endearing in the mainstream... but it's a very difficult thing to put a timetable on.

Only if and when Mirage wants that to happen.

Uh, in another 20 years Peter Laird will be 74.

I think by then TMNT will be passed on to someone.

That could happen? So if that happens then ... the franchise will never die?

I DON'T GET IT!!!!!!

Can a franchise ever die?

Can a franchise ever die?

Yeah, happens all the time. Doesn't mean it can't come back eventually.

I meant permanently dead.

Even *IF* the franchise dies out, no more toons, comics, etc. it' the fans that keep it alive. We get creative, (no matter how warped & twisted some might be) WE keep it alive and...and sometimes fans revivie a franchise and it's reborn.
Now if only a fan was in the biz and took it to a new level creating an intelligent non-kiddie tv show (or a movie) with a QUALITY production and not treat it like a kiddie property!

Woo! 4,000th post!

Problem is.. if the TMNT do come back.. how old will we be then? I mean most of us are in our 30's now. Won't we all be too old to care about the Turtles by the time they have a third rising?

Most of us haven't been in the target demographic for TMNT for over a decade (only talking about the larger media here... comics today don't exist for children as they did a decade ago, it's strictly a collector's, non-newstand market now), even if it were to go for a more mature audience. Nonetheless, if they put out something that's more mature... I'm saying it would make for something that's more enduring without the need for this constant cycle of "Uh oh, another generation outgrew the TMNT again! Time to let it sleep and then repackage it for another generation of little kids in a few years!"

That some of us old, jaded fans might jump on board for the ride can only be the icing on the cake.

Why not? Read this:

But the question is, can TMNT become another Batman and Superman?

Mirage isn't DC or Marvel, they're a small independent comics company.

Hopefully in the next "Life" of TMNT either Playmates gets their butts in gear and deliver DECENT FIGURES fit for the 21st century or the license falls into more capable hands... (Toy Biz/Marvel Toys, dare I say Hasbro, Mattel?) Backed by a decent animated series, like the first season of the 2k3 toon. Hopefully a Decent Movie, closer to the comics.

I'm with Andrew. I have no doubt that the Turtles can continue to come back through a chain of repeated children's marketing endeavors, but if we want them to be an everpresent force like Batman or Superman they need to, like Batman and Superman, be public knowledge on multiple levels. People need to know that even though there's a kid's cartoon on the air that there are still Turtle comics out there, etc.

All of which have been able to maintain a consistent amount of popularity, with the occasional boom.

Ninja Turtles started off as a hot indy comic, became a phenomenon of a franchise for a few years, fizzled out when Power Rangers hit the scene, became obscure, then made a comeback although no where close to as popular as its prime.

I think the Ninja Turtles could last, but it's going to take some work. As a comic series, it could have some staying power if they tried to make it appeal to a wider audience. If Mirage is unable to do it on their own, maybe they should partner up with some companies when it comes to printing/distribution of trade paperbacks, things like that.

I'm not a fan of remakes, but maybe the movie series would need a complete reboot. If it meant giving the franchise a shot in the arm, I wouldn't mind a reboot.

I'd rather not go too analytical on the subject. Physically, TMNT as we know it may burn out again, but I think the franchise will last another 20 years as long as it dwells in the hearts minds of its fans. We really don't need another cartoon show, a new movie, or even a fresh comic book to get that sense of longevity. All we need is to remember and hold on to what we have of it.

And if we really feel a sense of drought in the well of the franchise, there's nothing preventing us from picking up a pen, pencil, and paper, or whipping out a keyboard and mouse and rejuvenating the world we've come to know and love throughout our years. Sure, it won't be licensed, but it'll exist, and with the help of places like this, it can be shared with others to eliminate the need for worrisome words like, "canon."

Keep the memory alive, and you keep hope alive.

Last strong no, will it come back eventually? Yeah it will. In time movie studios or networks will be tossing ideas around and some kid who grew up watching turtles will say "Hey remember the Ninja Turtles? I loved that as a kid let's bring that back."

