View Full Version : A Disturbing Trend

Lately I've been noticing a trend in cartoons. They suck anymore. I am really getting scared that one day I'll wake up and all my favorite shows from my childhood will have been remade into half hour blocks of crap-o-ramas and Turdfests.
I really find it appalling that people are aloud to destroy classic shows. I urge everyone to write to their Congressmen and demand these people be beaten senseless in public for their crimes.
I mean, Extreme Ghostbusters? The only extreme thing about it was how stupid it was. Transformers Armada is poke'mon with robots. The New Dexter's Lab art is hideous. HIDEOUS!
To date, the new Turtle show is the only one that is good. Everything else is a disgrace.
I never remember a story line being in ANY of these old cartoons. But some butt face woke up one morning and decided he had to be a moron and ruin everything for everyone. Seriously, who actually thinks Armada isn't a disgrace to Transformers? I don't even consider Armada to exist.
And it's because kids these days like to watch this crap that is spoon fed to them. It's Americanime. It's the wholesome morals of Tipper Gore mixed with a far fetched story, when everyone knows the only way a good story can be worked into a cartoon is if their is death or some large consequence that gives way for some emotion. What's the worst that happened in Armada? One of the kids is fat. Ghostbusters Extreme? A kid was crippled. It's terrible.
Am I alone here? No body else just wants story lines that take 3 minutes to build and then have some robots Kung Fu fight each other? That is a cartoon, kids. If you think that cartoons in America are supposed to be sophisticated and that you should go and try to find deep meanings in the story lines in them, you're an idiot. Anime is the only thing that can pull that off. America doesn't have the balls to do it. I really hate what TV has become. Just a politically correct extravaganza. This is one of the seven signs people.......duck and cover.
What do u think of the New He-Man cartoon?

It is stupid that they remake shows instead of showing the originals.

What do u think of the New He-Man cartoon?
Incredible! I always loved He-Man, and this show pays homage to the original series. I don;t like Skeletor's voice, but it's easily over looked. Plus He-man and Prince Adam finally look a smidge more different than they did back in the day.

when i began reading this i was concerned you were gonna put down the new tmnt or the batman animated series or even justice league. but as for youexample i completely agree.
Armada is absolutely painful. it could be okay but those damned humans(stupid homo-sapiens)
i'm not a big ghostbusters fan, but when i saw extreme ghostbusters i was appaled
and i do hate that they redid dexter. which bothers me because the creator of dexter is an absolute geious(we can see that in samurai jack)
Okay u were saying that the New TMNT was the only show that didn't suck so i had to see were you stood on He-Man.

Another thing that amazed me! How no one ever picks up on the formula for a good cartoon. Batman Beyond was a unbelievable cartoon. I almost pooped myself when I saw it. And "Return of the Joker"? *drool*, sweet mercy of Christ it was so cool I walked across the street and punched my neighbor in the head.

I'm not really against remakes, granted there's been some HORRIBLE ones like extreme ghost busters, the next mutation (EGB/TNM fans dont get all deffensive now this is just my opinion  ) but look at the new he-man and tmnt...they're not bad, in fact im glad they're back in some way.

Yes, they have no deep meaning or what not. American cartoons are developed upon the hopes of selling toys and merchandise. American children are ignorant and arrogant and can't handle a deep running story. If you ask a kid about one of the Japanese cartoons out there with a real on going story "Why are these two characters fighting?", you'll get "Because one's bad and the others good."
Cartoons are great. But lets not forget what they are about. An escape from reality. A cheap high. An ink fix. etc..

Therefore i saw myself forced to start watching "jap crap" which actually kicks the ass of most americrap on tv now.

