I've been lurking on here for a while, and have finally decided to share some of my work.

http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2010/169/b/5/Slash_the_Evil_TMNT_by_PsychoAndy.png

(Description taken from my deviantART page: http://psychoandy.deviantart.com)

I dig the old Playmates TMNT toys a lot, especially in their sculpting. But some of the paint jobs seem like total mis-cues, in a lot of cases. So I've taken it upon myself to repaint the toys in a way that they look and feel pretty awesome.

This is my repaint of Slash, the evil turtle from Dimenson X! Originally Bebop's pet turtle that he kept hidden from The Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady doused little Slash with a dose of experimental Super Mutagen, creating a completely insane and powerful mutant turtle.

I decided to make Slash less blue (lower left) and make his colors look more like those of an actual turtle. I also decided to paint his wooden shoulderpads so that they actually looked like wood. My old Slash toy had his claws broken off, but they were that same purple as the shoulderpads. Since the hero turtles all have brown knee and elbow pads, I continued that with Slash, and made the spikes look metallic.

100% acrylic paint on a Playmates TMNT Slash from 1990.

Hope you guys enjoy. :)

Were you trying to base him off the turtles in time slash? Cause he looks allot like the turtles in time slash colors. I really like that paint job. I think slash is one of the best sculpted old figures.

I'm always torn on slashes color scheme, cause while i can see people thinking its bright and gawdy, the regular toys green is just a really nice color to me and the toy popped, i've always liked it allot. But I also like the turtles in time and more realistic coloring hes had as well he looks more badass. I always have the damndest time deciding which look i like the best.

Truly great work, man! I was going to do that to an extra slash I have... but never got around to it (I'm lazy.) It wouldn't look as good as yours, tho!

Now do the other characters! :tgrin:

As I said, I dig the old Playmates TMNT toys a lot, especially in their sculpting. But some of the paint jobs seem like total mis-cues, in a lot of cases. Take, for instance, Groundchuck, whom you'll probably remember best as the level 2 boss from TMNTIII: The Manhattan Project for the NES. And if not, go play that game. It's awesome.

So, Groundchuck. A mutant steer cyborg? That's pretty awesome. But no steer has EVER been fire truck red, nor do they really ever make mesh shirts in bright blue. A purple horn? Cows don't have purple horns! And lavender straps? C'mon, guys. I understand that this was an era of brightly-colored toys, but let's go for some consistency, here.

I painted him a reddish-brown, painted the non-robot horn and all the straps and gloves black, and decided that blue just wasn't a good color to go with him, so I used the kinda drabby green. I gave all the metal and clothing a black wash, and put a dark brown wash over the fur, then painted some stuff with metallic paints, to really make them stand out. I liked his green mohawk, though, so I left that. I just made it brighter.

And now he looks like an actual mutant steer cyborg, instead of a cow-firetruck thing.

I agree. Turtles in Time Slash looked freaking great. But, no. My painting wasn't intentionally based on that version; I really just wanted to make the toy's paint look as cool as the sculpt.

The original TMNT figures are all pretty awesome, twisted, kind of dark, brooding designs (much like the original Eastman & Laird comics). But after the sculptors at Playmates came up with those awesome sculpts, the people who did paint applications made them all super bright and kind of painful to look at.

I understand that it's a children's line, and I'm by no means saying that my repaints are the way the character SHOULD look. I'm not trying to make the definitive version of any character or anything like that. I just want to make the toys look better than they already do.

If you dig my paint jobs, that's awesome. And if not, that's cool, too.

You guys are really great. Thank you for all of your compliments! It's really flattering that, based on two figures, you guys want to see my take on the entire Playmates line. That's awesome, I REALLY appreciate it, and am humbled.

I have two other TMNT figures in this style completely ready to go, and a handful of others on my customizing desk that are nearly complete. I'm intentionally (as of right now) not telling what my next figures are going to be (although I did let slip that the next figure will be the Rat King), just so A) nobody gets their hopes up and B) nobody starts ripping on my for my figure selection.

I also have a handful of other custom TMNT figures that are painted in a different style that I will also be sharing in the future.

But, yes. I have plenty of TMNT-line customs ready to go. But I'm not saying who is and isn't coming, or when. Be patient, and keep coming back every week, when I unveil a new figure. :)

And thank you all again for your kind words.

And now for my 3rd repainted TMNT '88 figure: The Rat King

The Rat King is a pretty weird guy. He's a guy who, for whatever reason (hooray for inconsistency between Turtleverses!), can't get along in normal society. And, as such, he has gone to live in the sewers. While there, he's declared himself the king of vermin. And now he's deluded himself into thinking that rats should rule the world, with him as their emperor.

People who live in the sewers are dirty. And while Playmates' original Rat King was pretty gross for a 1989 toy, he wasn't anywhere CLOSE to as gross as somebody who lives in the sewers should look. Not to mention that half of the weird stuff crawling all over him (including spiders, rats, and a centipede) was left unpainted.

So, I did my best to make ol' Rat King REALLY gross, because he's presumably lived in the sewers for years, and that likely means he hasn't done a very good job of washing himself.

