View Full Version : Any seasons of the OT I should avoid?

Title of the thread says it all. I'm going to try to get all the seasons on DVD but are there any that I should avoid? Or more specifically which seasons do you think should take precedent?

I liked all the seasons, but some of the weaker eps are in the first half of Season 4. All of Season 4 is on a 40 episode boxset though, so even if there are some dull eps, there are plenty of good eps there in the second half to make up for it.

Unlike some people, I just view the old toon as good campy fun. I can pretty much enjoy mostly every episode because I know the show doesn't take itself seriously. I just go into it for a fun time, not to see which eps are better than others.

Skip season four. Just see a few important episodes like "Slash - Evil Turtle from Dimension X" via other means.

Do not skip season five, even though everyone will tell you too. Unless you like seeing your old toon without mutants.

Season six is also skipable.

Although I recommend getting to them all eventually.

That's pretty much half the entire series.

Some of you take this show way too seriously.

That's pretty where this thread is heading:lol:

I find season 2 boring. I fall asleep in a few of the episodes everytime. I'm still not sure how many crystals things there were. I swear there's like 4 or 5 peices even though they say there's 3. Am I crazy or does that they not add up?

Anyways, that's beside my point. Everyone has a different opinion on every season. I recommend just watching in order and getting your own opinion.

Some seasons are weaker than others. But they all have their good points. I would not avoid any of them to be honest.

Still not sure why they decided to produce the European Vacation ones. They should have at least come up with better episodes.

Not so much seasons for me... but I avoid episodes. Any episode where the turtles come in contact with alien technology, and the Shredder wants to take it for his own are stuff that wouldn't matter if you missed (they're all the same, and the aliens are always annoying)... Mutagen Monster was a totoal waste of a half hour...

And most of season 9 and 10. You know when Dregg shows up and they have the uncontrollable extreme mutations.... no thanks.

I'd say it's all a matter of personal opinions.
Me I'd go through the entire series and choose episodes I like and dislike.
Remember them and from time to time watch those I enjoyed.
I find myself going back to the later season episodes the most because I enjoy when the turtles are really in trouble and not up against push over villains.

I don't understand what everyone see's in the first season. You guys put it like its a whole different cartoon. While it is more serious in tone you guys make it seem like its god. Its really not ALL that much different from the rest of the show.

For the OP if you don't mind the wackiness at all you'll enjoy every episode. I mean i rarely watched the show as a kid so I had no nostalgia goggles while watching it for the first time as an adult and I loved it. i would also not suggest skipping any seasons. They all have great episodes I enjoy a lot. Season 2 still has some continuity with the eye of sarnath and great season premier and finale. Season 3 has a lot of filler but it has quite a few strong ones not to mention also a great premier/finale. Even though Season 4 didn't have a finale and had mostly fillers there are still plenty of good episodes.

I haven't gotten a chance to check out anything after that but counting people say Season 4 is the worst I think I'll enjoy them. Especially Season 7 seems to be highly regarded and S8-9 The Red Sky seasons also seem to be liked by most and only hated by the people who saw them in tv as a kid who didn't like that Shredder was gone, but I liked what I've seen from them and a lot of fans say they're the best since S1.

I liked the tone of what they were doing in those seasons... but replacing Shredder with a totally generic villain hell bent on destroying Earth and adding nonsense like the turtles mutating really hurt the show, I think. It's like the writers wrote season 9 like knew they were getting fired, and wanted to set up something totally convoluted for their replacement as some sort of revenge.

Lord Dregg himself was fine, my only problem was those last two seasons got rid of all the other villains.

No Leatherhead, no Rat King, no Baxter Stockman, all those other villains never got to appear one last time.

At least Shredder/Krang got that last 3-parter in Season 10, which was a decent sendoff for them.

If we count the original Season 1 as from Turtle Tracks to Shredder Gets Splintered, and Season 2 from then until the Technodrone crashes on the planetoid in Dimension X, then most of the episodes from the subsequent seasons are mediocre. There were some good ones, but an awful lot of bad ones, which seemed like they were just trying to add more villians so they could add more potential toys. True, the Technodrome couldn't stay at the Earth's core forever, but once the season switched from FOX to CBS it jumped the proverbial shark.

