ZS: The only title I really collected to this day is the original TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).

NRAMA: The Eastman and Laird black and white series from Mirage?

ZS: Exactly. All that stuff, what’s the guy's name they always fought?

NRAMA: Shredder.

ZS: Right, I loved him! As I’ve told the story, I was a Heavy Metal fan (magazine, not music style). My mom got me a subscription to Heavy Metal when I was really young, not really knowing it was adult oriented, so I would read it and not let her know what was in it.

I’m sure if she saw some of the stuff that was in it, she would have been freaked out and appalled. She would just see the covers and say, “Oh Zach loves this stuff, this is perfect.” So it was hard for me to go to normal comics because I was a little bit broken and spoiled—when are they going to start &#@!ing or killing each other! So that kind took me out of comics for a little while.

It’s weird, TMNT was the one that kinda hooked me, you know? I guess at the time in high school, I was into renaissance artists and all that. And then a few years later, Dark Knight and Watchmen were really when I got back into comics — not heavily, but they were the ones that got me to believe again if you will. I think that’s a common story. But it’s mine as well.

NRAMA: How old were you when you were reading Heavy Metal and the Turtles?

ZS: I was in high school, so I guess Heavy Metal from about 14, maybe even before that, 13 to the present. Turtles were 17-18.

I’ve dabbled ever since with everything a little, all the Frank (Miller) stuff, all the Alan Moore stuff. Mostly you know, it’s an art thing. I do like art, so that’s why Heavy Metal was so influencing. I’m more like an art fan more than anything else.

The fact that he couldn't even remember his name is even worse...

Erm...he was listing it as a good memory. that's the only point i was making.

Poser fan of the year? Your kidding, right? Lets face it, it is not like turtles is something someone would use to earn points in geek circles these days.

Not suggesting he should be involved in a film (I hate over used slow motion) or that he'd want to. just that it was interesting.

Who the hell cares if he can't remember Shredder's name or the fact that he was only in four issues?

Someone get this guy a copy of City at War and a film crew.

Good point to make that people in high places appreciate TMNT, even if it's just enough that they can't remember but the most mundane of its trivia. I really wasn't complaining at you. At least you gave us something to discuss.

Of course. Zack Snyder loves TMNT and, if the right connections were made, he could make the kind of movie we're all wanting to see. Sure, its a pipe dream but there's hope...

...and almost half the responses are like, "F@#& him. He doesn't remember some stuff from when he was in High School that he hasn't kept up with since. He's a horrible person."

Oh, and I like 300 and Watchmen looks freakin' awesome.

Isn't that how it always is around here?
I honestly don't care if he remembers it doesnt take that much for a director to be handed the comics study them and make a film.
But I will agree with spitfire that 300 was a horrible film.
Watchmen does look like it could be decent though.

Well... here's how I look at this whole thing. If... and this is a giant hypothetical... he were to direct the next TMNT movie, he's a big enough director now that he'd have pull enough to make the film a comic book movie and not some kid and overprotective parent friendly extension of 2k3 like the last one turned out to be. Again, hypothetically.

Now, I don't see him directing a TMNT film at all. And how many other directors are true fans? Maybe Kevin Smith... and if he handled it right, it could be good... hypothetically. But no matter what happens, if a 5th movie ever ever gets made, it will be treated the same way as the last ones... a connection to a kid's show, and not a comic book. It will get no respect around Hollywood, since... again, it'll be "Oh yeah! It's some live action cartoon remake like the Flintstones, right?" And not a comic book movie.

And one more time for the folks at home playing a drinking game... Hypothetically.

At least he says he was a fan of the comics and no the cartoon. So if we get him to direct a movie, it'll at least be on the lines the first movie and hopefully nothing like SotO.

Synder is pretty mediocre. If there were to be another TMNT movie the last thing I would want to see would the type of movie Synder would make. I can't really stomach Slow-Motion wire fighting anymore, it just bores me to tears and it seems to be how he approaches his action scenes. It worked for 300 but his Queen subplot destoyed the point of that movie.

Watchmen is the greatest graphic novel of all time and its getting "Its alright" from the reviews. Not how it should be.

There was one scathing review but none of the ones I have read have been "WOW THIS MOVIE IS GREAT!" aside from places I generally don't trust like AICN. I'm willing to bet it'll be more along the lines of Wanted then say Spidey 1/2 and X-Men 2.

