View Full Version : Do you guys want to see the Gang Wars finished or not?

From a Facebook conversation with Tristan:

I'm still keen to finish the Gang Wars arc, and I'd heard there was a strong possibility of it happening at Mirage still, because they can apparently still publish Mirage universe books. If Peter was willing to let me finish the arc, I'd do it in a heartbeat. And I know Paul and Andres would definitely be up for it too.

If we make enough noise about this and/or start a fan project based on Tristan's notes, it is possible that this will be picked back up by Mirage. Not definite, but more likely than if we say/do nothing at all.

I'd totally be interested. I love Tristan's work on TMNT.

Oh. And I started picking Tales up because of issue 36... :)

As an unresolved plot in the Mirage universe, I say definitely.

If he would write/publish it in a heartbeat, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I am going to need to put together a team...I think if we can produce the first issue as evidence that we are serious, Mirage might pick it up.

I don't see a reason why not. Not like Laird is gonna publish 18 issues a year by himself. :P </assuming I remembered the number correctly>

It's already pretty much written, it just needs to be scripted. There are notes up on my facebook page that people can check out. And I think I put some of the storylines up on my old blog before my google accounts were hacked into. From what I've been told, it's actually something Mirage can still do under that whole 18 issues a year thing, but I haven't heard from Peter since the sale, so I haven't really pursued it that hard. I kinda figured Pete was Turtled out and didn't want to bother him with it, but if I got the greenlight to finish it, I know Andres and Paul would both be keen to come back on board.

I'd like to see the story finished obviously, but at this point why was Tales canceled then if this story could have been part of it?

Now it would have to be released as a separate mini-series of sorts, not connected to Tales. And the first 3-4 (I forget how many), issues of this story were in Tales, yet the next parts of it would not be.

***First of Two Latin Kings***
05-08-2010, 06:44 PM
Well, it isn't like Mirage can' "un-cancel" Tales.

But why does that even matter? How is that any different from what will potentially happen in the next year or so concerning Image?

Because Image is publishing those books, these would be published by Mirage assumingly.

If Mirage wanted to continue the Gang Wars, it would have likely been part of Tales, so Tales would have continued past #70 for this.

TristanHuwJones

What was going to happen was this: Tales sales were abysmal towards the end. They'd been on a steady decline and everyone knows there were losing money on them. If Tales was to continue, it would've been a situation where I'd write a four part or three part or two part story, then there'd be an issue by Dan/Jim/whoever, then there'd be another gang war arc, and this would continue until it was done I guess. The other option was that Tales would be canceled, and a new book would take its place. This would finish the Gang War arc, or have potentially been a "reboot" book -- a TMNT book that went right back to the start and reworked everything to make it a more modern style of comic book, along the lines of Ultimate Marvel and All-Star DC. Familiar stories, told or reimagined in new ways (Tales stories set earlier in the continuity would be incorporated as they happened, new villains, some 2k7 stuff being reworked like we did with Hun, etc).

There was also the idea of a Shredder "Year One" style story that Paul and I were mapping out. All that stuff in #56 about Hun and the Shredder was going to be in there, and it was basically everything that led Oroku Saki to become the Shredder and the rise of the Foot Clan in NYC. I think we had it ending with the stand-off between him and Hamato Yoshi. The two core arcs were Saki hunting Yoshi and Saki establishing himself in the criminal underworld.

So if Tales sales were abysmal, why would a new series do better?

I imagine a mini-series with only about 5 issues would be doable, but not a whole series at this point.

To remedy that, if it was going to be published in a new book, then I was going to open with something of a recap oneshot, a book that quickly retold everything you needed to know in the gang wars so far and then picked up during the meeting at the end of #64. There's also the possibility of reprinting those issues under the new title, if it came to be.

I have a lot of faith that this could be pulled off...we just need to make the kind of noise about it that will show Mirage and/or Viacom that these will sell out.

So if Tales sales were abysmal, why would a new series do better?

I imagine a mini-series with only about 5 issues would be doable, but not a whole series at this point.

