"The (confusing) History of the TMNT in Japan" (http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2010/03/confusing-history-of-tmnt-in-japan.html)

This is a research essay (and opinion piece) that I'd been working on for a while. Thought I'd combine my love of the TMNT and my knowledge of the Japanese language and see if I couldn't make sense of the obscenely confusing releases of the various TMNT media in Japan.

Some of this may be old hat to a few of you, but maybe you'll learn something, too.

I had fun researching the thing; reading Japanese fan sites, manga, magazine scans and watching the various dubs (though, admittedly, I could not find any clips of that pesky NHK2 dub outside of the theme song and had to go by second hand info).

And thanks to folks like Adam Winters for making so much of his extensive TMNT manga and magazine collection available online. Definately VERY helpful.

That was great to read. I've got the super mutants dvd & love the crap out of it. I wish I could get my hands on other japanese tmnt stuff. Its all so vastly different from that which I'm familiar with. I prefer it to a few of the american variations.

Dude, this is one of your most impressive entries yet! It had been a while since your last update, so I figured you were working on something big! This is the definitive Japanese TMNT write-up that had been sorely lacking!

EDIT: I know it would probably be impossible to list every TMNT publication in Japan, but I don't think I caught a reference to the 9 book series that Shogakukan put out adapting OT episodes and the Super Turtles in #9 (you used a couple of cover scans in the article).

TMNT 2 and TMNT 3 share the same paragraph since there wasn't really a whole lot to say about either that warranted two separate ones. TMNT 2 used the same cast as the theatrical dub of TMNT 1, but TMNT 3 used a hodgepodge of the TV Tokyo cast and other talent.

Hm, did I mix up? The 15 volume Dengeki series of episode adaptations has its own write up in there alongside the aforementioned image scans. :-?

Interesting... I don't know the relationship between Dengeki and Shogakukan, but there were 9 additional books featuring full color illustrations (about with story text totaling about 15 pages a piece). I have #5 and #8 and here is a pic of #2 of that series:

TMNTerminator (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/member.php?u=791) has issues #5-9.

Interesting. I didn't see anything about them in the Japanese write-ups for the various manga I looked at.

Do you have any interior scans on your flickr account you could point me toward? I have a hunch that the stories inside are reprints of the Dengeki stuff with some bonus material, but I'm not sure (one look at the art would give me a fair clue).

dam just brought to my attention a whole ton of miscellaneous "odds and ends" manga, some I didn't even know about.

Too many to list, so I added a paragraph to the end of the "Manga" section of the article, briefly describing some of them off.

The show really was quite the hit, over there.

Hey, Spengs, one thing that always puzzled me about the Yoshioka pages from the Comic Bom-Bom magazines is why Splinter put on the Samurai armor (it does look like he actually mutates) and April transformed into a cat woman. I know it would be asking too much to try to translate that whole thing but can you piece together anything about the plot from those particular panels? Were they affected by the Muta-stones as well?

I do know that in the Dengeki Super Turtles #3, Splinter breaks out that same armor again (his feet look more normal though). It really does seem to come out of nowhere.

These wacky scans from a particular TMNT manga comic were once featured on the official NinjaTurtles.com website.

In all my collecting of Japanese TMNT material, I've never come across these:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/slimer2erasmus/02.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/slimer2erasmus/04.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/slimer2erasmus/05.jpg

If I were to guess their origin, I'd assume they appeared in something like Comic Bom Bom.

Can anyone provide some info on these images?

Nope, I just saved the files from the old website. They were contributed by a fan named "Marius Vaga."

I can translate em right now, honestly. It's almost all hiragana, so I don't have to squint to read any microscopic furigana accompanying the kanji.

But just looking over them, they're... really stupid, but clearly aimmed at preschoolers. Narratively, I think Dan or whoever originally posted those cut out some panels, so those aren't the complete comic strips, anyway.

I have no clue where they came from, either. Dan (or whoever) on the official site said they got them in an e-mail and never described what magazine they were printed in. Likely a kid's book like Comic Bom Bom as Oldmanwinters suggested, but no real way to know for sure.