I understand that... but I never liked Dregg or Mung for that matter. I know they were trying a more serious approach, but Dreg comes off a bit too flat and stereotypical. And I think Cybercubed hit the nail on the head... he was the ONLY villain they really faced at that point, which made it lack variety. Other than the Blobfather, who worked for him anyway and was a one shot. I think the fact is yes, they wanted to do something different... but not something different from itself.

I do like the tone, and the main plot though... and I felt the last episode gave a lot of closure, and brought back up the Android body's growth mechanism which wasn't used since the fifth episode (that I know of).

But then again, I said most. There are a few really good episodes in those seasons... but it was like they were stalling for time in the rest of them.

Shredder, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady, Beserko, Rat King, Megavolt, Titanus, Amok, OverDrive, Raptor, Seizure, Magma, HighBeam, Krakus*for awhile*, Commander Korak, Medusa, The Slorr, Sleazebug, Karg, Chronos, Enforcer Carter, Doomquest, Draconus...

Those are all the villains who appear in Red Sky. The only season that doesn't have a bunch of them is the last one which is only Dregg and Shredder's gang. There was almost a new villain every episode before that so I don't think they did to bad for themselves considering the old toon recycled Krang and Shredder for entire seasons.

He probably means too much new and not enough old. I know Shredder and Krang were used alot in the older seasons, but it wouldn't have hurt to see some more familiar faces in there. Rat King and Casey Jones did get one final appearance in those Red Sky eps, but it wouldn't have hurt to see Leatherhead, Baxter, Slash, Mondo Gecko, the Frogs Groundchuck and Dirtbag come back too. I'm also surprised there were no Lord Dregg, Mung and Carter toys at the time.

I personally think that you could probably skip most of the cartoons after season 2. For awhile I kind of dredded picking up Season 3 dvds just because I felt they were too boring. Not only that, but even as a kid I disliked the foot tickling torture episode and that episode with the hamster statue. I would definitly pick up the regular season 7 episodes. It's great when they actually use all of the toy characters in the cartoon. I think that pretty much the only good episodes after season 2 are the episodes that feature villians other than Shredder. The Baxter episodes all have a cool arc, the leatherhead episodes are pretty good and so forth. When it's just the guys vs. the Shredder and Krang everything gets redundant. Most of the times the last couple episodes of a season are good with the Shredder like the Big trilogy at the end of season 3. I don't have a problem with campy stories, they just have keep me interested.

I use to think that when I was a kid I watched the cartoon all of the time. But now I only recognize a few episodes of season 3 and pretty much nothing after that. I think maybe I bailed on the show when X-men, batman, spiderman and all of that started to come out.

I think maybe the toys and archie comics held my interest in the turtles. Then when I got to college I looked them up on the net and found the whole mirage universe. It certainly wasn't the tv show. Being that I am obsessive compulsive I'll collect all of the DVD's regardless.

None of which hold up anymore, except maybe Batman: TAS. The original TMNT series is actually more fun than than any of the 1990s Marvel cartoons. Season Three isnt repetitive at all, it's one of the last times until season seven that the series had an edge to it

I would have to completely disagree with you. Spiderman may not hold up as well, but the xmen cartoon is still pretty good. It does a pretty good job of representing the source material. Every xmen show since has done nothing but try to make the stories generic and cut out anything closely resembling the comic. After season two most of the Turtles doesn't hold up at all. I can still continue to watch The first 78 of RGB (which came out around the same time) over and over again, but I've only watched season 3 through twice.

Also "maybe Batman TAS"? That cartoon was probably the best action cartoon ever made. There's no maybe about it.

If I wanted to watch a cartoon for it's goofiness I'd just watch my Looney Tunes DVD's.

I think this boils down to personal taste. Season one obviously, and season two and three are good. Season three had a concept that built up that was finally delivered in glory in the three part finale which served as a delicious pay off to all the "we need to get fuel for the technodrome" episodes.

Season four doesn't have the structure or edge season three has, but it still is fun and entertaining on several levels and funny IMHO. They really relied on the humour factor in season four. Season five is the weakest I believe. Six was ok, only the episodes on the first dvd disc are worth while to me.

Season seven is my favorite season. DON'T MISS THIS SEASON!!!

I liked Season 3 more than Season 2, mainly because they go with the crazy sci-fi plots.

You have to remember, the original cartoon isn't like the new one. This show was mainly about crazy sci-fi plots, fun campy moments, and the Turtles saving the day.

