CJJ's Spring Custom Contest (More Info to Come)

Title says it all (well, not really).
FOUR entries are allowed---if I can come up with twelve prizes, there will be a first, second, and third place for each category. AndrewDSZ has been gracious enough to provide several prizes, as has Raphsation!!! If anyone else would like to donate prizes, it is still not too late!!! I will compensate for however many we need in addition to however many prizes are donated.

Most Interesting/Humorous/Thought-Provoking, etc.
Most Accurate Rendition of a Character
Best Result with Least Amount of Effort (I had thought of this, and forgotten it, and then Ecto's Robo-Leo made me remember I'd created this fourth category!!! :tlol:)

Any entry can win in more than one category and in as many as all four, the best case scenario for any participant being that they win first place in ALL four categories AND have more votes for their entry/entries in each category, which would POSSIBLY allow him/her first dibs on four of twelve prizes. Winning first place in any category doesn't guarantee first dibs on a prize--but it increases your chances of having first dibs on said prize greatly.
You MAY enter customs that were already works in progress when I posted that we were having this contest.

You MAY post as many pictures of your entries as you would like in this thread, but you must choose only ONE picture of each entry to send me for the voting threads.

I am not putting a size limit on entry pictures, but let’s PLEASE be reasonable-- the pictures of your entries should be viewable without having to do an excessive amount of scrolling.

You may submit group entries.

You MAY submit fan-made characters.

You may only submit four entries, in any combination you wish. If you would like to submit all four entries in one category, that's fine...but you can't enter any of them in any other categories if you choose to go that route.

All entries must be sent via PM to me.

I dont feel its unreasonable but dont base it off me. I have a number of projects in the works and until they're done I just cant start any more. I just like completing my queue before adding to it :)

Er...yeah. Have you not looked at the categories? You haven't been here long which is why you don't understand that I'm here primarily to worship TMNTs, not like SOME peoples. Having said that, I'm not going to be TOO strict. I'll allow cross-over type stuff (ex. Darth Shredder) or stuff that is only tangentially related (Gizmo and Fluffy, Usagi and Gen, etc). If you have a specific idea you'd like to ask me about before starting work I'm only a PM away.

Depending on getting the parts soon enough (despite a lack of a due date at the moment) and ultimately how long it will take to sculpt, mold, paint, sew, etc I'm probably in. I'm not all about entering a contest to only show progress of something I'm working on instead of a finished piece. I feel its an unfair and waste of an entry. I'll have to get back to you on that...but most of us have pretty distinct styles, so it would be hard to pull off in my opinion. If I suspect someone has done something in poor taste I'll require some sort of proof.

No but thats a great idea for a custom 'Nobody'.

Judge mine knowing that I suck at customs & technically these are the first I've ever made... I tried making one once and just didn't get anywhere with it.

These two are both made from scratch, no bases or parts from other figures.

The first is... Clayman from the arcade version of turtles in time! This photo is him with toon mikey to show the scale. I would've made him bigger but I ran out of materials lol. The eyes are colored with sharpie. I'm almost positive his eyes are supposed to be yellow but I knew they wouldnt show up so good, red was the alternative. I used model magic, amarco clay, vinegar, toothpicks & a sharpie. I know he looks patchy/sloppy but I did that on purpose hoping it would give that 'sludge' appearance he has in the game.

My second is rather simple, its Spot from Usagi Yojimbo. The darkhorse figurine came with a spot 'accessory' but the playmates version did not, as he hadn't appeared in Usagi's episodes. Model magic, a hilighter, & a sharpie were the tools involved.

I really like the Spot one! I used to use Model Magic like mad, did a lot of stuff with it (my Ch'rell was made of Model Magic). Great medium, not the sturdiest thing in the world but I used super-glue to reinforce pieces that were sculpted separately as parts of one figure. I wish I had pictures of the Squid-Billies I made, I'd definitely post those just for fun if I did...

Thanks man, I appreciate the kind words. (I knew the name was wrong! lmfao now I've got it.) He is in scale with the 2k3 ripped up turtles but they don't photograph so well lol. If in the future I get better at customizing (through practice) I would probably cut a figure in half and build it up from there to be in scale and have better details.

Spot, to my own surprise was very easy to make & quite a pleasant result. He looks great with the actual spot toy too so now my Usagi's can have a few Tokkage to mess with.

I was going to do Renet, but I ruined the figure trying to strip the paint off of it using a technique that works on scale model parts.:x It was a previous custom I did in the early 90's, I was trying to re-use.

So, it's back to the Casey, Rat KIng and a repaint of Heavy Metal Raph.

Marvel Legends Black Panther is a far better choice. I know because I made it in '07 :P

While you would think that, if you study every artists images of Nobody you will see that Black Panthers costume is way to busy for Nobody.
I've been trying to choose the exact figure to use for some time.
I was going to go with Marvel Legends Moonknight but went against it as well because of the size and I'm also not a huge fan of those fat ball joints they use.
To each his own I say though, it def. wasn't a bad custom. :)

I love your Ninjara, Topsu! I think Man-bat's lower legs are kinda scary for a sexy fox girl, but I'm really impressed with how clean you got the paint on the pants. That is paint, right? It's so smooth I'd almost swear you found a figure with purple legs for the job. :)

Everything above knees is ML She-Hulk.
- sculpted head
- sculpted tail over steelwire and aluminum foil
- smoothed some cracks in her suit and gave her bigger breasts
- sculpted some fur in her arms
- belt is a rubberband with sculpted beltbuckle
Below knees DCUC Manbat
- cut away one claw in middle of lower leg

Gave her a full paint job, fur with brown + dark brown wash, top with purple + dark purple wash and pants with light purple. Some red drybrushing in some parts. Eyes were hardest to paint....

To be honest, my girlfriend said that She-Hulk had too small breasts for Ninjara, so I had to make them bigger...

Oh, and Wes! Too scary legs? should I sculpt them being more furry or something? Since I just noticed she needs sandals too...

Topsu, I think it's the feet. Doesn't Ninjara have normal looking fox feet? Adding a fur effect may help the legs look more like they go with the body, but those toes are the center of what's off. Maybe if the middle toe wasn't so big...

It's the second I've seen, and yep, it does look better. You can find other by google image search "ninjara custom" but I won't link it, since actual page has turned into some kind of security thread. Going to change those legs and toes when I have time....

Sanding would have worked on batmans mouth or a head swap.
Painting a moonknight isn't that hard but both he and blackpanther have way to much detail going on nobody is a very simple guy, but like you said to each his own. But yeah The other reason I go with DCUC is because the same guys that sculpted the neca TMNT are the same guys doing that line.
The scale is pretty much perfect.

Casey is still in painting, but Nightwatcher is done (including alternate head). Working on an April (Ninja-ish) and a big upgrade to my Karai as well. Then I have something fun as well. So, will group entries be allowed or does each figure count as it's own entry?

PS April is planned to be one based on a ninja-ish version of her (because that's the parts I have). Not sure what weapon she should use. She's been know to use swords, but that's so cliché.

It's a WIP I still need to find Rats in that scale and I'm trying to figure out how to do the Shuriken Stabs. (and removable Shuriken without leaving gaping holes on the fig.)

The Nightwatcher, nope. Started him last month. That's party due to finding the helmet within a few days of starting. The Casey, however, I started on when I first started making this scale. Legs - Final Battle Movie Storm Shadow (most non-military Joe legs out there)
Hands - Night Adder (Copperhead's hands are closer, but I don't have the paint to make it look good)

It ain't perfect and it ain't the OT April (Still working on getting that one together). This one is loosely based on her jumpsuit from the 4th season of 2k3. Had to take liberties on the legs. The bun in the first pic is off center and to high. I've fixed that before the side view pic. Plan to take more liberties and make the strips yellow.

Not happy with the eyes. Think I'll paint them white again and retry the outline (maybe in gray). Might get rid of the black on the cheeks as well. I am happy with the grill, nose, and buckles.

At this point the deadline has been extended to the last day of May. At that point I will either have everyone PM me their submissions, or I will create a separate thread for everyone to post their entries to since this one is becoming cluttered a few days prior to the deadline.

At this point I am probably going to have plenty of prizes for the winners (in addition to what other members have graciously donated).

Thanks again to everyone who has chosen to participate and/or donate resources for this contest. Several members have insisted they don't want prizes, but I'm thinking I might also look into throwing three gift certificates to myteefinestuff.com into the prize mix (nine winners will receive prizes, as there will be a first, second, and third prize winner for each category. Finally, a Turtle! Still working to make a full body one, but this is as close as it gets without a custom torso (just got it in the mail!). I've thought about making him for some time, but didn't like the idea of making him without an alt head without the helmet on. Once I got the Tri-Gate head, I put this together in under a day. He's a bit taller than he should be. I'm just happy to have a Turtle.

Thanks for the compliment. To clear some stuff up about whether or not I made it for the contest: When I started making it, no it wasn't for the contest. In fact, I started making it before i even knew this site existed. If this makes any difference though, he wasn't "premade". I didn't start on him until April 18th (you can check out the progress log here if you'd like: http://www.thefwoosh.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=93&t=65175&sid=2bc17d5463d7c67d66ef5f245f09f02c ) which is a couple weeks after the contest started. If people aren't comfortable with him being entered though, thats fine, I'll remove him from consideration.

About him being on eBay: I'm what you'd call a "for profit organization", I sell literally everything I make.

Ha ha yeah, I don't think the start date matters! I started my Shredder like... over a year ago... and I'm planning to enter it! Assuming I finish it, anyway, which I may not. I keep noticing tiny blemishes and paint rub issues and sanding/resculpting/repainting entire areas to fix them. :(

I just think some people take issue with being up against "professional" customizers, whiskey! I mean, I have no problem with you entering, but I'll admittedly feel kinda bad if you make a killing on that figure and win all the prizes here too.

But I'll forgive you if you give me your secrets for preventing paint rub. ;)

Warrior Dragon was Hothead in the Archie comics. Personally, I like the toy's colors better.

You can't, however, post more than one picture per entry--there will be three separate voting threads (one per category) and you will have to let me know which category you feel suits each image. If you've only done one custom for the contest, you can still enter it in more than one category provided that it meets the requirements. If you've done more than one entry and want them all entered in the same category, that's fine, they simply can't be entered in the other two categories. I want people to potentially be able to enter two or three categories even if they've only done one entry, provided that that entry meets the requirements for more than one category-- I'll try to stretch those, and to avoid problems I will allow you to appeal to a panel if necessary (because if you are someone I don't necessarily get along with, I don't want people saying I didn't allow you to enter out of spite).

I believe the categories are listed in one of my earlier posts, so if specific questions or concerned, contact me and I'll try to clear those up.

It just so happens that I have some REALLY good red paint, and since I felt sorry for my poor Grand Slammin' Raph that I got when I was really little for cutting off his hat (and the top of his head with it), I sculpted him a doo rag out of Model Magic, painted it red, and sealed it up with Mod Podge. He's not likely to be an entry for this contest but I thought I'd share him anyway. Maybe I should paint his clothing red to match? We'll see.

If anyone has a small baseball helmet that would fit him, I'd be interested in buying it or trading some custom fodder for it.

The Raph looks great. Aside from the expression (What Raph head is that?), that's exactly what I thought a Playmates version would look like. Don's way off, but still a good effort. Coats can be a huge pain to get right. Belt's good though. Now ya just need better pictures:P

Finally have an April figure. Check the above posts for her reference picture. In season 4 of the 2003 series, April got a new jumpsuit. She appears in the intro this way and one or two episodes (ones I've only seen 1-2 times, so I'd have to get help pointing them out). I really liked this suit because her tiny shirt design never sat well with me. Don't get me wrong I like that design and all, but it just didn't always work (Especially when she was working in a lab). Really wish she had used this one more. Weapons wise, I gave her some Butterfly swords and a short sword on her back. Like Casey, she has white strips on the sides that can't been seen head on. The hair turned out far better than I thought it would. I only dislike that it's the same color as Casey's shirt. Overall, I'm happy with her. Still hope to make the old toon April as well.

She is sooooooooooo close. Theres only one single problem I have with her: Her legs are uneven. The left leg is longer. It's the combination of the leg parts that makes it that way. Sadly, those are the only upper legs that work with both the torso and lower legs. Oh well, she's in action poses most of the time anyways. It's still better than those original crappy legs I had on her. Originally, she had a chain coming off her belt. Now, I've taken that chain and made her a full kusarigama. Amazing how many chain weapons I've made and this is only the first time I've done a correct kusarigama. The daggers have been replaced because the old ones were to tight and it was putting paint off. In the past, Star has nicknamed these daggers "letter openers."

