I read in another thread that the first volume of the TMNT comics is going to be reprinted. How are they able to do this now that Mirage doesn't have the rights to the Turtles anymore? and where/when was this announced, i can find anything about it online and haven't read any issues of tales vol 2 yet.

I hope this isn't a rumor and does happen... If anything I wonder if Viacom will do any reprints or collected books...

There was a collected book released last year by Mirage in July. There are no other plans at present to release any collected books; Mirage no longer has the right to do so and nothing has been (yet) worked out for another company to do so. Although there are other companies who would like to do it.

So from what you are saying right now no, but there are printers that will do it, they just need an AOkay from Viacom?

That is good at least there is interest in getting reprints out there... Thanks Rose!

I wouldn't use the term printers, but there is interest in getting at least some of these reprinted. But the immediate answer is that NO, there are no current plans for this to happen.

What would be the correct term? Distributor? I want to be as correct as possible.

THANKS!

LOL... I thought of Publisher but I wasn't for sure...

Who would be some of the publisher that would do the reprints?

Nobody has permission to do anything, so let's just stop with that and not get into speculation, as people around here tend to take speculation as fact.

I think what she's saying is that there's no point speculating because it could be awhile before ANYONE works out a deal with Viacom, and it might not happen at all. So there's no point in discussing hypotheticals at this point.

in the thread talking about spawn being in the mirage continuity they were talking about reprinting the first volume, and that issue 8 would be without Cerberus.

That was a scenario from several years ago that might have happened, but never did.

I find it funny you can't even answer a simple question. My question isn't who is going to be the publisher it is what publishers COULD do the reprints... I have no idea who does what in the comic industry and if I had an idea of the different publishers I can send emails expressing interest in reprints....

Fans do that when they want something right... Or are you the official TMNT spokesperson???

I'm not speculating anything, I just want to know the names of publishers so I can contact them and let them know that there is at least 1 person that would like them to try to do reprints... Ya'll are making it into more than what was asked...

Seriously people stop being downers!

In that case, I'd say your best bet is Image since they re-printed Casey Jones and Raphael #1 and #2 under the title "Body Count" back in the day (as well as issues #3 and #4 of Body Count) as well as an entire series (be it short-lived) of TMNT comics, which may get an Official conclusion sanctioned by Viacom here in the next year or so. The last I checked Andrew said that good things were happening, not to speculate but I'd put my money on Image before anyone else, except maybe Heavy Metal Magazine.

Oroku_JJ, thank you so much for actually answering the question... See I thought Image was just a company that produced the comics and then they send the completed comic to another company to publish and distribute out to the stores... Showed my true ignorance there :-) ... I do not know a lot about how this industry works so that is why I asked...

With Andrew and the rest of the crew working on those last few issues is pretty awesome. And if it actually gets the green light from Viacom is even more amazing. I got to give all of those people props on the hard work and constant communication with the people in the industry. Just makes me believe more and more that anything is possible and that others should not throw themselves in the way to stop progress and innovation...

Know what I mean?

So what would be the point of Viacom stopping Mirage from releasing collected books, yet they'd turn around and let another company do the same thing?

Does that make any sense? I thought they simply didn't want collected books released PERIOD, not that they just didn't want Mirage to do so. Why stop Mirage then?

Probably for legal reasons. Mirage can do 18 books per year as agreed to in their contract, and maybe it has to be all new material. I'm only speculating. I do know that the Collected Tales contained new material. Mirage is also a fairly small company, always has been. If Mirage were to release more collected books with new material, they'd have partial ownership over the new material as per the contract...whereas someone like Image wouldn't. That's just my theory though.

They're not actually stopping Mirage. But Mirage would have to go through the same process of acquiring the rights to publish the books as any other company would, and paying any and all associated licensing fees required to do so. Mirage clearly has no interest in doing this (and what would be the point, when they wouldn't even give it proper distribution?).

Mirage can't just go and print whatever they want to, a right that THEY gave up when they sold the TMNT.

Nick produces or did produce a Nick Magazine before that had comics in it... Who published that? Do they publish any other comics?

So then the hope is that this other company, (Image or otherwise), gets these TPB's into bookstores, something Mirage never did?

Because that's the only way I could see Viacom granting the license to collect old stuff to any other company.

No other company is stupid enough to publish a collected book that wouldn't go into bookstores.

Dark Horse wanted to. Image wants to.

I've always felt Dark Horse would be a fitting company for the Turtles. I had heard they wanted to print a collection of old material, but not much. Would you delve a little more into the details of what happened with that? Is Viacom putting things like that old hold until closer to 2012?

Yep, Dark Horse and Image have both been inquiring about doing Ninja Turtles reprints. How far they're willing to go (i.e. what they're willing to pay) to do this is unknown. A couple things to keep in mind...

-Reprints will not appear anytime soon. While reprint tpbs would be unrelated to future TMNT projects, Nickelodeon is figuring out its entire gameplan with the property first before it will start considering books like this.

-As much as we might think of the sale of the turtles as being "everything included," it actually isn't. Peter Laird still has control of the entire Mirage collection. Any publisher would also need to get a green light from him as well. Probably not a difficult thing to work out so long as royalties acceptable to him are agreed upon.