I figure fans more used to the 2k3 series may not like the old toon, but I guess its up to you.

I think you are watching this show the wrong way, you are expecting 2k3 and you aren't getting it and you are not going to get.

As someone who saw this show mostly without nostalgia glasses since I barely got to watch the show as a kid this show holds up extremely well. I had very low expectations when first watching it on dvd and not only did it hold up well I liked it very much.

Its not an inferior version of the 2k3 show, its a different take on the characters and so different you can't compare them at all. Its like comparing 60s Batman to The Dark Knight. I'd say give it another try with a different state of mind, you'll eventually "get" the humor of the show and you'll see the action and few story-arcs it has as the frosting on the cake.

More villains enter the roster, animation is better, and the humor is much more clever.

Season Two was really transitional, like they weren't sure how serious it should be, and so it suffered some wonky animation and poor writing. Everything has found its place by Season Three, and they begin to really advertise the toyline in the episodes, which gives it alot more variety.

Don't quit after Season Two. But if Season Three doesn't do it for you, then you should probably go ahead and stop watching it.

"Doesnt hold up to today's standards"...give me a fracking break. Why must everything live up to "today's standards"? You DO realize most animated series NOW are actually going back to the style of the 1980s and 1990s right?

The original series isnt the angsty, humourless current series, it's not the angsty, grim comics, it is what it is, a fun light-hearted psudo-serious self-detremental action/adventure series that was a cut above the rest and remains so, if you are capable of understanding what it is and what it's meant to be. If you can't understand that, or can't appreciate it, don't watch. That simple.

Pfft, are you seriously telling me most people would watch this show today and say “You know, this actually pretty good.” I understand your saying to enjoy stuff for what they are and what they are trying to do (trust me, I like a lot of stuff most would consider crappy) but season two just felt plain boring and dated. The same six or so pieces of music are played every episode, most of which are decent at best. Poor animation riddled with editing errors, lame action scenes, repetitive storytelling, uninspired presentation, and characters who do the same thing practically every episode. There were occasions where the above wasn’t so but those instances were few and far between. I can excuse the bad animation but there’s no excuse for the other stuff. Furthermore, I actually appreciate the wisecracks and self-aware humor but one positive in a sea of negatives can only get a show so far. You would have to be a toddler to get the most enjoyment out of season two. I’m not going to turn a blind eye to all the bad and lower my standards. When I judge movies and TV shows of the past they have to withstand the test of time. There are some that do and some that don’t and in my opinion this show doesn’t. I like light hearted fluff but not this kind.

Perhaps I’m jumping the gun because I only watched one season, but so far I’m disappointed and unimpressed. You think I'm being harsh and don't understand but I just call them as I see them.

Edit: Also, why are people assuming I'm comparing this show to 2k3? I've expressed my love for the show many times but I don't go around comparing other shows to it.

I don't know what shows you watch but most of the ones I watch, the new turtles included, use the same music pieces over and over again. Boring and dated? Well boring is a matter of opinion but dated? It's from the early 90's dude what do you expect?

Poor animation riddled with editing errors, lame action scenes, repetitive storytelling, uninspired presentation, and characters who do the same thing practically every episode.
Most old shows from that time looked like that dude. There's worse, you should see some of the famous stock animation repeat offenders. Characters do the same thing every episode? That's a complaint? You can break any show into that. Batman sucks all he does is fight bad guys every episode.

There were occasions where the above wasn’t so but those instances were few and far between. I can excuse the bad animation but there’s no excuse for the other stuff.
It wasn't an action series so what I'm seeing is someone from a different generation trying to apply his ADHD, anime, engery drink, video game murder logic to a classic TV series that existed in a time when that wasn't needed to entertainment.

Furthermore, I actually appreciate the wisecracks and self-aware humor but one positive in a sea of negatives can only get a show so far.
So you like the point of the show, it's a comedy.

You would have to be a toddler to get the most enjoyment out of season two. I’m not going to turn a blind eye to all the bad and lower my standards.
Or someone who grew up watching it, like umm probably 90% of the people who post here.

When I judge movies and TV shows of the past they have to withstand the test of time. There are some that do and some that don’t and in my opinion this show doesn’t. I like light hearted fluff but not this kind.
I can't give you crap for that. I hate Citizen Kane and people say it's the greatest movie ever made. Test of time is a good way to judge things but to be objective you need to judge things by putting yourself in that time period.