If its any help in searching, the cover text reads "TV Land Picture Book vol. 43" ("Terebirando ehon 43"). Title, "The Turtles' Greatest Effort!!" ("Taatoruzu ga daikatsuyaku!!")

I know the translation sounds a little wonky but "katsuyaku" means a great exertion of effort in something physical; a great expendature of energy.

Hmm... I wonder if the issue of Gen13 guest-starring the Turtles ever made it to Japan. I know a good number of the early Gen13 issues/stories were released over there, but the issue the Turtles were in was part of a special three-issue story arc (labeled issues #13A-13B, humorously enough) that featured cameos by numerous comics characters (including the usual roster of characters from Image and the creator-owned properties from Dark Horse's now-defunct Legend sub-label, and even the Archie gang and Wolverine), so they have ran into rights issues. Though, from what I understand, at Image, when a character guest-stars in another creator's book, they're usually free to reprint it without need to ask permission from the guest character's owner(s) (the whole controversies over Neil Gaiman and Dave Sim's guest-written issues of Spawn aside). I found if that unspoken rule applies to foreign reprints?

Due to an arrangement with TMNT fan extraordinaire, Mike R., I'm currently looking at a copy of the Comic Bom Bom adaptation of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3" on loan for a few days.

I can already tell it's going to be a tough scan project, but hopefully through the cooperation of Cryomancer and DrSpengler, we can make this thing readable in time.

I'll just say that the Comic Bom Bom manga adaptation is exponentially more interesting than the actual 3rd live-action movie.

Reading through the scans Adam sent me, the thing is actually... pretty damn hilarious. I'm really impressed. Whit's death actually had me laughing out loud.

And the comic is only vaguely like the movie. It hits the same necessary plot points, but everything in-between is 100% different.

Though I don't typically care for manga-style, the art and layouts are VERY dynamic and there's a tremendous energy throughout the whole volume. There's a scene near the end where all four Turtles have to jump off the roof of Norinaga's castle to catch the time sceptre and the way the action is laid out is fantastic.

Still, I've got to do Super Turtles Vol. 3 first before I can get to this. Maybe I should get on that...

Yup, that other TMNT III volume was published by Dengeki Comics, the same company that produced the 15 volume TV episode adaptations, the 3 volume Super Turtles series, and the very cool Mutant Turtles Gaiden.

Here's some pics of it I've found over the years:

I have no idea what kind of book is next to it in this pic. EDIT: Oh, it's just the B. B. Hiller novelization in Japanese.

Since the Comic Bom Bom version of TMNT III is divided into chapters, I wonder if the chapters originally appeared in the Comic Bom Bom monthly series during 1994 before being collected into a single volume. It seems like something they might do.

My guess is that the Comic Bom Bom book will diverge more sharply from the actual movie moreso than the Dengeki edition. From what I've seen of Comic Bom Bom and Dengeki TMNT comics, CBB leaned more toward the surreal, exaggerated stories and art while Dengeki was more content to simply adapt scripts in a more conservative (and less entertaining fashion).

Comparison of the two books' dimensions:

Reading some more...

MAN I can't stand Walker's speech pattern. It's in the "polite form" (using "-masu" conjugations and stressing the "desu" at the end of each sentence), which is a stereotypical way of presenting foreigners in Japanese media, as we're taught the polite form and tend to use it inappropriately or excessively when speaking Japanese.

Basically, the way Walker reads, it's like if you were reading Speedy Gonzalez in comic form; "Aye yay yay! I weesh my seester waz heeeere!"

That kind of absurdly charicatured ethnic stereotyping.

BUT it totally fits Walker's character as an "evil Gaijin"... it's just annoying to read, especially the use of katakana for words over kanji or hiragana (again, another trait of stereotyping foreigners in speech to show how, um, foreign they are).