Man... I can never understand why so many people hate anime outright. Is it because they judge the entire medium based on Pokemon, Digimon, etc?
C'mon: Go watch End of Eva, Cowboy Bebop:Knockin' on Heaven's Door, or Spirited Away. Then come back and tell me if it's still "crap".
Nickokapo
03-28-2003, 02:41 PM
I agree chibikasai, most people judge anime for what they see in tv, which is not only not the best anime out there, it is most of the time quite ruined.
Go watch the cowboy bebop movie, go watch akira, go watch ghost in the shell, go watch all the evangelion stuff, go watch real anime, uncensored, the way it was meant to be, and if you comeback and still say anime is crap, you deserve your head be taken out of your ass for a minute, so that i can kick it then put your head back in.
And cqb..I DEFINITELY encourage you to go see the cowboy bebop movie when it is out, i saw the subbed version and it blew my mind...be warned tho its like 2 hours long but its worth it, good stuff :P
And DBZ is already quite tiresome, but give it a rest, its like 20 years old already...and of course the uncensored version doesnt compare to the cn one, as tiresome as the original one might get at one point too, the original is a great improvement over the cn version.

Anime is really good. The old stuff though. The 80's to early 90's stuff. The things they bring over here now are stupid ass crap that should be burned. I liked Poke' mon, but they stopped forcing animals to fight each other and I got so pissed when they decided to help people instead.

I like the big eyes better than the fugly cartoon ones, i think they're better looking, but if you must know, most characters in cowboy bebop have relatively normal sized eyes and are pretty much anatomically correct.I guess you fell asleep a little too soon to pay attention to that.
Truth hurts.
If you found an elaborate plot boring then that's not my problem, maybe you should actually stick to cartoons, see how a robot smashes another robot for 20 minutes untill you wanna buy their toys, simple fun eh?Fits you well.
Maybe when you grew up you might start looking for series with better plot, if you are still interested in animation, that is.
If not you can stick to your cartoons or whatever, but i wont, america used to make good cartoons, but now they rarely do, i think they're going in the right direction with the new tmnt, new he-man and some batman ones, even tho i never really got interested in batman ive heard many people liked it, but for now its pretty much doomed.
Maybe america wasnt prepared for anime, they bring mostly crap and then water down the plot to the point it gets stupid in some cases.
Not to mention most american people seem to pay attention to how the characters look rather than the series itself, particularly the eyes...yeah, they draw em big, get over it.

Is it because they judge the entire medium based on Pokemon, Digimon, etc?Look at my last quote: anime in ANY form, whether it's the "artistic" stuff like Akira or Cowboy Bebop (which is a stupid name in itself), or the "Americanime" like Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh...ANY form, you will never catch me dead watching.

Well that's one hater less, go stick to cartoons, next..
:P
You guys even changed the argument from not liking anime because of their eyes, and now it's the title?
Well "cowboys" are the nicknames of the bounty hunters, and bebop the name of the ship the main characters own, but i'm sure you knew that.
And yeah, they figured they'd merge both for the title, but yeah so japanese arent good in english, at least they try, unlike america that has to change the names of most characters in the anime aired on tv because they'd think a name like hanagata or whatever would be too weird for ya.