Because it's not the kind of book that people can invest in properly. This is why IDW's Ghostbusters are doing so poorly. People WANT ongoing storylines. It's amazing that Tales actually made it to 70 issues when it jumps all over the continuity like it does.

For a non-TMNT comic fan, Tales is an amazingly hard book to get into. One issue it's telling you this fun story set in outer space that doesn't really have any impact on the overall story, then next issue it's a continuity heavy story set between two issues that haven't seen print since 1988.

A new book, with new marketing, new title and an ongoing story that people could invest in, that came out on a monthly basis is what TMNT needed.

It came down to this -- Tales and Volume 4 were not market friendly books. Not in today's comic book market. That's not to say they weren't good books, they just didn't work in the current climate.

With all due respect--and I cannot stress that enough--I think all of us are aware (on some level) of the poor marketing choices that were made regarding both books. Vol. 4 was bi-monthly and felt like it took place in a different universe altogether, and so only the most hardcore fans (people along for the ride regardless of what kind of ride it was) were going to stay interested with two months between books. Not only that, but it got to the point where we never knew when it was coming out again or if it WAS ever coming out again (look where we are now--there's an issue supposedly finished, but it hasn't hit print). I do agree with you as far as Tales of the TMNT Vol. 2 was concerned--it would have made more sense to do longer story arcs and not have them spaced apart with irrelevant issues in between because it got hard to keep track of what happened when. Just look at how well the first mini series (Blind Sight) did. It's completely sold out and was eventually collected. So I think that four or five issues of Harmon and Jones in a row might do better than Tales did.

I just don't like the idea of an ongoing series based on one particular story.

Even if it wasn't a story to someone's particular liking, it wouldn't do them any harm for the story to be finished.

TristanHuwJones
05-09-2010, 01:31 AM
I just don't like the idea of an ongoing series based on one particular story.

Look at it this way. It's one LARGE arc with a ******** of smaller arcs building up to what was essentially a battle that made City at War look like a walk in the park. It's not just one story either. They all weave together with an end-point in mind. There are consequences to events set in motion at particular points in the meta-arc that form their own stories. The Savanti Romero story had nothing to do with the gang wars outside of the fact that something that happens in the gang wars allows him to come back. After that, the gang wars take a whole new turn because of what happened when Romero returned.

A mini-series to wrap this up is fine, but a whole new series? Yes. Trust me.

What would you call it?

Ninja Turtles. Hasn't been done before, but immediately more recognisable than TMNT and easier/edgier than Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

And besides, how far would a new series go before it finds the same funding problems?

That all comes down to marketing, and the creative teams. Color might help, but it's not necessary. If people outside the fanbase like what's being written and how it looks, they'll pick it up. And can you imagine the noise other websites like Newsarama will make once they catch wind that a "brand new" Turtles comic is starting, NOT written by Peter Laird or Keving Eastman AND out of Mirage -- the company that made big crazy news by SELLING that property? And holy ****, it's the dark, edgy Turtles the general public craves (but never realised they already had)?! AND THE SHREDDER'S IN IT?!! ZOMG!!1!

When it comes to numbers and funding, comics rely on pre-hype and word of mouth. Make enough noise and get enough people interested -- then keep them interested -- and you're fine.

Tristan's stories have honestly been my favorite books for the longest time. What all do you need accomplished and what kind of help do you need?

I'm even must more intrigued after reading that post, Tristan. I'd get the comics one way or another for sure. Your stories are some of my favorites.

I dunno if I wanna hop on the 'bug laird' bandwagon though, I've never spoken to the man before and would feel weird harassing him after he's finally gotten the much-deserved break (even though, I wish he'd waited 'til after a majority of projects were completed. rawr!)

TristanHuwJones
05-09-2010, 02:25 AM
No, I don't condone it either. I'm sure the Turtles will eventually come back through Mirage in one way or another, and even then Pete may have very little to do with it (or vice versa). I'm just saying it's pretty much out of my hands beyond what I hold on to from that time.

Roseangelo
05-09-2010, 02:39 AM
How has this gone from completing a story arc to launching a brand new series?

