View Full Version : Your one favorite aspect of the OT

What might it be?
Don't go as simple as saying "the turtles are my favorite thing ever so seeing them is the best part". Elaborate! You like them in the OT for what, exactly?
For me, it'd have to be the snappy banter between Shredder & Krang. The human/alien assimilation & married couple attitude they possess has me splitting at the seams every time I watch show. The barrage of insults never gets old to me & I just love their overall chemistry. Their dialogue is easily the best part of the OT to me.
Speak up! What do you guys like best?

deffinatly when raph breaks the fourth wall. sometimes its pretty funny lol
and when the technodrome goes/gets trappped somewhere else every once in a while.

This will sound super corny, but If I had to pick one thing, would be the feeling you get while watching that you're among friends. Even the bad guys feel like your friends. Weird.

I gotta say Raph breaking the fourth wall was always fun for me. But now that I am older, Krang and Shredder do crack me up. They are like an old married couple.

I wish I could do more than parrot what's already been said, but you guys already said the best parts! I love the way Raph breaks the fourth wall, and I also love Shredder's bickering and failings. Heck, even though they get annoying sometimes too, I even like a lot of Rocksteady and Bebop's stupidity.
If I had to pick something other than what's been said already, I'd have to say the sheer absurdity of it all. I don't mean the stupid parts, I mean the whole idea in general (though that's more for TMNT period than just the OT). Four humanoid turtles fighting evil with weapons? It's definitely what prepared me to like a lot of the things I'd come to like later in life.

I have to go with the absurdity of it all as well. And the icing on the cake were the moments where the ridiculousness of what was going on was pointed out (I'm looking at you Raphael)

For me, I'll have to say that my favorite aspect of the OT was some of the facial expressions and timing. If you sit and really watch, you'll catch some really well place expressions in certain episodes (particularly eps like "Cowabunga Shredhead") that sometimes makes you laugh more than the actual dialogue.

Its the general light-hearted humor. The show has a, "this is so stupid its actually funny," mentality to it.
The plots were all bizarre 80's sci-fi plots, yet somehow they were all fun to watch.
The other best thing is the characters all play off each other:
1. The 4 Turtles
2. Shredder/Krang/Bebop/Rocksteady
3. April and Vernon/Irma/Burne
And then when they all interact together, its usually funny.
I loved Krang and Shredder just so corny Also Vernon was hilarious he just makes me laugh every time especially the episode The Technodrome story where he tried to beat April at being the better reporter and getting her story lol got himself in all sorts of trouble.

It is HILARIOUS! I watch the old episodes- they are just plain hysterical! I laugh so much while watching them.
Granted, some seasons are better than others. But overall, the OT was a very good universe with a lot of laughs.

I saw only a few episodes, but I really like the interaction between Shredder, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady. They are just too funny! In my opinion, they almost steal the show... And it seem that I'm not the only one to think like that since they seem to be as popular (if it's not more) than the Turtles!

I think for me it's the camaraderie between the turtles. I think everyone wishes they had a group of friends they could exchange witty banter with 24/7, lol.
And of course Shredder, one of the most enjoyable and amusing villians of all time, lol.

I'm echoing what a few people have said, but easily Krang and Shredder's interactions! The whole Technodrome crew seemed to have a sitcom-ish feel to it, like a dysfunctional family. Bebop and Rocksteady were like the misbehaving kids, and Krang and Shredder (mostly Shredder)the long-suffering parents.
Of course the turtles were also very likeable and I even enjoyed the channel six lot. It just all clicked for me to make a perfect cartoon :)

The science fiction theme. Much is taken from 1950's and 60's science fiction films, when science fiction was not as "serious" as later.
I love how Raph can dish it out. Even in the OT he wasn't afraid to walk the talk.

I'm not sure how to accurately describe this, since there aren't many times I did not enjoy the OT.
I guess I would probably have to say I loved how I always felt when watching the OT. The Turtles felt like friends and I got to watch their adventures. It was my way to escape the suck of real life, especially as I got up around 4th-7th grades.
The characters were always interesting, the stories were always fun, and when the show went off I always wished it wouldn't end.