Well, I was speaking in terms of quality, not style. It will probably be like Sin City in terms of style, but so was The Spirit and that didn't work out so well. Zach Synder isn't, in my opinion, anywhere near as good a director as Robert Rodriguez and unlike Rodriguez he isn't working WITH the writer of the original comic, so I think the work will suffer for it. And with something like Watchmen that is so deep and has so much going on and is a really epic story but also a metatextual examination of Superhero comics in general, even losing the tiniest bit, like the Black Freighter tales, etc.

I'm absolutely not planning to see Watchmen in theaters, I might rent the big blu-ray release that will have the Black Freighter bits cut back into the movie.

I agree with you, and so does Alan Moore. LXG, V for Vendetta, and From Hell are mediocre to effing-terrible movies and he had this to say about him participating in movies based off his work

"If someone is going to kill one of my babies, I don't want to be the one holding the knife"

With Watchmen, while there are so many amazing facets to it, the sum is greater then the pieces. And for each element of the comic stripped away or toned down or pumped up for the average movie audience, that is a drastic decrease in the quality of the work. Losing the Black Freighter parallel hurts. Amped up Slow Motion fighting hurts. Rorscach using Bale's atrocious Batman voice hurts.

I'm happy for all the sales it brought the OGN, but sad that so many people are going to see this..thing instead of experiencing the graphic novel, which is truly a work of art.

He's made like 5 movies his entire career he's far from high profile. James Cameron is high profile. Steven Spielberg, Danny Boyle is now high profile, Chris Nolan is high profile...you get the point. This guys made two movies that anyone's heard of and neither of them were well received and only one of which was a box office success.

He was handed Watchmen, just like other no names are handed big projects like Terminator or remakes for movies. The studio doesn't care who makes it they just want it out in theaters. They want a nice looking trailer that will get people into the movies.

I'm sure Watchmen will do well, heck it might even be good, but that far from qualifies him as high profile. Also just for the hell of it I checked his filmography and he think he's doing like 5 movies next year. Either those are going to be really ****** movies or only one of them is going to make it into production.

You know its really annoying when people compain and say: Oh, such and such should never be into a movie, or That movie sucked when compared to the book. No Sh!t. It is pretty much impossible for a film to be better than the original source material, yet people will still complain when the film doesn't measure up. When you have spent the last 23 years appreciating a work like Watchmen, which is great, it is not likely that anything created after that, trying to be that is going to ever come close to the legendary and lofty expectations fans have for such material. I mean who cares who directed Watchmen because I'm not convinced Hollywood bigwigs would ever give a director enough control to get it as close to the graphic novel as possible. Its all about money and a direct interpretation of Watchmen would not make as much at the box office as some Hollywood version. That is reality, just accept it.

Steven Spielburg gets Final Cut on every one of his movies. Also, I liked his adaptation of Jaws much more then the novel.

Also, when you take something great that has a massive following and is one of the most praised and awarded pieces of art in its medium, and put out a dumbed-down slow-motion filled festival of mediocrity, people will and they SHOULD complain in addition to voting with their wallets. That is reality.

MaC, I agree that people can complain and they even probably should complain, but it will fall on deaf ears. That is because its all about the money. Oh and Speilberg has the power because he is also the producer as well. I also would bet that your first exposure to Jaws was the film and not the book, so in your mind nothing could compare, but this could not be the case with Watchmen as this will be the first film interpretation. You know as well as I do that many people who go see the film will later on read the book and say the book sucks. Hollywood knows that too, hence why we are going to get te dumbed down, slow motion, filled Zack Snyder directed film. Again, thats reality.

They could make any movie they wanted, as long as they advertised it properly it would sweep the box offices. People fall for trailers way to easily but it works. Trailer editing is actually a career option for editors, it's an acquired skill. They can take a movie that's about one thing and make it look completely different in the trailer. I've so many times seen a drama movie advertised as an action flick.

Case and point, watch this trailer:
iq49nkrNawM

Hard to believe the movie is really more like this:
The premise of the movie is Chuck is a "good luck charm" lover. That is, women will find their "one true love" after having sex with him. He then meets a girl who he thinks is his true love.
and has Dane Cook, not trying to love an absolute klutz, but not lose said klutz, because he is cursed to sleep with a girl and then lose her to the next man she's with.

A TRAILER CAN BE MADE TO MAKE ANY MOVIE LOOK TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT IT TRULY IS AND EVEN...GASP...LOOK GOOD. :P

I hope that isn't the case with Watchmen.