I guess it could last for another 20, but it would mostly stick around because of the fans even if the franchise would die out again. It happens to a lot of series - it's around for a while, it leaves, but sometimes comes back possibly years later. It just depends on the success of future projects I suppose.

I wonder if tmnt dies it's likely that super hero franchises will die out to, like; superman, spiderman, batman etc. etc. If it one franchise that doesn't wade away i think it will be the disney universe(donald, mickey, goffy....):ohwell:

Personally, I'm hoping for the new fighting game to become enough of a success that the franchise can continue in the form of well-made video games with occasional DTVs and TPBs.

That's just the modest version, though. It'd be really cool if the comics were a huge success, too. But, that seems a lot less likely considering how they're distributed.

Weird thing about the Turtles is just how they go about things and don't just go balls-out with what's good.

Their comics are rare, black and white and hard to find. Plus, there's like a year gap between Volume 4 issues. Not much action and not enough familiar characters for those getting into it. They shoulda made the comics easier to find, on a monthly basis, and release some trades of Volume 1 and 2 issues to catch everyone up to speed.

The Dreamwave comics just HAD to waste time with the Turtles helpin kids in da hood instead of facing the Shredder and stuff. And just when they were FINALLY gonna have some adventure that actually involved TMNT stuff (Baxter, Mousers and the Turtlebot) it gets cancelled. Plue they were the only comics that were based on 2K3 and no other company picked it up.

The CGI movie was lackluster and not as bad-ass as it shoulda been. A weird-ass plot that had nothing to do with the Turtles, Don, Mike, Casey and to an extent Karai didn't do hardly anything, fighting wise or anything. I mean the only point to the whole movie was to see the Leo and Raph fight and even that coulda been a tad longer. Like it or not the first movie still shoulda had Shredder and the Foot and alot more action to garantuee a smash hit in theatures, leave the weird monster stuff for the sequel once you know for a fact that there wil be one. Or at least make Karai more of a prescence in the movie to make up for lack of Shredder.

The toys have become a barrage of stupid variants and a whole lot of missed opportunities. Where are the Tengu Shredder, True Mystics and Tribunal figures? Where was Future Bishop? Why haven't they released Cyber Shredder and the Cyber Foot yet when the BTTS show is almost over, and even then, still no plans for a Khan figure???

And now this videogame. Instead of going for more of a street fighter/tournament fighter type game that will either blow SF4 away or at least be able to compete.... they wanna make it kinda/sorta like Smash Brothers, and on a Wii? This is something that serously might or might not work, might turn out like TMNT Melee.... Why take the risk? Why not go for something a little more tried-and-true to garantuee a success when the Turtles are at a point that they can't afford another failure?

It just seems they want to take too much risks and stuff when the turtles are at the end of their ropes and need something truly awesome to keep them afloat. I mean, what's next? They're gonna make the DTV movie the plot of TMNT Overload or SuperQuest because they wanna take another risk?

The comics will probably always be around in some form or another, even if they go away for awhile, but I always wonder about TMNT's future on TV.

As much as I love the comics, I always love the cartoons and movies, and I'm always sad to see them go. I'm still somewhat hoping a 5th movie actually happens, maybe that way so the cartoon can get some new life breathed into it.

I wonder what happens when Peter is too old to continue the comic.

Golden tickets will be distributed in issues of Tales of the TMNT and action figures. Five lucky winners will get to tour Mirage Studios, and the winner will be the person who can avoid the ooze river, pizza flavored gum, golden egg laying turtles, etc. The winner will then be put in charge of Ninja Turtles, and may also get a glass technodrome module to ride around in.

What in god's name are you babbling about? Do you seriously TMNT is anything CLOSE to those franchises to represent the "beggining of the end" for any of them?

Whilst Batman and Spider-Man are going through their usual batch of "experimental dry patches", even they will be able to weed through their fiscal problems along with everything else from those two major companies. They are more iconic, more relatable, and more fracking profitable than the TMNT franchise

What a ridiculous assertion. Absolutely ridiculous.

Although I'd still appreciate new iterations of TMNT.
