Did anyone else get an e-mail from TMNT25.com today?
I did, and I was quite disturbed by it (http://ninja-pizza.blogspot.com/2009/03/complete-failure-of-tmnt25.html).

EDIT: All that said, I did have fun scrolling down... thinking the whole time "what could possibly be at the bottom?" And then I got all confused and disappointed by the video link. Surreal.... and not in a good way.

I just laughed about how stupid it is.
But it's sad considering Mirage could have used that $1 million for something actually good. That's what bothers me more, the fact that the money put aside for this is being wasted.

Got mine. They should have just given me a million dollars to make lame YouTube rants....:P
Edit: Heck, I plan on completing the TMNT movies in May with MCubed video reviews of Secret of the Ooze, TMNT III, and TMNT '07.

They could have put a lot more effort into that image instead of them having their arms crossed or in a standing position. No one can possibly stand still while falling with a smile on their face. The "Turtle Van" looks like a taxi to me but, couldn't they make the tires a different color than the road?

I'm all about TPTB putting some effort -- any effort, even if lame -- into somehow promoting the 25th anniversary of TMNT. But what amounts to apparently hiring a bunch of hacks to go around promoting and spreading word about the TMNT in the form of the worst possible, imaginable aspect of the TMNT as a franchise, and even then making a caricature of that... yeah, this is pretty much the very last thing TMNT needs right now.

I cannot believe Mirage seriously paid this company $1 million just to f*** its fans over. I haven't seen money wasted this bad since Sony developed and released the PS3.
Either way, I remember getting this email, reading all the way to the bottom, and deleting it immediately. I didn't even bother to click that button at the bottom with the video. Holy s***, it would've just contributed even more to my extreme disappointment in this 25th Anniversary campaign.
Geez, Ike and Tina Turner probably had better anniversaries than the Turtles at this point. I've never been more saddened to be a TMNT fan.

Got it. Was not very surprised. I had hated the TMNT25 website when it was gone public too. Most ppl love it very much and i fully respect that, but i really hate the original cartoon and images or characters reminding me that style.
That mail was really like a joke. If you are a lover of original cartoon, seeing the crappy thing will make your heart ache even much more , i am sure.
I do not know what Mirage is trying to do. I mean , which medium of TMNT are they using to advertise on. They wanna use the TV turtles which are ofc much more popular. But tbh i do not know any children around me who will go crazy or even will feel anything at all over those images or video or that TMNT25 celebration acts we see nowadays.
I hope summer and afterwards will be better with the coming of comic collections.
Summary : I would not want any friend of mine who just knew about the cartoon side of TMNT and knew that i liked and collected Mirage Comics to see that mail.
I sometimes even feel sad that we are at anniversary 25 cause of such failed attempts. Will those help the Mirage survive and go on to publish the Mirage comics?... I hope they will survive but not with any help of such stuff.

We can always count on Rose for the laugh and the truth. I thought that the Turtles where getting a little too friendly with the State Building myself. Can't they even get a SMOOTH downward motion done right? I mean, $1million's they can at least hire someone who knows what the hell they are doing..
If Pete didn't have his savings, or be close t retirement, I wonder if things would be in better shape. Gary and his family have got to be taken out of the franchise first and fore most before anything is to succeed. Otherwise, we get no quality control and things worse than peppercom coming out of all this money invested.

Terrible. F!!!
I too never liked the TMNT25.com site. It really steers towards the old cartoon TMNT and that just wasn't the TMNT I read. I'm an original TMNT fan before the old toon came on. Yet the site is always about these TMNT. I just don't understand the point of the website. Everything is for the kids, juvenile, childish. Yet you hardly see the other TMNT incarnations, B&W Mirage, 2K3 toons TMNT, movie Turtles, getting any focus on the site.
So what the hell is the point of all this? This site should've been a sublink page through the official Mirage site instead of its own URL. The site alone isn't worth crap! Who is the site adhering to? Only the old TMNT toon fans? Because the kids of today don't know about the old toon unless their parents got the dvd sets for them to watch. The kids of now would be alot more aware of the 2K3 TMNT toon. $1,000,000 for this? Mirage sure looks stupid. That money could've funded the direct to dvd TMNT 25th anniversary "lost" CGI TMNT #1 adaptation, not **** like this. Anything TMNT 25 years, could've all been on the Mirage page instead. Glad I never subscribed to the email.