Yea, those pics have wierd eyes still, not OUTRAGOUSLY big eyes, but wierd nonetheless..... It isn't my loss if I hate anime, to me that's my gain.....Animation was created as a comical form of art, and now the Japanese are using it as some sort of copy to some shows we here would see non-animated...
Here are a few more reasons to hate crapimation, also known as anime.. :P
Anime is lazy animation, very limited style...The animation is limited to the absolute minimum required, and they use many tricks to make it seem as though the scene is more animated than it really is. Don’t believe me? OK, here’s a test. Grab your favorite anime TV series, since I’m speaking primarily about the majority of anime, which are TV series. OAVs and movies are higher budget productions and therefore are better animated and the “lazy animation” style isn’t as noticeable. Pop your favorite anime TV series into the player. It’s better with a DVD, because you’re going to want to turn the audio track on Japanese and any subtitles to off. Why do this you ask? First off, if you watch it in English, your brain will be translating words into thoughts and you want to be concentrating on the animation, not the story or dialogue. If you know a fair amount of Japanese, perhaps you may want to place the audio on mute, but you won’t get much entertainment value out of watching the anime now. Secondly, no subtitles because your eyes will be distracted from watching the translation at the bottom of the screen, and that’s no good either. Focus and concentrate on the image in front of you. So what did we learn? Depending on the year and budget of the animation you watched, you might have noticed a few things. The Japanese aren’t animating a whole lot. And the frame rates aren’t a constant 30 per second either.
Here are the facts: (1) Japanimation runs at an average of 24 frames per second, with main objects animated at 8 to 12 fps and background objects as low as 6 to 8 fps. (2) Japanimation often hide or use tricks to conceal that fact that nothing in the frame is being animated. Such as: the speaking character’s back is turned to eliminate the need to animate mouth movements, or a sequence such as someone running is simply looped animation, or a sideways moving shot or a shot zooming in on a character is not animated, but rather the camera moving over a single cel. (3) Japanimation makes no or little attempt to align the mouth movements to the actual dialogue. (4) Most anime cels are drawn in Korea.
One could say Japanimation is well drawn and poorly animated while American animation is poorly drawn and well animated.
cqb101
03-29-2003, 12:52 PM
Maybe you are right but atleast Anime is much more detailed and has a better story line than your regular american cartoon.
And do you know why the frame rait is slower? Because they concentrate much more on details which IMO is worth it.
ChibiKasai
03-29-2003, 12:57 PM
Low frame rates, looping, recycled footage, Korean animators....
Oh, yeah, American companies *never* do that...
::laughs as she remembers the ending to a certain episode of Clerks...::
Tokka-B
03-29-2003, 01:23 PM
Heh, actually they don't because they spend money on their cartoons and make everything move, unlike the Japanese who just create a partial storyline and hand it over to the poor Koreans who have to do all the work with limited money and that crap....
Hmmm, better storyline? HA! Maybe after like 30 episodes of DBZ they MIGHT land a punch on the enemy and win the battle, LOL! But hey, its your storyline....... At least even in the corny American cartoons they get their job done within the same episode and then continue the journey through a series, now that is storyline...and not cheap animation either...
Nickokapo
03-29-2003, 01:27 PM
So?Americans have been using "tricks" as you put it to avoid mouth animation too, amongst other things...shredder by example, in the old toon he has a mask that covers his mouth, that way he could talk and his mouth wouldnt be seen, saving them the trouble of having to animate his mouth movement for around a whoopin' 193 episodes.
They also use repeated backgrounds for when a character is using a vehicle.
DBZ was aimed at kids and isnt the kind of anime with better plot that im referring to, its also kinda old, but you dont seem to give it a rest
So animation might've been created for comedic purposes, but things change, this aint the 30s anymore, are you telling me you hate serious cartoons as batman too because they are not a comedy?Oh and for your info, there is a lot of comedy anime.
I should also mention most new "american" cartoons are made in korea, mainly the new tmnt show, which is ironically one of the only new toons that doesnt suck.
Tokka-B
03-29-2003, 01:32 PM
Heh, shows why most of the new shows suck, they are all made by pokemon and digimon animators....
You really think the point of shredder's mask is to save them money from actually annotating his speaking??!! HA! I can name many episodes of tmnt that he doesn't have his mask on and they animate his mouth, it is part of his costume, his character....you dont see the back of him while he talks like you do in anime, it just isn't right and american animators know this...
I wasn't talking about only 30's cartoons, it still is a part of animation today, like it should be, anime of course has changed that...
Nickokapo
03-29-2003, 01:46 PM
 Just goes to show japan is not the only country that uses korean animation.
And of course japanese have changed that, american seemed to have no intent to make serious cartoons anyways up untill spawn or heavy metal came out, they believe cartoons are for kids, but they can have it their way.
Also japanese animators are quite versatile, they can animate cartoons (by example toei who did tmnt season 1 [some people might even tell you its the best season in the whole toon] and transformers the movie and it still looks like a frickin' cartoon...and a well animated cartoon at that) while americans try to do anime their way and all they end up with are "totally spies" which is crap.

