View Full Version : Future of the TMNT website?

Without Mirage involvement and without the rights to the franchise, is there any chance this site will even exist after all the rights are finalized?
If so, this will be a very great loss to TMNT fans. It's a great archive for toys, comics, and the tv shows (with their DVD episode listings). Dan Berger has done a great job with this in both content and communication; without him I don't see a future for it.
If this site goes away, will we lose a definitive TMNT archival source?
Any thoughts or reliable information?
EDIT: Official statement by Dan Berger October 23, 2009
Howdy folks,
If you haven't heard the news, Peter Laird has sold all intellectual property rights to the TMNT franchise to Nickelodeon. So Nick now owns the TMNT lock, stock and barrel. Of note, Peter did retain the right to publish up to 18 TMNT comics per year should he choose to do so - thus Mirage Publishing will remain in business at least until May, 2010.
Check out the press release from Viacom (they own Nick and numerous other entertainment companies) here.
Check out Peter Laird's comments about the deal here.
At some point, Nick will assume control of the ninjaturtles.com domain name and Mirage will no longer be involved. Let me say it's been an honor and pleasure talking with all of you over the years and I'll miss this job more than I can say - but all good things come to an end and when doors close, doors open...
Speaking of which, I will be creating a new Mirage Studios web site for us to continue posting news and info about our comics. This site will be up and running soon and hopefully there will be a link here before any major changes take place.
I'm tempted to say "So long, and thanks for all the fish" - but we'll still be here for a bit and we'll definitely be around at the new Mirage site once it's established. So please keep checking back here to find the new Mirage Studios URL over the next few weeks - and have an awesome weekend.
Cheers!
- Dan
I think chances are high its going to go away, someone should archive it and download it all. I would but don't have a lot of HD space at the moment...

What about Mirage's Logo?

Part of me thinks that Viacom will just rework the site...maybe.

I had sent Dan an e-mail earlier in the week regarding the missing catalog on the site. I just got this response this morning:
I'm sorry for the delayed response - I was out Tuesday and Weds. with a cold (bad timing to get sick - but what can ya do?)
Anyways - we'll be starting a new web site soon where we're selling all the stuff we used to have posted.
Cheers!

I just an email from Dan too in response to my email two days ago about ordering stuff online (before I heard about the Nick stuff)
We'll be starting a new site soon where we'll be selling our comic backstorck. Hopefully it will be linked via ninjaturtles.com before Nick takes over the URL.

Truly brings a tear to my eye. I hope the people at Nick don't delete the site, there is a LOT of great information on it.

They'll redesign the UI at the very least. I'm sure the new one will be flash based, etc.

I am glad someone posted this because the thought crossed my mind today. This really feels like the end of an era because I have referred to that site so many times over the years. I am glad to hear that they will still be involved in some way. I always appreciated Dan and his efforts on the site and responding to emails. I am very glad I got the chance to tell him that in person once

Agreed. In fact, I'm guessing they'll probably just redirect it to somewhere on nick.com just like Warner Bros. did with tmnt.com.

***EDIT - Download is in progress...
***EDIT #2 - If anyone wants a copy of the site send me a PM so I can get you a link to a download of the archive...
Missourimobile has done a good job getting most of the comics and new cartoon sections preserved. I've copied much of the information into Microsoft Word documents.

Krang, I think this is the opportunity for the Technodrome.com main page to really become the go-to TMNT archive on the internet. Maybe we could work some of that Mirage archive information into the main page? If there is the room and the will, of course.
You can download websites to your HD, haven't done it in like ten years though, you have to save images locally or they become broken links and what not. I wish I could do it but can't, so I hope someone else does this. It trully is a great site and I am 100% it'll become a flash based TMNT site for kids with games and whatnot.

Sure, Shredder and I are always looking to expand the site, so we would gladly welcome any TMNT-related information or features that people are willing to provide. While we personally are only interested in the original cartoon, we would be happy to host sections about the other TMNT universes if someone volunteers to maintain them (like Bebop maintains the comics section).

This is the utility I am using to grab the site. My first run it didn't grab everything so I am working on getting the portions that HTTrack missed. Everyone who has PM'd me has gotten a link to everything I have grabbed so far and will get another link together with more information in the next few days...

Before I saw your original post, I had tried to archive the site using wget, but it missed some sections, too. I think the problem is that its robots.txt file prevents anything under the /html/ directory from being archived.

The issue with the program is that when the site was built some sections use links to directories and other links are full url links... So what you have to do is create an include rule that includes any link with ninjaturtles.com in it. Still it doesn't grab anything but running it a few times on the various sections and I am almost done archiving the site. I am not exactly sure if the archive will work properly without editing some of the links but the pictures and html files will all be there...
-mm
edit... I would highly recommend not using the setting "include ALL links" because that will start downloading the other sites ninjaturtles.com links to like playmates.com, etc... I found that out the hard way... :-P

Someone just archive the entire site and then reupload it as a new site. Let us know when it's done and you'll have the admiration of the community.
I doubt the new site will be a direct link to Nick. But I'm sure it'll be completely different.

I'm sure making backups of the site for personal reference is fine, but uploading those backups to a public place without Mirage's permission is not a good idea.

If you're referring to my earlier post, I didn't mean that ninjaturtles.com would simply go to nick.com, I just meant that I'm guessing they'll redirect to a new subsection of nick.com for TMNT stuff (for example, tmnt.nick.com or nick.com/tmnt) to make it easier for them to maintain and to get TMNT fans familiar with them at the same time.

Ive just about finished the TMNT card libary archive so I'll start archiving everything. What do people think? should I?

I'm just saying that I'm not sure if Mirage would allow that. I think it would be best to play it safe and ask Dan Berger first before uploading anything from the official site to a publicly viewable location. I don't think there would be anything wrong with zipping up the site and passing around the link privately like missourimobile was doing, though.

I think I got everything finished up. I want to double check everything again tonight and then upload the complete site tomorrow and send out the link again. I would also have to agree with Krang in that you should not upload the site to another host. That is just asking for trouble. Personal reference would be fine, I would think...

Don't forget the letters sections, they can be found here:
http://www.geocities.com/jafarnut/venusproject/letters/
This is what Dan told me in an email.
It would be a good idea for people to save the stuff they value before it disappears, because we won't be able to post most of it on our new site.
I'm sure Mirage would have no problem, its Nick that could potential have a problem.

Oh and by the way... Every time I think I am done downloading the site another section or parts of a section didn't download... I'm gonna keep at it until I make sure everything is archived. I had no idea there were storyboards and stuff on this site. It's way more massive than I originally thought. :o

Okay, total html noob here so please don't flame me, and I'm sure you guys that have more experience with html have this stuff already, but using the operator "site:" on Google yields 1450 results that have working links to old stuff like Next Mutation pics with Kevin and other golden nuggets like Splinter's words of wisdom, coloring book pages, etc.
Also, again I'm sure you guys have already thought of this, but the wayback machine engine on http://www.archive.org can give some more stuff like the Turtle letters pages going back several years!

I've been on that site since 2000, I love it, the old toy archive especially, question: should I start archiving the pages before the Viacom overhall or will all the material be moved, or perserved somehow?
Krang
11-29-2009, 10:51 PM
At this point, it is not known for sure what will happen with the site, but it is very unlikely that Viacom will move the content to their servers when they take over the domain. I would recommend saving local copies of any of the pages that you want to keep around.
