View Full Version : Classic Toy/Toon NECA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k594/destroed80/turtlegroup1.jpg
My favorite incarnation of the Turtles has always been the classic toy colors, to me thats the turtles most iconic look. And I wanted my Turtles to reflect that, I've always loved the color scheme, plus i like how all the turtles have different skin tones.

I did not take WIP pictures, but body wise they are the black and white neca turtles, but i resculpted there biceps and chest bigger. I felt it'd be more in proportion with the big feet, plus the toon/toy turtles were a bit buffer looking than the comic style sculpt arms and chest. I also redid the belt buckles
I tried best i could to match the toy colors but its a bit off, the chest shell color was a bitch to match, some of it's not 100% but limited by the amount of spray paint colors tamiya has. Paint wise these are tamiya spray paints bases with liquitex acrylic build up and nu pastel shading.

I also made a set of special accessories based on the cartoon gear. they were sculpted as well. I made the Turtle Comm i wasn't able to do the anntenna kept falling off. I also made Mikes, shell grappling hook thing he uses. Leo I made the weapons rack that the toys come packed with. For raph, I made Pizza one peperoni and one anchovie. I also made the boxes look like the Pizza boxes from the Turtles in time video game. The heart box refills your life and bomb box gives you the pizza power super attack thats what those are homages too...

Leo and Don should have shoulder straps like the 88 toys, but besides that I like it.

These might be some of the coolest NECA customs I've seen. I love how they look exactly like the box art from the old toys. Great job!

Thats how I feel lol. I've seen so many repaints that I almost let out a groan when I saw the thread title but these are so boss.
Awesome work! I'm not sure I like the resculpted biceps -- they just kinda look like balloons on the arms, as opposed to the clearly muscley (and veiny) biceps on the original figures -- but everything else about these is boss. If NECA had released these, I'd have bought a set for sure!

Great work! Those accessories take them over top!

Thats was something i intially really wanted to do, but when i was sizing straps on i dunno they looked off to me compared to how they rest on the classic figures, so i left them off.

I do think the biceps could be done better I did them kinda in a hurry and in retrospect i think i shoulda padded them with sand paper to match the skin texture on the neca figs better. They kinda stand out cause of how smooth they are.
and yeah overall on the lighting it came out kinda dark, they way i light stuff is by having lamps off to the right and left, but i don't have a front light. Because i always cast a shadow if i try, so i need to think of a way to front light a bit more in the future.
Thanks for the feedback everyone now I'm in the process of painting up bebop and rocksteady.

nice job...one question did you disassemble the figures to spray paint them or did you just do a lot of taping off?

those look sick! love em

Yes I took mine apart when i painted them. I didn't do any taping off except for the face bandannas which i used masking film on. I hate taping things off and tend to avoid it when i can...

how did you get them to hold the weapons i did the same thing to my neca figures i used acrylics and a clear coat over i even sanded all the joints down to make room the only issue im having now is every time i put a weapon in their hands it rubs the paint off any suggestions?...did you sand the palm down too?

I CHEATED! I didn't mine weapons have some paint flakes on the handels. If you look at all the pictures of the TMNT I've taken since then with my other customs I have not moved the weapons at all since then, because of the paint flaking. What i did for the non weapon holding shots was those were the first pictures I took before I put the weapons in there hands.
long ago on some of my early customs i used to try and prevent paint rub and I'd sand joints down and such to accomidate for the paint. But I'm really lazy now and don't do it, the paint rub doesn't bother me as much now. Even professional companies early prototypes have this issue when you see toys at cons. Thats how i rationalize my stuff as mock up prototypes. hehehe....

for my figures i used paint sealer, it stopped about 95% of the paint from rubbing off, also i pulled back the fingers on the figure that were closest together when inserting the weapons

I've seen a bunch of the B&W sets popping up with $70 BINs right now... Almost makes me want to grab a set to try this with.

Wow! These are so cool!:tsmile: Now THIS is a reissue of the classics figures. The figures look awesome, and I LOVE the accessories. Though I must say, the pizza should be Mike's accessory. Still, they look great. In fact, I just feel like saying this: I don't mind that Leo and Don don't have any straps. I'd play with or display these no matter what!:tgrin:
Just to add: I've always thought the NECA faces showed personality in the characters. The old Playmates ones just have gritting teeth.
'88 Leo: Like the figure, but I always thought he looked scared than angry. Thanks for giving him the angry look he deserves.:tcool:
Also, Mikey is smiling, unlike the angry looking '88 one. I love it.:twink:
I am a huge fan of those pizzas! The detail is much better than the detail of the pizzas made by Playmates. Toy companies need your talent!!

I agree, it's funny 'cause NECA turtles repainted to be OT turtles look just like the art on the boxes of the '88 line.
