Yeah, there's lots of it, but you wouldn't be interested in most of it. The majority of vintage TMNT manga is nothing but adaptations of episodes of the Fred Wolf cartoon with pretty lousy art.
Here's a rundown of the various TMNT manga series (http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2010/03/confusing-history-of-tmnt-in-japan.html) as well as a history of the line in Japan (though you can just skip to the manga section if that's all you want to know about).
You can read the entire Mutant Turtles Gaiden series here (http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2009/05/tmnt-manga.html). It was a single volume, 4 chapter series of original content and its amusing, if anything. Art's pretty good and the story is a nice hybrid of light-hearted action and goofiness.
There's also a 3 volume Super Mutant Turtles series that's made up of original content. I intend to translate it, some day, but I'm waiting until I can get my hands on the first volume (Alex Winters owns volumes 2 and 3, and he provides me with the scans I need for translation, but neither of us can find Volume 1).
Anyway, hope that helps. Alex has lots of scans of the episode adaptation series if you'd like to see what that art looked like (but it isn't anything to write home about).

Well, Here's (http://www.flickr.com/photos/22047800@N07/sets/72157613377852732/) Alex's flickr page full of scans. If he has more, I'm sure he'll come along and link you to them.
You may want to read some of that article I linked you to since it gives a complete rundown of what was produced.
But to simplify it for you:
15 volumes adapted episodes of the cartoon (two episodes per volume, so 30 episodes total).
1 volume adapted TMNT III.
1 volume of Mutant Turtles Gaiden.
3 volumes of Super Mutant Turtles.
That's about the size of it. There were also fumeti style "comics" (photographs of toys with captions and panels) and "story page" collections (two page color spreads with narrative text, but not really comics).
But so far as manga goes, that's all there is. There were some comedy strips that were done in a newspaper comic style, but I can't find anymore info on where they were published or if they were ever collected, so I can't say much in their regards (Ninjaturtles.com has some scans of them in their manga section but no furhter info).

Yahoo Japan is the only auction site I've ever seen them appear on, and even then you're pretty much at the mercy of whether the sellers ship to America.
Some members of this site own copies and I know that's where Alex got a good chunk of his collection from, so you could ask around the buy/sell forum here and see if anybody is trying to unload some copies.
I, personally, don't own any. I had to get scans from Alex so I could translate and image edit them for my site.

There has never been any official translation or international release of any kind for any of the TMNT manga.
When I did my translation of Mutant Turtles Gaiden, I made sure to keep in contact with Mirage via Dan Berger, letting them know what I was doing and updating them when I completed new chapters. Berger liked my work and encouraged me to continue with the series, showing it to the other guys at the Mirage office.
So while my translations aren't officially sanctioned or anything, I at least got "permission" to do them, and by "permission" I mean "this is cool so we aren't going to have our lawyers send you a cease and desist notice".
Now that Viacom owns the Turtles, that "permission" likely doesn't still stand, but so long as their lawyers don't find out about it, I should be fine.

I'd be curious to see scans of the third movie issue if somebody ends up buying these. I've seen this set before on Yahoo! Japan Auctions and it looks like shipping will cost you pretty heavily. Still, you do get the Super Turtles #1 issue included (shameless plug for DrSpengler's translation project (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=804284&postcount=17)).
I recently picked up an extra set of TMNT manga in Chinese. I'm looking to sell them off, though I'm reluctant to mess with international shipping at this point.

Sure thing, the Chinese covers are pretty much rehashes of the Japanese originals, although sometimes the cool Chinese TMNT logo obscures the art.

That's really hard to say with items so rare as these books. It's very hard to find these things outside of Japan. I paid $15 a piece for the first two manga volumes I bought (thanks, Rose!). It looks like the seller wants $11.25 a piece for each one. The shipping rate from Japan sounds about right, since I paid about $20 in shipping for one issue a few months back (Air Mail, I think). I personally don't like to drop a ton of money on stuff that's being shipped from an overseas country because I have less confidence it will arrive, and if there is a problem I figure I'll have a harder time getting it resolved due to the language barrier.
I guess it's all up to how much you want these things.

Nah, my translations are staying up until I get a bitchsmack from Viacom's lawyers or something like that.
Even then, if that happens, I'll keep them saved to my harddrive so you can always PM me and I can e-mail em to you if worse comes to worse.
I'll try and get to the last quarter of Super Mutant Turtles Vol. 1 this weekend. After that, it might be a little while before I get to Vol. 2. Juding by the stats function on my blogger dashboard, NO ONE reads the things. My comic revies and especially my articles tend to get the most pagehits so I figure that's what the majority of my readers want to see.
The manga is more or less a personal project, considering the lack of interest. I intend to get the final two volumes done, though, but probably some time next year. I'll have Vol. 1 completed before the end of 2010, though. Promise.

Cool! And no problem, do it at your own pace. I want to read them, but like I said, I haven't really been reading them lately either. I got about...hmm...halfway into the one-volume one, and never came back to it yet. I love TMNT and I love manga both, but for some reason this one wasn't resonating with me. But, I'll work my way through it as a labor of love soon enough.