AS for this Snyder dude Dawn of the Dead was decent. 300 was decent as well, I rather enjoyed the Queen subplot cuz ya know a bunch of oiled up muscley dudes decapitaing people left and right in slow motion gets a bit tedious after a while. Niether were great. I'm hoping Watchmen will be good but it's a shame the Black Freighter bits won't be included in theaters, but it makes sense due to time constraints. I am a bit bothered by Ozymandias's and the Silk Spectre's costumes though, something resembling the comic would have been nice, although I could see why they went for that look on Silk Spectre.

Hollywood knows that too, hence why we are going to get te dumbed down, slow motion, filled Zack Snyder directed film. Again, thats reality.

Actually, I first read Jaws. I had a major shark obsession as a kid and my aunt was big into giving out books. I thought the subplot with Brody's wife and Richard Drefuss' character was unneeded and was really shocked at how much better the characters were portrayed in the movie. And the tone was vastly superior, where the novel was straight horror/drama the movie became horror and then later action/adventure during the shark hunt. But, I did see Jurassic Park before reading the book, and again I felt JP was superior because that sort of story lends itself really well to film.

And yeah, it is reality that some people will read the book and say "Well thats dumb" and sadly, thats the cycle we are in. Mindless action flicks are popular and make money. But I can't get annoyed or mad at folk voicing their opinion against the movie, because every little bit helps, though it may not show. That's not to say people pissing and moaning online will change anything. But that voice should always be present and should never just roll over.

Jester and Spitfire are also VERY VERY on point with the marketing thing. Go back and watch some of the trailers for Spidey 3 for instance. Those trailers had me so pumped for a dark and dramatic movie and I got to theaters and it was Parker dancing.

I dunno, I have the mind of never accepting something really weak when it could be so much better.

And @shuriken regarding the Queen subplot. The placing of her final scene really bothered me, because she spurs Sparta into action to go fight the Persians, but the entire point of that story is that those oiled up slow motion Warriors fought and died willingly to light a fire under the rear of Sparta and get them to war. But in the movie, the Queen handled that. So instead of fighting and getting slaughtered, the 300 could have just went home, met up with the massive spartan army, and won.

A disaster? It's an exciting movie. It accomplished what it set out to do, which was to be an action packed movie with interesting visuals. If you aren't a fan of Frank Miller, it's understandable that the movie won't thrill you too much. There are bits of that movie and the book where it just comes off as typical Frank Miller and I kind of  a bit.

Dawn of the Dead was a remake that didn't suck, too, when most horror movie remakes do.

Black Frieghter isnt in this?

I'm not touching this trainwreck.

There's an animated movie coming out.

I'm not surprised it was cut. You can get through the main point of the book without it. It's kind of like a nice little extra that makes the comic that much more detailed.

I'm just getting sour on this whole comic book movie phase. A studio or two has a couple hits, then we get assaulted with hundreds of movies trying to suckle the success of others. Sure, there have been some good ones... but we've had a lot of poorly written and conceived ones too...

As far as TMNT goes, if they want to make a Comic book film, they better had do it soon... within the next 2-3 years, since one of these days, the over-saturization of comic movies will cause its collapse. I've seen it hundreds of times.

That said, the only comic book film I'd kill to see is:

Apparently, this film was SO BAD that it actually won the European equivalent of the Razzies. And yet, it made a crap load of money in France....

You're kind of contradicting yourself. Like, I'm not nit picking you, but I have to disagree with some of your points. Youre saying Snyder isn't high profile due to the length of his resume, not the calibur of his films. But youre also essentially saying Danny Boyle is high profile because of the length of his resume, but I dont think Boyle is a name a ton of people know. You might only be saying he's high profile because he just won 8 awards for his new film. Chris Nolan is only well known because of his work on Batman. You can deny, and say you were a fan before Batman Begins. But no one else really was, unless they found his movies in a video store, or were in a film class. You can't deny that.

So, because of only a few films a director can be high profile...well,then Snyder might be on his way to being high profile.

And someone before mentioned The Spirit, and Rodriguez being a capable director. You know he didn't do anything with that piece of **** right?

PS: Alan Moore may agree that no one should make his comics into movies, and he'll never watch them. He DID say David Hayter's script (Solid Snakkkeeee-Guyverrrr) was the closest anyone could get to making a legitimate Watchmen script for film. Which is the script they're using, correct?

Yeah, how dare he mention the sacred name if the TMNT. The mere fact that this guy uttered the words TMNT is like him killing our fathers and raping our mothers and eating our dogs! He should appease us by sacrificing a trillion newborns every nanosecond, while constructing a monument all in our honor or we will not go to the theaters to watch his crappy movies.

