View Full Version : Do you think Nick will buy the OT?
I remember reading when Nick bought the turtles that they "were looking into" buying the OT as well. Now that was just a comment when asked about the OT I think. Do you think it could actually happen?
On one hand its an old show that finished its run long ago, it doesn't have much profitability likely besides media releases. Then again they did buy the 2k3 show which also finished its run and wasn't a show that set the world on fire, it IS more recent though. With them airing Turtles Forever which includes a team up of a team of turtles they can't re-run who knows, especially if the 2k3 show proves to give them decent ratings, then again Nick also has a big catalog of classic shows they refuse to air. It would be nice to have everything under one roof. Well It'd be missing The Next Mutation but Disney doesn't like to sell and I really doubt Nick would try to try to buy it, theres also the movies which basically have 0 chance of them getting the rights.

Who's Nick? Some REALLY crazy fanboy? He'd have to be crazy, and wealthy to buy the whole TMNT franchize. Like, WOW! :o

Anyway, I sort of hope they do get ahold of it. Then maybe they would have a Turtletoon block!

I hope so. They can air it as part of a classic block. It is a hilarious show after all.

An article announcing the buyout had said that Viacom was looking to buy that series too. But, that could likely have been a case of miscommunication. Hardly unprecedented...

Well, it's nearly 200 episodes of nostalgic material that, so far, has been completely unavailable on streaming platforms. Easy way to gain some Paramount+ subs.

It made sense, it's the only global cultural hit the TMNT have ever gotten. Turtlemania was gigantic and now they Viacom owns it. As much as I hate that the 87 Cartoon is always going to be in every incarnation, I'm happy that the show is with them as lionsgate never did anything with the show.
Perhaps they'll even think of making a new season or a direct to TV movie.

I'm really surprised Lionsgate/Fred Wolf sold the rights? I guess they felt they made as much money off the DVDs as possible.

I mean they could have done that any time even before owning the show. They brought all the VA's back for the Nick crossovers already. They could have done an animated movie around then too but didn't.
Now I fear one of the old VA's might die so if that happens like Kevin Conroy there would be no point in revisiting it.

A waste of money in my opinion.
Firstly they own all the characters and likenesses of the '87 TMNT to use in all their merchandise, action figures, comics and video games which they have been doing since they bought the IP. If they wanted to they could make a follow up with all of voice actors...I mean they done that with all the various crossovers between the 2012 and '87 shows.
Secondly I don't agree that this is the only popular version out there. It wasn't even the only popular version while the show was airing. Pound for pound the 1990 movie was just as important to the success of the franchise. Think of all of the elements that are considered intrinsic to TMNT such as Casey Jones being a central character, Raphael being the angry loner, the idea of the the turtles being brothers and Splinter their father among other things. None of these things were part of the Fred Wolf show but had their genesis in the Mirage comics and popularised by the movie. Heck, we've just had everyone whining about April no longer being a red head and that was something that was started by the movie. It shows to me that the movie leaves just as much (if not more) of a cultural foot print the animated series.
The 2003 series was a ratings hit for most of it's run and for two years running had the #1 toyline for two years running as well as quite a slew of other merchandise. It may not have been Turtlemania but it was a substantial hit. The 2012 series was also a fairly big hit and both were quite distinct from the 80s show.
Maybe they can do another re-release of the DVDs but I imagine who most people whe are inclined to buy the full series in that format already do. Stick on of their streaming services or even air on their traditional tv channel but I doubt there is much money to be made in that. They fixation with trying to recreate the 80s show cost them a lot with the last movie and possibly even the upcoming and yet they still seem intent on pushing this as the only version with everything else as an afterthought.

I don’t have all the DVDs so this means they’ll probably do their own collection. Hopefully in HD.

They can literally get money indefinitely by always having it up for purchase on any streaming site, licensing it out to other companies to air, airing on TV, potential new DVD releases, etc.
Plus it's good to have all the TMNT cartoons owned under one roof. The only thing they don't own is Next Mutation but I guess they don't care much.

