View Full Version : Image Discussion Thread

As I've mentioned in other places, I recently acquired most of the Image run (sorry, no point telling where they came from since it was the last issues they had in stock) and I would like a place to discuss things in the books as I go through them.
Since I'm making this thread I may just go ahead and re-read my other issues if anyone would like to start from the beginning, but probably I'll pop in with thoughts and reactions to the issues as I go.
So far I'm really impressed with the Image run. It was a shame it didn't continue longer than it did, but I noticed in #11 that Erik said Kevin and Pete were already shelling out money to keep the book going due to low sales.
The artwork improved steadily and I find myself loving the dynamic nature of the stories and the characterization Gary gave each Turtle. I read somewhere that they hadn't really read the Mirage run but he did a great job of capturing the guys' essence and made good use of dropping continuity hints like mentioning Zog when the Mike pulled out the the aircar.

One thing I found odd is in Image when Raph sees Shredder's armor for the first time, he also sees a whole bunch of other Shredder armor lined up.
I'm not sure if I like the idea of Shredder having a whole collection of different armor, it made him seem too supervillain-ish.

The point was that Shredder's armor had evolved over time as he tweeked his "evil look."

Yeah; I wished the costume had kept the hand blades, or had them integrated into the gauntlets like the 2k3 Saki figure. I really liked the serrated gauntlets though, and suppose it was more fitting since Raph is more of a slugger anyway lol!

One thing that will make me love the Image run forever and ever is its portrayl of the Mafia.
Not that it was groundbreaking or anything, but as a Mafia movie buff I really hate seeing them used in every single other TMNT universe because they always screw it up. Obviously the OT was goofy, but they actually did a good job at keeping them all Italian while the NT had several black, blonde and red-headed mobsters.
Venom
03-07-2010, 08:33 PM
Well mobsters can be multi-ethnic, but never get far up; the Mafia is Italian and only initiates those of Italian heritage, which is why Capone could never be a member of the Mafia and built his own mob. The terms are interchangeable in todays culture but from what I remember, Mafia meant the Italians and mob was a general term used for other organized crime groups not of Italian descent.
Anyway I digress.
I really dig the use of the Mafia in the Image run too. The Turtles are at their best grounded on Earth and surrounded by criminals in the city. If they get taken to space, put space crooks around them to make it work lol! The mafia was a nice transition from the Foot, too, and gave a more well-rounded feel to the criminal underworld of the Turtles universe.

The mob storyline was good because it continued from Gabrielle/Shadow's past. If it didn't, I don't think I would have cared about it as much.
Getting to know who impregnated Gabrielle in the first place was a brilliant move, especially with them being gangsters.

Actually Capone was Italian, he just wasn't a Sicilian.
And even the Sicilian Mafia has alot of non-italian associates (see Jimmy and Henry from Goodfellas) but in the NT they made it look like the whole organization was pro-affirmative action. Really not a big deal, just annoys me as a fan of that kinda stuff.

A recent phone conversation with Frank tipped me off to something funny I'll share with you guys.
Look at #18's cover for Mulder and Scully. Yes, that Mulder and Scully. He said that he'd only seen X-Files on TV once and in it, "it seemed like Mulder and Scully were talkin' to each other over their cellphones all the time." So he drew them both on the cover, standing next to each other, talking to each other on their cellphones. There's also a guy on it doing the MIB-inspired memory flash on it.
Cool things I never noticed.

Oh yeah, I forgot the Sicilian part. *headsmacks* lol! I love Mafia stuff, so intriguing that there is a whole world of shady dealings running parallel to ours.

One good thing to discuss would be how well Image fits in with Mirage continuity.
Overall it fits nicely, but I noticed a contradiction today. In #17, Leo says the last they saw of Leatherhead was when his tranmat blew up in Volume 1 #45, but there were two LH issues right after that in Tales volume 2.
I know Volume 4 sits quite well with the Image run, but can you guys think of anymore issues from Tales that step on Volume 3's toes?

