View Full Version : Will there ever be TMNT theme song that surpasses the original?

The original cartoon theme, "Heroes in a half-shell, Turtle Power!" has remained the definitive theme song of the franchise since its debut.
While the 2k3 series had several themes, none of them really caught on like the original. The first 3 movies even had a theme, which was similar to the original too.
Do you think the original TMNT theme song will forever be the most well known and well-liked?

It is a rather great song to open the show with, I must say. and yes, its my favourite too. However, I wonder what some of the younger fans think, you know, them that grew up with the 2K3 theme and what not.

Can't explain why, but theme music with words about the content of the show make me cringe in contact embarrassment.
So while I LOVE the original OT theme, I kind of prefer the score one from the end credits than the opening one.

I really do love everything about the OT theme song. But if I had to pick one version to listen to over-and-over again, I'd certainly prefer the score, since instrumentals don't wear on my nerves as much as lyrics. It's probably the same reason I can listen to the 90s X-Men theme song looping endlessly.

The animated one?
I LOVED that!
And am now sitting at my workstation singing it. Thanks a heap for the earworm.:P

The original and Red Sky Season are tied for me.

I agree completely. Altough the TMNT theme in particular doesn't count for me, as when I first heard it I couldn't understand the lyrics (I didn't speak english back then) so it was kind of an intrumental theme to me, heh. Even now, understanding what it says, I still have that feeling...
Wouldn't it be nice (or at least intriguing) that the upcoming series have a theme made by the same author as the old one? It seems that it was composed by Chuck Lorre, who is the producer of The Big Bang Theory (a fact that blew my mind when I discovered it a couple of monhts ago.)

Weird, isn't it?
After knowing this, I stumbled across the Two and a Half Men episode where CHarlie plays the TMNT theme on the piano. Obviously not a coincidence...

For me, that song will always be the best. It brings me so many good memories, and you know, the song is actually good (I guess).

I kinda dug the Next Mutation theme song. Not all of it, but the "Na-na-na-na-Ninja! Ninja Turtles!" was pretty catchy.

Chuck Lorre was the writer/co-exec producer/supervising producer of Roseanne...as well as the writer/creator/co-executive producer / supervising producer for Grace Under Fire and the writer/creator/exec producer for Dharma & Greg, Cybill, Big Bang Theory, and Two & a half men.
He's won awards for the theme songs to Two and a half men and the OT TMNT series (which he co-wrote with Dennis Challen Brown....who did the theme for Dharma & Greg)
Check out their IMDB.com profiles and see all the shows they've done songs for!

It's the second episode of the series it's called "Big Flappy Bastards".

I am part of the younger generations and I have to say I prefer the older theme it was more catchy. I kind of think all the 80-90's theme songs are much better then todays.

I doubt he'd do another TMNT theme unless the contract was sealed tighter than Fort Knox since he wasn't paid royalties for his work on the OT theme. He talked about it on one of his vanity cards (the thing that flash at the very end of his show's credits).

What's funny is that people seem to remember very little about the content of the actual show, but this sticks to everyones memory like glue.
Well that depends on what you mean, will we get an opening theme song as awesome as the 87 show? I doubt it, its not only awesome but iconic as well, people will always think of that song when it comes to the turtles and I doubt the new cartoon will have an opening theme as awesome, the 2k3 one grew on me but it was definitely a huge letdown.
But what about the TMNT having a "theme", similar to how Batman has a "theme". The original composer for the 2007 movie said he was going to give the TMNT a theme similar to how Batman had his theme but then his soundtrack was too dark and got replaced, and I thought sadly that was the end of it. However when I bought the DVD of the new movie I noticed that the new composer did make a "theme" for the turtles and its awesome, its dark and heroic and fits the turtles perfectly. Sadly I thought that was the end of that. Hopefully the new TMNT movie will also give the turtles a "theme" like the last movie did.
Now, it also seems gave another "theme" for the turtles for the Turtles Forever movie. Its the song that played in the original teaser and plays at the end of the movie right before Laird/Eastman appear. I also think that is a perfect "theme" for the turtles.

For me, I tend to love music scores over lyrics, but I loved this. It's just completely nostalgia, popculture, and era locked for me. I don't think, in my opinion, anything will surpass the original in its own flavor, but there could be things people like more for a current era flavor and such, if that makes sense.

The original series theme is definitely a classic. I think the art of cartoon theme songs (if indeed it is an art) hit an all time high in the 1980s. Between Inspector Gadget, Voltron, Transformers, The Real Ghostbusters, TMNT... even shows I didn't watch like GI Joe or Thundercats had pretty cool theme songs.
And, of course, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe had a great instrumental theme. And you have to love having a buff, tan, half-naked guy telling you his life story as orchestral disco music plays in the background.

The OT theme was an absolute classic. One of the few songs where I can hear that one note at the beginning and know what it is. Oh, and I'm probably going to catch a lot of flak for saying so, but the T-U-R-T-L-E Power song by Partners in Kryme for the first movie is awesome, too (except for that one slip-up in the lyrics where they call Raphael the leader; that was carelessness).
I agree with others, the original theme is in a league of it's own. Most people can hum it, where as if you say there has been several themes, the response usually is "Wha-?"
The Partners in Kryme song is pretty rad, too. And I like the Fast Forward theme song --despite the 'It's Ninja Time' catchphrase they laboriously tried to ingrain into us.