Every bandana, every rat, every bug, and EVERY SINGLE STITCH is fully hand-painted. Painting all the critters and stuff on this guy was a serious pain in the neck. I only wish my camera was better (or that I knew anything about photography), and could pick up all the little details on him.

I love what youve done with groundchuck, the color scheme works much better, not being so neon. Rat kings cool, but the bright blue on the pants totally doesn't go with the other colors being used.

psychoandy

Stayunspoiled: I'll have to hunt down a Muckman & Joe Eyeball set. They do seem like they've got a lot of fun on there.

TMNT_Canadian: If I run across a Foot Soldier, I'll do something with 'em. I'm more interesting in working with the Movie Star version than the '88 sculpt in the gorilla pose, though. I think Zobovor pretty much nailed the Foot Soldier with his repaint from several years ago: http://members.fortunecity.com/zobovor/foot_soldier_repaint.html

RayH: Thanks for the kind words about Groundchuck. Unfortunately, with Rat King's pants, my digital camera totally overexposes any blue hues and makes them much brighter than they appear in real life (because it's so cheap, it came free with my printer). But my idea was that he just had regular jeans on when he went to live in the sewers. I suppose I could've made them a bit grungier, though... Ah well, live and learn, right?

CASEY JONES!

http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2010/207/6/0/TMNT___Casey_Jones_by_PsychoAndy.png

The look is heavily inspired by (but not based on!) the artwork found in Kevin Eastman and Simon Bisley's "BODYCOUNT" series. The bats, I'm pretty sure, came from Toy Biz WCW Sting figures. I found 'em in my accessories box and painted them up.

The original figure and a panel from Bodycount are in the corners.

Casey came out pretty decent, interesting twist on the character with the flag mask. Caseys blue jeans came out pretty nice this time, the color seems more turned down compared to rat king. Are you using a flash? if your having problems with colors translating to pictures, just use natural lighting from a lamp or something. I know I've had problems with color translations with photography and can relate.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate it! I always thought the idea of Casey with the Old Glory-style hockey mask was a cool twist, and one of the best things to come from the Image comics era of TMNT.

i was thinking of something like a TMNT Forever Utrom Foot Soldier. i'd love to see that.

That's an interesting idea, but I'm making no promises! I'm currently doing all of this just for my own enjoyment, but I'm posting them here (and on my deviantART account) because I thought other Turtles fans might like to see what I came up with. So if I run across a Foot Soldier, I might give the Utrom thing a try.

Yeah... The Utrom Foot Soldiers would require more than just repainting. Those would be full-on resculpts, which I'm not really interested in doing at this time.

I've been customizing for almost 15 years, and I've found that I really only get enjoyment out of the painting portion of customizing, which is why that's what I'm focusing on, currently.

Maybe someday, but likely not anytime soon.

It's amazing what a quality coloring job can do. Reminds me of Martinfly from The Fly II.

I absolutely love these repaints, primarily slash, fugitoid and wingnut.

However, I do have to say, bonafrog and baxter feel like zombie versions, heh

OMG those repaints are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!! i can't believe my eyes!!
The only criticism i could make is that Casey's mask looks a bit too overdetailed with the flag on, it looks as the flag kinda blurs the face, and Napoleon colors (specially the eyes) look a bit washed up/worned out for my taste.
Otherwise EXTREMELY AWESOME WORK! I ilike you did a silver fugitoid but keeping some details in gold that reminds of the original toy.

Could you show some pictures of Traag?

Out of curiosity, would there be any interest in seeing any of my non-TMNT custom toys, as well? Or is it against forum rules to post non-TMNT customs?

I'd say post them in the non-tmnt toy section.

Hey everybody! Sorry I disappeared for a while, there. I moved earlier this year, and haven't yet set up a place to photograph my figures like at my old place.

But in the mean time, I've been working on a bunch of new projects to share with you guys and gals. Here's a photo I took a little bit ago of all my TMNT customs to date!

http://psychoandy.com/toys/tmnt/shelf/tmntshelf_all.png

There is just so much epicness in that photo that I have no words to describe it.

I really need to learn this stuff, I always wanted to makes the turtles look more like the comic versions.

All of your vintage repaints are top notch! I love how grotesque a lot of the sculpts become with some added paint. That Casey Jones is definitely my favorite!

Andy, We have spoke via email about commissions in the past, what type of clear/sealer to you use on your repaints?

psychoandy
06-03-2012, 08:52 PM
Usually, I don't. I know that there's a large percentage of the customizing community who finds that opinion to be heresy, but I generally just put my customs up on a shelf, where the worst that'll happen to them is a bit of dust.

But I have a can of Krylon Matte finish for when I get a commission and the client really wants sealant.

I am repainting an extra Slash I have in a style to mimic your repaint ;)

Great! :tsmile: The paints that you used are resistant? Do not leave when passing a fingernail? Not stain with dirt? I bought some acrylic paints, but they bark. Not adhere to resistance.

I don't recommend playing with any of my toys after I paint them. They mostly just sit on shelves and look pretty.

They have survived a couple of times moving house, though.