Not to sidestep your questions, ToTheNines, but I read through #'s 11 and 13 today.
Seeing Sara literally jumping Mikey was pretty cool, and Mikey was feeling rather proud of himself after that lol! What is she suppose to be, though? I'm missing #10 and #12 so I'm not sure if her appearance is explained there but is she a mutant? Her head is like a praying mantis and her body is, well, not. O_o
I really enjoyed Mark Heinke's inks on #13!! Really brought the book to life, and some pages were reminiscent of Dooney's inking style with the heavy lines and bold shadowing. Doesn't mean I dislike Andrew Pepoy's inks, that's further from the truth.
The scene's with Raph mowing down Tony's men with a tommy gun was pure awesomeness!! As much as I love his sais, Raph packing firepower just feels right.
I also liked Saki's inner sanctum; it was a nice addition to an already mysterious figure that managed to add much depth to him without ever saying a word. Visualizing Saki going into his chamber, not to be disturbed, for some quiet time to think and smelting some iron to forge a new weapon or craft the newest form of his armors evolution as a form of solace was intriguing in that it bathes him in a shade of gray never been seen.
The way Gary handled Saki in Big Bang #10 and the few flittering moments we see/recall him in Volume 3 are some of the best moments in all Turtle continuity in regards to his character.

Sara/Horridus is an alien. Her mother was a human, abducted by aliens and inseminated with Sara. Her mother died while giving birth and her father kept her locked in a basement with a TV until she was a teenager (hence why she's so socially awkward and always watching TV whenever we see her).
Mikey first met her very briefly in the second TMNT/Savage Dragon crossover (Savage Dragon #22).

Yeah, that's the only real sore thumb I could find myself. Now, Leatherhead's reaction can be explained... he has a well documented terrible memory.
But there's worse contradictions to be found within the actual Mirage books themselves.
DrSpengler

Well, if one were to go for a No-Prize, you could say that TMNT #45 and the two Tales issues were part of a trilogy of a stories; a storyline with all the events taking place in rapid succession. So Leo was just grouping the entire events together when he mentioned the Transmat incident.
Of course...not bringing up the Leatherhead clones and all that would be sorta weird, but, well, you know. No-Prize and all.
Venom

Another thing that really interests me that seems to be lost to history: reading through the letters pages of those old comics, the vast majority of those who wrote in loved the book and couldn't praise Gary and Frank enough for their take on the Turtles and the way the story was developing.
I'm really glad I was able to get these issues, because back in '96 after my inital shock of seeing Don splattered on the asphalt and Raph playing Two-Face, the other three issues I were able to find locally I remember really loving a lot before the series was cancelled. I remember checking the new synopsis on Mirage's site every time a new one came out and lurking the TMNT mailing list and reading people's reactions.

The other thing is when Leo or Mike talks about alligators in the sewers being silly, (this is when the Komodo lizard was killing victims), Leo apparently has memory loss of Leatherhead. It goes something like:
Leo: But who ever heard of alligators being in the sewers?
Splinter: Oh, I seem to recall one.
Mike: That's right, Leo, what about Leatherhead?
Leo: Damn, I forgot about him!
As if Leonardo would really forget about Leatherhead.

To be fair, it's kind of like, if you're out hunting reptiles in Ghana and you see some animal footprints on the ground and someone says, "These footprints look mammalian!" And someone says, "But there's no mammals here!" And a third guy says, "Yes there is... we're humans, aren't we? Yuck-yuck."
My point is that Leo wasn't thinking in terms of the giant talking kind of alligators.
The odd part there, though, is that in Big Bang Comics #10 we do see the Turtles hunting alligators in the sewers as youngsters.

In Image, Leatherhead was still trying to fix the transmat to meet the Utroms, (as he was doing in Vol. 1 when it was destroyed), yet in Tales a sect of evil Utroms kidnaps Leatherhead and makes clones of him.
At the end of that arc in Tales, Leatherhead realizes his home is on Earth and tells the "good" Utroms to take him home. So therefore Leatherhead would have no reason to be building the transmat still, because of the aftermath of what happened.
I think the Image issue HAS to take place after #45 but before the Tales sequels, or else it doesn't make sense. Leatherhead gave up wanting to live with the Utroms in Tales.
So any thoughts on this?