This isn't the 25th anniversary of the '80s cartoon. If it was, this sort of campaign (albeit more professionally presented) would be acceptable.
But this is the 25th anniversary of the TMNT, period. The TMNT who began in the pages of Mirage comics. They're dissapointed that they have under three-thousand readers? They seem to be doing f*ck all to change that. This is a wasted chance to promote the real version of the Turtles.
The adults who grew up and remember the old toon won't be interested in this child pandering rubbish, and new children fans won't recognize this incarnation of the characters. But you know what? Older fans may have been passively interested in a (major) campaign that introduced the original, darker characters. Oh well. It's not infuriating. It's just dissapointing. And a little confusing.

When i first saw the logo pic, i mean the B&W comic art is evolved to OT , then 2k3 animated show and then finally to 2007 CGI movie. I had hated to see this. This is accepting that they find the comic part of TMNT important JUST because it is the medium that started the franchise, but nowadays TMNT is depending on not comic but tv shows or movies. When i think of it, yeah it is probably true. There are still tons of ppl unaware of Mirage Comics who say : "Oh I used to love the OT when i was a kid, he he he".. BANG!
But again, this logo pic design always bugged me.
Why not making a site ( or even a link in that "God Almighty" TMNT25 site) that is telling about the real TMNT... I guess they think that would damage the greatness of the site.

At first I expected this to be another overreaction to something not being perfect about the 25th anniversary (okay, so the Shredder figure and the April costume don't look perfect), but that really stank. Anyone with any enthusiasm for the turtles would have probably put in at least a little more effort. The lack of effort in that is really disappointing.

I've gotten very good at not getting rawled up about TMNT25. I find it is much easier to treat things they do that I don't like as if it doesn't exist rather than spending my time effort and energy hating it and yelling.
At the end of the day, they aren't really HURTING anything, even with some of the more awkward things theyve done. And if they get a handful of new fans, then great!
If not, then I doubt they'll be removing anyone from the already esablished fanbase. I mean, if anyone is going to say "I'm not going to be a turtles fan anymore because of PepperCom." Then they probably should get the hell out of our fandom anyway.
At the end of the day...let then spend their money on whatever they like, and let them send out lame emails and videos. Occassionally they might do something good...and the lame stuff...really isn't worth freaking out over. I'm sure we've all got bigger problems in our lives then "pole dancing turtles".

Or maybe some people see the 25th anniversary stuff as not being that bad, or at least far from being a "complete failure". That e-mail does look like an effortless mess, and the franchise does deserve a lot better, but what we are getting is better than nothing at all. That might sound like I'm going too easy on Mirage, but given the economy and how the Turtles aren't exactly at the height of their popularity anymore, it really is better than nothing at all.

Under normal circumstances I'd agree (the "better than nothing at all" stance)... but when we both agree that the TMNT aren't exactly at the height of their popularity anymore, when things like that (the TMNT 25th ad campaign rubbish) are circulating around and actually only serving to reinforce a very negative, very cancerous image of the TMNT... then no, it's not better than nothing at all. Not if it's only serving to diminish what little self-respect the franchise has left.