Spengs, in some of our previous emails, I think you confused Walker (the villainous Englishman who tries to sell guns to the Japanese Warlord) with Whit (Walker's sometimes lackey and the apparent ancestor of Casey Jones). I just wanted to make sure we're thinking of the same character. I can't blame you if you haven't watched the film in a while though. :-P

Whoop!

Yeah, Walker is what I meant.

And yeah, I haven't watched the movie since I bought it on DVD, like, 7 years ago.

With good reason.

In regards to Whit, though, you're right; his character arc in the Bom Bom manga is completely different from the movie's (and a lot funnier, too).

I have no idea what kind of book is next to it in this pic. EDIT: Oh, it's just B.

Can't wait to see them, man! (Assuming you're gonna share that is!)

Believe it or not, today I received up some Japanese books of my own!

The format of these books make them a little difficult to scan in their entirety, but I will be sharing some neat little bits in the near future!

Oh, and I also picked up both manga adaptations of the 3rd movie (which means DrSpengler and Cryomancer will have some more email from me)!

EDIT:
Uploaded the first bit here:

What numbers are on your books? I couldn't figure out if the #45 on mine was a reference to the number in a series or a description of the number of pages (which was actually 45).

TheCanadiandrome

my books are the exact same as the ones u put a picture up of, so got #45 on mine as well. my Manga dude/friend didn't really say if it's part of a series or a description of the number of pages, so maybe he didn't know for sure.

i'm not at liberty to say how much i've paid for my TMNT Manga collection as i feel it's nobody's business, sorry :tcool:

as for where i got them, i originally posted a "Want It Now" advertisement to Ebay in 2010, and a fellow Ebayer from Japan responded and he's been helping me aquire everything i have since then! and i love everything i have! i'm only two Shogakukan Pic Books away from having what i believe to be all TMNT related Manga :tgrin:

I guess I'm not looking for a total figure, I'm more talking how much can I realistically expect to shell out on average for a single issue in decent shape. While I understand not wanting to say what you spent I'm just asking for an olive branch from a fellow Dromer because I don't want to pay 500% of the value of something because I'm going in blind.

The average issue of Dengeki Comics (the 15-volume set that adapts TV episodes from the Fred Wolf cartoon), probably sells for anywhere from $7-20 USD. In contrast, Dengeki's "Mutant Turtles Gaiden" volume and the 3-volume "Super Turtles" issues generally sell for between $20-30 (or higher) USD. That's just been my observation from the times they've shown up on ebay, or the times when I've done the price conversions from Japanese Yen on Amazon Japan listings. Outside of those specific issues I mentioned, I don't have good estimates on value.

Acquiring them stateside comes down to being lucky enough to finding the right item at the right time from a seller (often Japanese) who is willing to ship it internationally.

It's really hard to say anything involving these manga books are overpriced since they are hard to come by for us stateside citizens.

That said, I think they're overpriced! (Especially when you factor in the $35 shipping charge).

But everybody has a right to make a buck and somebody probably is willing to pay that much for them.

Value really is in the eye of the beholder. I just get my price range from the averages of what I've seen on Amazon Japan. But prices do vary over time. I take the philosophy of "the more you buy, the less the seller ought to charge you per book."

Very interesting history, I always wanted to know more, especially about the super mutations/armors. I'd love to be able to read those issues or at least have extended summaries of them. As a huge fan of Power Rangers and Saint Seiya as a kid having the TMNT my other love as a kid seeing influences from those on TMNT is great. In fact I often played PRs an Saint Seiya plots with my TMNT figures. I also think anime April looks too Kawai.

ShoPro Books has been releasing the IDW series in Japan. (http://books.shopro.co.jp/?tags=turtles)

Interestingly, the "Mutant Turtles Vol. 1" trade not only includes IDW TMNT issues #1-4, but also Mirage TMNT Vol. 1 issue #1. Also, the trade with the first four IDW micro-series is called "Mutant Turtles: Omnibus". And there's a Japanese version of the Ult. Visual History book.

Always nice to learn a new wrinkle to the TMNT international market. I wonder what original new TMNT comics might be produced in Japan.
