View Full Version : Was Carter a pointless character?

It seemed like Carter was only there to show what happens to someone who goes through a new mutation. Otherwise he should have just been a one-shot, not in 10 eps in a row or whatever it was.
Was Carter a pointless character?
Duh. He was a desperate change of the status quo. That's all.

Carter became the new April of sorts. Maybe the powers felt that a male supporting character would help young boys better relate or show interest as opposed to a damsel in distress. To me it makes sense, darker tone, more masculinity, a human male character who wasn't as much of a pretentious loser (Zach) for kids to enjoy. I personally never liked him though. As you said, he didn't offer anything other then the process of a human mutating. That would've made more sense had the toyline coincided with the show but since it didn't, it was basically pointless.

Yeah, that makes sense. But they really should have given us Keno if they wanted to go that route (with or without mutant powers). Considering how they explicitly associated the new seasons with the live action movies in the revamped theme song, it would have made a lot of sense.

I was never a fan of the Red Sky seasons at all (except the first seasons, when Shredder and Krang are still main enemies). I hate how the TMNt could mutate.

Is he named after Jimmy Carter? By 1995, 1970's nostalgia had begun to kick in.

I was thinking the same exact thing... I kinda wish they did use Zach as I always liked the character... He was pretty much the turtles Jimmy Olsen

Carter was such an irritating deus ex machina. Most of the time, even after they mutated, the Turtles were helpless until Carter showed up.

what.

I never liked the Red Sky seasons either because when the Turtles mutated, they just looked ugly. Carter wasn't a great character at all and showed no potential from what I remember of him.

Jimmy Carter was the president of the USA between 1977-1981.
Why the hell would you think he was based on Jimmy Carter? Was Splinter based on a piece of wood? Was April based on a month of the year?

I said named after Jimmy Carter, not based on him. Maybe Carter is a common last name in the USA.
April is not based on a month, but her ancestor May East is probably, see http://www.ninjaturtles.com/comics/archie/miniseries/april02/01/01.htm

It's not exactly common, but it isn't rare or anything. I mean, it's not as common on Smith or Jones or Johnson.

So, in his childhood, Carter and several other orphans were found by an old nomad who gathered them up in an old coffee can and with a history book gave them all names? Is that what you're getting at?

And their names were Nixon, Ford, Carter and Reagan.

OK. I live in Sweden, so I don't know everything about names in the USA. But when I think of it, I recall Carlene Carter who sang "Every Little Thing".
I think it's more likely that he was named after Lynda myself. :D

I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who thinks Carter wasn't pointless... but that's just me.

Carter was a pointless charcter and so were the Turtles new mutations, making Season 9 the worst one of the 1987 series.

Season 9 storywise is pretty much on par with everything else, (David Wise wrote all of it), and the mutations aren't even that bothersome.
Was Carter supposed to be black?

Maybe... or maybe not... but, I'm stull disappointed he never showed up on Jackie Chan Adventures. :tgrumble: ...him or Owen Wilson.