I wouldn't say it's hurting anything, I just don't think it's going to help very much. A well thought out campaign might give the franchise a bit of a shot in the arm, but I would say that any kind of attention being shown to the franchise is better than it being completely forgotten. I'm just wondering who took a final look at that e-mail and thought, "this is a great example of effective advertising. Let's do it!".
The only images of the Turtles that I'd consider to be "negative" would be the Coming Out of Their Shells Tour. Now that was bad.

i think in the larger scheme of things, this is just a drop in the bucket. turtle christmas, coming out of their shells, movies 2 & 3 (and arguably 1 & 4), the weaker seasons of the ot, next mutation, the bizarre choices playmates made, the slew of inane merchandise and cheap cash-ins...
some fans like some of things, but all that stuff is what alienated a good chunk of the fanbase a long, long time ago. and imo, there is just too much about the characters/concepts themselves that keeps a wider, older audience at bay. i mean teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles, we say it so much we forget how ridiculous it sounds.
so in lieu of that...at this point a silly e-mail hardly seems worth having any emotion for whatsoever. and with the global financial crisis, i'm sure it's putting a lot of things into perspective for a lot of people. the tmnt thrived on rampant consumerism, and those days are at an end.
i wish a lot of the actual people associated with the franchise well, but i think that the ship is sinking/has been sinking.

Am I the only one that didn't link the last picture with phallic imagery?
No, you're not the only one. I didn't connect it with anything vulgar until seeing the blog post and this thread. Pole-dancing was the last thing any of that reminded me of. But while I may not have made any perverted connections between the Turtles and the Empire State Building, I did think to myself that it all looked like utter crap... that and I wondered why the Turtles are now apparently the size of King Kong.
The TMNT fandom has become so sad, I mean bashing a promotional email?
Yeah its silly but its not meant for us, all companies do this, hell I get tons of similar emails by Nintendo all the time just to name one company.
I can't believe you're comparing this (http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/7100/nintemail.png) to this (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3639/3386151703_88597fec6b_o.jpg)...
Who the heck IS the e-mail meant for, anyway? My 11-year-old sister saw the video and simply looked confused and asked, "What the heck?" So if children are their target, they failed there, too.
First and foremost, I'd like to say that I really don't like when people say things like, "It's for kids, so it's okay for it to be crap." No, I'm sorry, but I must disagree. Kids should be treated with respect and dignity, too, rather than having their intelligence insulted by garbage like this. Kids are smarter than most adults give them credit for, and they have every right to quality material that grown-ups have.
That aside, though, my major gripe with everything that Peppercom's been doing isn't even so much that they're doing it... but rather that they were paid a million bucks to do it! It's like they scammed Mirage. Like, they stashed away all that money and are spewing out this trash so that they can turn a higher personal profit from that said million.
Is it really so "sad" to feel so disappointed when something you love so dearly is treated with so much disrespect and lack of effort? Nobody benefits from this ad campaign at all, but it certainly is hurting the TMNT's image by making it look like mindless and embarrassing.
Still, a million dollars for this crap? I don't get how Peter Laird can allow this type of thing to happen. Even to this day, Stan Lee has a LOT of love for his creations and always tries to make sure that things meet up to his standard in terms of licensing. Not everyone might agree with him on all points, but the man is passionate about Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, etc.
We've already seen the type of marketing that Mirage will settle for (in the form of Peppercom)?
http://www.youtube.com/v/dCM93Ib90Co
And what kind of marketing can we expect for Marvel?
http://www.youtube.com/v/rtUdnpi5Dek
Sure, you might be saying that it's unfair to compare a big company like Marvel to a small company like Mirage... but if Mirage can shell out a million dollars, then shouldn't we be getting an ad campaign that reflects such a big budget?
That might sound like I'm going too easy on Mirage, but given the economy and how the Turtles aren't exactly at the height of their popularity anymore, it really is better than nothing at all.
I think the fact that the economy is so bad is exactly the reason NOT to have total crap handed to ya when you fork over a cool million. Because so much money was poured into something that obviously won't benefit anyone, then I'd say nothing at all actually WOULD have been better. Especially for underpaid Mirage employees.
Archon_Turtle