The OT was a big change from the "Cops & Robbers" and "Swords & Sorcery" shows that I had watched for the first several years of my life. Especially in the first few seasons, everything about that show felt more personal than the typical "uphold justice" shows. Also, everything had a bit of an imperfect, improvised "grunge" to it early-on that I got into in that "boys like playing in the mud" sort of way.
Of course, as funny as it was, I took the show a bit more seriously as a kid. Nowadays, I really like the humor in the show, both intentional and unintentional. It feels like I'm watching a parody of a cheesy martial arts film when I watch the OT.
It's probably part of the reason why I like the TMNT manga (http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2009/05/tmnt-manga.html) so much nowadays.

Differs a lot between episodes. Too many episodes was about Krang and Shredder looking for Technodrome, and too many episodes, except for the Vacation in Europe, were set in New York City (yes, the TMNT live there, but look how fun Archie was with the TMNT travelling around the Earth).

I suppose what I loved so much about it was the inherent fun and lightheartedness of the setting. While I have nothing at all against serious (relatively) Turtles, the world in which the OT is set is one of great adventure and endless fun. It was fantastic for a kid, and even as an adult I can enjoy it.

It was part of my childhood and brings me alot of memories.
My one favorite aspect? Probably the humor. Even thoug it could be embarrasign at moments it also had hilarious episodes such as Cowabunag Shredhead and Plan 6 From Outer Space, not to mention Raphael and Krang had the best quotes in the series.

I always took it as much humor, but I agree they live more like a family, and not the Justice League or some other team of heroes who only try to stop bad guys.

I like the fact that the show takes one of the most ridiculous booze-fueled concepts ever and makes it seem like the most normal thing in the world. In other words, we laughed at the jokes the turtles made, but not at the fact that they were ninja turtles; the show treated kids respectfully by drawing them into the creators' imaginations and all the fun therein.

Very well said! The turtles were basically just ordinary guys making sardonic comments about the insane world around them. And yet they're seen as the "weird" ones by society.

Did anyone else realize they learned what a dimensional portal or an alternate universe was after watching the original cartoon?
The whole thing about them opening portals and transporting to Earth....that was amazing as a kid. I had no idea what the hell a portal was or what, "another dimension" was.
That sci-fi stuff was awesome.

Dude, I was just coming here to say that! Rob Paulsen as Raphel was just too awesome for words. Plus I just love the fact that that man voices some of my favorite characters. Once I learned he was the voice of OT Raph, it was just icing on the cake.

I'm gonna give the two-dimensional but honest answer: April O'Neil. ;p What a FOX!
I'm just not big on the old cartoon series. Was as a kid, sure, but I can't stand it now, with the exception of the first season. Those first five episodes are written quite well. Witty, funny, and it had some decent drawings and animation. Right at season two, however, it didn't just go downhill, it skydived without a parachute...

I guess it just depends on what you were looking for. If you were looking for a more straight forward action cartoon, you'd probably like the first season more than later seasons. If you were looking for a more satirical look at action cartoons, you'd like the second and later seasons as well.
I personally don't think the series went downhill at all, except maybe during the "Red Sky" episodes where it really became just your standard action cartoon. There are hundreds of cookie cutter action cartoons and now there wasn't anything unique or special about the turtles anymore.

For me, it's not really about what I'm looking for. I can accept just about anything regardless of expectations. Like I said, I loved the show as a kid and probably saw most of its episodes. Just revisiting it now, I don't find anything interesting about the second season, and haven't bothered to watch beyond it. There's nothing comical or amusing about it, in my opinion, whereas the humor and goofiness of the first season is comical and amusing. Take the action away and it's still entertaining. The second season just doesn't have any good writing or really anything interesting about it at all, in my opinion.

Well I will agree that the first season probably did have the best humor, and after that the series went more "mainstream" and child friendly, no question about that. It's just that I still find the 2nd and later seasons amusing as well; just in a different way. But as you say we all have our own opinions. :)

The non-Paulsen-Raph episodes are hard to watch. I was watching the season 7 box set with the "world tour" episodes, and all the eps had a non-Paulsen-Raph. Torture. Absolute torture to listen to some guy give a half-assed impersonation of Rob and be not even half as funny.

I personally felt that after seasons 1 and 2 the series fell into a random mess of good to crap episodes. Some gems and some horrid offerings. Then season 7 came along and in my opinion the series stayed good until it ended. 2 was the last story arc until season 8. 7 didn't really have one, unless you count the European Vacation as part of season 7 but I don't. I count it as part of 4 where it belongs because it's a pile of ass.
On topic my favorite aspect of the series was the character dynamic. All the characters had interesting dynamics. The Channel Six crew included. It was a good source for humor. I also liked how the series set up situations where the turtles had to work with villains to save the day.