I'm over Mirage publishing comics and I really don't believe anything new could overcome the same troubles they've always run into. And technically Mirage has no staff. No reason to dig the grave deeper than it already is.

I do have very high hopes for what we could see of the Turtles out of a new studio, though. Very high hopes.

Ninjinister

It's stuff like this that makes me a bit conflicted. I'm totally in support of this happening... but everyone knows I'm not a contributor. I've turned down so many things here at the Drome from collaborations to contests. My entries to the custom figure contests were simply because I was already doing something to begin with.

Then we have the fact that whenever I actually have gotten some virtual one-on-one time with any of the big names over at Mirage, I usually have gotten the feeling like they basically wanted to say "Buzz off, kid." even upon simply introducing myself.

I see folks around here actually working on what are/may be officially sanctioned TMNT products (whether it be an art pin-up or revitalizing a dead project), or fan projects (blogs, documentaries, videos) and I kind of feel like I want to be a part of it, but then I realize that A) I'm not much of a contributor, B) I have no talent, and C) There's already a swarm of people working on this thing or waiting in line to do it, and me being there isn't going to change anything.

So as far as maybe yelling in the right direction once it's been pointed out, and buying the thing once it's on shelves, I'm totally there. Everything outside of that... I'm better off vetoing.

If they're just going to wrap up the Gang Wars, the best way to do it would be in a graphic novel. Just call it "Tales of the TMNT Collected Books volume 6".

But yeah, new series would be cool.

That all comes down to marketing, and the creative teams. Color might help, but it's not necessary. If people outside the fanbase like what's being written and how it looks, they'll pick it up. I pretty much echo what's already been said.

I would love to see the arc completed like you wouldn't believe, but I can't conceive of a practical way to do it.

As much as I love them, Mirage is not a good publisher and they rely on some of the most outdated and bone-headed business practices known to man. Plus, as has been mentioned, they're operating on a skeleton crew, anyway.

The only way I can see this getting done is if a different publisher (whoever Nick licenses to) feel "encouraged" to continue on in continuity and maybe wrap this arc up. It's not entirely unheard of, I suppose.

Right now, IDW has their own brand new ongoing GI Joe series, but they're also starting up a continuation of the original Marvel series, even carrying on the original number at #156 (and ignoring all of the Devil's Due series).

It's rare, but not unheard of.

We could try "bugging" Laird, but I wouldn't recommend it. The guy comes across as, well, bitter. As in, if you ask him to do something, he'll dot he opposite simply out of spite. So I imagine annoying him with requests would be counter-productive.

So I'm at a loss as to WHAT could be done to see a conclusion published. Mirage could try and publish it themselves, but it would just suffer all the same problems and setbacks that everything ELSE they've published over the past 10 years have.

And don't expect to see any potential collected version in book stores.

You have my support Tristan, even if I do sound like a total killjoy. If something can be worked out, I'll support it as best I can.

CyberCubed

Ninja Turtles. Hasn't been done before, but immediately more recognisable than TMNT and easier/edgier than Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

But then people will think its a new continuity, which it is not. The problem is the Gang Wars story continues from City at War, which has to my knowledge never been reprinted since the 90's.

And if a new publisher not named Mirage does get the TMNT license, why would they want to continue off an existing story? The editors will probably want a "clean slate" so new readers could hop aboard, unlike this where half the story is in Volume 1 and the other half is in Tales.

Hey Tristan, are/were Gordon Miller and his partner going to be reoccurring characters in this plot?

Wondering 'cause I write fan fiction (incidentally, nothing you'd be interested in I'm sure :trazz: ) and am curious if the characters will have more depth put into them or if they're only one-shot characters. I'll be sad if it's the latter.

So is the point of this thread to get people to begin a word of mouth movement for the completion of Gang Wars? or is this supposed to get people together to work on stories by Tristan in order to build a product that can be used to further pitch the rest of the stories? At times this thread has felt a little like both. Either way I'm definitely interested in both, because I've really enjoyed the arc so far.