Hasbro owns The Next Mutation, who knows if they'd sell it but since it's not one of their to brands, they are not going to promote the competition so TNM is never going to be on a streaming platform ever again or released on any media. Not looking good TNM bros.
Fredwolf clearly didn't care about the TMNT, they mostly seemed to care to license it as if it was an old whore they could just send to get money from time to time. They kept relesing the same 12 episodes per disc in their box sets. Even without a remaster if the new reruns/streaming episodes are just normal quality they'll look better. I'm not sure how much they paid for it but likely viacom didn't pay too much for it but I'm sure it's a substantial amount as well. How much did 4Kids get for the 2003 show? They probably got a similar figure, I do remember that 4kids also had merchandising rights which is what they bought so that was probably the main reason viacom even bought 2003 not so much the show but the merch rights.
I'm guessing this includes rights to the theme song, that alone probably made it worth it for viacom counting how iconic it is. we'll know for sure if they start using the theme song later, or imagine a patch where Shredder's Revenge and cowabunga collection can now use the song!
we also don't know when this deal was made, perhaps the reason idw could make the saturday morning adventures was because of this deal getting done. At the end of the day I guess viacom saw that all the merchandise that was being sold was based on the original show so they wanted to own it. I don't think it's out of the question that we could get a new season, I mean if 90s X-Men got it after being a popular stream on Disney+ then perhaps this could too. I'm not counting on it but I feel it's more likely now than it's ever been.
*----------------------
2003/2012 were barely popular, they had relevance like 2-3 years but nowhere a worldwide phenomenom like the 87 show. Yeah it could've been done before but it was an awkward situation, "inspired by the original show" or whatever now it can be an official sequel. Nick has seen when it comes to merchandise new kids aren't getting into the turtles as they'd hope but boomers buy the old cartoon stuff like candy. I'm sure these all factored into the decision. They didn't just do it for reruns or to stream it exclusively.
Years ago I would've never said a new show was likely but yeah now shows are revived as long as there's nostalgia so I can see it happening. I'm not saying it will just that it's more likely than it's ever been. The show had a nice ending so I wouldn't like to have that messed up so I'm ok if nothing ever happens but i'd also be ok if it did.
I fully agree with this.
Plus Nick might as well spend money and buy the rights to Garfield and Friends, The Garfield Show, and those live action movies with them owning the rights to his future. Garfield and Friends on Paramount + is a no brainer.
Still amazes me that they're doing absolutely nothing with Garfield.
Garfield was an odd acquisition, I guess Jim Davis was just interested in selling and viacom threw a number and he said yes. There's a new movie coming out soon but that was a licensing deal before they bought garfield. perhaps they're waiting for that to air to see what they do. Do people even care about garfield?
The comics are more of a meme online, you had 80s kids that liked the specials and 90s kids that liked G&Friends but the new garfield show didnt seem particularly popular despite getting a few seasons.
Garfield doesn't really need a cartoon though, his merchandise just sells for whatever reason.

I doubt we'll get any new animation for the series (especially with the aging voice actors), but it's nice to have everything owned by the same company.
Also if some other company buys TMNT from Nick sometime in the far future, they'll get everything in one bundle which is good rather than having things fall into licensing rights with other companies.

From my understanding, WB owns the rights to the 90s films (since WB bought Cinema Line), TMNT, and Batman vs TMNT so those are some things Nick doesn't own from the property. In fact, they released all 5 of these as part of their 100th anniversary DVD lineup.

I wonder if their plan is to use this version of TMNT (1987) as the featured TMNT product/series/etc. moving forward after Mutant Mayhem hype fizzles out. Didn't they say that they were going to start showing it next year?
If that is the case - and there isn't a new animated series in the works - will this version of TMNT be what they put out there and support for years to come? Will Playmates make new figures/toys/merch from this version of the cartoon to support it?
If so, do we think that it would have the same impact it had in the past, or is it's style so consigned to the 80s that it doesn't really take off?
I guess what I'm really asking is, is Nickelodeon's intention to re-introduce 87 Turtles to the world, or to give us old shellheads something to chew on between newer projects?