You can't enjoy this series because you didn't grow up with it. You tried watching it but your too old to like it. It's a series that hooks you as a kid and fills you up with enough good memories to make you continue watching it even as an adult. That's why all these adults like turtles. Maybe when you get older you'll understand this better.

Terror of Death, ignore all the bickering and just know that Season Two really is a bit of a black sheep in terms of animation and tone. It's personally one of my least favorite seasons, and maybe you'll find you have a similar opinion.

Pfft, are you seriously telling me most people would watch this show today and say “You know, this actually pretty good.”

Sure. A lot of people probably wouldn't take it too seriously, and find reasons to enjoy it.

There are tons of people who consider all cartoons to be silly anyway, so they probably wouldn't think much about the wacky aspects of the turtles cartoon.

It also comes down to everyone having different tastes. Someone else mentioned not liking Citizen Kane, while many consider it to be the best film of all time. Not everyone is going to see things the same way. Entertainment would be pretty boring if everyone shared the same taste so writers and producers only catered to a few wants.

I like the old cartoon series, because so much of it seems like a tribute to old sci-fi movies. I wish more new shows would take the same look at that old cheesy fun instead of always trying to be so serious.

Season two really is underrated and has a pretty good balance of psudo-serious and goofy.

And here I was thinking this show would be more than just a nostalgia trip. :ohwell:

That word is overrated and is used to blind people to diversity and just having fun with a series. Thanks to the half-wits at Toonzone and other elitist websites, you have to be serious or have that seriousness completly overshadow the comedy to have a "good" animated series. That is sheer bunk.

Exactly my thoughts. What made TMNT work before is that they knew exactly the show they were doing. Even when they got "darker" in the Red Sky episodes, they managed to stay light and having it work. Stuff that didn't even make it to animation kept the humor going (If anyone has read Jeffery Scott's book there's the original script for Blobfather...they cut a lot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Fill in the blank jokes.) I swear they even mocked the toy line by saying "Last one there is a plastic TMNT toy!" Unlike the newer series, this show didn't buckle under the pressure of focus groups, the toy company or network Standards and practices people, and try to become something it wasn't.

Sure, there was the occasional episode that was written sloppily because they had to get 65 episodes or so in a certain period of time ( Mutagen Monster , again)... but it didn't matter.

I say everything after the pilot is garbage. Worst...series....ever!

Some of you take this show way to seriously

Took the words out of my mouth.

Season two really is underrated and has a pretty good balance of psudo-serious and goofy.I find it's less of a balance, and more not knowing what its tone should be. Bebop and Rocksteady are very awkwardly written and acted in that season to reflect the transition.

Season three really knows where it's going with the greater comedy aspect and more varied supervillains. It actually makes me smirk or laugh on a consistant basis.

Either way, someone new to the series is looking for help, and surely you guys can agree that season three is more reflective of the series than season two. That's the standard to go by.

Took the words out of my mouth.

For the benefit of the perpetually ignorant, here's my response to those earlier examples of stupidity

People like you don't know when to distingush between what people find enjoyable and what there "obsessed" by. Quite frankly, one might even say the pedastel you put the modern series on is dubious at best.

Ah well, let the idiots bitch and moan, their series will never be as memorable or as definitive as the original was

I'm biased as i grew up on them, but i think seasons 1, 2, 3 are best of the bunch. I didn't see the other seasons until years later(2005), but although the background music was repetitive, it was much better than the new music that came out in season 4 & beyond, which sounded a lot more silly and forgettable, less 80's but forgettable. I think you shouldn't avoid season 4, it's not to avoid as it's the biggest season, but the whole obsession they had with mad professor villains just seemed lazy, and it's something that would've never fit in, in the first 3 seasons. So avoid the mad professor episodes, like i think the Donatello in time episode.

It just lost it's edge after season 3, but perhaps got a bit of it back by season 8, but it was a totally different show by then, and i've always liked the more light-hearted version of it. I would say season 2 did lack structure, but i liked the whole mini-series aspect of 3 or 4 episodes linked together, and it would've took the repetitiveness out of season 4, if they used that.

Season 3 is a fun season with a good variety of situations. Definetely some contenders here that could rival anything season 1 had, such as the 3 episode finale. If your not impressed, or enjoy that, then nothing will concerning the original TMNT!