Seriously? The guy mentions TMNT, and all of a sudden we're attacking him? Yeah, 300 sucked, so what? What makes you think he'll want to touch our holy property of the TMNT? You can deny, and say you were a fan before Batman Begins. But no one else really was, unless they found his movies in a video store, or were in a film class. You can't deny that.

Well that's my point. Boyle is high profile now because he just won so many Oscars. He can probably make whatever movie he wants to next. Same thing with Nolan, he's high profile because he a made a film that is now the second highest grossing picture of all time. People will come to him with work.

If Watchmen does well Zack might be on the way like you said but currently I don't believe that he is.

I like all this b*tching about comic-to-movie transitions being garbage. Remember when comic book films were nonexistent? Remember when comic book readers moaned and groaned for their favorite heroes to be seen on the big screen, only to realize the futility of it all? Now it's mainstream and the fanboys are still pissing and moaning about the horrible travesties that Hollywood throws their way. Beautiful.

Honestly, if a movie based on a comic series was exact to the letter, it'd be horrid. Look at Nolan's work at Batman -- not at all how it happened/happens in the book, but both films are deemed monumental by the fanbase. Sin City was generalized from Miller's original stories, but wasn't spot-on, either; the imagery helped that one gain money (before it became viewed as tired thanks to 300 and Spirit).

As for Alan Moore, he's got a stick jammed up his ass in general so of course he's going to sh*t on anything anybody does with his work. Though that doesn't stop the movie from being made, or the checks from coming to his door, now does it? Yeah, those books are DC property, but his name is still on the label. I love his stuff like the next fanboy (he's got a brilliant mind), but that doesn't change the fact that he's an asshole.

Seriously, all this boo-hooing is futile. You should all just be happy that the funnybooks you like to read and have enjoyed reading are getting this high profile treatment. It's what you wanted, wasn't it?

I would love for Zach Snyder to do a TMNT movie. I love the Movie 300. I have yet to see Watchmen but it looks promising. The guy seems to be pretty passionate about his movies. I don't understand how his movies are being torn apart just for him mentioning TMNT. Who are anyone of us to decide who can be a TMNT fan??

The constant complaining on here continues.............

Just an idea but instead of saying something negative how about not saying nothing at all? Its really not that hard.

Not entirely. Some comics, namely the superhero stuff, can lend themselves nicely to the movie . Thats because they don't need to adhere to any specific story and can draw from decades of material to forge something new.

But to adapt a graphic novel like the Watchmen is a mistake. To begin with, the Watchmen is not a story that can be told in two hours. It has so much depth and complexity that even stripping away the barest things, like the Black Freighter, make a huge impact on the story. Also, the Watchmen isn't just simply the story of some superheroes vs a bad guy. It's a comic about comics. That is completely lost in the translation to film. And again, adapting a graphic novel differs from just making a Spider-Man or X-Men or even Batman story. It is a complete work where each part matters, there aren't things you can drop or streamline.

I don't need to see the movie, I know from many readings that the Watchmen is not a two or so hour work. I know its not about spectacular explosions and slow motion fighting. And I have no interest in seeing someone whose name is Rorscach, who wears a similar costume and speaks lines that Rorscach did(but in an awful awful voice) but lacking any of his depth. I mean, the issue exploring Rorscach ALONE could be an over 3 hour movie. How do they plan on cramming it into a summer flick?

I get what you're saying MaC. Although I don't see why you can't just give the movie a chance? I know they aren't going to include everything in it and that's not the point. I personally would love it if they made the movie almost exactly like the book, but I know that it's impossible to pull off due to time constraints and the allmighty $$$. Unless if they make like 5 movies or a TV series, they can't do what you want them to do no matter how awesome or mediocre or crappy the director is.
The Watchmen works as a comic because it's kind of a self examination of a comic. That little bit is lost as a movie, but there is still a great story to tell and I personally want to see how Snyder's film pulls it off, Black Freighter or not. Let's just hope he doesn't overdo it with the slo-motion fighting.

I would have loved to see the Watchmen get the HBO treatment and get a 12 episode mini.

As for not giving it a chance, everything I've read in the reviews states that the slow motion is ever present and the action sequences are pumped up. That's just not what I want in a movie, let alone one sharing the name as the best original graphic novel.

Kinda like Transformers, that totally killed it for me(that and Shia LeBuff). I don't mind the action sequences though, provided they are not meaningless random battles or whatever.
The HBO treatment would be amazing though.

