Why is Next Mutation the only canon Mirage pretends never happened?

Aside from the Mirage stuff, the original cartoon, Archie series, and Movie universes are always re-released.

We have the original cartoon on DVD, re-releases of all 4 movies on DVD and Blu-ray, Archie comic trades and The Forever War, and of course the 2k3 universe is still relatively current.

The Next Mutation is the only one that feels like it was "swept under the carpet," at least in the U.S.

Volume 3 features on the comic section of the site, there's been a few little homages to the Image run in the franchise such as Doctor "Xeinos" as well as things such as Raph's nightmare of being the Shredder and so forth.

Even when Mirage passed on the series being republished it wasn't because they didn't want it to happen but a financial thing (If I remember rightly...I'm sure someone could correct me if I'm wrong or elaborate on the details) Also I don't think anyone at Mirage would have a problem if it were possible to have Gary Carlson finish off his story like Murphy is with the Forever War. Laird is also quite diplomatic when he talks about it and reasoning for relegating it to an Elseworlds tale is sound even if people don't agree that it should be.

The Next Mutation on the other hand is clearly something Laird doesn't like to discuss, for a long time Venus and Dragonloard were removed from the official site and no refences are made to it in the franchise, not even to make fun of it. It's like it never existed.

I personaly don't mind the Next Mutation, I liked East Meets West and the first two Quease episodes but It wasn't succesful, most people arn't even aware of it's existence, most fans don't like it and the guy in charge doesn't either and us dead set against the only new aspect it brought to the table.

Is there any reason why should it be canon?

well the main reason it hasn't been released is because Disney owns the rights. They could release it if they wanted to but they never release DVDs unless they are guaranteed huge sellers. Apparently they don't care if it'd make them money unless its a lot. This is why a lot of series owned by Disney have not been released or were not finished.


As for Venus I haven't watched the show besides the crossover PR episodes but I can't believe it'd be that bad. I like the idea of a female turtle and the dragonlord.


Anyways yeah I'm sure its full of wacky stuff, Its probably on par with the other live action Saban shows from the same time which are enjoyable in their own right. But I think its mostly hated since most of the original fans who loved TMNT had grown up and hated this since it was aimed at a younger audience. I was still a kid when it came out and liked PR so I think I probably would have liked it.

It's not like Laird is going around burning all existing copies of Next Mutation episodes. Hell, there's an entire section about it on the Mirage website, plus behind-the-scenes documentation. Laird just doesn't bring it up unprovoked because, well, it sucks. A lot of decent concepts marred by horrible execution. Can you blame him for not being too interested in it, ten years later? But if asked (as has happened on his blog), he's only too happy to acknowledge that, yes, there was a season of live-action Turtles and a fifth member with breasts and a light-blue headband, and that, no, he did not enjoy it.

As for the DVDs, Mirage doesn't have the rights to the episodes. I can't blame Disney for not releasing it either, because this is to be purchased only by the most die-hard TMNT fans, and even then only to be watched in moments of curiosity and self-loathing.

Volume 3??It may have been retconned out of the Mirage universe, but its not being swept under the rug or anything. Mirage has full summaries and pictures on their website, and even sell back issues online (or used to, I think they sold out).

Laird probably didn't want to have to start the Turtles' comic book revival by finishing another writer's story, especially one he wasn't in to. He's never said he wished it didn't exist, or that no one should enjoy it. Gary Carlson's story simply wasn't his.

Actually didn't TNM do quite good ratings wise? It was just too expensive of a show for Sabin to produce so they dropped it in favor of more cheap Power Rangers shows which at the time was like 40-50% stock footage.

For what it's worth TNM has some of the best suits and designs of early Sabin stuff and easily could have been a worthwhile show with a bit more thought, budget and little less trying to shove it into the Power Rangers mold.

I think a show like that could work better now with the improvements made in the suitimation genre from even a few years ago. I don't follow any of the current Power Rangers nonsense, but I have seen that a lot of the more current shows have better sets, villains and such. But TNM was really done on the cheap, even if it was in fact very expensive for Sabin to produce.

crappy costumes, a chick turtle, a cheesy toyline, poorly made tv show that looked cheaper than power rangers, crappy bad guys with major make up issues (quease looked like a joke)...
i think one of the worst things was leo's "oh were not really brothers" crap just so he could get in bed with venus

I think they should release it. I think it's tolerable. I think the TMNT MMPR in Space crossover was amusing. Why not just consider it a B-movie style of TMNT? Something with good idea potential (ok minus Venus) that was executed horribly with crappy costumes and showmanship.

The show was horrid. It was released in other countries but like others said Disney has the rights and they're bastards. What I don't get about Disney is they can afford to release 1,000 poorly selling DVDs and still be in the good. They just don't. And those disks probably don't cost much to make. The menus are ass and the special features are no where to be found despite there being tags all over the beginning about it. Like the X-Men DVDs for example. They have the "views expressed in the special features aren't those of the makers of the DVD blah blah" in front of every disk before it starts and then when you click on the special features tab it says "Check other disks for special features". All of them say that. Lazy bastards couldn't even fix their template and delete unnecessary stuff out of it.

The only reason it was released outside of the US (like here in the UK) is because Disney isn't in charge of it. It was actually Fox Kids/Jetix (The box says Jetix but on the DVD itself it say Fox Kids) that owns all the rights to it and PR over here so they like to release as much as they can for lots of money. :|

The problem was that they tried to make it too much like the Power rangers, since they were popular at the time, and in fact led to the OT being canceled anyway. To make it PR-esque, they added a new female Turtle and dopey new villains. :(

Also it didn't have the original voice cast and thus made Baby Jesus cry...THRU TIME!!!

Well it wasn't a continuation of the original series so why would it use the same VAs? The original show also wasn't cancelled because of NM, it was already struggling if it wasn't for TNM then the turtles would have just faded away anyway.

Personally I love PR so if its like PR then I'd like it. Though its weird because around that time PR was no longer a fad like it once was


Again I haven't seen it but I am pretty positive this movie is not all bad like people make it out to be.