Hopefully now they can put the entire series on HD Blu Ray. Also if they re-release DVDs again or Blu Ray, maybe now they can use the actual old school artwork from the VHS, or does FHE own that artwork? Would be cool to see it re-used. It also says Playmates Toys on the back of the VHS. Wonder who owns the old VHS artwork.
So the first 2 DVDs of the OT Volumes 1 and 2 were by FHE, then volume 3 and on was Lionsgate. Is this why they couldn’t use the actual theme song on the first Arcade1up and Cowabunga Collection, because Lions Gate wouldn’t allow it?
I haven’t got Cowabunga Collection yet but hopefully they can restore the original theme song into the arcade game now that they have the rights. But then the NES version still can’t have the Pizza Hut logo? Or maybe they can use it now that they bought the OT? So confusing.

I think the main reason they did it was for... Cohesion? I guess? Nickelodeon has done a lot of merchandising around this show and it might a bit awkward if they couldn't distribute the show itself. If they believe it will be a ratings/subscriber draw, that might be true but I doubt it's going to be in the long run.
As for the potential of them essentially making season 11 and/or specials, maybe but I think even they understand that making season 11 of a children's show that ended 27 years ago is a bad idea when they could just endlessly reboot.
Seems a bit more likely they'll make something like SGCTC than a continuation.

Reviving FW TMNT is as inevitable as it gets.

And what did both shows end with? Crossovers with the FW TMNT. Hell 2012 basically became nothing more than a dumping ground for FW TMNT concepts when it ran out of it's own ideas (which was very quickly)
And when you think of TMNT 2003, you think of four seasons and one 'lost' one, not the last three years of the show which were just as campy, gimmicky and lightweight as FW was at it's peak.

Barry Gordon (Donatello's OT voice actor, as well as Bebop's), is 74 years old. He's the oldest of the original TMNT cast. I doubt they're going to do anything new with them (besides maybe another one-off special or crossover?) because once one of the original cast dies there's no point in doing this. And I doubt the other 3 VA's would want to voice an OT thing if one of them passes away.

The '87 series, at least in the US, last aired on USA Network, I think until '96 or '97. It also aired Saturdays on CBS until '96 with limited reruns. The reruns on USA Network had about a minute of cuts per episode for time (which was common with reruns on cable networks at the time for some reason). Season 1 to 3 haven't been run without these edits since it was in syndication in '93. The Europe Vacation episodes have never aired uncut in the US, as they premiered as "new episodes" on USA Network in 1993.

USA Cartoon Express aired TMNT(1987) until Labor Day 1997 at the same time the Red Sky episodes which CBS was repeating on Saturdays were pulled. Interestingly some broadcast affiliates such as mine did not air the Shredder and Krang 3 episode arc. USA if memory serves only aired up to Name That Tune, the last syndication episode before jumping to CBS Saturdays one hour block. It also aired the European vacation episodes.

USA did air CBS seasons 4 - 6. I had recorded over my original airings, and was able to re-record them (although edited) through the USA airings (ah, the days before season set releases). They eventually aired season 7 CBS eps as well, but not until close to the end of their run.

Either way, it's been well over 20 years now. The 1987 series returning to syndication has been long overdue, when you consider that so many other Saturday Morning Cartoon shows have seen syndicated reruns more recently than the 90's.
Canada had it a bit better. Reruns were shown on the Canadian-exclusive Teletoon Retro, until the channel shut down in 2015, I believe.

The last time it aired in Canada was on the defunct Teletoon Retro. But just like Real Ghostbusters, they would only air up to the first 26 episodes, or The Fifth Turtles, JUST inching out the awesome Enter The Rat King. But they did air Raphael Knocks 'Em Dead at least once.

Well now that we know that Mutant Mayhem is the next cartoon series I guess that kills any speculation of the original cartoon getting a "revival." Nick wouldn't want two different TMNT cartoons competing against each other at the same time.
We already knew they were making a cartoon of the movie for more than a year though. They specifically mentioned the movie would launch a new cartoon series. And a sequel is a no brainer if it's successful. Around that same time they also announced the unrelated non-canon to Mutant Mayhem Villain origin stories, and they were re-confirmed like 2 months ago again.
The new news is them acquiring the 1987 show, so yeah I think a season 11 is fair game. Especially since the audiences are different. Boomers are going to watch the 1987 revival and kids are going to watch the mutant mayhem cartoon.

