View Full Version : Is a 5th Turtle necessary?

Hero

In my years of TMNT indulgance, I have seen fan-creations, honourary members, and token females etc added ontop of a popular foursome lineup.

IMO Personally, I prefer the Turtles as the quartet dynamic they have always been. Nothing against the fantasy character of a 5th member, but I like my TMNT being the 4 brothers they have always been since day one. The gang have never needed a 5th brother/sister before and have plentiful non-turtle back-up whatever the situation they are in.

To me a 5th Turtle has always worked when that turtle has been a renegade (Tokka, Slash, Hans, Fritz, Metalhead), but as an ally I can't buy into it.

So my question to you all is, Do you think a 5th Turtle is neccessary?

There has already been a fifth turtle and her name was Venus from the Next Mutation.

Well, in the original toon, there was Zack. ;)

No, I don't believe a fifth turtle is nessecary.

But if there was a fifth turtle, I'd rather he be someone who has no clear alliance. Sometimes he'd be on the turtles' side, sometimes on the side of the foot. Just someone who would side with anyone if it benefits him.

There have been so many 5th turtles.

Zach
Slash
Tokka
Venus

:D

P.S. I'm sure someone will list more that I forgot about.

I've always liked Benvenuto, he's easily the most well thought out of the fan-made 5th turtles. But no, it's not necessary.

The turtles were complete in their awesomeness from day one...no need for a fifth. It's like having a "Third Mario Brother":lol:...it just wouldn't fit.

Zach was like the old cartoon version of Cody. I honestly don't remember who Hans or Fritz are.

I like how you think. That makes more sense than adding a 5th turtle to the core group like they did with the Next Mutation.
I don't think they are necessary, but having a fifth turtle occasionally in the mix is nice. I really like Slash though, to me he IS the defenite fifth turtle, and serves as a perfect doppleganger for the turtles.

On one hand I'm rather happy with just the four turtles without any additions. On the other hand, I think a fifth turtle could be done rather well if time and effort were put into the thought process. Instead of how they threw Venus in there. It just seemed a little too ... I don't know, like they wanted to re-write and say "oops, we missed a turtle!". I think he/she would have to have a different origin all together..maybe even not 'ooze' related. And I definitely don't think he/she should be added to the group--maybe an associate, but independent on their own story. Don't even have to be a ninja, frankly.

I've seen a lot of fan renditions and ...I don't know, I haven't paid attention to all the stories to know whose are good and not. I know there's a lot of decent drawings of fifths out there though.

Hanz and Fritz were the wrestling turtles from the stupid season 4 episode "Planet of the Turltes" not to be confused with "Planet of the Turtleoids".

i agree...Slash IS the fifth turtle...however i prefer his comic/figure look to how he appeared in the original cartoon...

although ill never think of the word binky without thinking of slash lol

In an amusing special of the Archie comics, April became a 5th turtle for a while.

But no. No need for a 5th turtle. At all.

I meant Turtles, smart ass.

And Murphy (aka Dean Clarian) is a Mirage employee who used to have a popular blog called the 5th turtle.

A fifth turtle is fine as far as fan-fiction goes. But in the canonical universe of TMNT, is a fifth turtle necessary? Not really when you consider that the world is filled with millions of different animal species that one could be selected from to form a new mutant/anthro character.
So really, why stick with just turtles?

It's more of a childhood thing, I suppose.

The majority of kid Turtle fans have that same desire. 'I wanna be a Ninja Turtle when I grow up!'

When I wanted to grow up, I wanted to be a mutant so I could feed off rats in the sewer. *odd child*

But yeah, I'm with Ryona. If the cannon wanted a new main character, just chuck in one of the anthro characters or another human (that is not a Mary Sue... dear god...)

I've never liked the idea of a fifth turtle in canon. Even Slash is a bit iffy to me, but that could be because I never cared for Slash in the old toon. The old show had to many "dumb as a brick" characters in the OT that it was pretty redundant by the time Slash came along.

No, four is enough.

Scandia

Absolutely not.

I am aware that Ninjitsu comes from Japan. I am aware that in Japan (and various other East Asian countries), the number 4 is considered with lucky because of its linguistic similarity to "death". I am aware this is the reason why sentai teams often have 5 members.

But this takes place in America, where this superstition would not be very well known by the mainstream population of northern European ancestry.

I do not see why it would be necessary to have a 5th Turtle. And there is a 5th member already- Splinter.

Slash rocked in the "Turtles in Time" video game, as one of the toughest bosses to defeat. No more.

Ah, Artobiography. I love that book. Y'know I'm pretty sure that Slash was inspired by the concept art for a 5th Turtle. Was he already a toon when they were working on this concept art, or did he come way after? As far as the question goes, no 5th turtle is needed but there are lots of ways to be able to write it in. The TCRI canister did break into the sewer, who's to say that goop didn't get to some other animals that happened upon it? Maybe other rats, cockroaches, flushed goldfish(undead mutant fish sounds cool). The fact remains that it wasn't written like this though, so no dice i think.

I always liked the idea of a female mutant turtle, but as a canon it ruins the isolation the turtles have with the world, being they only have each other.

But now how volum 4 is i think it could be fitted in nicely with good writing, when Mikey seems to have reproduced will it really be weird having a female mutated turtle with two toes and three fingers? ... don't answer that:lol:

but all in all there is no need for a fifth addition to the ninja turtles team

mutants are supposed to be a rarity, so it should be kept to a minimum, or are the Utroms just as sloppy as humans when it comes to toxic waste?

Looking up the episode list, "The Fifth Turtle" was the title of episode 26, 1989 season, and it was about Zach.

Of course Zach wasn't really a fifth Turtle, he was fan service!

No, I think the Turtles should just be four. The only fifth Turtle I'll accept is Ben because he's just cool. But as for the show, no fifth Turtle for the guys. They should just be four.

Mikey's kids won't count (if they are Mikey's kids). They're gonna look like dinosaurs with shells or something.

I don't know... Mikey just seems so much more human. Out of all 4 turtles, for some reason it just makes sense that Mikey would be the first to find love and bear children.

I don't think a 5th turtle is really needed. Honestly, if there was a 5th turtle in the canon TMNT universe (with the exception of Venus), it kind of destroys the concept of the TMNT when it comes to their brotherhood that we all know and love.

I don't consider Slash to be the "5th Turtle", he's a villain.

Venus? No.

I know Zack was created so kids could identify with him because of the "When I grow up, I wanna be a Turtle!" but he is one of the most annoying cartoon characters of all time, and his voice doesn't help.

There's no need for a "5th Turtle" at all, unless you count April as an honorary turtle.

I am not 100% against a 5th turtle, but all the previous attempts have fitted about as well as a set of balls on a pole dancer.

Slash was cool, but I would have preffered if the 5 had grown up together and somehow he had turned rogue.
