Maybe some of the people will agree with you, but I for one love the old toon for what it was. Watching it today, I realize what it was trying to be, a bizarre, goofy superhero show for kids that didn't take itself too seriously and wasn't concerned about being overly faithful to it's source material. Do I now, as an adult, prefer the 2K3 series? Kinda. But that's only because I've discovered the original Mirage comics and my sensibilities have changed. Now I prefer a darker, more violent take on the Turtles. But I still love the OT, and I know that alot of people here don't share the same sensibilities I have and prefer a lighter, more sillier take on the Turtles. It's like the old Adam West Batman show and The Dark Knight. Some people prefer camp over drama.

I love the OT because it's a good series. There's some actual funny dialogue, the voice acting is awesome, there are some great episodes, and it has spawned some cool characters.
Nostalgia only allows me to excuse the animation errors, voice subs, and some of the bad episodes. It holds up. I've seen kids who are my age when I first watched turtles watching it and they love it too. It's just that kind of series.

Sorry my friend Mutated Turtle! ...But I´m not agree with you this time...
You dont need necessarily nostalgia for like something a lot....a good nice example for me : Cartoons...It is not an "age cuestion"...you like them or not...and when you are getting older you still like them or not....
I love many Cartoons, old and new ones!

While I'm sure that may be the case with many people, I don't think it's the case with everyone, especially here where people are pretty diehard TMNT fans. For me, though, I'd say it does hold true (or did, or whatever). I loved the OT as a child, but in all honesty, when I got older and looked back on it, I started noticing things about it that bugged me. I had always known that there was a comic, though, and when I eventually got to read it, I became a Turtle fan all over again (and was pleasantly surprised at all the parallels with the first movie, which at that point in time was my favorite version of the TMNT). This is just how it was for me, though.

I'm going to have to disagree with this topic completely.
Its true that most cartoons don't stand up too well over time, but Ninja Turtles in not one of them. The show is still great because of the great voice acting, writing and animation.
In fact, a few years ago when I started getting back into old shows (I stopped watching tv because of all the reality tv) I was disappointed in almost all the cartoons I tried watching that I had liked as a kid. This was not one of them. I was surprised at how good the show still was.
You want bad, try rewatching transformers of gi joe. Or how about he-man. Those are some bad shows.

Bold statement there, kiddo.
I rarely got to watch TMNT as a kid for some reason, I guess it aired when I was still in school or something. Didn't really watch it much though, my love for the turtles came from playing with the toys and creating my own stories. So when the DVDs came out I was able to watch the show mostly nostalgia free and ended up really enjoying it, much more than I thought I would. I also know how to distinguish if I like something because of nostalgia or not, I don't see a reason to be a shamed of nostalgia when something is genuinely only good because of nostalgia I'll admit it.
What makes the OT still as watchable today unlike most 80s cartoons and early 90s ones is that the show does not take itself too seriously, it knows its out there and embraces it, unlike say He-Man that while it has comedy it tries to be serious.
I wasn't born in that era, I was born with the 2k3. And I very much dislike 2k3 and adore the old toon. So no nastalgia involved in my love.

What's wrong with you? You pop up like twice a month just to be a total dickhead. I can't wait for summer vacation to end so you can finally start middle school.

Powder don't be so mean, he is only ten. And he is just stating an observation he has learned through most likely experience. My brother loves the old toon, but he doesn't know squat for the most part. Most people who aren't die hard fans most likely like the show mostly do to nostalgia. So Pipsqueak isn't completely off with his thinking.
Is it bad to love something for being nostalgic? No. Is it bad non die hard fans don't know that Mikey has nun-chucks? No. Can't we all just get along? We all love the same mutant turtles. <3

And, for the record, I love OT seasons 1-3. I hope Nick's new show is like what The Brave and the Bold is to Superfriends.
I never claimed to like the OT. The first five eps I liked, but not even that much. Then, it caught on like wildfire, and I stuck with it just so I'd know what the shell my friends and other people were talking about.

The reason we love the old toon is the wacky plots, silly humor, and the overall self-parody nature of it.
The original cartoon literally made fun of itself. It was a fun comedy series, nothing more.

The classic ninja turtles cartoon just happened to strike a chord with me, I like the action and comedy elements and the main characters, who they are and the way they act just happen to appeal to my liking. From what I deduce, to like something for nostalgia means to like something cause it brings you back to some period of time. Personally I don't care what period of time it's from, I believe every era has it's share of worthy and non-worthy memories, and though I was born in that era, there's a lot of memories from that era I grew up in I find very forgettable, non-enjoyable, and could do very well without, TMNT didn't happen to be one of them.

While I don't agree that everyone who likes the OS now only likes it because of nostalgia, I do believe that a good percentage of the people that are hardcore OS fans... well, if they'd never seen it before and were just shown it now for the first time as a grown adult, would find it not to be their cup of tea.

Good. I thought that was like your desktop wallpaper or something. :P
I don't necessarily think people want to watch the show because of nostalgia. I NEVER watched a single episode when I was a kid. Up until a few years ago I had acquired the first 6 seasons (and a little help from YouTube vids). Yes, I could have been critical about it and say the animation is off, some things don't make sense, but you know what? I kept watching it because I wanted to. It didn't matter what the logistics were to the show, I watched it because I enjoyed it, I laughed a lot ( which is hard to do compared to cartoons now-a-days (*cough* Spongebob *cough*).
Also look at it this way. You must be familiar with the cartoon Tom and Jerry (I'm sure everyone is). That cartoon came out in the fifties! Given it is hilarious, I don't watch it for nostalgic purposes, I watch it mainly because the music is awesome. I've read the score to one of the cartoons and it's ridiculous. (I sort of watch it out of envy you might say)
Anyway, back to the topic, I watched a lot of Power Rangers when I was a kid. Do I watch them now? No. Will I watch them in the future? Probably not. Also, you must consider that the OT stuff that is being sold at Hot Topic isn't necessarily because they're awesome, but it's because it's "retro." It's cool because it's "retro." Turtles were cool back then, and it makes a lot of people happy. They may feel a little nostalgic, but I wouldn't say they hated the cartoon (I'm sure they prefer the turtles as a 'symbol' of their childhood, and not a scar)

Agree with Powder on this point... These are the people who only like it because of nostalgia... They get the shirt or belt buckle because it's 80's or whatever...
Most people here though aren't even like that... I don't think you sign up to be a member on a forum like this and talk about TMNT all the time because of nostalgia...

I enjoy the classic TMNT series for both nostalgia AND because it's honestly a fun and fantastic series.
There's a reason why TMNT was the biggest thing on the planet in the late 80s and early 90s. It was just that good!
It still blows many cartoons these days out of the water.

I believe the OP is rather off based.
The 1987 cartoon is very entertaining stacked up to other cartoons produced before and since it's 10 year run. There was a lot of episodes and not all of them were winners and in my opinion only the first 5 are truly fantastic but a good fair share of that sizable episode count had great entertainment value. Sure the pop-culture humor is dated now but that doesn't stop people from still loving the crap out of Animaniacs and such. And to it's credit while it wasn't great as an action show it did have some good action. So I'd say its much more than just a good comedy. It's a good action comedy with a bit more emphasis on the comedy. The TMNT comics were parody from the beginning and the 80s cartoon kicked that up several notches and made a point of making breaking the forth wall and art form.
It is without a doubt, a cartoon worth watching. It's just maybe not worth watching every episode (at least more than once).
I personally dislike when people say they only like the OT (mostly because they've never seen the comics) and dismiss the 2003 cartoon without a second thought but that doesn't mean the old cartoon wasn't great. If it wasn't, how many of us would be here? Comics were big, the 2003 cartoon was bigger, the movies even bigger but the 80s cartoon was where this franchise became a phenomenon.
What doesn't hold up so well is the animation. Its pretty dang cheap looking most of the time and rarely consistent. That annoys me to this day but not enough for me to never watch the show again. I've got all the DVDs, when ever the turtle mood strikes me I pop one in.

Having not read many Mirage comics personally I don't have that much of an opinion on them. They're good reads but probably not my personal favorite versions of these characters.
I like something a bit inbetween like the 2003 cartoon and the first and fourth movies.

Definitely agree; I wouldn't watch the OT if I didn't still enjoy it, nostalgia or not. The show holds up because it was quality writing and performing. It could have ended up just a regular "kiddie show," but they always went one step beyond with the witty dialogue and adult references. It was truly sophisticated humor, compared to most of today's cartoons that just pretend to be grown up but have no idea what that means.

It's fine for what it is. It's campy and self-mocking. It gets young kids into Ninja Turtles even today when they see it on YouTube or wherever. It serves a purpose and never claimed to be the definitive TMNT. The fact that a few people who only know of that version think it's the "real" TMNT doesn't make it abhorrent.
My wrestling character is an 80s throwback, so when I scrape a few bucks I'm going to Hot Topic for an 80s TMNT toon shirt so I can stick the graphic on the back of my denim vest. Gotta show love for what got me into TMNT in the first place!

She wasn't annoying. She just had alot of passion and drive in what she did, which made her the top reporter. Kinda like Leo with ninjutsu. They're just very dedicated in their profession.
Dispite being the damsal in distress so often, April was a tough and independent woman in the classic series.

In my opinion, she was a lot of distraction in some cases. The Turtles sometimes came to a scenario where they were torn (save April or stop the villain)...eventually they did both, but her being stuck in those scenarios can be a real inconvenience....but she's still hot though!

Agreed with OP. I loved the original cartoon and thought it was awesome and watched it over and over again when I was 10.
What makes it painful to watch nowadays is the art actually. But that might be because I've been spoiled by very good animation now combined with the fact that I'm an artist myself.
As for the dialogue... um. Yeah, there are a couple good one liners that still have me in stitches and a bunch of really bad puns.
Do any of us actually enjoy bad puns as adults? Really?

Um, yes actually. Puns are a very high form of humor. Shakespeare used them all the time. Classic comedians like the Marx Brothers (and their writers, some who wrote for Broadway) were experts at it. Puns are not easy to create. You have to be a wordsmith (again, Shakespeare) and have a strong and creative command of the English language.
People write the OT off as childish, but humor is not an easy thing to create. It's much more difficult than the angst associated with "darker" cartoons.

I'm a little surprised at all the hostility in this thread. I don't entirely agree with the things stated in the opening post, but I can see where the topic creator is coming from. I've MET a lot of the people he's referring to. None of them here, of course, since this place is, as someone earlier stated, the HQ of diehard Turtle fans, but certainly, I don't think the TC deserves so much hostility.
Of course, it could just be that I'm saying this because I, for one, don't like the old cartoon anywhere near as much as I did when I was a child (though still enough to buy the DVD sets out of nostalgia), so to an extent, the TC's words sort of do describe me. Like I said, I ended up liking the old cartoon less when I was in high school and saw it again for the first time in ages, but then it also led me on a crusade to find the original comics, which to this day I like the most. Though, it's different strokes for different folks.
I guess maybe the hostility here is because the TC is generalizing and, worst of all, he's generalizing people on THIS BOARD, of all places? I still wouldn't be quick to dismiss his claims, though. Maybe I'd disclaim who he's aiming them at, but I think he brings up a good point of what the "average" TMNT fan is like. I'd say this would still go beyond the Hot Topic people that someone mentioned earlier, and extend to most people that saw the show as a kid but obviously don't keep up with the TMNT like the people on this board.
As for myself, while I don't really enjoy the old cartoon that much anymore, there are still a lot of things about it (concepts, if you will, regardless of execution) that I enjoy. These things would be the Technodrome, Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang. And I do want to state that I do love comedy, as well, but I never really thought the old cartoon was funny save for Raphael's one-liners. Raphael was a pretty likable character in that show, though ironically quite different from any other iteration of the character.

Tell? Did I say that EVERYONE who likes the OT likes it because of nostalgia?Nope. I know people who do only like it because of nostalgia. But whatever.
SERIOUSLY. I'm sure the majority of people who say that they "like" the OT,only like it because of nostalga.
If that's the case then explain yourself better next time. I know I came of as hostile but I just don't see the purpose of this thread, and even if someone likes it because of nostalgia then SO WHAT? And you said "MAJORITY" of people, not the "MAJORITY OF PEOPLE YOU KNOW".

Actually, when people find out how much I like the Turtles they think im cool. Strange huh?
Except for my GF.
Yes, thats strange...at least over here. When I was younger and had a TMNT shirt on, people laughed about me and made fun of me. Maybe they think the turtles are only for kids, I already was a teen.
So I dont wear these shirts in the open anymore.
Allowing honest debate and discussion without resorting to personal attacks is the sign of an open mind. Discussing the subject of nostalgia should not be something to cause banning.
It would disappointment me if one of the most popular TMNT boards on the internet did not allow reasoned debate.
Where do you see a discussion in the first post in this thread?
"SERIOUSLY. I'm sure the majority of people who say that they "like" the OT,only like it because of nostalga."
Its a statement and this WITHOUT even an explanation. A discussion looks different to me.
Additionally, when somebody tells ME "you dont like the OT" like its stated in the title of this thread, then its also somewhat a personal attack, isnt it? Sorry, but something like this is a no go.

I have to totally agree with you Leonardo. I too was rather put off by the thread title and blunt statement made within by the thread starter.

"SERIOUSLY" you're a douche.
"SERIOUSLY" I disagree
"SERIOUSLY" it'll always be better than the modern series by miles.

Leo was completely right on this one. I tried to think of an argument and be devil's advocate, but I couldn't.
In a discussion, you state your point, why you have that point and (if you think there is a reason to worry) why you think that is important.
He did state his feelings, but he worded it like a generalization. He never said why he felt that way. He never said why he felt that it needed to be addressed in the first place (as someone said before "so what?). Even the most rude of comments can be taken seriously if you have a reason for it.
Last but not least, he didn't really leave it open for other people to comment. It was written in a very "this is what I think, deal with it" sort of way.
In summary, He didn't really have an argument to discuss in the first place. He probably didn't mean to be a jerk (though his intent is very questionable), but you have to think things through before you post them. Everyone makes a mistake. Let's just make sure he learns from it, okay?

Exactly, Oniri *thumbs up*
IF he would have wanted it to be a discussion, he could have asked for our opinion for example.
Lets say: "I know people who only like the OT because of nostalga. What do you think of this?" <----DISCUSSION IS OPENED!

If that were the case, I know lots of people who say that they liked it when they were kids and they might own a shirt or two. I've also seen a lot of teenagers and kids just starting college who wear Turtles shirts (or have backpacks or whatever) all for the sake of being "retro" and have never watched anything Turtles related 'cept for maybe a YouTube clip of the Vanilla Ice scene from SotO. Even then I'm pretty sure those kids weren't old enough to really know who Vanilla Ice was. :tlol:
It doesn't really bother me, though. It's just the way of the world.

This is for Mutated Turtle, listen carefully.
1-NEVER EVER EVER start a thread telling someone what they like or don't like, this will cause a ridiculous backlash that will not only burn you but make you look spiteful pretentious.
2-NEVER EVER EVER start a thread with such a negative generalized statement that really has no base. That hinders actual discussion and makes you look hostile.
I thought you were bashing people for liking the OT, but in reality you were just stating something that a lot of people here knew, which is cool, cuz I agree that there are a ;lot of phonies out theree. But I think a lot of people including myself were a bit confused by it. Hope this was helpful :D.
Why do I love the OT? Is it nostalgia? Nah, it's totally this guy:

Dude. I need to look up a lot more Rob Paulsen. I don't know where half of those pics came from.
Love to the person who made this!
This thread is pretty trashed now. Is a mod going to lock it?

1.I wasn't.Title refers to the people who do only like the OT because of nostalgia, not every person.
2.it wasn't generalization, but the majority of people I've met like the OT only because of nostalgia.

We certainly do, but that's not what this thread is. It's just an unclear post that looks an awful lot like an incorrectly placed accusation followed by people proving it wrong (by the way, I also still enjoy the OT to this day because it's a fun and enjoyable show, not because of nostalgia).
Even so, the topic has shifted to be more about the OP's reasoning for posting this thread, so it seems that this thread has run its course. I fully agree with those who said that if the OP started things out by simply asking for people's opinions, it would have led to much better discussion than what we ended up with.