Most famous example I can think of was DiC doing two Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons at the same time in 1993 (one for syndication and one on Saturdays).
But a more comparable situation to what's being suggested here is what Netflix recently did with Masters of the Universe, where they made one show that was a brand new CGI reboot, and another that was a direct continuation of the Filmation cartoon, both premiering in 2021.

The new news is them acquiring the 1987 show, so yeah I think a season 11 is fair game. Especially since the audiences are different. Boomers are going to watch the 1987 revival and kids are going to watch the mutant mayhem cartoon.
As long as they ditch the red sky from the last three seasons, I would be all for a revival of the 1987 series. The crossovers they had with the 2012 series showed potential.

The iTunes version is definitely the best picture quality for 1987 TMNT. I got the first 3 seasons on iTunes, only because the pic quality was so great and I could easily take nice clear screenshots, but after a while Apple has blocked that feature, now if you try to screenshot something on iTunes it just gives a blank screen. Now I gotta take actual pics of the TV screen.
The DVD quality is pretty good too, but not as clear/sharp as the iTunes. There’s some noticeable lines on some of the discs. I hooked up an old VCR the other day and put an old TMNT VHS in, the colors just looked more rich and vibrant than the DVDs. I wish Apple would remove the screenshot block cause the picture quality on there was near perfect.

Unfortunately, that seems to have become a universal standard for any streaming platform these days.
I recommend the FireShot (free version) browser extension for taking snapshots. Not sure about iTunes compatibility but it seems to work for VUDU and AmazonVideo.

Who else watched the episodes when they aired tonight/this morning? I tuned in, and it seems that all the original music was, indeed, intact.
That was the first time in quite a while that I've actually tuned in to watch something on Nicktoons. The channel improved itself just by adding this show. I wonder if Garfield and Friends will follow suit, now that Nick is also getting a new Garfield series.

I was hanging out with a friend this evening and we tuned in. It’s wild to see it back on TV for the first time since 1997.
No time cuts, no dialogue edits, original theme recordings and the video quality was better than the YouTube upload. It was beautiful.
If you guys have Nicktoons then tune in or at least DVR it and watch the next day so Viacom doesn’t end this immediately. Currently it’s only scheduled for this week and there’s a marathon on Friday late-night/Saturday morning.

The Totally Turtles channel is already making some odd choices. Today they are showing season 2 episodes but skipped “Incredible Shrinking Turtles” and running “Turtle Tracks” from season 1 in place of “The Case of the Killer Pizzas”. So they moved on to a different batch of episodes from yesterday but are still showing “Return of the Shredder” and “Turtle Tracks”. Yesterday’s batch was 1-7 and today’s is 6, 8, 9, 10, 1, 12 and 13. So they’re playing all of the Eye of Sarnath saga except the episode that kicks it off.

There's an hour on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
A marathon on Friday from 12am-5:45AM
And an hour on Saturday and Sunday
Most of season 2 airs but the listings don't show "The Case of the Killer Pizzas","Splinter No More" and "The Catwoman from Channel Six" and when they get to season 3 they skip "Turtles on Trial", "The Maltese Hamster", "Sky Turtles", "The Old Switcheroo" and "The Fifth Turtle" for whatever reason.
So they air all of season 1, most of season 2 and some of season 3 but nothing is scheduled beyond Sunday. Here's hoping this does well enough that Nicktoons keeps it around longer and they get around to airing those episodes they skipped.

Yes the YouTube upload edits together the first five episodes (poorly upscaled) and trims out some dialogue and establishing shots, slash cuts between episodes, shortens the title cards, speeds through all 5 credit rolls at the end and replaces the theme song with a different recording that is also being used in the trailer for the TMNT Minecraft DLC.
On Nicktoons Network, Nick.com and PlutoTV the episodes air uncut and without modifications.

Shows come and go on Nicktoons all the time. The 2012 series, the Fairly OddParents and the 2021 Rugrats series does the same thing. Jimmy Neutron also comes back once in a blue moon, only to leave the channel again shortly after. So the 1987 series will likely leave and come back several times.

