Finally done this blasted thing. Got REALLY annoyed with it towards the end, but whatever, it's done.

Your 2003 Shredder turned out super nice. I imagine he's saying something like "It's all about toning you chunky midget". I never wanted a more articulated new toon Shredhead but after seeing yours it has become a must. Playmates git r done!

Thanks, guys! Here's the combo image with recipe etc:

http://www.wesoteric.com/toyimg/customs/2k3shreddercustom.jpeg

Recipe:

Body is DCSH Superman with DCUC Nightwing forearms (I think; they were stray pieces in a fodder lot from a friend and I just wanted to get them out of the way)
Head, shoulder armor, hands, and belt/skirt from 2K3 Shredder
Forearm armor from Slice 'n' Dice Shredder
Shin armor from 1988 Shredder

Comments:

My main goal with this one was to differentiate it from my Cyber Shredder custom (not pictured because I've disassembled and partly repainted him for no good reason; I'm OCD like that). For that one I used mostly drybrushing, so here I went with a lot of heavy washes and minor drybrushing for blending on some parts. It should have been a quick and easy custom, but I repainted the pieces way more times than necessary (again, OCD) because I kept thinking I wanted stuff to look different. The skirt was the worst offender -- I did that central/rear strip at least three different ways before settling on this one. The holes aren't very deep, so the detail was barely noticeable with a proper wash -- so I basically painted the holes individually with darker wash droplets. Kind of a sloppy look, but I think I like it best this way... or at least that's what I'll tell myself to keep from spending another 10+ hours on those areas alone. (Including the side portions, I easily spent more time on the skirt than the rest of the figure combined. Ugh.)

Anyway, it's done. Next custom please. x_x

You act like I only do Shredder! :P The last one I finished was a Foot Ninja... the next one probably will be as well. (Well, technically the last one I finished was a Smurf (http://wes-the-crayon.deviantart.com/art/The-Purple-Zombie-Smurf-287815074), but I didn't post that here because it's not TMNT!) I'm still waiting for that Rat King you showed ages ago, and I do know that you have red Shredder as WIP. But more foot soldiers sound good too, can't wait for them.

(Also, that Smurf is cool!)

Sounds good! It's not really that unusual, though -- we pretty much said it in full in the other thread :D -- just a Street Shark with arms and legs from other figures. I'm not even sure the arms part will pan out properly (I ordered them tonight; I'll know better once I have them in hand), and the proportions could end up being kinda odd... which doesn't so much bother me, but yeah. He's also going to end up being HUGE. It's in keeping with some of the comic/cover depictions, but certainly not with Tournament Fighters! Ah well.

Basically, I got ahold of this guy and I'm really interested in trying something with him. :tgrin:

Yes, I remember!

As far as what's inside them... I don't know about the others, but I'm pretty sure there's NOTHING inside Slugger Slammu. Actually, that's part of what appeals to me about using him, since I don't have to worry about fighting with any internal mechanisms -- he doesn't have the jaw-opening action. He's also made of some pretty tough plastic, probably because they weren't worried about making his jaw open. Feels kinda like a vinyl piggy bank.

http://www.wesoteric.com/toyimg/customs/armaggonidea.jpeg

I haven't done any actual modding yet, but here's the basic idea... Slammu for the body, Mojo arms (I kinda like that they're skinny and long-ish and have four fingers on each hand), and DCUC BAF legs -- partly because making the figure bottom-heavy will help to keep it balanced, partly because I want to use those things for *something*, and partly because their thickness is in line with the thicker stumpy legs Armaggon has in the Archie comics. Not sure if I'd try to give him webbed flipper feet or sculpt over the feet to make them like those blobby things (but I'm leaning towards the latter).

And the missile launcher is just an idea -- I could sculpt them, but I kinda want to use actual firing missiles for the pods because hey, FUN! Ideally I'd find something smaller (maybe a pair of Transformer guns or something), but we'll see.

Missile launchers are good idea, but I think they should be sculpted into the body. Arms look good, but they seem awfully small compared to the legs in that pic, maybe when you've actually done something they look better. Did you plan to just sculpt the tail, or use some part for it?

Lordmylar06

I wish I'd thought of Mojo arms! It works out better because he had sort of a lean quality to his arms.

Thanks for the suggestion -- I'll look into that! The only Joe weapons I have are from recent figs, which are way too huge to work with my plan here, but maybe some of the older ones would work.