No actually american anime (sad enough that I can even say that) is nothing more than japanese anime with the crappiest english dub they could do...dubs never work, and will never work.....you can't capture the sense of the cartoon when changing languages and voices and other stuff...
Japanimation is too emotional, you see women break down to tears (oops did I say tears? I meant non-flowing water  ) in every series and it disgusts me. Japanimation isn't funny (with an exception of maybe ping pong club, although it got really supid and is even being compared to south park now, so I stopped watching it), and there is little, if any action...The storylines might be made well, but the way they make it into a cartoon completely shoots it down, I can see japanese writers make books and get paid more than to make it for people who are going to destroy the work of composition with big eyes, horrible frame rate, sloppy art....it really is a shame. But hey, there are always those people willing to buy and see anything, thus ebay was born, lol

I wasnt talking about dubbed anime, i was talking about americans trying to copy the anime style and failing miserably at it ( http://www.totallyspies.com/ ) while japanese could adapt their style to do some kickass cartoons, by example toei, but dubbed anime is quite horrible as well as its original plot gets butchered down and most american voice actors screw it up even more.
And there might be a lot of dramatic anime, but there's also comedies...and saying there's no action's just stupid, you should see the cowboy bebop movie  oh i forgot the plot is too complex for you and will make you fall asleep.

....you're a lost cause, Tokka.
Your arguments aren't even making much sense anymore. Seems *anything* with plot is "bland and boring" to you.
I'm curious- If all the anime shows we've put forward are "crap", what kind of "highbrow, entertaining" shows do you watch?
Seriously, humor me.

I would like to note that the new TMNT show is done by a Korean company, which does employ the same techniques used in anime in their cartoons.
Beleve me, all animators use diffrent frame rates for diffrent objects in seperate layers. it is part of the process!
You can't simply hate all anime as a whole catagory unless you have taken the time to watch every fuggin anime show out there!!
Of course there is bad anime and there is good anime too, you shouldn't generalize like that it isn't healthy

People generalize American cartoons also, it seems it's all either Disney or Warner Brothers.

Which is why the new tmnt sucks....I stopped watching it after episode 1 where they had that anime fighting thing, that was dumb as hell...I learned that you can't remake classics like they used to be...
I have seen most categories of anime, mostly the ones that got good reviews, apparently these reviews aren't too accurate....

Tokka you really don't get it do you? To back your argument you keep using DBZ as an example even though we all said DBZ sucks and isn't good anime. Shows how well you can read.
Anime has no action? If you think anime has no action you haven't seen very much anime. If you haven't seen very much anime then you can't judge it and say it's crap.
You still think anime people are drawn with big eyes? Prove it because so far you haven't. In fact so far you don't have anything to back up the fact that anime is crap.
Apparently your brain isn't big enough to understand the fact that anime has deep in depth story lines with action and comedy.
Tokka, as ChibiKasai said your arguments don't make any sense anymore so do the smart thing and shut up before you make an even bigger ass of yourself.

Why is it that people who bash anime refur to the animation and don't talk about the great stories and characters? I mean, their's some eppisodes of Cowboy Bebop that have moved me to tears, (like when Faye finds her old home, that blind girl's brother died, and of course what happened to Spike at the end) Mobile Suit Gundam was great too, people make fun of the animation, it was the 70's people! The entire show is basically about the horrors of war. Another is the Big O, with a very complex story, very dark mood (alot like Blade Runner meets Batman, with giant robots) and a big mystery that makes you watch each time just to try to get more clues to find the answere.
I guess one of the reasons I didn't automatically dislike anime like some people was that I was used to it, I watched shows like Speed Racer, G-Force, and Voltron as a kid.
PS-I really like Japanese animation style because it's really dynamic and great eye candy.