Nickelodeon is using the original recording of the theme song for everything except that crappy "HD" upload of season 1 as one spliced together video. All the Nicktoons Network airings, the Nick.com uploads and the airings on PlutoTV's Totally Turtles channel are uncut.
I don't think it's a content issue keeping those episodes from airing but more likely they don't have all the tapes yet or some tapes are too damaged to use. Hopefully they will sort things out soon but this was a very quick turnaround from when they announced that they acquired the old cartoon. Totally Turtles has already shown every episode that is schedule to air on Nicktoons Network. If the next cycle of episodes is all repeats then that will be a pretty good clue that they don't have all the tapes yet.

Well you have to say, this is exactly how kids channels aired cartoons in the 90's and 2000's.
Instead of airing eps in proper order, they would just randomly skip around and air eps no matter what order they wanted. The OT doesn't have THAT much continuity so it's not that huge a deal, but it's still odd when they have 193 eps to run through.

Today they are showing “The Turtles and the Hare” and “Once Upon a Time Machine” which are considered the start of season 5, episodes 105 and 106 but they were surely produced before the CBS episodes from season 4.
A rather peculiar selection overall because it ends up being 1, 2, 66, 69, 71, 72, 105, and 106. 2 episodes from season 1, 4 from season 4 and 2 from season 5.

I remember on the official ninja turtles website it said there is no episode 76 due to multiple changes that were made in episode number. “Raphael Meets His Match” features a Trump parody, “McDonald Crump”, and the whole episode takes place on a billionaire yacht that says “Crump” on the side.
“Slash, The Evil Turtle From Dimension X”, featured 2 Trump parodies:
Fenton Q Hackenbrush - Looks like and acts like Trump, portrayed as a “sleazy businessman” / “con man”
Donald J. Lofty - Name is more similar to Donald J. Trump, and kinda resembles the appearance of Fred Trump
I wonder if that’s why they skipped those episodes, they don’t want people thinking they support Trump, and get themselves “cancelled” ?
I guess we’ll have to wait and see if they eventually air those episodes. Even on “Donatello Trashes Slash” the final scene takes place on “Trumpet Tower”. Wonder why they associated Slash with Trump so much.
Only skipping 110 in season 5 so far but it’s bizarre that they skipped almost all of season 4.
Season 4 is when they had all the Trump parody episodes, I was wondering how they would handle that with the election coming up.

Season 4 is when they had all the Trump parody episodes, I was wondering how they would handle that with the election coming up.
Donald J. Lofty was also in The Big Zipp Attack and Rebel Without A Fin. Still that is a rather small portion of the season so I was surprised they skipped so many others. I can understand why they wouldn’t want to air the Trump ones.

Man, watching "Turtle Tracks" within the season 5 rotation really shows the drastic change of tone with the show over time.
To be honest, though, Season 1 feels different from every other season. First of all, it had a different animation studio. The villains were an actual threat, since after Season 1, they gradually become more inefficient, before becoming more of a threat again around Season 7. The Turtles actually used their weapons on a consistent basis, whether to destroy the Foot Soldier robots and the Mousers, to disarm Bebop and Rocksteady, or reduce the Krang android body back to its original size. After Season 1, it's surprising how little we see of the robots. Also, all four of the Turtles were humorous in their own right, as later on it would be established that Michelangelo and Raphael are the more humorous ones, and Leonardo and Donatello are the more serious ones.
This is why many fans, to this day, consider Season 1 the best one, with Season 2, 3 and 7 being the only other contenders.

I agree. I have a soft spot for season 2, as that is when I discovered the show in 1988. It actually has some sense of continuity, and I'd call it the second best season for my tastes. You can pretty much randomize season 3 to 7's episodes within their seasons and it wouldn't matter much continuity-wise.

Now that you mention it, Don and Leo had several funny lines in season 1 and Leo especially loses that in subsequent seasons.

I’ve decided to compile an airing chart for Totally Turtles and Nicktoons if anyone is interested in that.

It's not like the OT had that MUCH continuity anyway, most of the episodes were designed to watch in any order besides a few. This is how we all saw them on TV as kids anyway, I had no idea what the proper order of the show was after the first season since they always aired random episodes. I tossed in a random disc recently and realized that I had never seen any of the episodes on it before. It must have been that era where TMNT was on Saturday mornings and I sort of briefly "outgrew" it :lol::lol:
But the episode I just watched was the one where Krang's android body is regulated by a video game chip and Michelangelo controls it with a video game controller at the end.:P There was also a completely nonsense and out-of-place B-Plot in the episode where Shredder loses his memory... hahahah wtf?

