View Full Version : Turtles Forever - Great Episode or Greatest Episode?
TMNT88

This poll has probably been done before but I thought I'd throw it out there since Turtles Forever just aired in it's entirety on 4Kids and is one again fresh in everyone's mind/TiVo/DVR. What is the Turtles Forever to you?
p.s: please discuss the poll in this thread. Post discussions/arguments on the episode itself is over HERE (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=29075). Just to make things easier for the mods so they don't have to merge. kthx.

I'm kinda confused by the difference between the first and second options... but I picked the second one.
I'm kinda confused by the difference between the first and second options
The second claims that it was the ultimate Ninja Turtles ep whereas the first just doesn't talk spit about it. I chose the first option because, with my usual objective view, I can see newcomers feeling very excluded while watching this. Take away the self-referential trivia, and the movie would be 1/3 shorter. That's still pretty good though. That's why it wasn't as unappealing as other fan-targeted movies. It can stand on its own four feet. But, still, if they gave it enough thought, they could have wedged the self-reference in there without confusing the heck out of newbies.

Fixed.

I voted the first. It was great but they coulda done better. I wish the 80s tmnt wernt so damn retarded and the Mirage Tmnt were in it a bit more. But with that said I enjoyed it very much as it was.

This movie was for long-time fans, of course a casual viewer would have no idea what the hell is going on.
You also have to remember, this was also the series finale for TMNT 2k3. They finally wrapped up Ch'rell for good, so as much as it was a celebration of the franchise, it was also intended to close out the 2k3 series.
If you hadn't been watching the show all along, you'd wonder why Ch'rell was on an asteroid, who Karai was, and stuff like that.

Yes it was a great wrap up for the series & I might add kinda sad too. It's the end of an era even though the TMNT will continue in whatever new direction since now they're owned by a corporation & not the creators. :tcry:

It's not an episode its a movie. I liked it a lot, however the more i watched it the more I think it could have been improved. I did not like the animation that was carried over from Fast Forward and BTTS. I wish they had the same team that did the original 2K3 series produce this. The animation, art, fighting scenes were the best i've ever seen in any animation show.
I didn't like how the 2K3 turtles were much taller than everyone else. They made them bigger ever since Fast Forward started.

'Twas the same team. And by animation, I'm pretty sure you mean art design... because this is the best we've ever seen TMNT animated.

As a long-time fan definitely a child-hood high-five, a nice close-out to both eras, 1987 and 2k3., at least in my mind it belongs to both eras...regardless, don't know about overall best in terms of their cartoon universe, but still made for a memorable 25th anniversary.

I was thinking the same thing. I wanted to see the true 2K3 revival style turtles and not the Fast Forward sharp edged art style. It just looks too much like Teen Titans or something to me and not as good as the original 2K3 style with the darker shadowing and grittier feel.
I didn't like how the 2K3 turtles were much taller than everyone else. They made them bigger ever since Fast Forward started.
Exactly. The '88 turtles looked like midgets standing next to the new turtles. I suppose that was on purpose but I didn't like it. I mean the '88 turtles are shorter than '88 April, but the 2K3 turtles are taller than April? Just looks funny to me. Reminds me of when you stood your regular TMNT action figures next to one of those 12" giant figures. :tlol:

It wasn't the same team. Also i didn't mean the writing staff, I didn't have a problem with that. The story was great. I meant the art design, it was not the best! If you consider Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers style better than the regular series something is wrong with you.
Also the action sequences in the regular series was amazing, the animation was produced by a Korean company I believe. The 2K3 turtles in Turtles forever were too tall, too square. Too Teen Titans.

Jesus...
For starters, Dong Woo did the animation for every single episode.
Second, the animators have nothing to do with the way the characters are drawn... that was all on 4kids.
Third, just because they were drawn differently doesn't mean they were drawn by different people. They just wanted to change art direction, and at no point did I say the newer style is the best. So brush up on your reading comprehension before you tell me there's something wrong with me.

