View Full Version : Raphael or Raphael?

In every incarnation of the turtles, Leo, Mike, and Don are basically portrayed the same. But Raph was either the angry badass in the comics, movie, and new toon, or the wise ass in the OT. Which is your favorite Rapheal ?

NEXT POLL: Michaelangelo, the laid-back surfer or Michelangelo, the ritalin kid?
But, seriously... Please fix those misspellings. They're making my eyes itch. >_<
Anger-issues, angst-ridden Raph ftw! Wise-crackin' old Raph's character wasn't too distinct from Mike and Don since they also cracked jokes, as did Leo sometimes too, I suppose. So badass :x Raph for me.

I am a Raph fan because of the "Cool but Crue (or is it rude....I'm never positive)" Raph of the OT so, I'mma go with Rob Paulsen's Raph. (Like there was any doubt right?)

I prefer Mirage Raphael, though classifying him as the "angry, badass" really makes him kind a a caricature of who he really is as a character.
But it's what you gave me so it is what I voted for.

This thread had a very amusing aspect to it but then GK came along and ruined the title!
The poll and the first post are still great though.

I'm not sure, but I think Archie Raph was more on the angry side...
I was thinking the same thing. Archie Raph was the constantly peeved version of his cartoon basis. Clown, he ain't.

Definitely OT. I don't mind watching the bad ass version, just because it adds for character for the group. But man, when I see OT Raph it's just awesome to see (episode 2 "Enter the Shredder") You can be sarcastic even in an angry way!

While I respect the need for a more dramatic character in serious versions, I find old toon Raph much less irritating, and usually pretty funny. So that's my personal preference.
NEXT POLL: Michaelangelo, the laid-back surfer or Michelangelo, the ritalin kid?Unlike Raphael, this actually has a correct answer.

I'm not too familiar with the comics, but the 2k3 toon I thought did a nice job of balancing an angry Raph and a sarcastic one at the same time. Gotta love the bold line "Karai should stab Leo more often!" Either way, when he's not PO, he often cracks jokes to enlighten situations. So, he's not that far off from his 87 counterpart.
But while Raph became my favorite in the 87 cartoon, the 1990 enraged Raph brought the character to a whole new light, and have since then favored the Turtle always fighting his inner demons.

I'd say the Archie/OT one. I find him much easier to appreciate than the other version.

I think the best would be a mixture of the two. Sometimes sarcastic, sometimes badass (and a little emo.) Kind of like Angel (form the Angel T.V. show.)
Also I agree in that the Old Toon Raph is very different from the Archie Comics version.

While Raphael is my least favorite Turtle in every single version, I tolerate the sarcastic smart-ass of the OT/Archie universes a little more than I do the really angry one of the other versions.

old toon Raphael by a long shot. OT Raphael will have my heart till the end of time. He was witty, cynical, and actually pretty grouchy even though many people deny that he was.
Of the "badass" varity of Raphael's character I likev NT's version of him over the other badass versions. NT Raph's depection of his badassness (is that a word?) was easy on the nerves and he eventually matured and became an all around likable guy. Mostly because he lacked the irritating inclination to storm off on his own like other version of a the "bad ass" type of Raphael's do.
Yeah, he's angsty, yeah, he's in turmoil, and yeah he's tough, but sometimes it can get to the point where it's over wheling for the veiwer.

just why do you think he's irritating?Because being an overly sensitive, borderline sociopathic jerk who can't do anything group oriented gets real grating, real fast.
"Oh. Raph's angry. Again. This is getting real old."
^^So agreed... 4Kids' version of Raph started out as little more than a bad-boy stereotype. As the series progressed, he seemed to act less like he had no self-control. That made him less frustrating in my eyes, but his constant "everything pisses me off" attitude was still very tiresome.

Are we watching the same show? Because it seemed to me, for a while, it was Leo that was acting like he had no self control, or at least, a bit on the gullible side, and Raph saw it, but chose to walk away and come back with a clear head, or with Splinter, to help Leo see the light.

And along came Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers where everything Raph says is either an insult or grouchiness. And he goes a little too out of his way to rag on Mike. seem in 2K3 they pick on each other alot, but in FF/BTTS he's just always badmouthing him even when Mikey isn't doing anything.

I voted for the comic book Raphael, but now that I think of it, the angry, angst filled character is a bit overdone in comic books. Maybe the cartoon version is the way to go this time around, or the Archie version, which is kind of the middle ground between the two.
Are we watching the same show? Because it seemed to me, for a while, it was Leo that was acting like he had no self control, or at least, a bit on the gullible side, and Raph saw it, but chose to walk away and come back with a clear head, or with Splinter, to help Leo see the light.
Yeah, Leo was always a bitt naive, but that's the earmarks of an idealist. For Raph, it was a little of the same, but his macho, hotheaded, 'shoot first and pretend you knew what you were doing later' nature coupled with the fact that he's completely obsessed with his motorcycle plants him firmly in bad-boy territory. As for the self-control, he nearly lobotomized Mikey with a pipe in "Meet Casey Jones". So, as I said, "he started out as little more than a bad-boy stereotype". As for Leo, he and Raph are more alike than they care to admit, but Leo obviously looks before he leaps. So, in "The Shredder Strikes", he had a lapse in judgement, but it wasn't a knee-jerk reaction, which keeps it from being considered a self-control issue. But, in the first half of Season 4, he obviously took the role away from Raph, most obviously when "he took one swipe with his katana, slicjng [Splinter's head]".And along came Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers where everything Raph says is either an insult or grouchiness. And he goes a little too out of his way to rag on Mike. seem in 2K3 they pick on each other alot, but in FF/BTTS he's just always badmouthing him even when Mikey isn't doing anything.
Absolutely. Starting with Fast Forward, it seemed like the occasional 'friendly teasing' he and Mikey used to do was abolished in favor of bitter sibling rivalry, as if they were trying to hurt each other's feelings.

