As an artist, I can see where they're going with this. Yeah, they're just sketches, but you can still see the style they're going to be using and can easily imagine what the finished products might look like. They're like teasers.

I can't wait to see the finished artwork.

Oh piff.. I like these. Kind of creative, expressive. Of course, they could be preliminaries that have yet some changes to undergo before the final designs.

The first one on Mike reminds me of Image style.. mhh... but I like how the others sketches on the BHMstudies look. In'taresting duds!

I wish! Best darn comic company out there IMHO. I was blown away by these sketches alone, very angulair anime, witht hat urban look...almost akin to a little bit of the style Im trying right now.

I just bought the latest TMNT Mirage issue...and to say the art sucks is an understatement(Hmmm, square blocks with bandanas, and even worse Picaso looking people...IVe seen sprite rip webcomics look better) so I cannot wait for the real new TMNT comic! Just curious when its comic out.
In the 15 years Ive been a fan, this has to be the coolest look Ive ever seen given to the TMNT.

So you guys really feel the blocko, over stimpled pap that passes as a TMNT comic in the year 2003 is better designed then the sketches shown on this thread? I mean Im all for the 80's, but modern updates on the 80's, not living in 1985 art styles. (IMHO tho, the 85 series has even better art then the current TMNT comic)

Have you guys seen the Dreamwave Transformers comics? Youre saying TMNT is better with bad black and white art, over astonishing jaw dropping color manga style? Ohhkay.

But yeah I wish I worked for Dreamwave, Ive been blown away by their stuff since 1998. However...they are in Canada, Im in Calfornia.
Um...so how do I work for them? I buy their comics nad mention how kick ass they are if that counts.

Anyways, just surprised people like the new TMNT cartoond esigns over the old ones, but dont like the idea of modern cool anime style TMNT over the 1985 look.

You said that those sketches look better to you than Original Mirage. Well it's your opinion. And Im sure that nothing that Dreamwave can do will ever top the the original Mirage art, [Yes I have read scans of dremwave armada]. But of course the taste of art is diffrent for everyone. Like I said some people like Next mutation.

It can be a good comic book series if done right, But as said, I need to see few issues before I can say anything about it. Still those scketches don't impress me at all. Want to see good sketches? Go to Laird's Blast from the past page.

Laird's BFTP has very few "rough sketches". Mostly, there's old finished pieces and polished sketches. (Great stuff.) Show me something there that still has the guide lines in tact, then we'll compare.

Have you guys seen the Dreamwave Transformers comics? Youre saying TMNT is better with bad black and white art, over astonishing jaw dropping color manga style? Ohhkay.

Dreamwave did an excellent job with Transformers, but you have to keep in mind that there is a miriad of artists on the various Transformers books. James Raiz does an excellent job with Armada, Don does an awesome job with the War Within book, and I have to said that I'm disappointed with Pat Lee's take on the Transformers. Sure it's still awesome, but the proportions and everything else is just too distorted. Hardly jaw dropping if you ask me.

But yeah I wish I worked for Dreamwave, Ive been blown away by their stuff since 1998. However...they are in Canada, Im in Calfornia.

I know a lot of people that work for Dreamwave that isn't located in Canada like Pat Lee and the others. But for the record, I don't think these test drawings were that impressive at all. They're hardly "anime" style, and don't look that great. They look like fat men. Then again, we all need something to complain about. And yeah, the new cartoon designs are sometimes lacking if you ask me.

I will defend Lawson's art as well. I'm not the biggest fan of his humans, but he draws and amazing Ninja Turtle. I'm also a huge fan of black and white comics. If they are shaded correctly they look great.

Beaker my biggest beef with you is that your opinions are SO extreme. You either love or completey hate something. Relax a bit, and learn to enjoy things for what they are. Ex: If you don't like the new theme song then avert your eyes and ears during the 30 seconds its on and watch the remaining 22 minutes of splendor that is the new TMNT series.

In addition you flip flop between being an '80s superfan and someone who uses the term "'80s" to mock certain media. Are the '80s good or bad?

As for these pictures, they have potential but they are early drafts, and quite difficult to make out. These series could be great, and I hope it is. But it is much, much, much, much, much too early to claim that it will be the BEST yet.

I also like Lawson's art, sure his humans are a bit weird but his robots, creatures, and especially Ninja Turtles look awesome! The problem with the current Mirage comics is that it's moving to slow, but that should change in a few issues ounce they get into resolving the story arc.

Anyway, back to topic, I can see where they're going with this, I think it looks great, I hope this and the New Tales of the TMNT get here soon, I can't wait.