Actually, she raises a pretty valid point about you.
Just saying.
Really? How's That?
Exactly how do I promote myself any more than anyone else here? First of all, tmnt25 wanted me to create my post series on their blog to balance out Jake's "I am not a turtle fan" blogs. Not that those are bad, Jake and I have spoken at length about them, and his perspective is just as valid and interesting as anyone else's. The point is, they chose the topic of my blogs, they ask me to continue them. There is no sucking up, I am simply providing them with what they are asking me for.
Second, both of the documentary projects were also things that I was approached about. Hell, ROSE was the one that referred Lion's Gate to me in the first place!
Third, when I reference GoGreenMachine.org in my posts, I am NOT promoting myself. Never once will you ****ING EVER hear me take single credit for that project or it's success. GoGreenMachine is a COMMUNITY project, with many contributors on both sides of the Turtle Universe. It is one of the most well rounded and frequently updated TMNT blogs you can find out there. Yes, I AM very proud of it, and of the work that I have done on it, but I am EQUALLY proud of every single other person involved in it's success. And I will ALWAYS credit them before myself.
If there are any additional ways in which you feel I am "promoting" myself, I would absolutely love to hear it. Because I fail to see how I promote myself any more than any of you. Andrew, is it not self promotion when you post links to your action figure videos? And Rose, you BEGAN this thread with a link directly into your personal blog...a post I might add that CLEARLY indicates your infamy in the TMNT fandom.
Maybe because I'm constantly accused of being unnecessarily negative. Maybe because I respect the fact that the people at Peppercom are people who need jobs, just like the rest of us. Maybe because, despite popular opinion, I actually have no desire to be the topic of Peter Laird's rants in the back of his comic book.
So please, tell me, how am I any worse than you?
Look, outside of the context of this thread, I would never have called you guys out of stuff like that. But if you're gonna hang out in glass houses, you shouldn't be throwing stones. Frankly, I don't think there is anything wrong with sharing the good things that happen to you, or sharing an achievement, creation, or aquisition. I'm happy to find out that something good has happened to someone. Especially if it relates to the turtles. So exactly what IS the problem here?
Andrew NDB
03-30-2009, 01:21 PM
Andrew, is it not self promotion when you post links to your action figure videos?

The problem is a bit of the pot calling the kettle black. Rose called you on it and now you're throwing a tantrum.

Yes, as well as the work of the many other individuals involved. But we're not talking about me.
So then I am more than a little confused as to the motivation of your statement. Cause you're essentially saying (and I'm obviously paraphrasing) "I know I do exactly the same thing that Rose just attacked you for...but she's right!"
The problem is a bit of the pot calling the kettle black. Rose called you on it and now you're throwing a tantrum.
Simply validating my actions is a tantrum? Was I just supposed to take it?
Exactly how is the pot calling the kettle black here? I simply stated that the email didn't bother me, and I said why. I accused Rose of nothing. She attacked me. I don't belive "the pot calling the kettle black" really fits here (unless you're referencing the two of you). Are we not allowed to disagree with eachother anymore? If that's true, a number of us will have nothing to talk about...

I don't see the problem. Archon is an out-spoken and extremely HARD CORE!!! fan and so tmnt25 came to him. I have no problem with that, and I have tried to use this forum as a spring board for greatness. You think I update a lame video series on a forum where all of 3 people care for nothing more? All I'm saying is if Archon's guilty of self-promotion and butt-kissery than I guess I am too.

My comments concerning Archon aren't because of any of the documentaries or any of the blogs in and of themselves. My comments come from his perpetual "LOOK AT ME" posts that make up the majority of his contributions to this board. "I got this!" "I spent money on that!" "I hung out with so-and-so!" And then emails Dan at ninjaturtles.com saying the same things in hopes that he posts them for even more people to see.
The self-promotion stuff is easy enough to ignore, but I'm kinda tired of his "I'm better than thou" attitude when it comes to certain things, as demonstrated in here.
Meanwhile, he's still messaging me asking for my opinion on whether or not something on eBay is a good purchase because he doesn't actually know the history of a lot of this stuff. Anyone can buy anything given the money; it's really not that impressive. And it's not even comparable to someone who has put creative effort into something and wants to share that effort with others.