   You back up facts with proof, not opinions....
And if anime is so good, why does America get the crappy anime and not the "good" anime???
Didn't I just say that anime had deep storylines??? Yes, I did, but I said that they animate it awful, REALLY AWFUL, with bad drawings too....if I were the creator of the story, I'd keep it to a book and not hand it over to some cheapass who will try and draw big eyes for my story and make it look like a joke....sheesh...
Anime is so lame, ooooh that guy has super hyper demon punch!!! wow, so impressive I bet he can knock him out with a dragon kick!!! maybe slam will kill him, I don't know...  Or if worse comes to worse we can always shout out a bunch of stupid lines to power up our attack and "special"....LOL, if anything anime is more fun to make fun of, hehe...

There you go again, using DragonBall as your sole example.
Once again using Cowboy Bebop as an example of *steller* anime: It doesn't have any hokey power-up attacks. It's a great mix of film noir, bounty hunting, and futuristic starships. Full of shootouts, with a little Bruce Lee style martial arts and sword play thrown in every once in a while.
Not to mention highspeed chases.
NO "Power-up for 30 episodes, then turn your hair blonde and blast your enemy to next week." NONE.
And for the record- We *do* get good anime on TV. We had Cowboy Bebop on Cartoon Network. We also have lots of the Gundam series, .hack//SIGN, and Inu-yasha. We're getting Trigun and Ruroni Kenshin. Heck, CN even showed Evangelion for about 2 days, even though it was horribly butchered. Theaters are showing Spirited Away right now, after it just won an Oscar for *Best Animated Feature*.
So get your facts straight, would you?

LoL, and who was Spirited Away up against....Treasure planet?! Lilo and Stitch? No wonder....
Yea, CN shows those toons, but they are horribly dubbed, so it really doesn't matter, they all suck.....The Japanese should stick to storytelling, not anime, LOL
oooooh, bounty hunting, that gets me siked...can't wait to see a few more episodes of Bebop guys...sheesh If I wanted real action, I'd watch G I Joe or X-Men or something else worth my time, I don't waste time looking at big eyes and sweat drops dangling and people shouting out wierd **** and little girls voicing my super heroes, that is for the anime obsessors sheesh....

You obviously don't know what you're talking about, Tokka. Try watching any anime other than DBZ (which is most likely the only anime you've seen based on your posts) before making yourself look any more like an imbecile. If you did any kind of research before posting your nonsense, you would know that most anime is based on manga (Japanese comics) and the animation companies base the character designs on that, including the "big eyes" that you hate so much. You're so far off on your "facts" that it's not worth my time arguing with you. BTW, it's not necessary to use the laughing icon 50 times per post, that's very irritating.

LOL, and who ever came up with the word manga?!? LOL, sounds like a fruit instead of a comic...
Taken from http://www.shogakukan.co.jp/main/eng/fwjm/index.html
Pronounced "mahngah," the word was coined by the legendary woodblock print artist Hokusai in 1814. In trying to describe the whimsical character of his sketches, he combined the Chinese ideograms "man" ("involuntary," or "in spite of oneself") with "ga" ("picture"). The first character also conveys the meaning of "morally corrupt." However, it was not until the beginning of this century that the term "manga" came into popular usage.
In other words: IT'S NOT ENGLISH. :sweatdro:

Krang, I have seen enough anime not to like it, the drawing style is just so wierd, it is kinda hard to explain, not just the big eyes, stalling teardrops, and unnessessarily wide range of colors they use for hair.....but as a whole, including backgrounds and such...I have seen most anime, and that is a lot, the cartoons are just too slow to me, they really do a poor job of getting the story across too...
Argh, I hate when people compare the amount of sales to how good it is...I good example would be Lilo and Stitch not winning the oscar, they easily had the best income percentage out of the bunch but was pretty bad nonetheless......the same thing I can apply to anime/manga...sure a lot of people may buy it, but that hardly makes it good at all...You say it got good sales in Japan, well sorry they don't do Japanese dubs of our cartoons because it wouldn't make sense to them, so therefore they have only one thing to watch along with there normal programming: Anime
Anyway, I'd hardly consider that sarcasm, I think the word you were looking for was exaggeration.