I just hope that Dreamwave will be able to do something about the story. Man, the story for Dreamwave's transformers comics sucked the big one! They work way too slow. Good thing they called Simon Furman in to do the War Within series, which is the best line they had (It was only 5 issues). It also had the best art as well. Don can really draw some bad ass looking transformers.

First off, Im a BIG fan of black and white indie comics. Be it Slave Labour, Oni Press, etc. Im a big JTHM, Usagi, 80's TMNT Mirage, Miami Mice, etc fan. However, after reading through most of the newer TMNT series, I just cannot get over how it seems to be one of th emost unappealing(aesteetically) comics out there. It looks like Robert Crumb meets some sort of blocko TMNT style. Are those even humans? The few Dreamwave TMNT sketches I have seen are quite astonishing to me...Ive never seen any TMNT art like that. That is the true evolution I feel...the current Mirage series to me wouldnt even had looked decent in the mid 80's I have the collected 80's TPB TMNT Series, and the current series isnt even up to par with that.

I will say the theme song isnt as bad 4 episodes in...I mean its no original TMNT theme song, but the intro is so great that a theme song really cant ruin it.

As for am I for the 80's or not? Its not that black and white. When I say I long for the days of 80's gaming, I dont mean for them to come out with Dig Dug and Mario Bros. again. Notice how the new Metroid, Shinobi, Contra, etc are evolved, new modern takes? Same with the new Transformers comics, the new TMNT cartoon, the new 'fantasy' films(a huge staple of 80's moviegoing) Simply rehashing the 80's would be sad...however doing a modern reinterpretation; now that is what it is all about. Such is why I am more than excited about the upcoming DW comic series.

And Ralph... Really they should know the characters they are drawing...

Raphael-sama

To those who worry about the new TMNT comic's story: Oh, don't worry about that. If I'm not mistaken, is it not Peter David that's writing this? I've heard before that the guy is excellent with this sort of stuff. So no worries there.

It's the ART that has me worried. I'm sorry if you're a fan of the Dreamwave G1 comics, but Pat Lee CAN NOT DRAW. His drawing lack ANY expression, his humans are all just CLONES of eachother, and the entire product looks so bland and rushed that it's not only satisfying, it bogs the story down. Remember: in a comic, the art is more important than the writing. The art is there to make the writing make sense and look GOOD. Pat Lee can't do that. Look at his two comic stint in Armada, and compare it to James Raiz's previous issues. Huuuge difference in quality.

(Then again, what do you expect? The guy's mentor was Robert Leifield, for crying out loud...)

Aztec General

Raph's not fat, he's just on steriods. Note the bulging muscles, and no sign of pudgy flab. :P

I had liked Pat Lee's style in the beginning, until he decided fat Transformers are the norm. Now, there's one 'element' that shouldn't be fat.

Kali
03-11-2003, 11:10 AM
Remember: in a comic, the art is more important than the writing. The art is there to make the writing make sense and look GOOD.
Actually, art and writing have equal balance in a comic. Even the best art won't make a comic good if the script is bad. Likewise, bad art can turn readers away from an excellent story. A comic basically tells a story with pictures, you need both to make the whole thing work.

So, I'm reserving judgement on this new series until I can get a feel for the whole thing.

What are you people talking about? Those designs look FANTASTIC!!

word. I still cant believe how evolved and interesting just the concept designs alone are...judging from his past work, as well as other Dreamwave titles, I have a feeling art and story wise this will be nothing short of astonishing. Just wait, when this finally comes out(anyone have a release date?) put this and the newer Mirage series side by side...

Second, for those that dont like the breathtaking new Transformers comics, check out the less than stellar recently released TPB' of the 80's TF comic...
if they had had that 'Amerimanga color' styled TF back then I woul dhave fainted.

Thirdly, a great story cant make up for bad art. The newer TMNT Mirage series for example...the story is pretty cool, but its mired in what I would say is the worst TMNT illsutrations since early Archie TMNT. A shame, as I have a lot of older Lawson TMNT work which seems much better...what happened?

True dat, homey... er I mean I agree with you, my friend.
One of my favorite Comics was DC's Supergirl, during the Peter David written story arc (the one of the Satanic Cult) And I followed it for years... Untill they got a bad artist... So In otherwords, I feel it goes both ways... You NEED both for a comic to be good!

Another Example is TopCow's Battle of The Planets... the art is perfect for the series, but the writing is terrible!! And that imo is "horrific" :P

HFS!!! And I thought the new TMNT cartoon designs rocked...these designs IMHO blow everything Ive seen away(and that includes the 80's Mirage stuff) I hat eto use this expression, but these new TMNT designs look sick as all get out.

