What was so bad?

Yeah the voice acting wasn't to good, neither was the puppets. But... the show now that I just had a re watch of them were frankly not all to bad.

How about some opinions up for this show? I frankly don't mind it at all.

Venus comes off as a..... Mary sue. But I was very much entertained by this show.

I haven't finished the show yet but it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be based on opinions on the net.

I thought Venus was going to be a lot more irritating.

The voice acting was horrible. The turtles acted more silly then the OT turtles in Turtles Forever, and was down right dumb. most villains had potential but ended as a big "Meh"

2 clip-show episodes in the same freakin' season, way to go!

A shinobi is NOT a Chinese Shaman, it's just another word for NINJA.
Venus was okay, but still badly handled, didn't mind the turtles being blood related, it don't change the fact that the turtles are brother and splinter is their father.
And Shell boobs... she looks like a bad fan-made gender bender turtle, she only missed hair and she'd fit dA right away.

The suits was cheap looking, the dead soulless faces and their eyes... ugh!
And the character style was not a good one, Splinter looked like the stole some school mascot.
Action okay, the suits where more mobile, but still looked home made.

The Foot was pathetic characterized and Shredder looked okay, but had more of a Power Ranger villain look then The Shredder.

That sock puppet minion to Dragon Lord was terrible, the rank was a okay but not memorable adversaries.

The annoying, horrible overused slap stick sounds, made me almost falcon punch my computer watching the show.

I consider The Next Mutation to be a concept that had potential but then was horribly executed. But in a weird way, I kinda like bad things like that because they get my creative mind racing. I mean, if a show/movie/book/whatever is really good, I like playing with the ideas. But if it's really bad, I just get into this endless loop of "Well, I would have done it this way..." I actually did try to rewrite TNM several years ago.

But, yeah, despite all my eye-rolling, I did enjoy it for what it was. For the demographic it was meant for, as a silly, non-serious, action series, it had its moments.

Well who am I to judge, I've only seen one episode plus the Power Rangers crossover and remember tiny glimpses from my childhood. I use to think Next Mutation was a movie when I was little. But what I do know is that its just terrible, but outta curiosity I might watch the one and only season just because I'm a TMNT fan.

And was it true that there was going to be an animated 2nd season with April and Casey that got canceled?

The cheesiness makes Next Mutation watchable. I will admit to laughing at some of its sheer pathetic cheesiness. Which is why I like this show. It made not have been as purposely made to be cheesy but it just makes the show.

I sat through it today, and I quite enjoyed it. I will say, I find this show better then 2k3. 2k3 was cheesy in a bad way.

But oh well, it was just my taste. But there is no doubt it was still not that good.

So did I, since I have that 'East Meets West' or whatever VHS tape that edited the first...3-5 episodes or so together.

I liked it okay as a kid, and it's interesting for me to watch clips of episodes with the hunter guy now as he's a well-known anime voice actor, but overall...yeah...

Sadly, I'd probably buy it if it came out legit over here though, for completionist sake.

The sound effects, same reason I could never make it through an ep of Power Rangers... not that I ever intentionally tried to. I was just too nice a guy to tell people to stop watching that ritalin-infused irritation in my presence.

I thought it was a cool series. Should've been on Saturday mornings instead of Friday afternoons.

At least Mikey had something constructive to do with his time, hosting the Sewer Hour.

The series did have Raph drive a motorcycle for the first time.

The only dieappointment was that they never had an episode where they played as a band. Only the promo & clips of the closing credits have the TMNT band.

TNM is a flawed show but its not as terrible as the fandom makes it out to be, its actually pretty decent. I think it gets so much hate because most of the original turtle fans were already too old by the time this show aired, I was the perfect age, had I actually caught it on tv when it aired I would have loved it. I have an extensive review if you click the picture in my sig if you're interested in a more extended opinion.

hehe, people in the drome must think I'm a TNM fanboy since I'm usually defending it but not, its just that while its a flawed show its fairly decent and it does not deserve all the hate it gets so I always defend it even if it is not a great show.

The turtles acted more silly then the OT turtles in Turtles Forever, and was down right dumb. most villains had potential but ended as a big "Meh"
No way did the turtles act as silly as the OT in Turtles Forever, heck they don't act as silly as they do in TMNT 3.

Most villains did have potential to be awesome but they weren't "meh". Most got at least one episode were they were written very well. In fact I think the rouges gallery created for TNM are awesome and would love to see them in a different incarnation.

2 clip-show episodes in the same freakin' season, way to go!
Normally I'd agree, I hate clip shows but to their credit at least they had a theme, one about Raph/Leo's rivalry and the second all about venus which in turn feels like a tribute to her. So yeah I definitely found them more watchable than the average clip show.

