If there's one thing I don't like, it's getting an aimless gift like this. I got this pin for Christmas last year and even the giver had no freakin' idea what it meant. I looked it up on the official site which didn't help either. So, is anyone here able to translate this? I don't even know what language it is, which perplexes me why anyone thought this would be a great gift for me. Whatever.

looks like some generic lucky charm. The symbol looks like a Kanji
kanji are letter used by Japanese and Chinese and got around 5000 symbols

My girlfriend (who I ended up dating for like a year and a half) gave me an "I'm with stupid" shirt in the early stages of dating.... The day she gave it to me there was a pluming malfunction in the school and several toilets and urinals spewed nasty water all over the place. Of course I was pissing while this happened and ended up having to wear the "I'm with stupid" shirt the rest of the day.
Also, some family members get me sports stuff of teams that I don't even like. Both my grandmothers have bought me footballs or hats of The Bears or Mountaineers rival teams.

I seem to get lots of kitchen hand towels and socks with cute little animals frolicking on them. For a while I didn't have one pair of solid colored socks.

While I'm at it, other gifts I tend to dislike are seasonal ones. Having been to my great grandmothers every year as long as I can remember and watching her get a dozen Christmas tea towels every year along with various other seasonal stuff make me cringe. I mean. How many of those do her daughters expect her to use each year?

My main tiff about the pin I posted above is that I can't and won't wear it. For all I know, it could be something offensive. Okay, not likely, but you get my drift, aye?

It's Chinese, and it's the character for "Life." I assume it's a kind of charm, and it will give you a long life.

Thank you so much, Ai! Very helpful. <3
Admittedly, not something I'd have picked out for myself.

I can't say I find gifts annoying - pointless maybe, but the thought was there. I'm just glad to get something! I've got a rock sitting next to my computer right now, painted blue, with a googlie eye, a black marker smile and 'MGT' written on it. My friend gave it to me as a gift, MGT being his nickname for me. Totally pointless, but I dig the hell out of it!

My cousin got underwear for his birthday, poor guy!
I got fancy ballpens, which were pretty pointless. I don't care about pen as long as it has ink on it.

Anything edible that gets wrapped, is a huge dissapointment. I've got these wii games, this TMNT shirt, etc, oh, another package, OH... jelly beans... haha, yeah... neat... thanks...
Don't get me wrong, I'm a candy fiend, but please don't wrap it.

I have to agree with the no annoying gift comment. someone thought enough of you to get you something....be happy!
I got a dollar for my birthday....literally a dollar. from my grandma. My same grandma that got me a red sparkly feathery thong with a card that said "have a little fun from Vegas" (she lives in Vegas...) Not too many occasions to wear that thing....but still, she thought of me :)

I think what I find most annoying about the posts I've made about the gifts is because the people in question don't think the gifts through. The woman who bought this pin didn't even know what it meant! Seriously, I asked her and she told me I had to find out myself. I'd never get something for someone if I thought it wasn't suitable or I didn't understand what it was. I kind of expect the same in return.
Not everyone has the same thought process as you. If it really bothers you so much, ask them to not get you gifts at all.

I've gotten some annoying gifts. It's usually some kind of lame device I'll never use or some kind of food I don't eat. Example, I got a keyboard vacuum once for Christmas. It was a piece of crap and totally pointless. When I got it home I decided to try it and of course it didn't even work. The person who gave it to me did so out of obligation. They try to spend the same amount on everyone so they buy blanket gifts like that and give it to everyone along with something they want. If you have to make it even like that just give me money.
As for the food one family member always gives me stuff I liked when I was 5 years old. Now I'm allergic to some of the stuff, like the power bars with peanuts in them I got last year, so they go to waste. I feel like they wasted their money too.
I also feel weird when people I barely know give me gifts. Like my Step Dad's cousins I only met once gave me a bird feeder and some seed for Christmas one year. I looked shocked and they asked me "You don't hate birds do you?" Of course I said no and thanked them but what the hell was I going to do with a bird feeder? I felt like they just gave me something out of obligation. It's stupid.
Gift giving is meant to be a practice done from one loved one or friend to another, not strangers. You get someone a present that they really like or something that has meaning. You don't buy someone you don't know a gift out of obligation to a holiday. If you're going to do that then put it to better use and make a donation to some poor children on that person's behalf.

Funny how this thread is created now. Last Christmas was 6 months ago, and the next one is not until 6 months later.