Yeah -- if I go with the missile launchers, I'm planning to use sculpt to blend them into the body (so they'd ideally be smaller than the Iron Man launcher I stuck in this pic by way of example). And yeah, we'll see how the legs work! Armaggon's not the most proportionate dude, so I don't mind the legs being much thicker than the arms, and presumably the feet will look less like feet (and hence the legs will seem a bit less long) once they're modified to be the blobby things (if I go that route). But I can always cut out some height, too. I dunno -- I'd just kinda like to find some use for them, since these BAF parts don't do me any good sitting around. :P

And re: the tail, probably just planning to use a toy shark or something. The front fins could go to the forearms; the latter half could go to the tail. And I could save the head in case I ever felt like doing another Armaggon closer to his Tournament Fighters scale (or some other shark-headed dude). :)

Wow, it really seems to add some needed articulation, is it tricky to do?

Wes
06-13-2012, 03:35 AM
^It is a bit, yeah! But the good thing is that if you take off too much in reshaping the ankles, you can always sculpt it back. :)

New idea...

http://www.wesoteric.com/toyimg/customs/casey-idea.jpeg

So I really like this -- I'd paint it up to look more/less like Casey Jones in the 2007 TMNT flick, perhaps even with the silver mask -- but dang that Sportsmaster is tall! With the vintage Casey head, he ends up being a touch taller than most DCUC figures. So if I go with this idea I'm thinking I'll try replacing the legs or cutting some height out somewhere.

It's a cast made by a fellow customizer! That translucent substance is sturdy stuff, too... took me nearly two hours to hollow that thing out, and it spewed white powder the entire time. x_x

2 hours?! what the heck did you use...the sharp end of a thumbtack?! you need to get one of these:
http://www.dremel.com/en-us/Accessories/Pages/ProductDetail.aspx?pid=114
they come in various shapes and sizes and work WONDERS for hollowing out or shaving down parts! it'll have hollowed out that head perfectly in less than 30 seconds!

Wes
06-13-2012, 11:37 AM
Ha ha, good call! I have a smaller one of those, but it's not so much good for hollowing out things as it is for creating mushroom cap holes and I always fear using it because of my tendency to screw up. (Admittedly, that was part of the reason for the length of time I spent working on this head -- I wanted to make absolutely sure I didn't sand all the way through it.) I'll have to see about getting a larger one, though!

Wes
07-22-2012, 02:18 PM
I need to figure out a way to shorten Mr. Jones before moving forward with him, since I want him to be a bit shorter than my 2K3 Shredder. As it is, dude is too damned tall. :)

Or too damned short, if one wanted to pose him with the new TMNT classic figs. :ohwell:

TheCanadiandrome

That looks like it'll be sick

Wes
07-25-2012, 07:21 PM
So as Lordmylar and I were just discussing... if you're planning to repaint these figures, you'll have to contend with some serious paint rub issues at the shoulders. (I kinda feel bad for whoever bought those $400 custom paint jobs, since it didn't look like the customizer did anything with the shoulders. Imagine having paid that much for a figure only to have the paint scratch as soon as you tried to pose it! I suppose a wash would be a little less susceptible to paint rub, though.) Basically, to combat it, I did as much sanding and grinding as I could around the shoulder area... and since that still wasn't enough, I ultimately removed the arm and went to town inside the shoulder cavity. That took quite a bit of doing, too. Raph's shoulders are apparently the most recessed of all of the Turtles, so I had to grind his torso down quite a bit just to be able to slide the pin out of the shoulder hinge. (Thankfully, the area is mostly covered by the plastron.)

http://www.wesoteric.com/toyimg/customs/slashwip02.jpeg

http://www.wesoteric.com/toyimg/customs/slashwip03.jpeg

Anyway, while I know what I'm doing now, it feels like way too much work to get these things moving properly -- DCUC figures require a whole lot less attention at the shoulders and you end up with a superarticulated figure when you're done. That said, once I finish with Slash, I think I may try another repaint with Mikey. His shoulders aren't recessed at all, which should make removing them (and thus sanding down the shoulder cavity to combat paint rub) that much easier.

Lordmylar06
07-25-2012, 07:38 PM
I didn't think of this before, but it's possible to crack the turtle at the torso on the side where the line is using a small flathead screwdriver. Then you could take the arms out with the shoulder discs, make the needed space to prevent wear on the torso, then replace the arm afterward.
I still think staining the figure is a good idea though, that's going to save you some serious headache if any rubbing does occur. with your paint app. At least the old color won't stick out like a sore thumb.
I may actually try that this weekend when i get more work done on mine.