Well there had to be some creative changes other than the drawing style. I mean the fight scenes and action scenes were horrible in BTTS, even in FF. I know the writing staff changed after the 2K3 series. How do you go from dark edgy fighting to Raph turning into a frog?

They were just trying to save money, it was still the same creative team (mostly).
And Marty Isenburg, Steve Murphy and Chris Yost all wrote some FF episodes, on top of people I forgot, so the writing staff did not change.

Yeah, Fast Forward was ok for me. But BTTS, i dont what the hell happened. But is anyone here noticed other than me the fighting scenes were just aweful?

Yeah, Fast Forward was ok for me. But BTTS, i dont what the hell happened. But is anyone here noticed other than me the fighting scenes were just aweful? My guess would be that the budget took a hit. The animation in Fast Foward is on par with the first four (the fifth season wasn't animated as well) seasons of the show. By BTTS the animation was noticably less smooth, however.

That would surely explain why Turtles Forever was always copyright Viacom.

I thought it was great, not the greatest, but I really enjoyed it. Two thumbs up.
But I just want to know why the helk did the animation change? The new animation in BTTS and FF is horrible compared to the first few years. And if it was because the budget was cut. Why was it cut? TMNT was one 4kids most watched shows.
And if it was because the budget was cut. Why was it cut?
Slipping ratings. Fickle suits. A-hole censors. Pick your poison.

Wait, what? That doesn't make any sense. Turtles Forever was not at all a product of Viacom and I am completely confused why you would infer that it was.

I thought that it was an all 4Kids effort and they just upped the budget. I thought gobo was saying that Viacom also had a hand, which, if true, would have been news to me, but also would have made sense.

But it doesn't make any sense. The project was started and completed long before Viacom was part of the picture. Even assuming 4Kids knew that the Viacom sale was a possibility, that didn't give them any extra money to work with, as the sale didn't actually happen until after the project was in the can.

Cuz the credits said so? "© Viacom 2009". You don't remember that?

Rarely has Don ever not been exact.

I don't remember the exact quote, but I do know that Don is capable of joking/exaggerating for humorific effect.
But back on topic. While I did love it, it could've been better. I know the voices have been harped on alot, but imagine how aweomse it would have been to have the whole cast back...
Then, the biggest bone-head move (for me) was having random unknown mutants in the OT world when they could've have a bunch of random classic baddies. Hell, I woulda been happy with "Ray" or Tempestra or some mad scientist.

That's what I don't get either. It would have been so easy to show like Metalhead, Tragg, Stockman, Leatherhead, and Rat King all up to something. Then we'd get the fun of wondering what the heck they were doing working together.:tlol:
If they had used a known character, people then would have been complaining that they were defeated too easily. But, personally, I was halfway surprised that they didn't use Baxter for that scene for another one of those wonderful "What the shell?" interjections.
Everything TMNT is going to say Viacom now. That's how it works.
Alright. So, I'll go with my backup theory of 4kids putting all their eggs in the Forever basket and letting BttS cruise along on empty. Good?

Hands down the biggest gift to hardcore turtles fans. I've never seen another franchise do something like this before except maybe Star Trek but that wasn't even a crossover this big. They also basically made everything canon in one way or another. It was a genius idea and well executed.
No original voice actors is a let down but it's understandable why. I still loved it for what it was. If you're a fan of turtles it pretty much has something for everyone. It's rare something comes out that pleases a whole franchise worth the fans. It also had some very rewarding "in" jokes. Some obvious care went into it's creation.

I just watched Turtles Forever again (I "acquired" it from a friend) and I gotta agree. This is probably the biggest "fan service" project I've ever seen from a franchise. They resurrected a cartoon that hadn't been on TV for over a decade, whose fans are mostly adults, and crossed it over not only with the new cartoon (produced by a totally different company!) but even with the original comics.
This was a great gift, and that's exactly what I think it was. Now that Viacom owns the TMNT there will probably never again be any consideration made for what the "fans" want, and they'll go in their own direction with the Turtles. It's nice to see "our" Turtles one last time. As corny as this sounds, it's almost like we get the chance to say goodbye.