And i agree sarcasm doesnt trasmit well thru the net :p
So we show him "normal" anime eyes and he still thinks they're weird  i dunno what his definition of weird might be but in my book those eyes seem pretty normal, american also draw different eyes sometimes, look at 1930's mickey:
http://www.os2forum.or.at/TeamOS2/Special/Animations/Mickey/mick1.gif
His eyes look like 2 black pacmans :p but times changed and so did artists and so did eyes, and same thing happend with anime eyes, not everyone draws them with big eyes anymore, but you won't accept that, you're biased.
And noone titles a comic manga in japan, its just how its referred to, because HELLO, EVERYONE SPEAKS IN JAPANESE IN JAPAN AND THERE'S A LOT OF JAPANESE PEOPLE, MAYBE THATS WHY ITS CALLED JAPAN SINCE ITS A COUNTRY THAT HAS ITS OWN LANGUAGE!OMG!
And i can assure you they get lots of sales, manga is pretty popular in japan and there's manga about anything, from basketball to kiddy stuff to whatever you could imagine.
What is Manga?
Manga are akin to comic books. They are published by manga companies just like the United States' comics are published by giants such as Marvel and DC, but with a few differences. For one, the number of Japanese publishers far outweigh the number of American ones. For another, the content of manga ranges over a much wider variety of interests than American comics -- anything from cooking, sports, etiquette to the usual super hero stuff. Manga also caters to the tastes of small children to that of full grown adults, while American comics tend to be thought of as something only for kids and teenagers. Manga in Japan is part of all stages of life.

He's right. An overwhelming majority of animation is done in Korea. BUT the styles of the two types are different. Like I said, Anime tries to tell a story where as American cartoons try to sell toys. Both are great, though they've recently fallen from their original grace.

I guess he just wanted to provoke, otherwise no sane person would have posted the same stuff over and over again.
But I have to agree with Tokka in one aspect. I think he said before that the American dubbings of Animes are very bad. As far as Rorouni Kenshin is concerned this is totally true. A few days ago I watched a dubbed version of episode 6 and I really hated it. Even worse than the dubbing is the censorship. I can't understand why they have to show an anime as violent as this one at a time when kids can watch it. The censoring is just ridiculous...

Just adding my two cents--I apologize for joining late in the thread. Well, I used to be a big anime fan, and I still watch some from time to time. I got into it before the big Americanime boom. Now, like many have stated, Americanized anime is for the most part crap. Not all, but most it seems. My opinion on it is similar to my opinion on pop music. 95% crap, once in a while you get something halfway decent. One of the strongest points of anime is that it lends itself to more genres than American cartoons--not because of the style, or saying that American cartoons can't, but that often American cartoons don't span all genres. In Japan, cartoons are appreciated by people of all ages, and it is much more of an acceptable art form. The same goes for comic books (manga) too. It's not just "kid's stuff" over there. In fact, there is a staggering amount of adult-oriented anime as well. Basically, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, DBZ, etc. are for the kids, and maybe they'll appreciate stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Akira, Record of Lodoss War, etc. when they get older. Anyway, just as a point of interest, as the question was raised and never answered. The reason, I've been led to believe, why Batman Beyond was cancelled, was that most of the creative team went to work for Justice League, and the focus got shifted, just as when Superman TAS and the second incarnation of Batman TAS were dropped in favor of Batman Beyond. Personally, I really liked Batman Beyond, not at first, but later, when they were doing it properly, with Bruce starting to help Terry out less, and Terry becoming less of a glorified Robin. Justice League could be done well--it just isn't a lot of the time. For instance, Batman's abilities are way too weakened in this incarnation. For instance, like every other episode, (not really, but close enough) he gets knocked out from behind. Yet that's supposed to be something he never falls for. Plus the story often takes a backseat to the action. Anyway, that's all my opinion, I make no claim it's a fact.