Is sharing experiences not what this board is for? Heaven forbid I post about a new toy or comic I get in a forum that is intended to do just that.
And again, you are just a guilty, only at the other end of the spectrum. "Look at me! I'm Rose! I hate everything TMNT! Every post or reply I make is negative! How dare you put a posative spin on something! Read about how much I hate my own fandom as I pick apart a stupid marketing e-mail! Rawr!" If you're going to call me out, you're going to get it right back.
And then emails Dan at ninjaturtles.com saying the same things in hopes that he posts them for even more people to see.
Oh yes Rose, how dare I presume that the NEWS section of the official TMNT site would be interested in posting about the biggest TMNT cast reunion in 15 years. What was I thinking? Look, my e-mail to dan was simply a way to help create buzz for the documentary. It wasn't about me being there, it was about the fact that the event happened. With as much as you bitch about poor marketing, you sure have a hard time recognizing good marketing.
The self-promotion stuff is easy enough to ignore, but I'm kinda tired of his "I'm better than thou" attitude when it comes to certain things, as demonstrated in here.
The only thing I have demonstrated here is that the Jaded Hypocrate mold was shattered when they made you.
Meanwhile, he's still messaging me asking for my opinion on whether or not something on eBay is a good purchase because he doesn't actually know the history of a lot of this stuff.
How does one attain knowledge? By seeking it. I messege you about things that I know you know about so that I can learn. Because I repect you're fount of knowledge in certain areas of the fandom. Because at one point, before you leapt into this spiral of self loathing and despair, I called you my friend.
Anyone can buy anything given the money; it's really not that impressive. And it's not even comparable to someone who has put creative effort into something and wants to share that effort with others.
I'm sorry, but what is a collection for if not to share with the people who would care?

Why don't you guys spend your energy to try and get Lionsgate to put the 3 skipped eps on DVD? If Lionsgate listens to other things, why not this?

this is ********. every single thing archon has said here is valid. completely valid. all i see hear is rose pissing on the parade again. she does absolutely nothing to contribute any more and her tmnt "news" site is a farce of anti-laird propaganda with the odd bit of "this is happening" or "remember this old toon lunchbox?"
when all the comics came out or news appeared elsewhere about them there was nothing at all on that ninjapizza blog.
at least archon is still excited about things and seeing a big fan excited like that makes me excited again. and he's proactive! nobody does anything to help here anymore except post here. people complain about the fanbase and the comics and the cartoons and everything, but the only other conversations I ever see about tmnt in any other forums are on toonzone once in a while.

Aren't we all friends? Isn't getting this bent out of shape about Pepercom's mailer and people's differing opinions counter productive? Archon and I are friends (or at least friendly) and I want to say that Rose and I are also on friendly terms. Andy and I have butted heads, but I'd like to say that we've shared friendly moments too. We all have disagreed at one point or another, but there is one thing that binds us: TMNT. I hate to use the old stand-by but: Can't we all just get along?

I think the fact that the economy is so bad is exactly the reason NOT to have total crap handed to ya when you fork over a cool million. Because so much money was poured into something that obviously won't benefit anyone, then I'd say nothing at all actually WOULD have been better. Especially for underpaid Mirage employees.
When I was referring to anything being better than nothing at all, I was talking about the 25th anniversary as a whole. A lot of fans seem to do nothing but complain, but what we are getting as fans is still pretty good. Another movie would be cool, more attention being brought to the franchise would be good, but ten years ago I would have seriously doubted that the TMNT would see even this much activity.
I have to agree though, Mirage is getting ripped off when it comes to their partner for the promotional stuff. It probably would have been a better investment to look at more options, even if they did cost more money.

Come on, everyone... this is about the E-mail that was sent out. It's not a fighting match amongst the fandom blogs. There's enough going on that we don't need to waste time And energy ripping on each other.
Sit back, take a breath, and let the water go under the bridge.