Wes
07-25-2012, 07:42 PM
Has anyone done it easily? I've cracked a few Playmates Toys figures before -- it was pretty goddamned difficult and I practically ruined the pieces I was separating. Even cracking Slash to get his shell was no easy feat, and removing Raph's shell was a chore if ever there was one! I ended up cutting it in half at the belt line and prying it loose with downward (and upward, for the upper piece) force.

If you do this I would recommend right where the belt goes in on the side of the figure, since there's already kind of a gap there. Whatever you do, DON'T LEAVE THE HEAD ON THE FIGURE. Since the seam goes all the way to the ball on the neck I think that would be disastrous. If you do happen to crack it, post pics. I wanna see the guts of these guys.

How hard was it to remove just the plastron?

I've been laying out a plan for my own Slash, but I may tweak another figure's plastron as well.

Pretty sure I'm not going to be the guy to crack one of these -- cracking figures open has never worked well for me. The only things I feel comfortable cracking are crotches, and even then I only do it when it's completely necessary (like to keep a shoddy DCUC figure from breaking or to attach a skirt or something).

How hard was it to remove just the plastron?
Oh, that part's easy -- you just rip it right off. :)

So I was working on this quick, gritty zombie custom (see this post on Scary-Crayon (http://www.scary-crayon.com/blog/10-19-2012/a-quick-halloween-custom/) when I looked over at the Leo among my fodder figures and decided to give it a gritty makeover for the heck of it since I was planning to repaint the thing entirely anyway. Not entirely finished with the wiping portion of the method, and I think I might redo the wraps on the ankles, but here's the fig so far.

Yeah, what's involved in a Wes Wash?

Wes
10-24-2012, 11:00 PM
It's actually sort of like a reverse wash! Here's the relevant quote from the Scary-Crayon link:

My method really isn't all that difficult -- I mostly just painted over the entire thing in black, let it dry, and then gently wiped the black off with a rag and rubbing alcohol.

And here's a pic of a screaming zombie toy I used it on (along with a "spray" technique I used for the first time).

New custom WIP shots! Casey here’s almost done; just need to repaint him, replace the hands (not sure what hands I want on the final product... any suggestions?), and do a few other minor tweaks and he’ll be good to go. Honestly I like those hands. You can use some needle nosed pliers to grab and kinda peel the claws out or you can use an exacto knife to sheer them off at the flesh. Can't wait to see them painted.

Oh, if you peel them out, you'll need to fill the gaps they leave with some apoxie sculpt

They're not terrible hands, but ideally I'd have non-hinged hands so that Casey can hold accessories more securely. If I decide to go with hinged hands, though, I've got no shortage of those... kinda leaning towards the Daredevil gloves, if only because it'd be nice to use them for something before they get buried in the fodder bins again.

http://www.wesoteric.com/toyimg/customs/caseywip-new01.jpeg

I'm also considering using one Daredevil glove and one hand from another figure (maybe even one of the Wolverine hands) for an asymmetrical look... but I can't imagine another sitch where I'd just want to use one Daredevil glove, so I probably won't do that. :)

Casey Jones is looking good. what color are you planning on painting him?

Wes
11-14-2012, 05:19 AM
Probably the same colors he already is, more/less! Just planning to do a grey wash on the torso -- I figure Casey wears white t-shirts enough that I can leave the base plastic color the same. If it saves me the trouble of sanding, painting, and repeating until there's no paint rub, I'm all for it. :P

Jeans I'll probably paint blue, too -- just want them to be uniform, since the upper and lower legs come from different figures. I might just try to match the lower legs to the upper legs (saving me the trouble of painting the upper ones), or do them both in a uniform blue... or grey. We'll see.

Gloves will probably end up brown with orange bits, kinda like the gloves on the 2K3 figure.

The shoes will get a wash and maybe some brown dusting (so they look worn/dirty), but they'll stay green. I want him to have green sneakers as a shout-out of sorts to the vintage figure. :)

Aaand the head will just get kinda touched up. I'll get rid of the blue "veins" in the hair and go with brown highlights instead, but otherwise I don't plan on changing its look much.

looking great so far, as expected nice clean cuts, and appropriate joints for Ms april, Seriously she needs them, at least the knee and elbow ones are a must. are you keeping her boots / toes as is?

