how much of a nerd can you get to be able to play games for like 8 hours aday??Just because we like to have safe fun (yeah, it's safer than ruining your life by partying, drinking, and then ending up in the hospital after crashing in a DWI wreck) does not mean we are nerds.

Yeah, I was changing channels and saw a little bit of that show. There's nothing wrong with playing games, but 8 hours a day? Jesus! Did those guys even have jobs or girlfriends? At least one of those dudes made a living being a professional gamer.

you are always so negative. Not everyone does that kind of crap, there are much better things to be doing, like umm.... well you get the point.

Don't get me wrong, 8 hours a day is a bit ludicrous unless you have TONS of spare time, but just simply playing the game online doesn't necessarily mean you don't have a life.

At current, I have neither a job nor a girlfriend, but that's only because:

1) In this current economy it's hard for an 18-year-old with no work experience like myself to find a job and

2) I'm no Prince Charming, so my chances of getting a girlfriend range somewhere within infinitesimal (sp) to "Forget it!"

I have been to several parties and gotten drunk, but I have never been in car wreck. Probably because I know not to drive when I am plastered.

Am I the only one who sees 8 hour gaming sessions as normal? :P I don't think I could stand playing that much each day, but everytime I do play, it's usually for 5-9 hours. And well, some people have to do that for a living y'know. A classmate of mine is a beta tester and his job requires him to play games for 12 hours each day, 3 days a week.

Good for you, Matthew. Sadly, you're missing the point.

It really enrages me whenver somebody finds out that I play video games a lot in my spare time (either that or MAKING them) and deem me as a friendless geek. My point was that just because someobody plays video games it does mean they're "squares", or whatever. Heck, I've seen the exact same type of people I described above in video arcades more often that I have!

Sorry to get off track, but biases towards game players like that really push me over the edge.

I do see your point. I don't think people who play games are nerds, it's the people who play games 10 hours a day and do nothing but that who are the dorks. But, hell, the first time I played Medal of Honor, I started at 9 in the morning and didn't quit until 1 at night.

I can understand what you are saying, some people treat me that way when they hear I play games, I never go anywhere near 8 hours (Unless its a new Metroid game :P )
But a woman came in to work one day, and over heard me and my friend's wife talking about the TMNT game that came out for NES, and she started telling us to get a life, and how sad our lives are etc... I was REALLY angry, and needless to say, took it out on her  (Still do everytime I see her, and that was 4 years ago)

I understand that. And I don't have problems with gamers in general (except my brother, but that's because his EverQuest addiction eats my internet time.) Games can be lots of fun. Lots of great webcomics have come from it.

It's the people who make it their "life" that, well, worry me. All things in moderation. It's not that they play games for 8 hours a day that makes them dorks, it's that they brag about it that makes them dorks. No one likes a bragger.

Now, if you're payed to do it, like testing video games, or working in a game shop, that's just cool.

You know, there are those out there who are actually payed to play video games, they're called game testers; for them, playing a game for 8 hours a day is virtually the same as working a full time job.

Of course, playing the game is not the only thing they do. They write reviews, point out bugs and other such things for the makes to fix before putting the game on the market.

Heh, the dream job for one person I know... should point this job out to him and see what he thinks.

Videogames enrich the heart and soul. I have a friend that plays games for literally days on end. He stops only to relieve himself and to eat. He's beaten games in record time. I actually saw him get into a fight because someone said some **** about Mario.

Of course, he lost the fight and was brutally beaten by the quarterback. And he's frail, pale, and has severe stomach cramps from brooding in his cavernous basement all day.

Yea well I hope he learned to expect to get brutally injured if he starts talking about video games in front of a jock and expects to win a debate or something, lol... That is just plain dumb, if you want to argue about video games, argue with your own kind...

Dont you know, its 2003, where everyone now thinks being a geek is hip. Just look anywhere online. Me, who liked it better when it wasnt so mainstream to be a nerd.

The longest I've played games for is about 9 hours one weekend. My brother and I played Half-Lif: Decay on PS2 and the 2 Resident Evil games on GC. Eventually played and beat Devil May Cry. And then got pretty far on Metroid Prime. But....every day?

I love video games and I play for a couple of hours a day. Do I get payed to play them? Well kind of. I play in tournaments with cash prizes. Right now I'm on a team for a Battlefield 1942 national tournamnet with a grand prize of $6000, and a brand new computer for each person on the team. Even though we suck and most likely won't win it's still fun.

Well, I play lots of games, but almost never multiplayer, cos' I'm not that good. I prefer single player games, and of course, editing games. In fact, I rarely buy games that you can't edit, because for me, that greatly expands a game's life. Which is why I'll never buy a console.

I regularly play video games for hours at a stretch. Not so much lately, because my job is physically demanding and I come home only to collapse in a heap, but when I'm sick or on weekends I regularly play for hours at a time. Some games more than others. Whenever a new Mario, Zelda or wrestling game comes out, it immediately sucks away my time. I remember when I actually started playing the original Zelda for the first time back in 98 (late bloomer, I know), my schedule for a week was like "school, get home at 2:30, Zelda until 7 or so, eat dinner, play Zelda, look up and realize it's 2 in the morning, sleep, wake up at 6:30, shower, school, repeat". Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy 7 fell under that category too.

To me, it's normal. Then again when I was a kid and the NES first came out, video games were like THE thing among me and my friends. I'm still friends with a lot of them, and through high school not much changed. A lot of them played soccer, basketball, ran track, wrestled, and still played video games on a daily basis. They got jobs and girlfriends with no more trouble than anyone else, and still played video games. Most of them are getting out of college now and we still talk about what new games we can't wait to play. Just because someone plays video games often doesn't make them a "dork" or a "nerd", and it doesn't mean that's *all* they do, either. I mean I read, write, draw, listen to music, lift weights, hold down a job and am engaged, and a 6-8 hour video game session isn't unusual for me either. Diff'rent strokes, people.

B'sides, I dare say I get teased far more often for liking Ninja Turtles than I do for playing games a lot. Just sayin'.

Thanks. Yeah all the sudden in this day and age every late teen to mid twentysomethigner is claiming 'geekhood', BS I say. My people, the real deal, had to suffer all through high school...these people, who get 'insta-indivisuality' prepackaged at Hot Topic and blab in their livejournals are the true definition of poser. Now all the sudden everyones claiming 80's nostalgia, tech know how, RPG/video gaming, etc.

They hijacked what it really means to be individualistic...so Im sorry, watching Invader Zim, having a love for the Game Cube, and spouting off 80's references and '1337' online lingo doesnt mean sqaut.