Well, I never said everything about the 25th Anniversary was bunk. Actually, the only things about it that I dislike are just what Peppercom's been spewing out. However, I love the fact that Playmates is re-issuing the classic toys (even if they, sadly, aren't really selling very well... at least from what I can tell in my area) and, sure the NECA figures are superior, but I'm still glad that Playmates is going to be releasing its own line of Mirage figures (it beats the heck out of "Gangsta Rap Donatello" or "CGI Movie Turtles pretending to be Back to the Sewer Turtles"). And though I've heard people complain about the way the Season 7 set of the OT is being released, I have to admit that I kinda like the idea (and the special features on those discs sound awesome). Plus, we'll be getting the Forever War from Archie, as well as some Mirage TPBs (or so I've heard)! And even a DTV movie (which, if the rumors about it are true, will be incredibly awesome).
So, really, I'm not against the 25th Anniversary at all. I'm just against Peppercom and their utter uselessness. They haven't contributed much (if anything at all) to the overall "shellebration". They're not just ripping off Mirage by providing them with crap for an ad campaign despite having been paid a million dollars, but their "news" about the 25th Anniversary isn't showing us all the... well, news! All the cool stuff I mentioned about the 25th Anniversary? Ya, none of that is even mentioned on Peppercom's TMNT25 site. Instead, what do we get? We get "news" of four clowns dressed up in embarrassing Ninja Turtle pajamas driving around to different places to do... I don't even know WHAT they're trying to do, actually, outside of disgracing our beloved mutant terrapins and furthering the stereotype that the TMNT as a whole is nothing but mindless, uninteresting kiddy-fair. This was the reason I said that nothing would actually be better than this. Because this actually does hurt the TMNT.
You might think, "Well, who cares what the public thinks, anyway?", right? But, that's the thing. Hurting the TMNT's public image DOES have effects that are damaging to us, as well. Let's take a look at Transformers. It, like TMNT, also had a campy cartoon in the 1980's that, while fondly remembered, was still very much kind of mindless kiddy-fair. Now, my personal gripes with the live-action Transformers movie aside, Transformers managed to still create things recently (like said live-action movie) that have given it a reputation of "cool" and "grown-up". What I'm trying to say is that Transformers has been trying to not only market itself to kids, but to adults as well (and from what I've heard, it seems the same will be happening pretty soon with G.I. Joe). TMNT, on the other hand, is only doing the former. While the CGI movie was at least a little dark and serious, that aspect of the film was not represented AT ALL in the trailers in TV spots. What was? Michelangelo burping. I think part of the reason that I initially liked that CGI movie so much at first (my opinions on it have changed since then) was because the trailers and TV spots really gave me extremely low expectations.
I guess Perppercom can really only partly be blamed for all of this, thinking back on it. Because it seems that Mirage itself isn't trying very hard to reach a wider audience. They're trying too hard to pander ONLY to children, but what's worse is that Peppercom, who seems to also be doing the same thing, is additionally also underestimating children. Playmates is failing so horribly because they're not listening to its fans, and both them and Peter Laird basically just say, "We know what kids want, and we're doing this for them, not for you." But guess what? Kids don't want any of this crap, and their parents are the ones that decide whether or not they get it in the first place, anyway.
As some have already said, this lame marketing campaign is a wasted opportunity to celebrate and advertise the original TMNT from the comics. A version of the Turtles that, I think, might actually get a lot more people interested. The problem is that too many average people don't even know this version of the Turtles exist, or if they do, they don't know anything about them and probably just assume them to be no different from the ones from the OT. :(
Okay, I think I totally ranted there.

But the kids want Ben 10 and Bakugan!!!
Heck! Last Sunday I was browsing TRU. No 25th Anniversary figs here
there were 10 or so kids that were browsing the A-fig aisles.
4 were looking for Bakugan. 3 were looking for Ben 10 and 2 were looking for Transformers. 1 was looking for Tech Deck ramps and stuff...
None of those 10 kids went for TMNT... (In fact the TMNT toys had a thin layer of peg warming dust on them, almost as bad as the Hasbro Marvel Legends Banshee and Emma Frost that are still floating around my area's TRU...)