Well her magic powers were rarely if at all used after the pilot. I didn't like her having magic powers either so its good they didn't use them much.
The turtles not being related makes more sense to me, but its not like it really matters, they did not pursue a romance besides the pilot were the turtles lusted after her. Turtle boobs made sense, how else would you easily tell she's female? its not like they were huger or anything.

Ironically Venus is the most interesting turtle and ironically she really wasn't shoved down our throats or got too much focus. So its odd that so much hate towards TNM is all shoved at her.

I liked the suits, didn't see them as cheap. Then again I wasn't expecting hensons suits. I also liked that they actually could do some cool stunts with the suits. I liked Splinters suit but he always looked out of scale, maybe its because the movies used a smaller splinter. He's technically not out of scale since he's about the same size as other TMNT incarnations but he always looked big to me for some reason.

Shredder and the foot didn't do anything really until the return of Shredder episode, which was awesome. He would have made a great villain in a second season.

Dragonlord and the Rank were awesome but sadly they got a lot of goofy episodes that took off the credibility they had in the good ones.

The annoying, horrible overused slap stick sounds, made me almost falcon punch my computer watching the show.
The sound-effects.

I've never seen a show whose watchability would be so dramatically increased just by removing most of the sound-effects. Whizz, boink!
Yes, THIS.
Take off the slapstick sound effects and TNM is easily MUCH better. Weird how much a sound effect can change the mood.

and the power rangers cross over, which just happened once and they never talked about it again, weird... shouldn't the turtles help the ranger in the end of the season since they where canonized into the power rangers verse, or where they just lazy eating pizza and watching Venus doing Yoga.
The PRs crossover is not technically TNM but a PRs episode. But if you count it, its easily the worst TNM episode, the turtles act even sillier and are way off character. However it does have some of the best fight scenes the entire series had and joined my two childhood shows so it has a soft spot in my heart for that.

As for the second question, Well theres dozens of PRs and other powered heroes and yet they never help each other out besides anniversary team ups ;)

i watched couple clips on youtube.

I couldnt BELIEVE how bad the show is,the stupid voice and fightin themes, the turtles act like buncha 4 yrs old w customs on(well, maybe giant sized 4 yrs old but still).

Taking clips from the show will definitely make it look to be much worse than it really is. Not a fair way to judge the show.

I honestly think I need to rewatch this series because I remember a lot of vaguethings about the show. But from what I remember here are some good ans bad aspects IMHO
the good
1-The Rogue gallery was pretty fleshed out. Silver and Bonesteel were pretty cool albeit very silly. Vam mi was ok.Also really like the concept of the Dragon Lord and eh Rank warriors. Shredder and th Foot were not a main threat at this point so I was ok with that, especially after how over used they had been in the OT. Dr Queeze was easily the most awesome villain from that damn show.
2-I like the TMNT Hummer. About time they got something other than a van. Also thought it was awesome that it said TRTL PWR.
3-I loved Donnie's "I'm smarter than you and you know it but you totally need me so there," attitude and how he always picked on Mikey. I prefer this over the 2K3 toon's constant Mikey smacking. I swear Raph should have gotten a chuck in the face by season 2.
4-some of the fight scenes were actually pretty good and although the suits weren't all that great, they provided quite a bit of mobility and for the most part their lips sync'd up with what they were saying. At least a bit better than in TMNT3.
5- Mikey's radio show was interesting at the very least. It was good that he did something constructive to harness his outgoing personality.
6-I like that they kept the lair from the previous movies. That lair is epic. Not too over the top but cool enough to be more believeable than an ancient cave that's powered by crystals.
The Bad
1- It's good to have a rogue's gallery but a lot of these villains were just jokes. Vam mi was my least favorite and what was up with the wierd voice overs? Nothing but irritating. Although I liked the Dragon Lord (sue me bastards) he was cheapened time and time again by suffering lame defeats and and lame episodes.
2-Shinobi is but another word for ninja, sometimes used to describe the most advanced ninjas.
3- Venus was just a bad character even more horribly portrayed/handled. Ok I get this was to cater to a larger audience and she was to (seemingly at least) have a romance with Leo, as well as a be a capapble fighter and be from China. But she was annoying and was way over powered. She easily the defeated teh Shredderand made the TMNT loo llame as hell and did the same thing to the Dragon Lord, all the while trying to make jokes and say phrases that were just wierd. And why the f*ck was Venus fighting with magic balls? I mean give her a freaking yari or something, not magic balls.
4-The sound effects, my god the sound effects. You start getting intoa a really cool fight scene and then a fart noise aor a bonk just kils the moment. I felt like the TMNT were fighting Bulk ans Skull from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers half the time.
5-why did they have such different bandanas? And the plastrons looked like something out of an exosuit er something.
6-Mikey constantly hitting on Venus got old very fast. I did like that Raph did not like her at all.
Yeah when the show first came out I enjoyed it, but even then I realized that the show was pretty bad. It was a neat concept at the very least.

