View Full Version : What was the point of the technodrome?

The stupid thing never worked most of the time and most of the episodes where about finding fuel or getting it unstuck. For a massive war fortress the thing was pretty useless. Krang and Shredder never had enough power to keep it running and it was falling apart most of the time. Why did the creators even bother having the technodrome in the story if they couldn't even have it work half the time?

it's a mobile fortress, filled with alien technology to conquer worlds, and bring doomsday.

It only needed a oil check

And it was made in early 90´s and it still smell like the 80´s.

If the Technodrome was constantly operational, it would just smash through cities and the Turtles would have to stop it again, just like they did in the Season 3 finale.

I also think that's the running joke. Shredder/Krang had a huge battle machine that couldn't do anything and got constantly stuck underground, in Dimension X, in the Arctic, underwater, in a blackhole, and where it wound up at the end of the show.

Precisely. It was a pretty good idea, I'd say. Also, it makes sense for Krang to display a certain amount of caution about the Technodrome (which he does quite often), seeing as it is pretty much the only bastion of his once vast empire left to him.

It was a unique and powerful weapon that was turned into a joke. It's like having a ferrari that is amazingly fast and responsive but always needs a jump start. The technodrome was fully functional for most of Season 1. If you watch Shredder and Splintered you'll see that this thing is PACKED with artillery and how powerful it is. Rocket launchers, canons and all kinds of mounted guns and rays. The technodrome is pretty much Krang and Shredder's Death Star. In latter episodes they made it dysfunctional because it was too powerful to be continuously featured as a prime weapon/vehicle for the villains. Come to think of it theres more similarities to Star Wars. Krang and Shredder are more or less like the Emperor and Vader. Shredder also has a facemask and helmet and is (was) voiced by African American

Well they needed a reason for it not to be operational. If it was, then it would be hard to explain why would they get defeated every time and it wouldnt really be a powerful weapon. Look at the episodes in which Technodrome attacks. It does massive chaos and damage.

With nearly 1000 rooms, there's still plenty to imagine what we've never seen inside the 'drome, from other mutants, booby traps, weapons, and even living quarters. It still provided the attention that we were cutting to the bad guys, similar to how the Autobot symbol would rotate to the Decepticon symbol in the G1 Transformers cartoon. The closest the Technodrome came to crushing someone was April in "The Big Break In", which just didn't happen thanks to good old cartoon physics. When we finally see the Technodrome in the final episode destroyed, it proved that the last time the Turtles forced the Technodrome in peril was finally for real and was probably my favorite thing about the final episode. It showed that Shredder/Krang had given up. Sure, Splinter didn't return to his human form, but he still felt proud for the Turtles and they lived the rest of their live in peace as evidenced by the episode "Once Upon a Time Machine". Otherwise, the Technodrome was mostly used as a transportation base during the time it was unable to move, which was quite a challenge given its locations (hundreds of miles underground, in a remote portion of Dimension X). The bark was almost always worse than the bite, and even when it did, it was mostly just a few buildings in just a few episodes. The Turtles just happened to be at the right place at the right time.

Here's something that I've long found odd...

In the first season the Technodrome seemed to be fully powered and mobile. Why did it never occur to the Shredder to actualy use it to stomp buildings and so forth.

Almost every season after recycled the theme of the Technodrome getting powered and loose from wherever it was stuck and the everyone panicking over the the destruction it would cause (or in some cases briefly causing mayhem) before finding a way to depower and strand it somewhere else. Why didn't the villains just conquer the city when it was energised and loose?

Here's another one that has always bugged me.

In Season 7 we get some backstory about the Technodrome that it was built by Drakus.

Maybe it's just me but I never got an alien vibe from the Technodrome. Taking away the Foot Symbol which Saki could have added himself it always seemed to be very terran in its design, both in and out.

Did the warlords banish Krang with the Technodrome? Not only that but conveniently banish him under the streets of NY. Even without a body it didn't seem like Krang had difficulty operating the Technodrome so he could have easily built himself a body and gone home.

Up until "Get Shredder" I always assumed it was built on Earth by the Foot using stolen human tech and Krang's know-how.

'Cause that way the villains would have won and the turtles would have lost. And we don't want that, don't we?

It didn't seem to stop the turtles any other time. They pretty much had banishing the 'drome down to a habit.

Why not beneath the streets? Or constructed it somewhere like ship yard or somewhere in the US that is secluded and out of the way?

Shredder did have human Foot as well as other workers like the seemingly human receptionist. Not to mention he could have built his robotic Foot first and had them build it like they built the Technodrome MK 2.

Come to think of it the MK 2 was built in plain site in Central Park overnight. I know it wasn't nearly as big but you'd think that it would attract some attention.

In the first episode, we see the Foot steal various kinds of technology. If you're correct, they must have used it for building the Technodrome.
However, that means they build that thing over night, which is impossible!

I think the Earth's core and the North Pole were the most brutal for the Technodrome. It was millions of degrees at the core so all the power was used for refrigeration. At the North Pole, they were always using power so they wouldn't freeze to death. Dimension-X on the asteroid was always strange because Krang's rock soldiers were nowhere to be seen but were found before Turtle Trek.

Having the Technodrome fully operational would be disastrous on a nightmare scale thus why the Turtles constantly put effort to thwart Shredder and his minions from getting the resources needed to power it back up. The Turtles could only send the Technodrome to a place where it won't cause damage or harm innocents but haven't found a way to destroy it.

The point of the Technodrome was to make a terrestrial version of a Death Star marketable to little kids. And to sell one expensive-ass toy. And no, it never served any purpose or ever delivered on its promise of "it'll be really badass when it's operational!" until "Turtles Forever."

But it came out 10 years after Star Wars.

"That thing's OPERATIONAL!!!" I always wanted one of the Turtles to say that line... LOL!!