I'm sorry, but I have a problme thinking these are legit. The artist is Pat Lee, correct? That really doesn't look like his tyle or signature.
Um... as Rat King just said, that's because the artist is Sean LeThomas, not Pat Lee.

CookSux

Now, whoever thought that these sketches were done by Pat Lee must be blind. Even the signature says Les. Then again everyone assumes that just because Dreamwave is doing something that Pat Lee has his fingers on it... and that's partially true. I bet Pat Lee's going to want to do some covers, and a couple books. That cocky punk! Haha.

1) Pat Lee had been previously connected as the artist to this series.

2) "LeS" looks a lot like "Lee" if you don't look very carefully and you are expecting to see "Lee"

1) That's what I've been told, but if you read the information on LeS' webpage, he clearly states that he's the one doing the book.
2) It does, but if you know that Pat Lee's signature looks different, then that's a whole different thing altogether.

Now getting back to the subject, I still don't like LeS' work too much. You can find his stuff on his webpage http://lesean.defuser.net/ or the "secret" folder http://lesean.defuser.net/art with other works. That's where I found the 'Ralph' picture.

Beaker has a point, I too wonder what happened to Lawssons style. Hi TMNT are still great, but backrounds and especially human charcaters need some serious work.

Yeah, I SO did not mean to diss LAwson's legacy with the TMNT. I have almost all his 80's TMNT work and think its some of th ebest Mirage released stuff next to the Eastman/Laird stuff. However, Im not sure if he does both the pencils and inks...but my three complains are:
way too much stimpling(the dots everywhere thing), the turtles look like square blocks, and those humans...oh man.

As for the Pat Lee thing, he was connected to the project as far as Dreamwave is practically Payt Lee's baby. Same way Stan Lee is connected to Marvel stuff. And yes, these are just early preliminary sketches, but I find something so refreshing with em...yeah they are a bit more strange anime urban style, but its new and unique. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE the new TMNT character designs on the new cartoon...but this will frther broaded the TMNT revival for folks who still think "TMNT is kiddy shite". Think about it, this could really pave the way for some cool stuff that previously wouldnt even been touched upon(Dreamwave titles can be very dark and violent)...and if nothing else gives us more TMNT media to celebrate in 2003!

My only problem is I cant fidn any news on this on the official Dreamwave site, and have no idea when we can expect this comic.

Pencils can be about as influential on the final outcome of a comic as a bunch of stick figure drawings. It's the inks and tones that'll determine the look and design of the end product. For example, the old Mirage issues Jim penciled that Kevin and/or Peter inked for were phenomenal. As for why Jim's stuff (especially in drawing humans) seems to have degraded since then, it might just be Peter who's lost it, seeing as how he's the main ink&toner. Looking back on old Jim work for comparison(at the moment, Sons of the Silent Age), it seems more likely that the current Mirage comic style resembles Peter's more than Jim's. He always did have sorta a "blocky" style anyway, and his toning quality seems to have lessened some :P

As for the Dreamwave studies, I like their dynamic look, though I don't think I could stand that fat, froggy-looking Leo for very long. That squint-eye facial expression style is being done in current comics/cartoons ad nauseum, too.

..."Mike is a cobble shell". What brought that on? *thumbs through old Mirage books*

Karpo_007
03-12-2003, 11:27 PM
So the inks can make that much a diffrence? I have noticed that the style of corrent volume resebles the planet racers series. But I can't belive Laird's lost it just yet.

CookSux
03-12-2003, 11:45 PM
The inks make a lot of difference. Aside from the penciller just putting in the rough sketche lines... the inker cleans everything up, as well as add detail and shadows that weren't present.

That... doesn't sound right. In all the things I've read, the inker just inks over the already existing pencils, cleaning them up, but it's basically the same picture, only darker. It's a lot harder than it sounds, you can't erase ink. Sketch lines can be very distracting. I guess it would depend on the relationship between the penciler and inker, though. If the penciller is fine with the inker altering their work...

But true, inks make a big difference in art, if done right. They make images more intense, crisper, and bring out more details. Inkers also has to take into account whether there's going to be color or not.

Sparvid
03-13-2003, 08:58 AM
For an exapmle on inkers, read Savage Dragon #100. Erik Larsen penciled the whole issue (100 pages) but everything except the first part was inked by different inkers.

Thanx all for your interest in my works. I've been checking my hits and came across this link as its been giving me a huge amount of hits as of late. Thanx for the support!