Simple. He forgot about his realization.
And don't worry, Leatherhead's appearance in the Image finale makes nods to this and nods to the Tales appearances.

Yeah, Leatherhead's personality and state of mental health aren't exactly a reliable thing.
I mean, just look at Volume 4. In "Adventures in Bunnysitting" (which takes place in the 6 month gap), he's in his "doctor" persona, helping the Utroms with their science projects and all that.
Fast forward a few weeks and BAM, he's living in the sewers, living off of stolen meat and mindlessly fighting Gameraph.
Leatherhead's mind is always in a state of chaos, so I'd take anything he "remembers" with a grain of salt.
Though there IS the issue of his appearances in "World's Deadliest" and "Monster Island", which I placed before Image Volume 3. I suppose they could take place afterward since (at least so far as I recall) there isn't anything really forcing them into a specific spot.
Any thoughts on that? (this is more of a Timeline question, I know, but I take the advice where I can get it)

Not to mention at Splinter's funeral, Leatherhead was in the swamp observing from afar, rather than standing there like a normal person with everyone else.
And don't worry, Leatherhead's appearance in the Image finale makes nods to this and nods to the Tales appearances.
That's good. I imagine Gary and the other guys at Image haven't been following TMNT comics since the 2000's and thus have no idea what's going on in Volume 4 or Tales.
It's good that there is someone who knows the TMNT history and can bring these guys up to speed, especially if we want Image to fit back in nicely with Mirage continuity in between Vol. 2 and 4, as well as taking the Tales issues into account.

I think those two stories would fit better after Image. While they work nicely where they are, maybe the reason Marlin was inspired to get his little "hunt" together was the fact that there was all that commotion on TV about crocs in the sewer. And the Mirage "Volume 3" era is begging for more stories.
Of course... this all depends on how the final 2-4 issues of Image play out.

I moved em to the "Mirage 'Volume 3' (cont)" era on the list. I think they work better there from a narrative stand-point, too, rather than immediately after Berger's "Leatherhead Trilogy". Otherwise, the Turtles kinda went a reaallly long time without seeing Leatherhead.

In "World's Deadliest" Mike says "I remember you now" when he sees the guy who saved them in Tales volume 1. To me, this indicates that it's been a couple of years as opposed to months as you had it before.
Also, Leatherhead gets his accelerated healing rate in "Monster Island"... I'm not sure what kind of case that makes, but it is a reference point of some sort.

Hijacking my topic again since I read #14 today. I like how Leo was such a dick toward the cyborg and seemed irrespective on the well-being of Don by exclaiming they should leave it there to die. Everyone expects Raph to be the badass to hide his emotions through anger and passion but that's simply untrue. In this issue Leo was playing the badass who really mourned his brother but felt he couldn't be bothered by any display of outward emotion since he's the leader. To show such would be a sign of weakness.
And Raph officially taking up the mantle of the Shredder and heading up the Foot Clan is more awesome than I imagined it would be. I had always wanted to see how this aspect of the story played out and so far it's better than I imagined! The part where Tony's guy knew it wasn't Saki behind the mask was cool since no one seemed to care who it was, not even Tony, all they knew was the fookin' Shredder was back!
I felt the truce between the Foot and the Mafia was a little hollow since Raph simply promised to kill Tony if he attempted to grab Shadow again, but then again there were massive casualties to both sides so it did benefit both sides.
Don being trapped in the astral plane is certainly interesting since he was always the one who had the hardest time accepting a spiritual natue and always wanted a reasonable explanation for things. And him being the demon "terrorizing" Bat-Splinter was something I didn't expect, to be honest. I didn't want to spoil it for myself with the how of Don's surviving and Splinter's cure (well, I do know Splinter's cure, but I digress).
I'll never understand why the true version of the Turtles (ie. comics) isn't more popular...

