View Full Version : Would Kevin have sold his half of the rights to Peter...

... if he'd have known Peter was going to sell them all to a big corporation?
I'd say yes. He wanted the money (which there is nothing wrong with).

I agree with Danny. Not that Kevin doesn't love and appreciate the Turtles, but selling them was a means to an end, which was the purchase of Heavy Metal. He sold one dream for another.
I would however, be interested in knowing the difference in price. i.e. what kevin sold his half for vs. what viacom paid.

I thought he already owned it by that point.

As far as I understand, he bank rolled the purchase with that money. (This may equte to "I paid off the enormous bank loan")

Yeah I agree, I wonder how long this deal was in the works, could this have been the reason Peter bought out Kevin completely? What is Kevin's reaction to this deal and not seeing a dime from this buyout?

It must. He purchased Heavy Metal Magazine all the way back in 1992... and didn't sell his half to Peter until 2000.
Though I don't think purchasing Heavy Metal would have been a problem for him in 1992. At all.

Youre probably right, and I very well could be totally wrong.
However, at any rate, there was also the issue of having to co-manage a property with someone he frankly didnt get along with. And that sigh of relief from not having to deal with that anymore was probably worth a lot to him.
Besides, without having spoken to him, judging by how he feels about Pete, he may very well feel that the turtles are in BETTER hands now. This is speculation, but possible.

Sure thing:

Realize now that there wasn't a whole lot of "meat" to my previous comment. Apologies for essentially just tossing a non-sequitur into the fray.
But I'm curious to see if maybe we'll get more of an answer to this thread's question in Kevin's blog.
I'm trying hard not to get my hopes up...

Has Kevin actually made a statement regarding this news yet?
Its an interesting question, but from the little I've read it seems Kevins real passion was Heavy Metal, so thats why he sold to Laird. Yeah he probably liked that he was going to carry the mantle of the turtles and keep it "independent". I can see him getting pissed that Laird just cashed in
Remember that Laird doesn't get the 60 million to himself, first of all 4Kids got 10 million, holy crap thats a ton for a company that only had distribution rights and wasn't going to do anything with the company.

i'd say HELL YES kevin would have sold to nick. It was for money. the only difference between now and then is he probably would have received more this time around since it was Nick not peter who buoght it and Nick has ALOT more money.
i guess i could care less what Kevin has to say since he had his last say when he sold his rights away.
there is NO WAY peter had this deal going before buying out kevin. if that were the case this buyout would have happened YEARS ago not announced today.
i AM shocked that peter did sell it completly but i am happy since Nick usually handles properties well. Hell, they can't do worse than Mirage.

I highly doubt he would have cared/does care. Maybe he'll come out with a statement that'll prove me wrong, but to me it always seemed like the Turtles were something he was just pleasently surprised with. Like, "Oh, my little joke drawing went and made me millions of dollars. That's pretty cool." Heavy Metal and the truly underground comic scene seem like where his heart's at. That, and he loves money. Can you blame him?