Actually, whenever Marvel or DC make a more "cerebral" movie, the kind that fans want (Ang Lee's Hulk, the uncut version of Daredevil, The Incredible Hulk, Superman Returns), there met with sheer derision. Yet popcorn flicks like Iron Man become incredibly popular. Unless your name is Bryan Synger or Christopher Nolan, nobody seems to want a movie that makes you think....yet that's all they cry out for.

danny boyle has been high profile since trainspotting...at least to anyone who keeps up with movies. And then i'd say he became as much of a house hold name as anyone who isn't spielberg/lucas level of directors after 28 days later. And danny boyle has been making whatever movie he wants to make his entire career. a life less ordinary, 28 days later, sunshine...

And who are you kidding saying that people are now going to come to nolan with work? He has been able to do pretty much whatever he wanted to do when ever he wanted to do it right after he made memento...

And winning awards doesn't make you a house hold name or able to do whatever you want. Do you know who sam mendes is? How about the guy who directed shakespeare in love?

Snyder is a pretty visually gifted director. his dawn of the dead remake was pretty good, 300 was visually compelling and I saw watchmen last monday thanks to a free screening here at the alamo drafthouse and it was also really good...of course the no squid ending was sort of a bummer but hey...And he also has the power to do whatever he wants. He is getting 3 different releases of watchmen he got the theatrical running time he wanted and the hard R rating. Frank Miller has said that he wants snyder to direct a The Dark Knight returns adaptation. Dude is legit.

Hayter's script did have some dumb stuff like Adrian getting shot as I recall. But it was re-written by Alex Tse anyway.

Bottom line for me is, the Watchmen is not a two and a half hour movie. Not by a long shot. There's far too much and I'm not interested in seeing Zach Synder's perceived vision of the Watchmen.

Watchmen is a great book. So what if it's a not so great movie. That SH!T happens all the time. If your a fan of the book, hold that in high regard and forget the movie even exists. The closest we will ever get to an accurate portrayal of the comic in a film (sort of) format is the Complete Motion Comic, which by the way isn't that bad. After this, I would bet the farm that Watchmen will never again be seen in live action form. So for those of you bitching about a film you have not even seen and proclaiming that Watchmen should never be a film, get over it. You should do two things: 1. don't go see the movie since your convinced you will hate it and 2. accept the fact that the one comic that should never be made into a film is now a film. Too bad.

Zack Snyder for TMNT?

The slow-motion 360 zoom shot of Leo cutting Shredder's head off would be GLORIOUS. :trazz:

Jokes aside, I'm pretty sure he's done with comic book movies unless there's a big paycheck in it, though. He seems pretty fed up with working super-hard on these things and getting ripped to shreds by f*cking nerds. Seriously, practically nobody puts more blood, sweat and tears into making movies than this guy does, and that isn't even a matter of opinion. He works SUPER hard on his movies and gets called a "hack" by a bunch of keyboard warriors because "OMG he takes this stuff too seriously!" and "He uses his preferred visual cues too much!" That's like complaining about hearing a guitar riff in Pythagorean Scale on an Offspring record. You knew what you were in for when you paid for admission. Bitching just to Bitch doesn't make you "smart" or "ahead of the curve", it just makes you a pissbaby.

I wasn't around when this thread happened, but it makes me laugh. Nobody in Real Life has anything to say about 300 besides, "That was Awesome." :trazz: Most people like his movies a lot, and they appreciate that his style of filmmaking is unique. It's just the bitter, jaded nerds who spend 99% of their time posting rants on message boards about how a movie "ruined their childhood" or whatever nonsense that whine about his stuff. Those aren't "real people", they're f*cking nerds. Nobody should give a sh*t what a bunch of people whose most "creative" works get flushed down the toilet after breakfast have to say about a single goddamn thing, movies or otherwise. Those people ain't doin' sh*t, and they're going nowhere. They piss and moan because they wish they were in a position to do what he does, but they're not. "Those who Can't, cry on message boards." They're like wrestling fans, but more insufferable. At least wrestlers are real people; comic book geeks get bent outta shape over fictional characters!

I don't blame him for being fed up with the comic book genre and its fans. To work super-hard on making movies - which is a really hard thing to do - and then get called names by a bunch of Cheetos-smelling, basement-dwelling dorks who can't even use spellcheck and haven't seen the sun in 66 days has to be SUPER annoying.

I'd have a beer with him. George Lucas, too (although I don't actually think Lucas is much of a "filmmaker"; more of an "Ideas Guy"). But the one thing they both have in common is that they're both apparently sick of having a bunch of fat shut-ins tear their work to shreds when they can just do other things instead. Can't say I blame either of 'em!