-Just a side note on the Cerebus story. The whole business of "removing Cerebus" from the story has been dropped (as evidenced by the 2009 volume 1 trade). Quinn Johnson and I had a chat last summer with Gary Richardson about this. Peter had actually completed the remastering/editing/whateveryoucallit on that issue and it was used in an Italian trade paperback! Peter later changed his mind, however, and they got the paperwork signed with Dave Sim (who was always willing to let Cerebus remain in that story for any reprinting).

I'm all but certain that Sim's agreement with Mirage to let Cerebus appear in reprintings of #8 carries over to Nickelodeon as well. Also, it would be weird to check out that issue without him!

Both publishers would be pretty great. Image wants to do their own Volume 3, which makes a lot of sense and they have a past relationship with the turtles. There would also be no problems reprinting issues of their characters appearing (Savage Dragon, etc.). Dark Horse makes a lot of sense too, and to have Usagi Yojimbo and the turtles under the same roof would be great. You could also reprint their teamups without needing to secure any rights.

My vote definitely goes to Dark Horse. Seems like they published a whole bunch of titles I was interested in back in the day. And with a name like "Dark Horse" how can you not root for them?;)

i for one hope volume 1 is not reprinted.

there are enough back issues to be found for cheap. it's like hasbro re-releasing the same star wars figures in different packaging. how many times does one have to buy the same thing over again?

It's a form of literature. The opposition to reprinting it because copies already exist is ridiculous. There are alot of copies of War and Peace, how about we never print it again?

:lol:you're comparing War and Peace to Ninja Turtles?

a world renowned classic novel compared to niche comic book fandom?

i see your point...but get real. the reason why most books are reprinted are to keep up with consumer demand. that's why there are soooooooo many new printings of the Lord of the Rings from when the movies came out.

tmnt vol 1 is so far off that mark. ok -- i can understand the seminal first 11 issues of tmnt being reprinted a bunch of times, but i mean really...the whole run?

and who will buy these reprints? newcomers to turtles or comics? maybe some....the bread and butter are the fans -- who own all the stories anyway. the reprinting of these books is for your money, plain and simple. so why should i want to pay for stories that i already own?

I think the TMNT as a permanently available series of graphic novel trade/collections would be better than none. I mean so many other small publishers have gotten their stuff to stay out there. I mean Dave Sim for one. Jeff Smith hit it big with Bone been made available to kid schools. I'm sure there are some other examples. I think its also cyclical. Some stuff may die in the book market after a few years but can totally come back a few years later. By then the licencee may have changed too and may not tackle the property that long. I think the TMNT Mirage stuff could have that kinda effect. Like Dark Horse prints lots of stuff and their not all "best sellers" at the bookstores but at least their available or on a book shelf. As for what should be put into print that represents the TMNT at its best? Of course the Volume 1 core by Eastman & Laird. "Return to NY" should be done. I think "City at War" as well. Maybe Vol. 2's run. Maybe Vol. 4's run whenever its finished. That run would be better as a series of trades. I don't know if they should do anything else. Maybe the Tales Vol.1 run. Whoever tackles the TMNT license for books should do all the comic shorts into one big book or a seperate series of books. Cause theres alot of shorts done that haven't been collected (unless I'm wrong). I don't think Tales Vol. 2 would be wise. It was always different every issue. But something like Tristan's stories should be considered. Maybe the other Eastman & Laird solo TMNT (like #12,14,15,17,18). I loved #27's story from Vol.1. Maybe the Body Count series too. You can't do too much TMNT books of all TMNT comics, like 90% from Mirage were drawn by Jim Lawson. I don't mean to cut him down but the art wouldn't represent the TMNT as great looking comics.
All this effort can make a differance on the TMNT's comic roots getting more notoriety. So when someone mentions the TMNT they may not all think the cartoon TMNT. Hey you never know. Getting the turtles out in the bookstores is better than not having it out there and whoever takes this move for the TMNT, at least can do something that hasn't been done before and find out.
Ross May, I'm surprised to learn that Peter still has a stake from the Mirage Comics stuff you mentioned, for royalties. At least that was a smart move by him. Does Kevin get anything out of this? Or was his selling the rights totally mean that for him?

i agree it would be nifty to have a trade of City at War.

but i think the latest printing of issues 1-11 is enough to keep the interest up in TMNT. That is TMNT as far as i'm concerned....it whet's the readers appetite for more reading...but then it should be to the original comics -- not to a bunch of reprints after reprints after reprints.

i just think it's such a shame that people can't look for comics any more....it's always just in front of them in reprint format.

takes the fun out of collecting IMO. but i do see the point of being an easy option to read. to each their own, i suppose.

That's just the thing, though. TPBs are aimed at people who DON'T go looking for comics. And they're a nice bonus for those of us who like them and do have the comics. It's about expanding your audience, and you don't do yourself any favors if you force people to hunt for issues at flea markets or conventions or eBay.

or comic shops?

i can agree with your sentiments...and fair enough...but TMNT has been around for 25 years now...i think the audience has probably settled in numbers in the give and take.

surely you have to leave some allure. i think they got it right with reprinting the first 11 issues over anything else in Vol 1 any day (save for CAW and RTNY, they should be a possibility for reprinting...maybe the rick Veitch story, too). but the small print run of the latest TPB is testament to that allure. It seems turtles Vol 1 has always been about that. TMNT Vol 1 is (or at least was) an indie book. an underground phenomenon. making enough to get by to do their thing before it all got kiddified. to sell that out sucks.

but i guess inevitably times change cos money talks, and BS walks as they say...