Judging by the stats function on my blogger dashboard, NO ONE reads the things. My comic reviews and especially my articles tend to get the most pagehits so I figure that's what the majority of my readers want to see.
On the one hand, I'm surprised the public revealing of the TMNT manga hasn't achieved the same sort of cult appreciation as that TMNT OVA review (http://www.scary-crayon.com/spectare/tmntova1/) that ScaryCrayon did a few years back.
Still, TMNT Black & White manga adaptations of a bizzare subsection of the franchise is a bit of a hard sell for the general public (although the Japanese TMNT section on my Flickrstream does get quite a few hits). I'm just surprised more TMNT fans haven't received it a bit more warmly since anybody who posts on this forum is pretty much head-deep into the weirdness that is the TMNT mythos.
I remember when you started up the translation for Mutant Turtles Gaiden, there were some complaints about the blogspot format. I think your setup works great for referencing pages and provides a chance for user comments and your own notations about specific linguistic/cultural references. Still, I can understand why some people might find it cumbersome to individually load each page post by post. You might consider creating an alternative repository where all the pages are more readily available for viewing.
Have you considered actual reviewing the issues once you finish translating them? It would be a nice way to cap off the translation and we'd actually get to hear your candid take on the story/art/concept/etc. It might be a good intro "drug" for getting people to actually go read the translations.
Anyway... you're my hero, Spengs! Keep it up!

Yeah, Volume 1 of Super Turtles is pretty basic, so I could see why you lost interest.
Bad guys find magic stones, get super powers. Good guys find magic stones, get super powers. They fight. Good guys prevail.
Volumes 2-3 seem to have a bit more meat to the plot. But my favorite is still the Mutant Turtles Gaiden issue for its reimagining of the TMNT story and its distinctive art style.

I've no problem with anyone taking my translations and uploading them to rapidshare or however that stuff works. I don't own them and never make any claims like that (if I was a colossal douche I'd slap ugly watermarks on the thing to feed my own ego, but I don't roll tha way).
So if anyone wants to spread them around, then go for it. At least that way, if Viacom does crack down on me in the future, they'll already be out there in other venues and possibly in places where Viacom will have a tougher time getting rid of them.
Apparently, as Adam showed me, some Russian fans have taken my translated pages and begun their OWN translation project.
Japanese to English to Russian? Gotta wonder how much is getting lost in the process.
And though few people read the translated manga I post, I'm surprised at how many people are interested in Japanese Ninja Turtles stuff. My History of the TMNT in Japan (http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2010/03/confusing-history-of-tmnt-in-japan.html) article gets at least a hundred pageviews a week.

Yeah, I definitely think people are curious about the TMNT's presence in Japan on a general level (likewise my Flickrstream), but few probably care enough to sit down and read a whole comic. Similarly, I'm guessing few people who read the ScaryCrayon review of the OVA have actually seen the anime all the way through.
At the end of the day, maybe people are just too lazy after all?
Gyt Kaliba
11-18-2010, 04:48 PM
I think for me it is that laziness, mixed with how many comics I read online as it is. I read the weekly chapters for a few other manga as they come out (I buy too though before anyone can thwack me for that :P), not to mention forum time, so finding time to make myself read a full thing (even short ones like this) are hard for me.
TMNT and Japan definitely interests me though. The idea is so Japanese to begin with, even beyond the ninja stuff. I mean...walking, bipedal turtles, fighting...that just sounds like something weird Japan would come up with to me LOL.

awesome. cool that u can read it. i just love looking at the pics
just wondering if you'd know anything about one book i got with a number 92 on the cover. maybe it's like an encyclopedia of some kind. i think i've seen another with 91 on the cover. it's 1992 Japanese TMNT Annual. i'm wondering if there's more

It's not an annual published in 1992, although that's what I first thought. "Encyclopedia" is a good description of it. It is one of a series of books in the Comic Bom Bom brand. The 92 probably stands for the issue number. Comic Bom Bom would dedicate an issue to a particular franchise and show off their stuff, TV episodes, video games, and sometimes include original comics. The TMNT got at least two volumes dedicated to their franchise (issues 91 and 92).

Amazon Japan is the best bet, although I wouldn't know exactly what keywords to search for. Try your contact guy who sold you the others, perhaps? I believe those issues came out in 1994.

Digging up old threads, digging up old threads :thyper:
So, is there a list or something of all the manga that were released since... well, the first one?
I was searching for some Batman manga like the Jiro Kuwata Batmanga when I though to myself "hey, why is nobody doing a list of everything japan as to offer in terms of TMNT?"
There's just blog post by Mark here: http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2010/03/confusing-history-of-tmnt-in-japan.html
But I think that's it.

Been trying to get one together for the Wiki but it's not super accessible to find everything. Turtles are a lot more niche than Batman (despite the former's rise to fame and all of the page - and now screen - time they've shared), so it's not a surprise there's less of an archive of the more obscure stuff.

If they wanted to we should probably do a somewhat more professional job with the art editing, I was a lot better at these by the end of them than I was at the start.
Probably someone else could do a much better job, really.

I have also updated all my scans to higher quality images! You worked some semi-miracles on some of the old 1-page spreads I sent you a decade ago!

Yeah, I don't even really know how I managed to pull off some of those spreads. The gutters still bug me though!