Cipher

Shuriken, I actually quite like the rogues gallery as well. I even like aspects of the Turtles' portrayals.

The problem is that while I like these aspects in concept (Dragon Lord is a cool idea, Don being an *sshole is a cool idea, Splinter having a blind friend is a goddamn awesome idea), the execution is horrible. The show is filled with decent concepts marred by horrible execution, which owes itself to everything from low budgets to censorship to terrible sound-effects.

If he had played the guitar, instead of a tennis racket, my loyalty would've been switched from Raph to Mikey. And in my TMNT band, Mikey would play guitar (with Ex-Cel for a little rivalry) while Raph would've played the drums/tympani.

What a coincidence... I just got an email from Amazon France today. Fans can now buy the second half of the uncut series in French only. The first half has been available for years.

I might be interested in getting this and splicing it together with audio from the UK butchered versions someday. Still, that'd leave sizable, annoying gaps in the audio... unless someone would be kind enough to find me some American tv recordings to pull that audio from.

So like... what makes Saban or whoever think the European demand for this show is so much greater than the American.

I may just be that European distribution rights aren't as tied up in red tape as American ones.

Distribution rights vary from region to region some times, and Saban's library may be such a case.

Most of Saban's stuff has an easier time getting released in Europe, because I don't think they have to go through Disney for some reason over there. Germany has already released full season sets of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, while the UK has gotten Transformers: Robots in Disguise (Saban's only Transformers show) many times over in complete sets.

So it may not be a matter of demand, but more a matter of litigation and rights issues in the US.

No, that's not what I'm talking about at all.

The German Power Rangers DVDs were released long before Saban reacquired the rights from Disney, as were the UK Robots in Disguise DVDs.

I don't think Disney has any control of the distribution rights of the Saban library overseas.

sdp
06-17-2010, 12:48 PM
Disney still has distribution rights but for some reason or another its easier to get the license, the UK also saw the complete release of The Tick while Disney only put out two seasons and had to take out two episodes for legal reasons that didn't matter in the UK apparently.

Another interesting issue with Next Mutation is if it's set after the 1987 cartoon or after the films?

We just had a big discussion on this a while ago, it has nothing to do with the 1987 cartoon but it was created as set in the movie universe.

TNM is nothing like Power Rangers and only thing in common is they were both made by Saban and the crossover.

Not totally, but I mean you can't deny the similarities in villain designs and action sequences.

Does everybody really hate the NM that much? Is that why it only had one season? I was to little to remember the series pretty much but the couple episodes I do remember werent to bad.

Not really, TNM action scenes were done by an entirely different team and sadly weren't as good as the action scenes in PRs which is why the PR/TMNT crossover had better choreography than the actual TNM show.

I also disagree with the suits since most PRs villain designs and suits are from Japan.Maybe the idea of the Dragonlord's foot soldiers (The Rank) being used in a similar way to PRs but sadly The Rank really wasn't utilized that often.I really don't see any similarities. Not even the music since PRs usually has memorable music and TNM really didn't.

Everyone really does hate TNM that much but it really isn't that bad, its people overreacting. IIRC TNM actually got good ratings, it was cancelled because it was a licensed show and they also wanted to give PRs a bigger budget. I believe there were plans to continue a second season as an animated show. And while the show didnt do bad in ratings it also wasn't a success because if it had been then it would have definitely gotten a second season.

Technically, I didn't just now say they were anything alike, but off the top of my head: Core team of 5 heroes, not all one gender, live-action, cheesey as hell adventures, puppets/costumes lame enough to make the Kroft Brothers grit their teeth, and produced by Saban. Not a lot of similarities, but more than enough...

