I feel old...

Every year I re-watch the series from start to finish. Part of a tradition that started in school.

I'm up to the dregg episodes....and it just hit me. I was thinking how good these shows should look on DVD since their not that old, and then I got into doing some addition. 1995-2009 is 14 years....

I STILL remember being pissed at the premier of 'New Mutations', episode 4 of 1995 season. The Pope was in NY and they pre-empted the show for that. Ugh. I'm just lucky that CBS re-ran it, which at that point in time, they often didn't.

I can't believe its been 13 years since the original cartoon ended. I still remember waking up saturday mornings and watching CBS to see new TMNT episodes.

Hopefully the rest of the show gets out on DVD soon, its almost like I re-live my childhood everytime I watch through those old episodes again.

Same with the original 3 movies, and to a lesser extent the Archie series since I had that as a kid.

I wonder how I'll feel about the 2k3 series a number of years from now, and if I'll get nostalgia from that too once it becomes fairly old. I didn't get into the Mirage comics until I was a teen, so that's more recent for me as well.

lots of things are weirding me out about my age these days... I'm 27, my friends are having babies everywhere, and while I think I'll make a good father someday...today is not that day.

The thing that really threw me for a loop the other day was the realization that my nephew is about to turn 13. I held that kid in my arms the day he was born...WEEEEEEEEEIRD!

I figure the way things will be is me and my brother still living at home with the parents, taking care of each other into old age. The possibility of finding that someone and doing the baby-making seems very minute at this point in life...

Why not? We can say the TMNT concept was born in 1983, the Mirage comics in 1984, the first TMNT cartoon in 1987, the Archie comics in 1988, the movies in 1990 and so on.

I really didn't start hearing about TMNT until the year when the old cartoon first premiered which was in 1987. I was about...-thinks- 3-4 years old, around there. I wasn't as into them at that point because I didn't watch the show that much, but maybe about in 1988 was when I started to watch them more. Geez, I would even remember boys for years when I was a child would use that old stereotype, "Girls don't watch TMNT it's a boy show" kind of thing. :tlol:

wow I just turned 25 (shut-up I know I'm getting old!) and I don't even remember the turtles when they first came out. In fact I didn't get into the turtles till I was older and they had them on the USA cartoon Express line up during the 90's. In fact if it wheren't for the USA Cartoon Express I wouldn't be a turtles fan because I wouldn't have gotten into it with out them.

Same goes for alot of other 80's shows, like Jem, And the Real Ghostbusters and J.I Joe, ect. I owe it all to USA Cartoon Express...but yeah what where we talking about...? Oh yeah we people born in the 80's are getting old that's for sure.

Can"t speak for anyone else. But I'll be 45 in a few weeks. I was lucky enough to be alittle older when the toys were released. I bought almost my entire collection right off the shelf. If you guys could have seen the toy stores then. Nothing but rows and rows of TMNT figures.

Most of you had and played with these toys as children. I think that is fantastic that you want to remember your youth with the toys of your childhood. I do the same thing with the toy line I grew up playing with. Has anyone here ever heard of Mego's. Great toyline from the 70's. Tough to say which I like more, the toys I played with as a kid or the toyline that turned me into a die hard toy collector.

well, i do remember the good ole days with the rows and rows of TMNT figures, not like these days where it's hard to find anything TMNT. and i can't speak for everyone here, but i'm not just remembering my youth with toys, cause that TMNT show was freakin' amazing, so i've been remembering my youth (hell, i'm not in a second childhood, i never left the first!) by trying to collect my old fav shows on dvd

I respect the history of this place even if I wasn't here for most of its existence. I may not agree with everyone on this board with everything, but I respect everyone here because like me they are all old turtle fans still active on an old message board during the age of social media. In fact, I don't even use social media. The drome is all I need to learn about what's happening that is not in the news. I despise social media. I wish that I would have known about this place back then. I was only active on a skateboard message board when this place first started. To me there is something punk rock about being such a huge fan of a goofy franchise and still use an ancient message board to talk to other fans during this day and age. It's going against the grain I feel.

I miss those days. I was still living in Mexico when I found the Drome. Back then the 2K3 cartoon was still new and hasn't quite reached our side of the continent yet. Between the 2K3 cartoon, new action figures and Volume 4/Tales 2. Then Mexico randomly started airing the Red Sky eps and it was awesome to learn more about them from here. And then there was Dr. Spengler's blog that helped me catch up on all the Mirage stuff.

Then I was there for Fast Forward, Back to the Sewers, the CGI movie, Turtles Forever... and later on the new IDW comics, 2012 show and ugh... the Bay movies.

It's been a ride.

Sadly for now, not counting the modern day crap, all we have left are new NECA figures, the videogames (which came and went by now) and the IDW comics.

It's like it starts around the first four years after High School. You look back and realize that High School was four years ago - the same number of years you were in High School.

From that point it's like the chronometer stops following a cadence and just speeds up even more with each rotation.

It's also because now we've went through multiple revivals of the TMNT franchise.

The early 2000's were exciting because Mirage came back with Vol. 4, the 2003 cartoon came out our first new cartoon since the original, toys/videogames, and eventually the 2007 movie.