Thanks, guys! :)

BMo: The joints are from a Star Wars Ahsoka Tano figure. Ahsoka's shoulders are going to April's elbows; the knees are the knees. :)

gunstarheroblue: The cool part about it is that the cuts don't have to be clean or measured out. The way I did it was to make the Ahsoka pieces longer than necessary and make them narrow at the ends, then cut April wherever and drill holes in the April parts. That way I could slide the Ahsoka parts up or down as necessary (comparing them to the original leg at first, and now to the modified leg) to get the desired length/knee placement. :)

And yeah, I'm going to leave the boots as is, since it doesn't look like anyone else in the line is getting ankle articulation. I kinda want to keep April looking as "factory" as I can -- so basically I'm giving her the articulation Playmates should have (what the Turtles got), but not going beyond that in terms of modifications and painting.

Though I guess, since April's got that waist cut, she'll surpass the boys by one POA. Girl power?

April's been more/less done for ages now... I kept sanding and repainting the knees to further work on tiny bits of paint rub (kinda hard to eliminate when the joints are this small and not easily disassembled), and then when I was done with that I just never took her off the work table to take pics. But I finally did that, so here are a couple. :P

From the pages of Savage Dragon and Freak Force and TMNT... HORRIDUS!

http://www.wesoteric.com/toyimg/customs/horridus-fin-tdrome.jpeg

Body: Marvel Legends Infinite Spider-Girl
Feet: DC Universe Classics Cheetah
Spikes: $1 ankylosaurs + sculpting
Head: $1 stegosaurus + plastic fork prongs + sculpting
Tail: $1 horned lizard + Mega Bloks joint + sculpting

I made this figure for the 2014 Secret Santa customizer event over at The Fwoosh -- and it's easily the most involved custom I've done to date. Lots and lots of chopping and sculpting and sanding and sighing and swearing... to say nothing of all the times I glued my fingers together when placing those spikes. I even painted eyes!

Horridus went to fellow customizer SAMhain -- I hope she enjoys her new home. Miss you, girl.

I'm also considering using one Daredevil glove and one hand from another figure (maybe even one of the Wolverine hands) for an asymmetrical look... but I can't imagine another sitch where I'd just want to use one Daredevil glove, so I probably won't do that. :)

If it's Ninja Turtles related, the size in relation tp Casey, actually would make for an excellent Shadow as a teen.

Eyyyyy, guys! It's been forever!

So I made a TMNT-related custom for last year's Fwoosh Secret Santa event. Dig it: IDW Shredder.

The last two pics were taken by Shinigami Customs -- he was the lucky recipient of ol' tin grin.

Aaaand I don't have any WIP shots, but the basics: Shredder is a Marvel Select (comic) Drax with arms from NECA SFIV Ryu. Armor is modified from Playmates Super Shredder; helmet is cut from a 2K3 Armorized Shredder. Feet from a Lanard Dragon-Do figure (Krane, apparently).

Thanks for looking!

Thanks for the kudos, Optimus Primer and TheCanadiandrome! While we're at it, let's have another...

http://www.wesoteric.com/toyimg/customs/footninja2018aa.jpeg

So this is actually one I started a reaaaally long time ago -- like, nearly a decade ago. Back then I did a couple of Foot Ninjas using Spectacular Spider-Man bases and mostly finished this one then as well, but for variety I wanted this one to have a cloth gi and belt. And... I didn't get around to that part of the equation until a few weeks ago. But it's finished, and the Shredder has one more recruit for his ranks. Huzzah!

Anyway, Spectacular Spider-Man figure (black costume, version 2), sculpted glove cuffs and pant poofs (and added calf swivels below), and cloth gi. Black elastic for the belt. Simple and effective.

Long time! Just thought I'd post a WIP shot of a minor project I've got going on -- splicing joints into the Mutant Mayhem Turtles to give them hinged, pivoting ankles and adding wraps to cover the joins (see Leo's one ankle). I'm also doing very minor shading work on the bodies, as seen with Leo. Not sure how I'll go about that with Mike, since he's so dark and I expect this technique won't be as visible on him, but we'll see! Also debating removing the black linework on the faces and/or whiting out the eyes... but I really don't want to make this too much more involved than it needs to be.

Lookin' rad! I think just the wraps on their own with some shading would look great, but going all out and painting their pads brown and eyes white might be cool too...

Oh I definitely prefer the colored pads, so I'll leave those alone! Wraps I may paint different colors for different Turtles -- not sure how that'll shake out, but I'm thinking I won't try to match the colors with their signature ones. Black for Leo gives me a kinda Rise vibe, so I'll probably stick with that for him. Might pull inspiration from Rise for the others. I like the idea of white/off-white for Raph, and for Mikey I'm pondering mismatching them with neon fuchsia and blue in a callback to his plastron stickers/tattoos. We'll see. :tgrin:
