Since youtube has been bought out by Google, it's gone under the knife for copyright infringement. Many a good homemade music video using copyrighted songs has been erased, and many a good account holder, been suspended for sharing their favorite artists and songs. Ok, I can deal that the studios don't want their music to be discovered by the world, since the radio stations can play only 8 to 10 songs any given day.
But now, I go on there to check out what's going on in the world, via that country's POV, not the USA's contrived media, and I get this crap (this video not available in your country) WTF? I'm aware that this has been happening for a couple of years, but I haven't run into it until last week.
I put this in here, thinking it might spark up some political crap. I think it's disturbing that the informational superhighway is being controlled by corps and bureaucrats who want only certain views, movies, stories, music to be viewed. I'm sure some will say it's to protect via copyright law, but how far does one go from copyright protection to down right fascism?
This guy, hilarious IMO, but he says what's on my mind.!

This copyright-war has gotten way out of hand these last few years. The companies are losing it which makes them desperate and anything good rarely comes out of desperation, and they have the big money, lawyers and the lobbyists to make stupid **** like this happen. That's my point of view, anyway. We live in an Internet-based society, and the big corporations have to find a way to work with it, not against it. Short-term thinking ("We need profit NOOOOOWWWW, we can't afford to find a way to modify our methods") at this point won't do them or us any good.

Anyone who is passionate about anything and wants to make money at it knows that you have to put yourself out there and make yourself known many times (for nothing but actual hype) before you'll make any sort of profit as a result. Our very own Tokka is a perfect example. But businessmen don't think like artists many times. Artists are all about promoting their work for nothing but hype, but big corporations only care about the dollar. And since all they are doing is signing artists who have already done the work to establish strong fan bases, they don't really appreciate what it means to be an "artist."
If anyone disagrees with me, speak up. I love a good flame war :tlol:

Isn't this related to that whole net-neutrality thing?

This isn't entirely true, but it depends on how much of an artist you are. If you're doing it after hours as a hobby, while having another, non-artistic job secured - then yes, you can allow yourself to promote your work for nothing but hype, secretly hoping you will get famous one day and could change your job.
Unfortunately, if you are a full-time entertainer or creator and this is the only job you have to pay your rent, you find working for "nothing but hype that might profit in the future" rather useless. Especially since your audience prefers to leech the fruits of your work from the Internet, with the intention of MAYBE paying for them later, if they feel like it.
but big corporations only care about the dollar.
How shocking. Companies are established to create profits for investors. How dare they.

Hmmm, I remember reading in the paper back in the 80's of how some Russian who was going to school in the USA was creating an engine that could get 100 miles to the gallon. He was approached by Chrysler and Shell, his invention bought up by them, and the engine and it's design just disappeared. The who and where may have changed, but I know the story about the little engine that could, was abolished out of existence by big corps with other interests still floats around.
With that aside, there was a time when I could go onto youtube, and be exposed to so much music. There were songs and artists that I grew to love and bought their albums, but I never would have become aware of them without the internet. The radios sure as hell didn't play their music, and forget about MTV. So, how are the studios going to make money off of their artists if I don't know about them? Take Shiny Toy Guns for instance. Took a car commercial for me to realize that girl with the haunting voice exist. After all the commotion over their cover of Major Tom, I've still yet to hear it on the radio. And it's a fantastic cover. Shame they aren't getting promoted enough. It was when I was going to look at other work they did on youtube, when I ran into that crap about not being available in my country.

To be fair, although Google has owned YouTube for a while, it's really been since 2010 when they started to change it... AKA **** it all up.
The one thing I'm amazed at is I've had YouTube take down a few of my videos music for copyright laws, sometimes INSTANTLY, yet the other day I saw three videos back to back with tits in them. Crazy.

I thought the google buyout sucked, I rewatched the entire run of yu-yu hakusho and a good chunk of BTAS and then they were all gone due to copywright sh*t.
Also there were a lot of music videos that were not only trippy as hell but the music sounded awesome, but now alas they are gone. Plus a lot of tribute videos are effin muted as well as wrestling matches and stuff like that.

I agree. It's always like this when an older industry is threatened by a newer (like "Video Killed the Radio Star"). In the 1950's and 60's, people getting television reduced the number of people going to cinema. By 1978-1979, the arrival disco music almost killed dansband music off in Sweden (you've probably seen the "Diskoteken dödade dansbanden" clip from May 1979). Some years later, the cassette tape was reducing album and singles sales all around the world. The record companies answered with, which you probably know, "-Home Tapimg is Killing Music". They forgot to add "Industry"...
Funny, I've been thinking about Youtube these past few days now.
More and more Youtube disgusts me. The "not avalible in your country" crap ticks me off a little. Music videos that artists themselves have uploaded are taken down. A good example I think is LittleKuriboh and Yugioh Abridged. Love it or hate it, all the videos really are is just a guy dubbing over clips out of order to make his own original show. Yes, the animations used are from a well known franchise, but he had gone out of his way to make the videos original and unique and entertaining; just doing what Youtube originally encouraged. Then his account got banned and the videos stripped down for copyright infringement.
My BIGGEST gripe lately however, is something beyond that.
Advertising.
I can no longer watch Youtube ad free. Before videos play, just like in the cinemas and on television, I'm forced to watch and listen to an advertisement about Pantine Shampoo. Not only am I forced to sit through this to watch a video, but my DOWNLOAD LIMIT (which is VERY small) is chewed up because of it. Every single video. With a goddamn commercial you can't skip in front of it.
And even then there are pop ups while videos are playing! Advertisements for kid's bikes and advertisements for YOUR advertisements!!
Youtube is just a cracked and broken former shell of itself. And the worst part is that it is not going away any time soon.