Just so you guys arent banging your heads against the wall trying to assume and guess and figure out whats what about this series, its a 5 issue mini. Written by Peter David. pencils by me. its directly based off of the new animated series on TV now. as well is the style, so accept it or not

This run is for the fans of turtles PERIOD. Color AND Black and white. For a WIDER audience, Not just a small niche of die hard lovers, respectfully ! ALso, you'll know that Mirage and 4Kids entertainment guides us on strict approval so theres no inconsisencies of the gang. it's not just a Dreamwave-project, its a coolaboration with Mirage.

For Karpo's inqueries. Pick up Dreamwave's "Arkanium" run for questions on my past works. the sketches are my site were a decision leaked through Pat and myself for people who are interested in new turtles stuff. the concepts you see were from august of 2002. so you can make your decisions on the book based off of 6 month old sketches if ya wanna, but be ready for the book when it drops this June ( YES , THIS JUNE!) before you make your final decision! :P

hope that answers your questions. Thats all for now, i wont answer anymore, just keep an eye out for newsarama and Wizard magazine for upcoming ecitement on this hot new project of 2003! thanx again!

Geez... you guys are being borderline mean with your pickiness on LeSean's art style! That's almost like going to Lawson directly and telling him he best match Laird's style more. But you know what Laird will say to that. "If you don't like it, don't buy it"! (aka, build a bridge and get over it) This not a matter of him being tough to our criticism... it's a matter of getting quite fed up with whiney fanboys who don't seem to be happy with whatever they do.

And there are quite a few of 'their eyes' checking here. I don't know how Pwedesai gets away with all the shtuff he does, but the one time out of all my stupidity, I had posted a full scan of one of Laird's new issues.. he promptly found out somehow the next day and emailed me personally to remove it!

Well, I was going to post that I like those sketches (and they're JUST sketches) but then the artist showed up so now I'll just look like a fanboy. :)
But his art is really cool, it has an animation feel to it. The figures have real weight and motion, which is hard to do (just try it). Check out the stuff on that "secret" page, it looks like roughs from an animation project. The guy can draw. But yeah, those Turtle heads look froggy. Hopefully he's changed them in the past 6 months. It's cool he came here. :)

I agree that Lawson has lost something over the years. He's always done stylized stuff, but it's getting too whacked now, and the stippling is overdone.

Anyway, I look forward to this Dreamwave series.

Had to edit because I messed up. What I wrote was I don't think the book can come out in June because we haven't seen it in Previews, and then I realized it's March not April. :)

I like Peter David's writing, but his new Captain Marvel series suXXors. I hope he writes the TMNT ALOT better than that.

The incredible thing is, last April when the new revisioned Transformers Dreamwave titles came to mind immediately I thought of the other kickass 80's thing, the TMNT. I thought how cool itd be to have a modern color manga reinterpetation of the TMNT Dreamwave style. So hearing this news is too cool. The fact its TMNT alone with help sell this new series through the roof. Yeah, Lawson's current series sure AINT no City At War.
I know more than a few people are very disinterested in the current TMNT due to its lack of moderness, such is why this is such a great move for the TMNT. The fact that from the rough sketches alone, Im extremely excited...and Mirage is behind the efforts...(plus look whio they got writing!) this is very very cool.

Well I'd hate to compare it to the Transformers comics, partially because Transformers has a deeper history and variation to it... but here's how Dreamwave managed it...

6 issue mini-series (Generation 1 [original series])
Ongoing series (Transformers Armada [current cartoon])
6 issue mini-series (War Within [takes place before the original series])

Upcoming

6 issue mini-series (Generation 1 volume 2)

that's a lot of books, especially considering that there were nearly 2 variant covers for every issue on average. Now some possibilities for the Ninja Turtles?

Mini-series regarding the TMNT = 1 story arc

Just consider how many story arcs you can make with the turtles, and Dreamwave has itself an infinit amount of mini-series if handled correctly. (They might lose the Transformers license because the sales have been dropping).

Ahh.. I just read a discusion on this in a EZboard TF forums. They said the War Within is based completely off of a Dreamwave story, since it does not use all the etails from the original G1 comic, and also uses some story from the G1 cartoon/movie.

As far as Armada goes... the comic is slightly different from the show (I heard the comic reads much better too). But those redesigns on the old characters are still too weird for this G1 fan, thus I digress from Armada.

Hence... very likely the new TMNT comic might be like the archies. Starts off the same, but goes in a different direction. We'll have to see!

Well the War Within book is totally original, but it is supposed take place before the G1 series... thus most the original characters like Optimus Prime and Grimlock have their Cybertronian bodies, as compared to their reformatted Earth bodies as seen in the original cartoon. The Armada book is based on the cartoon because it uses the same characters, but isn't a direct cartoon to book transfer. The characters themselves are totally unique, even though they have the same names. Most Transformers series are like that, like Beast Wars.