No it wasn't. When Raph was mad about something, it was usually for a good reason. When he would get on Mikey's case, it was for a reason, and let's not ignore the fact that the other Turtles, and Splinter, all have whacked Mikey upside the head for some antic or another. And I think you're getting grouchiness and sarcasm mixed up.
The family dynamic in the Turtles is no different than a human household with 4 young men in it. Have you ever been in the boys dorm rooms at the colleges, or visit your nearest military boot camp, you thought the insults and sarcasm were bad from Raph, then check out those places, and they'll make him seem very tame in comparison.
So, if you love your motorcycle, then you're a bad boy? Wow, you need to come over and meet my boyfriend. He loves his motorcycle, but his personality is just like Mikey's, laid back, likes his movies, having a good time.
As for the self-control, he nearly lobotomized Mikey with a pipe in "Meet Casey Jones". So, as I said, "he started out as little more than a bad-boy stereotype". And this was ripped directly from the comic books. What's the cool twist here, is while most bad boy characters have too much pride to see the error of their ways, Raph did do a self check, and admits he has a problem. This is one of the reasons why he's probably my favorite fictional character of all time. He has his errors, he's not perfect, but he does have a heart.
As for Leo, he and Raph are more alike than they care to admit, but Leo obviously looks before he leaps. So, in "The Shredder Strikes", he had a lapse in judgement, but it wasn't a knee-jerk reaction, which keeps it from being considered a self-control issue. And this is why I refuse to accept FF and BTTS as continuity. The Turtles have completely devolved in those shows, or at least the few episodes I have watched.

I'd have to go with Comic Book Raphael. While the movies and more recent cartoons did a good job at making him look like a hothead, I feel only the comic book made his sudden bursts of "angryness" seem more like he has mental problems instead of just being angry, and I feel like this is an important part of his character, where he can just snap at anytime. The other Raphaels(aside from the TMNT Movie) don't really go deep there and just make him angry.
To prove my point, in the Comic, the first time they went to the farm, April said that, unlike the other turtles, she couldn't feel compassion for Raphael and was scared of him because of his personality. Not any other April would have said that, because the other Raphaels aren't presented as angry as him.
And while it might seem weird for me to prefer the Raphael that seems to be the most dangerous, I feel that's what gives him his own distinct personality, instead of just being the angry turtle.

Good point, and I agree, a potentially dangerous Raph (whom even an usually accomodating April can't really connect with) is interesting.

This is just a completely random, BS question, (there was actual discussion on this at work, and it was kind of interesting to see everyone throw out their own POV and the what if's) but on Heroes, there is the psychopath Sylar. Is the comic book Raph close or have the potential to be as psychopathic as Sylar, or is he already there?

He's not close, nor could he ever be close...because Heroes is written way better than TMNT is.
Raphael is one dimensional. He can only ever aspire to be the angst-ridden-loser-brother, and could never develop further than that.

Hmm, you wouldn't be Ryan whose the master engineer at Lightning Industrial, Technological and Defense, would you? Because you sound just like him. Except, he added the "if there were more competent writers for the comics, then Raph would be borderline to crossing that line of Schizophrenia)

Except, he added the "if there were more competent writers for the comics, then Raph would be borderline to crossing that line of Schizophrenia)Raph is borderline schizophrenic in the early comics. It's hinted at a few times in Volume 1. (Rapheal Micro-Series, "Return to New York," "Leatherhead Too.")
I don't know either way. Don't read the comics. Friends tell me that as a fan of Raph, I wouldn't care much for the comics because he tends to get the shaft in them. How true is this?Depends on what you mean by "tends to get the shaft." Does he get the lime-light a lot of the time? Yes. Do his actions and anger have real consequences? Also, yes.
Your friends were probably referring to "Return to New York" and Volume 4. (And to a lesser extent, Volume 2 maybe?) The first is thematically important, and the latter...every Turtle gets "shafted" pretty hard in Volume 4.
Warhorse
10-21-2009, 07:44 PM
What I meant by Raphael getting "shafted" is in terms of his character development and his role in helping the family out. Both cartoons and all of the movies have depicted a Raph that had his own intentions, but at the same time, is there to pull his weight for his brothers as needed. Friends have said he's not nearly as "heroic" in the comics.