Out of the four, his my least liked too. I just wanted a Turtle in that scale and it will still be awhile before I finish my full body one. Once I have a full body Raph, I plan to leave the helmet on him. Looks better.

Had an extra Metalhead lying around. Repainted the entire figure minus the metallic shell/plastron. I didn't like how he turned out at first but he's really grown on me and I like him a lot now.

This is Mecaturtle from the original NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game. Basically, he's an evil, off-color ninja turtle that transforms into a death droid. The turtle form is farther along than the robot, but they're both nearing completion. The robot will be floating mid-air, on a transparent stand--I'm probably going to add some rocket thrust flames to either his feet of back (maybe both) and possibly a homing missile suspended in the air in front of him.

The two-stage boss found at the rooftop conclusion of Level 3 in Konami's (published under the Ultra label) original 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) video game (it was also released on various computer platforms, and, more recently, as downloadable content on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console). Both the turtle and robot forms must be defeated, one after another, to save the TMNT's ratnapped master, Splinter, and proceed onwards to Level 4.

In reptile form, Mecaturtle runs and leaps about with great agility, slashing away at its foes with a razor-sharp ninjato sword. Should an adversary prove capable of besting the villain at this stage, Mecaturtle will change into its true shape, that of a deadly combat droid. This form is considerably more dangerous than the pseudo-terrapin and sports numerous attack capabilities: Jet thrusters in Mecaturtle's feet and back allow the mechanical menace to rocket through the air with ease. While airborne, it can lift its head, in a lid-like fashion, to launch homing missiles out of its torso. The robot's forearms can also reconfigure themselves, on the fly, to become either twin cannons or titanium blades.

Newsprint, tissue paper, white glue, super glue, plastic, and acrylic paint.

Turtle Form: 2.7 cm/1.1 in. x 2.9 cm/1.1 in. (widest point x highest point)

I have to be honest with you people, the figure is not really finished because I ran out of glue, so some parts of the armor and the belt are attached with blu tack. But the fig should look the same once everything is glued into place.

I just finished uploading all the pics I have taken this past week (something I was dreading doing) as I spent the better part of this week sick with something fierce that I didn't start to shake off/sweat out until today.

After I post these pics I am probably going to bed...meaning that I will put together the voting threads over the weekend.

We will have a total of twelve prizes awarded...some will be small, and others will be...almost as small but not quite. The only BIG prize I am aware of is the one that Raphsation has agreed to donate. I have a sh!t ton of custom fodder I am NEVER going to use, so I figure that most of the prizes I award will be comprised of THAT. THAT way, anyone who wants a prize can have one (provided he/she pays shipping on it, if you didn't place in first, second, or third). I usually only charge for shipping/handling on custom fodder.

Real toy companies wish they were that good. That's pretty much anything I could every want from a Shredder toy. Great job.
Thankssss! But the thing is, real toy companies are that good. Heck, Playmates is that good. Note that, with the exception of the claws, all of the really "Shreddery" pieces come from Playmates figures -- and vintage Playmates figures at that. They could pretty much hire anyone to sculpt a muscular, well-articulated body, stick those pieces on there, and release a Shredder that would garner a great deal of praise from fans and collectors alike. Sure, paint might be an issue, but even with a simpler paint job that recipe would prove pretty effective.

Oh, I just cut the head off of a triceratops from one of those $1 multipacks -- I think I got this one at Walmart years ago and never did anything with it. :tlol: If you wanted to put in a little more effort, you could even use the tails from some of those toys! I'm planning to do pretty much the same thing with a larger $1 triceratops and some Spawn figure, though unfortunately that figure doesn't have much articulation. It does, however, have an orange space suit... which means I probably won't bother to paint it. ;) Might paint the head some odd color just for fun, though.

All of the custom fodder I have is TMNT related. I really don't collect other lines much. I have some Dinosaurs (from the hit '90's TV series), Power Ranger flip-heads, a couple of Savage Dragon figures, and several figures portraying characters played by slightly obscure Jewish actor Jeff Goldblum, but that's about it.