If you need help from people to make the art for the book please look at my Turtle art and please consider me. I'd love to get involved in this anyway I possibly could.

My website is http://garyradziak.carbonmade.com

Last year I began working on a turtle comic about Michelangelo. If you look at the top row on my site there is a link to the pages I felt were the best. On the third row there is a link to the entire story so far. It is missing the opening splash page and the last three pages I believe are only works in progress, page 8 lacking black and white coloring, page 9 95% drawn, and 10 and 11 are only early drafts. Pages 2-6 are complete. The story itself was only planned to be half a comic long.

Thanks, Gary

As far as I know, Tristan DOESN'T have an artist unless Mirage decides to pick this arc back up (not the one I'd like to see work on this series, anyway).

To answer Rose's question, this thread was started to discuss the possibility of pushing for the continuation/conclusion of the THJ story arc. As far as a team is concerned, if we started doing this as a fan project and Mirage and/or Viacom got wind and knew how much interest there was, maybe it would get picked up. I'm not that great of an artist compared to others on this board but I'm not going to pull together a team of people to work on it and not do anything myself.

Oh yeah. One of my favorite "never to be" sequences or plot points had Miller or Whitmire's family being targeted and used against them to extract info on the Turtles. Gordon was the one who locked Hun away, and you find out he had a hand in the investigation into Tang Shen and Hamato Yoshi's deaths. Big plans for Miller's son, too.

Whitmire appeared a second time in "Sometimes They Come Back", while Gordon reappeared in "Hun". Both are referenced and appear "off-camera" in "Expose".

Eventually things reach a point where New York is basically under the thumb of a shadow government of sorts. The gang wars and corruption gets so out of hand that the military are brought in, and even that causes more problems than it should, as you find out why there's this absence of superheros during this particular timeframe of the Mirage chronology. Cobra manages to make use of some of the Mousers left over after #61 (but not quite in the way they're intended to be or have been used in the past), the Baron vies for control using the Black Magic drug mentioned in "Hun" and "Burning Man", there's a ******** of supernatural "kung-fu-sploitation" stemming out of the events of "Burning Man", Splinter comes back from NH, undead ninjas, a dragon demon, Bishop gets revealed, Touch and Go were going to be brought in (in a sense), Savanti Romero, the guy that was spying on the Turtles in April's apartment WAY back in Vol. 1, Ross's "Change of Power" was going to get wrapped up (very differently to what was intended though -- kind of how I'd do it, but I'd still double check it with Ross), Murph's trio of Mystics, Karai and something of a new spin on the Shredder legacy. There's heaps of **** here written down -- the nature of the mutagen and its affect on humans, Hun's family, the Puzzorelli family, vampires and vampire slayers, the cabal, the data that Razorback and his men were after... all kinds of ****, all culminating in a pretty epic battle that would've put a pretty solid end to things.

Dude! They have to let you finish this story! It's the best way to end the Mirage era.

Oh god. ILU >.>

Seriously, I have nothing else. ;_;

HAHA! Thanks guys. The Dark Horse thing won't happen either. They made their play from what I'd heard and it didn't work out. Like I said, I think the only way this could get done properly would be if Pete gave me the go ahead to do it under his 18 issue a year agreement, but I'm pretty sure he's pretty over Turtles so I'm not going to bug him about it. If it happens, it happens.

These aren't the finer details either, these are just big nasty story blasts, the finer details would have me here all weekend :P

If you read PL's current blog entries it really feels as if he wants to currently distance himself from TMNT as much as possible for the time being.

Unless another company gets the license, I wouldn't expect any TMNT comics for at least a couple years, except the Image conclusion.

Even if something did start tomorrow it probably wouldn't hit for at least a year. Gotta write, edit, rewrite, draw, ink, tone, letter, put together, market and publish. Not stufff that ever really happens over night...

So since Mirage is done forever based on PL's blog comments, what is going to happen now?

Any plans? Rumors? A way to finish this story?

This and Volume 4 are the only two long-running plots that *really* need closure, everything else doesn't really need that much closure.