Well, :) Finally I got all Next Mutation and the PR crossover chapter and I saw them! :tgrin:
IMO, not as bad as I expected: quoting (it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be based on opinions on the net) ...
I enjoy most of the show after all....:D They are TMNT!
Venus is not so bad character, its a bit weird the magical thing, and Splinter knowing about her and his master...(3 first chapters are very rare....traying to explain the whole thing), ..
Without talk about effects /look/suits of the characters/muppets ...when you see all the episodes you get use to see them...LOL :lol: ...
I liked some scenes very similar to cartoon shows...for example when Raphael is gentle and kind with the blind man...or Raph argues with Leo...Mikey being "Mikey-party dude"...
I understand people that dont like the show, of course, :P ...Just In my case I like it enough for collect/save the show in my shelves/PC...but "not for be part of canon" if you permit me that expression....:tlol:

It would be cool if they did another live action show that was better. I remember that show and watched it as a preteen. We were entertained by it at the time. I just remember there were some really lame vampire bad guys and they played silly sound effects whenever they were on screen.

I can't imagine the show was so hated among children.

I haven´t seen all the episodes, but the ones I saw they show the turtles w/o motivations, like they are not brave or interested in fighting. they r sat on the couch watching tv. that´ll b ok for raph or mikey, but leo????

The first episode with the guy in front of the mirror has lame special effects.

I found the Ninja Turtles: TNM to be pretty terrible. And Venus really wasn't necessary. Should have just put in April but make her even more fun and hip.
And those outfits the TMNT were wearing were horribly garish.

It IS most likely just me, but I love the turtle suits in Next Mutation for some reason.

That's what I always thought. I stand on the side of all Aprils, being one myself.

Boy, just started watching this again after about 10+ years. I didn't remember how annoying the voice actors were. Why does Leo sound like a butched up surfer. He should sound kind of passive aggressive, I would think. And I didn't remember the silly sound effects once every second. They could get past the cheap suits with clever writing and such, but apparently that didn't occur to them.

Additionally, Raph's voice is obnoxiously high pitched. Also, some of the absolute worst editing I've seen.

TNM was made for little kiddies not old fans who grew out of the kiddie cartoon.

Venus was a joke. NO BOOBS! Turtles have no jiggly chichis!!
Technically, she should have been bigger then the boys, as female turtles are.

At least they kept some hint of Raph's attitude but the long shots on the bike were awful. The dude wore this awful looking raph mask with the mouth wide open and really drove like...5-10mph? LOL oh boy.

the sound fx were not needed and all the crap hanging off them, wtf conchos with rags and crap? paaleeezzeeee!!

TNM is terrible. Nothing good came out of this show. I remember when it first came on and I seen the PR crossover and I was just confused. That following Christmas my grandmother bought me a set of TNM figures with Venus and I slid em back under the tree and I have no idea what happened to them....:-?

And Venus was a terrible concept, I hope she stays dead...

I know. I loved how the guy on the bike kept weaving around like he couldn't see a thing. He was probably going, "Dear Lord, please take me when I come to your gates. And that'll probably be soon."

And the editing was so bad that I had no idea what was going on in their transitions. Like, "Why is Mike out by the van? Isn't he in the lair? Is that Raph or Mike?"

Their Leo scared me a little. He looked like a steroid crazed football player.

Even Irma should appear, but cooler. She was at least fun in the 1987 TMNT cartoon.

You do know she was as well a mutant? Thus such laws of turtles could possibly not apply to the TMNT universe.

Saying a female mutant turtle shouldn't have boobs is like saying a male mutant turtles shouldn't have big ol' biceps, triceps, 3 fingers, 2 toes. Seriously TMNT is just a big pile of WTF that you shouldn't try to interpret.

I was just about to make a thread about Next Mutation. Personally, its my 2nd favorite incarnation of the Turtles. After the live action movies, which I think precede the NM series.
However I'm sure this has to do with the fact I was born in 1994 and i'm 16 now. I was too young for the original cartoon (although I did know of it) and Next Mutation was the first of the Turtles I ever saw. I did enjoy the 2003 cartoon series too for a while, but lost interest. I've always loved the live action turtles best.
I'll have a read through this thread after.

Alright, I'm a huge mark for this series. And I admit it's mainly because this was the first Turtles I got familiar with and I just love the whole cheesey feel of it and the characters. My favorite new characters were Dr Quease, Dragonlord & Wick and Vam Mi the sexay chinese vampire. I just hate her two little kids (with ridiculously deep voices) and I was never a fan of Bonesteel either.
As I live in the UK i was able to get the series on DVD. Well, most of it. I have one DVD containing all 5 parts of the East Meets West pilot episode, one called 'Staff of Bu-Ki' which contains Staff Of Bu-Ki, Silver & Gold and Meet Dr Quease, and a 3-disk box set that contains the entire 2nd volume. I'm missing the last 3 episodes of volume 1 which are All in the Family, Trusting Dr Quease and Windfall. I'm not sure if they even got released on any DVDs which is strange, unless there was a 3-disk set containing all of volume 1 too.