Then in 2011/2012 the Nick era started with the IDW comics and 2012 cartoon. But since then we went through 3 major reboot periods and since then we've been in a lull. It just feels a lot of the "excitement" for the TMNT franchise is now in the past. We went through 4 decades of TMNT after all.

it's hard to stay interested when it's the 8th reboot.
2012 was likely the last time I was fully hyped for a TMNT anything.
Even if some were done badly pretty much most stories or ideas have already been done. And between all the different versions at least some of them have done them either great or just fine.
We've seen plenty of new ideas fail and succeed. It's hard to get excited anymore.
Not just TMNT but any franchise that's been done to death.

I'm just happy that this little obscure band of comic book heroes managed to hang on over the decades. It's nice to pop into Hot Topics or Spencers and still see TMNT T-shirts, mugs, posters, towels, etc. And during Christmases and birthdays, my friends and family know exactly what to get me. Anything with TMNT, a horse or LOTR on it. Usually TMNT prevails.

This is a good point. That was a very exciting period, and it was fun watching both versions tell their stories and seeing the occasional parallel thinking and different takes.

The most positive times in my memory:

*1988-1991 : The heyday. Everyone was a Turtle fan. TMNT cartoon, toys, comics, video games were all the rage. This will never end, right?

*1996 : So many things were circulating. The mysterious, ever elusive TMNT 4... or would it be NT:TNM? We don't know! Image Comics, the possibilities there.

* 2000 : Eastman sells his half of the rights to Peter... and suddenly there's a Vol. 4 of the comics?! And a new cartoon that's supposedly more in line with the Mirage comics? Talk of a new fourth movie deal being bandied about?! Exciting times. More possibilities.

* 2007 : Heading toward the release of TMNT 4... oh boy, is this gonna be great?!

* 2009 : The news of Mirage's sale to Viacom/Nickelodeon was not good news to anybody... but now, the possibilities! What happens next? Nobody knows! Who will win the TMNT comic book license? What will the first Nickelodeon cartoon look like, or when can we expect it? Will what they want to put out be gritty or kiddy? Will this somehow end up being a blessing in disguise? Nobody knows yet!

* 2011 : IDW wins! Now will the comic be gritty, kiddy, or some kind of jambalaya of everything? We don't know yet! Let's find out.

* 2014 : Maybe, just maaaaybe this 2014 TMNT movie might turn out OK. They "fixed Shredder" after all, right?

That's it, really. And almost all of those are followed by immense, sometimes earth shaking-level disappointment. But at those particular vertices of time... there was excitement and hope.

I'd mark the END of various TMNT golden ages as such:

* 1993 : The release of TMNT III. Even as a kid, coming out of the theater felt like I'd just gone to a wake. Turtlemania was already hurting by that point but that honestly felt like the final nail to me.

* 1999 : The end of Image TMNT and NT:TNM. Well, now what? This felt like an end and for about a year, it sure was.

* 2009 : For obvious reasons.

* 1993 : The release of TMNT III. Even as a kid, coming out of the theater felt like I'd just gone to a wake. Turtlemania was already hurting by that point but that honestly felt like the final nail to me.

* 1999 : The end of Image TMNT and NT:TNM. Well, now what? This felt like an end and for about a year, it sure was.

* 2009 : For obvious reasons.

Interesting, for me 1993 was still Turtlemania to me, but then again I was too young, so I had just discovered the turtles "recently". I was completely in love with everything TMNT until Power Rangers came out, but I still held to loving the TMNT for years, it was around 1996 when I realized turtlemania was dead (as was power rangers). This is when I moved on to Dragon Ball and then I moved on to Pokemon in 1999.

Yeah same here. I wasn’t exposed to TMNT until ‘93 (my parents actually have a home video of me seeing the toys for the first time when we were on vacation with another family who had a slightly older kid.)

Had a TMNT birthday party in ‘95 and got most of the NES games used.

I think I was still into Power Rangers in ‘96 which led to Beetle Borgs, Mytic Knights of Tir-Na-Nog and of course The Next Mutation. Me and the fellas all thought it was quite cool, and by this time the 1990 movie had aired on network television a couple times.

Wasn’t until Pokemon and Beast Wars that I realized it was totally dead.

For me Turtle Mania died with TMNT III but still lived just a bit longer when that SNES Tournament Fighters came out. That felt for me like the last hurrah.

While the franchise was definitely waning by 1993, I'd say 1996 is a good cut-off point.

- Mirage Volume 2 ended in 1995.

- Archie TMNT Adventures ended in 1995

- Fred Wolf cartoon ended in 1996

Once those 3 series ended by 1996, it was basically the end of the original run of Turtlemania. Then of course 1997 was Next Mutation and Image, but that was basically during the "dead years" where they were trying to keep it going.

It was considered at large like a baby version of Street Fighter, for people who suck at Street Fighter. Which was kind of sad, in a way. Not unlike "playing" the TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG by yourself, because other actual TMNT fans who want to play a tabletop TMNT RPG don't really exist.

When I was a kid I remember beating Streetfighter 2 multiple times on medium difficulty. I have never beat any of the Tournament Fighters games ever period. Those games are super difficult to me. Especially the Genesis one.