A lot of people simply don't read comics.
I am a huge Batman fan, but I don't actually read the Batman comics. I read summaries online so I can keep up with what's going on in the Batman comics, but I don't actually own them and read through them myself. I simply don't have time or money to buy 1,000+ Batman comics to see what's going on.
Even though Mirage TMNT is only like....150 comics, (its probably less than that if you ignore the non-canon issues) its still not something an average fan is going to go after.

Just read 17 tonight, and I commend Gary's writing yet again because for the first time ever I found myself disliking Leo. He was such a dickhead toward Mike regarding his writing! It was an earlier discussion. Obviously he didn't "forget" the Tales issues with Leatherhead because they hadn't been written yet. As I said, simply "no-prizing" it.
We were talking about, if Image Volume 3 were reinserted into Mirage continuity, how it would create a continuity error since Leo's last memory of Leatherhead was TMNT #45, not any of the Tales issues that took place afterward but before Volume 3.
So yeah, the best "no prize" anyone could come up with was, "Well, I guess he just forgot about those adventures..."

Perhaps the mind**** the Turtles experienced at the end of Volume 2 created a minor lapse in the recollection of memories. Leo didn't recall what exactly happened with Braunze until some time after.

Just read #18! Boy, Leo sure must have been on an adrenaline rush to be so casual about his new stump by the end of the book, then again he may have been too busy berating Casey for the reward money to pay attention lol!
Where did the MIB come from? They just descend on Don out of nowhere it seemed.

You know, it just occurred to me that Dr. X in V3 could help explain the move of the Utroms in V 4.

Finished up my Image issues tonight.
I really wonder where Gary was heading with the adverse effects the mutagen would have eventually had on the Turtles?
It is the longest running plot thread throughout the entire series that was never given proper chance to be explored.

In Leatherhead's case it was making him regress and more savage, but in the TMNT's case I guess you can say it extended their life spans?

True, but Gary explicitly mentions that the mutagen's breakdown causing LH's regression "would have terrible implications for our Turtle boys too". Plus, Don's living armor mentioned to Leo that the mutagen present in Don's body gave it sentience.
It may not have been a story that may not have been explored for several years, after all Leatherhead is older than the Turtles, but Gary made it seem as if it would have been an issue he would have touched on later on down the road.

Yeah, there were certainly hints as to where that may or may not have been going. I'm not sure it would have been a compatible plot thread with the Mirage stuff that came later, though...
A "the mutagen in our bloods is destablizing" story would be pretty cool just the same. I guess the resolution to that would just be the Turtles reaching out to the Utroms or vice versa and the Utroms restabilizing them all. I think Gary was planning a mini space quest down the line, but I'm not sure on that one.

Aw man, that sounds so awesome!
Reading through the series, it seemed to be the longest running plotline and what would have probably lead into something pretty epic both in scale and storytelling. Taking something so vital to the Turtles as the very thing that gives there being essence, a toxic byproduct created by the Utroms, is rather groundbreaking material in terms of character development.
Damn, I want Gary and Frank to do the Turtles again more and more every day.

I enjoyed Mr. Weasel and the whole cyborg Don thing is awesome. Raph as Shredder, that was cool, it was only fitting Raph would lead the foot. I could go on about this series, ya just got to read it to see it...

Mr. Weasel? I'm probably making an ass of myself, but that doesn't ring a bell... keep in mind I haven't read 2, 3, 5, 6, or 18.

My favorite gag was when Lurch turned into a female turtle, an obvious jab at Venus from the Next Mutation, which was airing at the same time the Image series was coming out.
Hilarious. Its funny how back in 1997/1998, we had an extremely cheesy live-action TV show yet the darkest comics at the same time. Talk about polarizing.

And this time make it commercially viable so it could continue!
The comics, that is.

Well every other letter was asking about Venus too.