Lately I have been trying to track down local TV schedules from 1987-1997 to see when and where TMNT and other cartoons were broadcast in syndication.
I’m pretty sure my local FOX station KQPQ ran TMNT next to Rescue Rangers and DuckTales in 1989 before that time frame became the Disney Afternoon in 1990. I’m not sure where TMNT ended up after that but it might have been weekday mornings or afternoons on another channel. Sometime after 1991 it was definitely on a different channel though it might have been CBS on a weekend when cartoons got moved to the late afternoon because of sports.

They have all the episodes but have skipped around 30 on Totally Turtles. I figure that’s because they had some tape problems but it’s just a theory.
Anyway today’s episodes have some previously skipped and some reruns.
70 - Shredder's Mom
75 - Name That Toon
77 - Super Hero for a Day
78 - Back to the Egg
104 - Unidentified Flying Leonardo
143 - Tower of Power
144 - Rust Never Sleeps
145 - A Real Snow Job

I'm guessing "Case of the Killer Pizzas" will be the last episode to air. They have to keep us watching by holding back one of the best episodes.

Bold choice given it’s already available to buy with the rest of season 2

Today it’s seasons 3, 4 and 5:
Invasion of the Turtle Snatchers
The Maltese Hampster
Green With Jealously
The Old Switcheroo
The Turtles and the Hare
Once Upon a Time Machine
Burner’s Blues
Michaelangelo Meets Mondo Gecko
I believe most of the season 3 episodes were skipped and this is their first time playing.

Yep!
"The Maltese Hamster" (22), "The Old Switcheroo" (24) and "Burne's Blues" (25) are season 3 episodes that were previously skipped.
So far, Totally Turtles has skipped 36 out of 183 episodes and it remains to be seen when they will show 184-193.
I wish I could say Nicktoons was getting better about skipping episodes but if the current listings are accurate then they're skipping a lot of season 3.

That’s weird , last night I checked todays schedule and it showed today as “my brother, the bad guy”, “mondo gecko”, “turtles and the hare”, “once upon a Time Machine”, “Turtles to the Second Power”, “Mobster From Dimension X”, “The Day the Earth Disappeared”, and “Divide and Conquer”. Must have switched it up overnight.

Season 6 is such an underrated season, there were so many gems that season it was like a predecessor to Season 7 in terms of more focus on action and fun stories.

Interesting. Might as well turn on Pluto TV while I do stuff and let Totally Turtles run. I might catch the few episodes I missed back in the day.
Currently airing 'Leonardo is Missing'. While it's almost 1PM and technically afternoon, it does feel good to watch the classic turtles again on a Saturday morning.

Rewatching these episodes I'm surprised how useful Michealangelo is to the crew, despite how the others poke fun at him at times. Not only does his grappling hook save the crew in several occasions, Mikey seems to come up with ideas when it comes to taking down the bad guys. Obviously not the scientific stuff Don would come up with, but like in that one episode where they fight the Wombat animatronics, everyone is outmatched but Mikey comes up with the idea to grab a dumpster and run it into several of them, blowing them up. It seems more often than not when the Turtles are stuck in some sort of fight or situation and everyone is like 'what now?', usually Michealangelo comes up with a silly but effective solution. Either that or when they're looking for something, Mikey either seems to the first Turtle to find the exact object or something related that will further the plot.

Today they finish season 6, then the Europe season. I believe this also the first time for Mr. Nice Guy:
Mr. Nice Guy
Sleuth on this Loose
Tower of Power
Rust Never Sleeps
A Real Snow Job
Venice on the Half Shell
Artless
Ring of Fire

Yep you notice things you don't notice before. I rewatched every episode of the original cartoon hundreds of times over the last 30 years so I have them ingrained into my brain.

Oooooh I can finally get to see these episodes!
edit- oh wow, so contemporary. even featuring modern day crazed leftists wanting to deface art.
edit edit- Gotta love how Krang has cameras all over the Earth
Overall these episodes don't seem all that bad. Maybe cause this is the first time I ever seen em. Was the problem just the Raph replacement VA?
